Houston - Murder by the Book & Brazos Bookstore. Both are indies w/regular guest authors.
San Francisco - City Lights. Memories from my youth but it's still going strong.
Menlo Park, CA - Kepler's has also been there forever
Corte Madera (Marin County)CA - Book Passages. Another indie w/wonderful guest authors.
I must agree that Powell's is fantastic, even though I only know them from online. Someday I'll get there in person.

Favorite bookstore? Portland Powell's. That's where I want to go when I die. Seriously.
I'll accept Myopic Books, in Chicago, as the waiting room for the afterlife. But only if there are good friends there with me, and a decent place to sip drinks and compare acquisitions.

Kathy.....do you mean falling out of cars with my booze in one hand and my skirt around my ass......not too many.............LO

hey there Crazies....So good to see everyone having such a great time....
Shorfi,
Your grandchildren are so cute! Do you get to see them often. My grandmother was my best buddy when I was small. Sorry about the back issues.. My cousin had back surgery last year and it made a huge difference. She was always very active skiing etc and hated having that problem... She was worried about doing surgery but It totally fixed stuff for her. Good luck to you, I'm sure you'll do fine.
Jack,
I was going to say meatballs but albondigas same deal! I remember learning that word in Spanish class por almuerzo. Everything looks great!
Lucy,
A party is a party no matter how many hours one must drive!! Hope you have a great time a pond get some rest before the return.
Octo,
Have a great weekend on the coast. Glad your husband showed you that hair is not what means the most to him. He's a good guy.
Chevy,
I'm Italian too on both sides, and yes we eat chicken feet. At least I did as a small child, also pigs feet. Never had the egg thing. My family is from Florence, Siena, and Lucca on my dads side and The Piedmont region on my moms. We're all northern Italians , blondes and redheads. I'm actually a Medici descendant and there are a couple of popes in the family like 4/500 years ago. We weren't loud...that was Scicilians!!! In fact my great aunt was disowned for marrying a Scicilian waaaay back in the day and those parts of my family didn't talk to each other for something like 60 years!! Never had the bread thing, but my dads mom made her own ravioli..and there were always these Torreone nougat in the house.
Rainn,
Good luck this weekend, you preach it sister!!!!! Call Crazy Town if you need bail money.
Ducky,
I found this picture of you and Chevy but I'm a little fuzzy on who your friend is...
Gaia,
No wooden spoons... Spanking but no implements. My mother really wasn't a cook, I don't even know if she had a wooden spoon...
Anyway here's today's food porn...zucchini "pasta" with a spiced Indian tomato sauce

Sula, lol, as a Sicilian, yes we are loud. Stereotypes usually have truth in them. And I have been known to chase people who make me mad with whatever is available, dish towel, etc.
I will tell you though, that Sicilians will always have your back. I have threatened to bitch slap a couple of people who messed with my sisters on here. Don't know if I would, but you never know.
My great aunt Josie's favorite weapon was the back of a hair brush. We lived in fear of that thing. But still loved her to pieces

Hi all!
Unwinding after first night of the retreat....fun but exhausting. Beautiful here. Off to bed. But first:
no fair showing me pics like that of albondigas Katy! Send them now! is there tomato in it?
Favorite bookstores: the cooks in the group should check out Green Apple Books on Clement in SF. Very nice cookbook and food porn selection.
Alas, I've only been to Powell's in Portland once...
Falling asleep. Good night all

Italy,
I managed to broker a family truce about 10 yrs ago.. I found the Scicilian branch of the family and got them all together... They hadn't spoken since around 1940! Turns out I'd grown up 6 blocks away from those family members and this cousin ( my age) and I had never met!! She brought along a letter her mom had written to my mom and my mom claimed she'd never gotten such a letter.. My cousin whipped out the envelope which had scrawled across it... "Return to sender!" In my moms writing ... Busted!! She was so embarrassed... But we did get the family together again!
I have been known to throw shit ( I have a very bad temper) and up til 9/11 ( when I cut that shit out) used to always carry a pocket knife in my purse.
Octo,
I used to buy my books at The Book Nook at the Brentwood Country Mart in LA, and Powells of course on line ... This was pre Amazon ... In Santa Monica we had Midnight Special Books ...both the stores in Brentwood, and Santa Monica are gone now but here in Sonoma we have Readers Books which is a great indie book store.

I have a Nook Book... from Barnes & Noble... I used to do a LOT of reading, but then Crochet took over... And I bought a million books from the Farmers Market, for only $1 each... Most were from stores who got rid of or went out of business... But I LOVED reading Jackie Collins, and Detective/ Jury books... I read almost all of Danielle Steele's books.... Judith Krantz was a bit of a tart, but you can get through it... also my favorite book was Memoirs of a Geisha........ And a Woman of Substance, by Barbara Taylor Bradford..
Did any of you nice little ladies read 50 Shades of Gray? No? Am I the only one willing to fess-up on here? Or go see the movie Magic Mike 1 or 2???? Hot damn! Or what IS all this? Did you ask just only about Book Stores? And here I spilled the beans about EVERYthing?
Okay, never mind.... you tricked me! Okay, now you little Italian women..... Sicilian's yes.... That's what the whole kit-N-kaboodle were... On both sides of him.... I could hear those women saying things in Italian, whenever I left the room... I was only 18... but their SON/Nephew/Cousin was their oldest "boy".... and they had issues with me, the little Irish girl having anything to DO with him! They warmed up a little after our first baby... she was a "girl" of all things! And Italians have this thing about SONS!
Then our second was also a "girl".... Hah! I think it damned nearly killed them all.... We were TOLD that we weren't woman or man enough to have a Son.... It was about the third time I heard that, that I threw the moppine down on the table, and screamed we don't have to take this anymore, and left the premises.... I was just sobbing... So we took our two little girls and went home...... Things weren't the same after that... and no... they didn't apologize.... Isn't it funny, that in spite of how you were raised or grew up, just makes you SWEAR you will never be like "them?" And you build your own little family the way you think it should be.... ?
You GO Suladog! You sound like so much fun... And Italychick.... Glad you two made it without any "scars".... Ha!
And Sula.... did your family make "sinkers"? That pasta they shaped with their fingers, and threw in boiling water? Kind of like gnocchi! Only not with potato water.... Man, you could eat 2 of them, and remained seated for the entire night.

Good morning CRazies........please do not ask me about things Italian people do............
For starters my MIL's first question when she heard someone had a gf/bf/ in the family she would say "Is he/she Italian..........and nothing would piss me off more then that......
How about this one......when I walked into a room of my husband's relatives would all start to talk.......big give away............they would look right at me..........dead give away.......
I met my husband when I was in 7th grade and he was in 9th....it was love at first sight.....his mother forbid him to go anywhere near me.....but the best thing.........she told him.............VINCENZO, ITS PUPPY LOVE...that puppy love lasted for 35 years, and 6 children until he died...........but then again when he was dying she told me he wasn't dying and that my problem was I had no faith, and needed to pray more....0 -
family fights or disagreements are often dang odd~~~in my family my aunt Phyllis hated my cousin Betty. My grandmother raised Betty after her mother died, Her dad did not know what to do with her and had 4 sons to handle so Betty went off to my grandmothers (her aunt really). Never understood why but Aunt P was always worried that Betty was getting more stuff or time with Grammy. It was that way till they all passed. Me? I loved my Aunt P and also loved cousin Betty!

Woo Hoo to 100 + pages. Have been enjoying the chevy- ducky repartee.
Standing in the corner on the book store but currently reading T.S Elliot on my Kindle. I have to have an adjustable font.
Had a Dutch grandmother who preferred things closest at hand thus a shoe or a broom or flyswatter but wooden spoon was also used. Enjoying the food porn. Always wanted to be part of a big loud family, Got my wish fulfilled here. Thank You Crazies.
Happy to report my A1c went from 5.5 down to 5.0 !! Triglycerides manageable at 211 and total cholesterol 217. Dang if my TSH wasn't 0.05 so my thyroid meds will be reduced more than likely. Colonoscopy scheduled for November...I am on the 5 year followup plan due to family history.

Rose me too......only I am 3 year plan.............my mother died of colon cancer........my entire family was all checked well before 50...my youngest daughter at 40.....I had a great GI Dr. that thought prevention beat trying to cure it..............all were good, although one of my daughters did have a polyp that he referrred to as the type that eventually could become cancer............the next one she had 3 years later another polyp but this one was the non cancer type.....so we are careful with our "Butts"........LOL
Yea families are great aren't they.....they come in all shapes, and sizes........kind, and unkind, loud and quiet.................but my grandmother was a thrower.....many a shoe I took to the back of the head...................my mother was too.......after you said something that she didn't like I knew to "duck"......not that is not how I go the name........it was a Nickname from my dear departed father..........no he didn't die......he left my mother right after I was born......LOL0 -
My Sicilian grandfather loved the fly swatter, haha
0 -
~~my mom when angered used a switch that she pulled off of the forsythia bush at the back door
dang thing was nasty on the back of bare legs
0 -
My Brother and I just always got spanked! Across their laps, and when we cried, our dog Sport would try and bite them...Ha! Then he would get smacked. THEN, after Mom would spank us, she would tell Dad when he came home from work, and he would spank us again!
Something wrong with those two.....

we got the metal pancake turner. Italians have no monopoly on this. We are German/Irish/Scottis
0 -
Jackie................Scottish, Irish, German too............my great grandmother was born in Edinborough, Scotland.........the Irish comes from my fathers side....(sperm donor), and the German was my biological grandfather whose last name was Schmidt.........you don't get more German then that..........
I never remember getting hit with anything but their hand, oh and shoes when my grandmother would decide to throw them.............which was often............and I can't imagine why...............I was an angel..........Shut up Chevy.............0 -
rofl, duckyb1 I am sure you weren't a complete angel. I was forbidden from ever saying the two words "I am." Dad would say clean your room, and I would say all snotty I am. He hated it

Hah! Oh wait.... that just came out.... We WERE angels! I mean when we were little, we didn't know any better! We HAD to behave in those days... "Those" days meaning before the turn of the cen..... no wait.... before color TV.... before cordless phones... before Cd's and refrigerators!
Ask Ducky.... she was "there!"....

Good Evening Crazies
With all the spanking going on here I wonder if our CT thread is walking a fine line! If so I vote Ducky and Chevy to be the CT madam's - with all respect!
Turn of seasons always has me 'turning inward' and I relish it, yet I have been substantially unmotivated these last few days. I facetime on the regular with my dad and tonight he checked in before we 'talked' and said " what are you doing now?" I replied " sitting on the couch staring at the produce on the counter and trying to motivate to make some food'. This is not 'normal behavior for me.
Anyway, I got off the couch and called him and started to talk it out. Ended up wrapping around it's all been a less than 5 month whirlwind and making some food while we talked.
Caramelized Squash with maitake mushrooms, buttermilk & sage.... sounds weird but it's pretty divine
I also ordered ( yes I'm standing in the corner Rain) Stranger in a Strange Land, as I somehow feel called to revisit this classic book. And because I guess I feel like a stranger in a strange land.
Other than that re Bookstores- this is by no means complete, just the only ones at my brain tip right now
City Lights in San Fran
Word in Greenpoint
McNally Jackson in Soho
Octo you coming home soon? hope the retreat has been nourishing.
Rain maybe we add the bookstore to our favorites- let's meet there.
Lucy hope you enjoyed the party and you get some heat on your back to counter any stiffeness
PTS glad to hear this new system is giving you relief.
Pennsygal- how are you?
Katy your brother arrives tomorrow! I hope you two have a sweet and laughter filled visit.
OK going to take out my eyes and brush my fangs ( it's a saying in our house- appropriate for the season !)
Sula do you have a Halloween/day of the dead menu brewing in your cauldron?
Thinking of you Slow, Tom, shorfi, Poppy, mommy ( hugs), Tang, Eggroll... and everyone!
Hugs

Christine- that carmelized squash thing does look divine. Can you send some through the tube?
I think I need some help with a leg of lamb. I am having 5 for dinner Thursday. I think everyone likes Indian so I'm leaning in that direction.
I'm going to peruse Lord Krishna cups do company. I have all the necessary spices. Could I marinate overnight then roast?

That is a gorgeous looking dish. The combo of caramelized squash and sage are perfect and I love mushrooms, I al out bought some maitake today.

sula that recipe will work for me. Amazingly, I have every last item I need in my pantry! Even the cardamom seeds! Woot! Thank you! My bff and husband and another good friend who all love a curry, will all be here, so this kind of a celebratory dish is perfect!
I might try some poori. Any tricks? I have some frozen naan if it fails.
I love your blog. I am looking hard at the green bean/ chickpea pancake recipe as a side dish. I have done some lovely fresh green beans. I didn't see a finished pic what it was supposed to look like? Do you have one? Any other input on that dish? I think it would go nicely. Maybe over the top? I could just do simple beans since the dish itself us so fancy. I'm so excited!

Jack....here's a poori recipe
http://www.thecolorsofindiancooking.com/2011/07/puffy-pooris-or-how-to-put-on-show-in.html
I don't have a finished picture of the green bean chickpea pancake dish as that was done a while ago when I wasn't shooting a bunch of pictures...before my husband stepped in to do my photography. I make a few suggestions at the end if the lamb korma as to side dishes....on green bean dish I do love and serve a lot is this one...I like it because it's served at room temp and can be made ahead.
http://www.thecolorsofindiancooking.com/2011/07/major-fail-and-green-beans-save-day.html
I have a lot of recipes on the blog for almost anything just type the vegetable you're looking for in the search box.
Have fun with your brother.
Gaia,
For some reason I always think of Patsy and Edina of Ab Fab when picturing Chevy and Ducky having adventures

I LOVED Absolutely Fabulous! Those gals were so much fun.... Also Thelma and Louise.... Ha! And lately those two "Margaret and Helen"...
Except they are really into talking and haggling political stuff, and man, I just ain't INTO that! All that arguing and calling each other's party's names, and who likes to PO everybody else like that?
Speaking of whatEVER.... You guys know I live in Denver, right? Every day, there is stuff in the News about the pot-growers, and cops, and all this hub-bub going on about legal use of MJ... Talk about CRAZY-TOWN? But I never see anybody "high"... just people waiting to get IN to these places.... Now I believe there is a place and a reason, for anyone using weed... I mean just ask Willy... And for instance the little children, who have medical issues that cannabis (or whatever) will help....
But as far as smoking weed, or DRINKING.... I would much rather be around someone high, than drunk.... except I've never been around anybody high... I don't think.... And so many accidents involving drunk-drivers! I would just shoot them all.... They take away their licenses, but that don't stop them from driving, much less DRINKING! They get into a car and drive... and don't care!
Nnnnnnnnnny way.... guess I'll get off my soap-box for now... Gotta clean up some of these leaves today.... hopefully not falling off a ladder with the leaf blower would be nice.....
And I like to look at food pictures! I don't do many fancy dinners any more... Actually, never! Because as we get older.... and I mean US Ducky, we just don't eat that much, and stick to what we like best, that has the least amount of work!

Gala, love love the look of the roasted squash! making me hungry or rather think I need a veggie market run later today~
Sula, I am passing your blog onto my cleaning helper as she loves Indian food and was saying last time she came to chase my dust bunnies that she was not finding a good source for ideas. She had a bad experience with an allergic reaction to something in an Indian restaurant and now wants to make her own Indian food. Today is the day she will chase the dust bunnies for me, she comes when called or about once a month.
Smoking weed, believe it or not, never have even tried it. Guess I just never hung out with folks who were into drugs. Do like my wine though.
Damp and unkie today,
