chocolate, wine, scotch, cheese and crackers, plus competing desserts: sounds like my kind of Thanksgiving! :-)
I hear you on the green stuff, although I do a really nice brussel sprouts with shallots that will be on the table. Was going to make a big salad because we are (still) getting TONS of lettuce in our weekly CSA (community supported agriculture) straight-from-the-farm box, but my sister wisely convinced me that we could do the salad Friday night, along with turkey soup.
On the subject of competitiveness: every year my girlfriend who will be attending and I have a turkey soup cook off competition on Friday: add bread and salad and leftovers, and one can feed the overnight/weekend guests...so while I won't do much cooking, I will make my turkey soup. Sadly, however, my GF has won the blind taste testing two years in a row (we take it seriously), even though I am no slouch when it comes to turkey soup. I might put matzoh balls in mine this year, she can't beat that! :-)
Have I mentioned that Thanksgiving is one of two favorite holidays of mine (along with Passover)? One of my favorite meals of the year also, Molly.

Echo done, now to wait for results

In your pockets, Di and M0mmy.
LOL on green stuff being a Thanksgiving afterthought. We're going to a restaurant (friends are hosting again) this year; it's known mostly for comfort food which tends towards the dense & heavy side. (Their gumbo, for instance, is almost a jambalaya and strangely spiced). Don't recall there having been green veggies on the plate last time. But it's about carrying on tradition and gathering with friends. (Still miss those leftovers, though). Other friends, when they host T-day or Christmas (for which they roast a goose), make the husband's family heirloom recipe "Green Slime" salad: lime Jell-O whipped with cream & mayo and studded with mini-marshmallows, shredded coconut, maraschino cherries and walnuts. Sounds disgusting but it's delicious. And before she became disabled, my late friend (whose widower is hosting the restaurant dinner) had a black belt in cooking. Thanksgiving at their home included both turkey & prime rib, homemade crusty breads & rolls, and the iconic green bean casserole...from scratch! Fresh green beans, hand-Frenched; fresh mushrooms, pre-sauteed; bechamel sauce instead of Campbell's soup; and the crispy fried onion topping was very thinly sliced sweet onions, floured and deep fried before being crumbled.

evening, sounds so fun hearing the dif turkey day. Mine this year is across the street at neighbors. They have fairly simple cooking style, nothing too fancy but you can not beat the drive! I have memories of much more elaborate turkey meals made by my sister and by other family members but do not miss thej drivjes.
Well contractor is gone, all done except for toilet which is on back order so contractor will return to install that next week. I do like the way it all came out, very calming

0(drooling over the green bean casserole recipe) A low-key Thanksgiving for us--the meal's with a co-worker/friend of my husband's so no idea what's involved.

Oh yum. My mouth is watering with all these possibilities.
Iris, you do....have...a....working....toilet now? Yes?
Mommyof2, hope you get your echo results soon.
Octo, a CSA in California sounds amazing. Ours ended a few weeks ago. We've just gotten the first shipment for the winter share, which is only once a month. Consequently there is a butternut squash the size of a newborn baby in the kitchen, so I've thrown up my hands and done what I should have done ages ago and ordered a new food processor. Because soup is the only real choice for something that size.
Green bean casserole also sounds amazing. My mother, in the past, would do it but with campbells soup. Everyone made noises about how unhealthy it was, and everyone gobbled it up.
I think it's going to have to be cranberry bread, or possibly muffins. I took another look at the cardamon-coffee cake, and it takes six eggs.
I'm angling for the turkey carcass this year. I've been making soup two or three times a week, so the idea of turkey stock is really enticing.
Before I drool all over my laptop, I should start supper.....

Me too.

In your pocket Mommy!
Rain, roasted butternut squash soup is a must at Thanksgiving in my house. Making some tomorrow. No food processor needed if you have a hand blender....cut the squash in quarters, sprinkle with olive oil, and bake the squash until insides are tender (about 60 minutes at 350). While it is cooling saute a yellow onion (chopped) in a pan with butter, then saute an apple, chopped...add sage, a pinch of allspice, and four cups veggie or chicken stock..
then remove the roasted squash meat from the hard exterior (an ice cream scoop works for this...). Add squash insides to soup, simmer 20 minutes, then blend with hand blender. Squeeze of lemon, salt and pepper. All done! Yum! I serve it before before dinner as a light lunch when I host.
CSA box tomorrow will have spinach, eggplant, beets, carrots, lettuce, salad greens, cauliflower, popcorn, sweet potatoes, carrots, kale and kohlrabi.....yes, if you like veggies, California is the place to live!

Creamed onions for me as the must-have go-to Thanksgiving side dish (pearl onions, cream sauce and lots of it, and swiss cheese melted over all.) As for the rest, it's the leftovers I love. Pie for breakfast the next day. Hot turkey sandwiches with gobs of gravy for lunch. Turkey rice soup for dinner, because by then I'm feeling dyspeptic.

rainny, sorry if i miss led you but this place has 3 toilets in it it so that i,s not a problem, only the leak was the issue, only missing the one in guest bath, so glad it is all cleaned up now. Apparently went toilet is 30 years old, well age hits
Wierd, one person and 3 toilets!
Construction mess is cleaned up, yeah

Iris: three toilets for one person is no stranger than three bedrooms for one couple (my husband/me) That's the house you have. Certainly it's been nice for us having two bathrooms, and an ex-kitchen upstairs. Makes getting ready in the morning that much easier!

queen, yeah i was happy when i bought the place as it had 2 bedrooms and 2 stories. Course now would rather have one level, oh well.
So nurse practitioner just called, liver level have been rising, guess not good so mo wants to move up an upcoming pet scan. Np is going to figure out the scedule as holiday sort of puts a wrinkle in all

Hugs to you iris! Enjoy your holiday and try not to think about the PET scan. We will all have a pocket party for you! M0mmy, when do you get results? My US is still pending in authorization hell. Ah well just going to eat myself silly this weekend. I am going to buy some gluten free ginger snaps and make a GF pumpkin marshmallow pie for my friends. I will let you know how it turns out! Plus I promised DH a tart cherry crumble. Oh man I am hungry!

Iris, three toilets! I'm coming over, be there in an hour! (Just kidding.)
Octo, your squash soup is very similar to mine--I always roast it first! I've never done it with an apple, though. I've never owned a hand blender, either. I've always pureed soups in a food processor, which I also use for making pesto, latkes, cole slaw, and if I'm in a hurry, pie crust. My mom bought my first one as a gift during the Reagan administration, so I really can't complain that it has finally expired. Our CSA share included a huge bag of very large carrots, so I'm thinking carrot-ginger soup might happen soon, too.
Molly, cherry crumble sounds divine.
It's complicated, but in your, Iris's, and Mommyof2's pockets....
Meanwhile, minestrone is on the stove, cookie dough is cooling off in the freezer, corn bread is next. My DS is on a bus, somewhere between western Massachusetts and NYC. My DH is teaching but is coming home early to greet the boy. Happy almost-Thanksgiving, everyone!

Same to you, rainny. Enjoy!

I promised a rhubarb pie to my man, we may be having his sister over, don't know yet if she's coming, having a small turkey regardless (small oven). Plus smashed potatoes with lots of butter, sour cream, a pinch of dried onions. May try that green bean casserole up above! And small bakery rolls I found. Homemade cranberry sauce with much less sugar than it calls for as we like it very tart! House isn't very clean though, (hugs, Molly!), because the damn holiday always sneaks up on me and plus I am lazy and distracted, as usual. (Just found out she is coming, playing it all by ear and no stress, no expectations. Told him I will have it done early, any orphan friends or neighbors welcome.) Food will be here just in case, and every one knows my house has been a big mess since dx, anyway. (before that, it was always only dusty, now I have tons and tons of unfinished projects, books, i don't know what, some of mom's things, photo's, etc, scattered every where, PLUS dust.

My Cuisinart is older than Gordy (who is 33)--like rainnyc's, it was a gift from my mom. It's gone through a couple of work bowls. But it cleans up well and still works, so I have no need to replace it. I do have a stick blender, which I've never used; but I get a lot of mileage from my Vitamix.

The bowl of my old Cuisinart worked well for years with occasional duct tape patches of the cracks. But the motor itself finally gave out, alas.
Tomboy, your house is fine. Truly. You'll make everyone feel welcome, and feed them, and that's what matters.
xo

I agree with Rain, Tomboy! (though easy for me to say, I refused to host because I knew my house would be a mess after the knee replacement surgery...)
I like cranberry sauce to be tart as well. and would love some creamed onions and smashed potatoes and a cherry crumble.
Too many tests coming up, but in all the pockets. Where I will be eating a drumstick!
Hugs and Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Yep. Had one minor hiccup with starting the turkey. My baster broke so I had to send hubby to the store to get a new one.

Basters never break except on Thanksgiving & Christmas.
