    Piksie,

A good attitude is to take things a day at a time. Keep moving in whatever range you can and do so consistently. And listen to your body. I find it helpful to just build in movement throughout the day. Just getting up every hour and moving around can be a great start.

I know for myself sometimes I get a little down that my stamina comes and goes. But then I remember that my body is working really hard to fight off the cancer, so that allows me to quiet my voice of criticism and cuts me some slack.

I haven’t played pickle ball but am intrigued by it. In my teens I played tennis and enjoyed that. But creepy knees and weight took me off the tennis court. From what I know/understand of pickle ball it is less physically demanding than tennis. Maybe tag along with your friend and at least check it out from the sidelines.

    Keep on trucking!

    wow we turned page 100!

Piksie, maybe light physical therapy exercises can help you as a starter. But definitely walking is the best exercise. Yesterday I walked 50 minutes! Yay!!!! I record my steps and set up a goal, I get motivated each time that I reach the goal. Then I set another goal and challenge myself to reach that goal. Sometimes I just do some light pt exercises, as wavesofharmony said “listen to my body”.

I did take it easy today as a rest day but will pick up tomorrow. I am going to lubricate my treadmill after having adjusted the belt.

it was my post chemo weekend so I was dragging myself around due to fatigue and pain. My chemo frigging hurts. Anyway did my twice daily walks with Olive (except we skipped Friday evening because the smoke here was so bad. The Air quality index here goes from 1-10 and ours was 10+ so I no way did I want to go out there with my damaged lungs). But I was moving so slow and doing nothing in between. Today I'm going to start ramping up back up.

I walked the long distance on Saturday. Sunday was about fixing my treadmill mostly, learned to adjust the belt, oiled as best as I could underneath, will try it out tomorrow most likely. The plan for walking tomorrow is to have any outdoor walking done in the morning and some indoor stuff later due to packages from Amazon to be coming. Nothing exciting, computer stuff, flash drives and memory cards for my phones. I also bought shredder sharpening and lubricating sheets as well. My shredder has been put through its paces. Glad that Amazon has started shipping some things in paper envelopes instead of boxes as well.

Tomorrow will be two full weeks of mon-fri morning walks with DH at a local park. I take weekends off but DH has been going on his own. He has a stent in his leg already and is having issues again, so his dr. said to walk through the pain or he may face another surgery. We’re reducing fat and meat as well. Finally, I’ve been gently nudging him to develop healthier habits for years, even before my diagnosis.

Mae, glad to hear about your walking with DH and how much it is helping. Feels good when you can do it.

Was out with older brother last night and asked him to help with my treadmill which was stopping and starting. I did try to oil but did not get enough on as I did not loosen the belt enough first. He oiled and tested and my short walk this morning was smooth which was nice. Not sure what else I will do today, could be rainy. Might still do a shortened walk outside if it does not rain and I also plan to do some marching type walks in the house, allows me to use my arms more and go fast. I put my yoga mat over my step bench as I prefer to do it without shoes. I walk on the spot on top of the stepbench to remove noise for the downstairs neighbour. Eventually I will look into strength training and what I need for that that will fit at home.

I also have not used my cubii elliptical for a long time so I am now going to use it when I watch Y and R for the hour. Every little bit helps. They say two revolutions count as a step.

Hope everyone has a great day.

Planning a super long walk for myself possibly tomorrow, earlier morning. Plan would be to walk 15.8 km/10 miles roundtrip with a meal break at my favourite burger joint in the middle. My plan would be to bring a couple bottles of water to have along the way with a granola bar or two, go a steady pace and be prepared to take the bus home if needed. It is all the way to the other end of the city. I believe I could do this and may go tomorrow.

The longest walk I have done to this point was about 12 km but that route was very hilly and difficult. Not sure if there are many hills on this route. I find it easier to motivate myself with food when doing the longer walks. When walking at home or around the neighbourhood, half an hour is usually my limit. I can do an hour without much issue as well. I am hoping tomorrow or Thursday this week.

Today just doing some at home walking and chores. Want to reach my step goal of 10000 through short walks, treadmill, one outdoor and on the spot on my treadmill so I can go really fast.

Thank you Snowdrop and Waves of Harmony. Since I don't work myself, I have time to plan these things. If it is too hard, I have no problem taking a bus home but I like the challenge to myself. I would not do it without the break of a meal in the restaurant either. I forgot to mention that I will use neck fans if it is overly hot as well to stay cool. Haven't told my family as they would dissuade me but I want to walk while I can. I am also a large person so it is good to keep moving as well. As said, weather will be a factor but since the burger place opens at 1030 am, I want to leave by 9 am to avoid the afternoon sun. If the weather is not good tomorrow, Thursday is an alternate day as well. I will eat a part of a granola bar before starting, after an hour or so, eat the other part and have some water then that should see me comfortably to the restaurant. Looking forward to it. Today is just 10 or 15 minutes on the treadmill each hour. Not counting steps. Don't feel like doing the outdoor one today other than to take out some garbage.

well I went to a nice walking trial, and I took 2 breaks in between which helped me to continue, I must admit it is a cloudy day so good for me as sharp sunshine makes me so slow and tired. So I could walk 4 rounds, usually I can walk 2, tops. I am pleased with the outcome. also I received an unfair rejection today, but just because my mood was in good shape- because of this accomplishment- I don’t care about that, if I didn’t go for a walk and stayed home I wouldn’t be able to take that low email away of my head. Let’s see what I can do tomorrow.

I love all the walkers! DH and I haven’t been go very far since it is painful for him but we’ve been consistent and will increase our mileage weekly.

Well, just getting set to go for my longest roundtrip walk yet. Wanting to do 16k/10 miles roundtrip. There will be a burger meal in the middle. I am a little nervous as i have not done this long of a walk. I am bringing two water bottles, two granola bars if needed and neckfans as well. Wearing a sun hat too along with a UV shirt. Google says it should take 1h 40 mins each way, will probably take me closer to 2 hours. Added I believe I can fly to my music I listen to. I know R Kelly is a bad guy in real life but I find that song inspiring, especially the part that says "If I can see it, then I can do it, If I just believe it, there's nothing to it." I will post afterword how it went.

i did not make it. Made it to the restaurant and ate, was heading home, stopping to have drinks or sit if needed but about 1/2 way home, got really really lightheaded and almost passed out in front of a bank. Was hanging onto a pole asking for help and they brought me a chair from inside. I ubered home after that. Step count was still 17666 but I will not attempt such a long distance again, two hours each way is too long for me plus I was hot. I think an hour each way like my 10k or 5.6 mile is much better distance wise. I think walk wise, I should aim for no more than an hour each way. I should also save those for a cooler day, it was pretty hot.

    mara51506,

You gave it a good try. With the heat some of us are dealing with, it is very important to make sure we are getting good electrolytes.

    Mara,

Glad you made it safely home. It's good to challenge ourselves to find our limits and also good to know when to say stop. I tried a 10 mile walk in the heat about 4 years ago-it was awful. Even last week, I stupidly kept a golf commitment even though there was a heat advisory and a 108 degree heat index. I stopped golfing after the 6 hole and just rode the rest of the way in a cart. 17000 steps is still pretty darn impressive!

Thanks Chicagoan, I think I will try something like this again when the weather is a little cooler. I also think it would make sense to stop in at a coffee shop along the way as well just to recharge. Glad I was smart enough to ask for help when needed and the UBER came quickly. I think if I want that many steps, I will do some training for it when it is nicer out, southern Ontario sucks for the humidity. I am more used to 4 or 5 km each way, not 8 or 9km. Anyway, you live, you learn.

how are feeling now, Mara? Take it easy and make sure stay hydrated. I am sure you can reach your goal but the heat... I can’t do any activities that consume my energy in hot weather and in midday under direct sunlight or I get headache and my bp drops quickly, I knew this but I did walk under the sun anyway few weeks back, result: I had to deal with headache and weakness for several days. lesson learned again!

Snowdrop, I feel much better now. It was just so scary to know I was going to pass out if I did not get to sit down somewhere. I am grateful to the lady that heard me asking for someone to help me. Once the chair was brought out, I improved quickly. Once the UBER dropped me off, I came home and promptly fell asleep. I will go for similar numbers of steps but I will need to do more indoor work and maybe walk half an hour to an hour max outdoors in the morning.

Woke up fine today, legs did not feel sore at all which was a little bit surprising. Decided that I do not need to walk as far as I did just to prove something. I can get just as many steps in the house, shorter walks around the block and so on. Being so lightheaded and knowing I would pass out if I did not sit and there was initially nowhere I could sit was super scary. I need to do shorter walks that add up to the total I want it to be. I can also do very fast on the spot walking to workout music to add them up further. Keep up with the treadmill as well. I may just stay in today and get my steps in the house between treadmill, cubii and on the spot rapid walking. We will see.

I took today off the walking, will pick it up tomorrow. I may do another longer walk earlier in the day and strategically take small rest breaks. I will also only go for 12 km or 7.45 miles. I have successfully done 10 km with rest breaks so this may be possible tomorrow. I will just use the bus stop benches to rest along the way. Will also go earlier in the morning. I am just curious what the step count would be on this number of steps.

mara, I've actually looked this up because I was curious what the fitbit steps I track actually add up to. I found this calculator which seems about right http://www.kylesconverter.com/length/steps-to-kilo...

It says 12 km would be about 15-16000 steps

Yesterday I got 17865 and did not go 12k, perhaps a shorter stride for me. Even the 15000 to 16000 is decent for sure.

Another hot humid day here. I did take an early morning half hourish walk which gave 3500 steps, sitting at 6000 now. Since I am unwilling to die of the heat and not feeling the treadmill right this moment, I am marching almost on the spot, lifting my feet just as high as outside in 10 minute blocks with about 5 mins rest in between or so in the house. After breakfast, go for my last 7500 steps. I think goal should be 15000 as 20000 steps seems aggressive at this point.

I will do longer distance walks in the future but after almost fainting from the heat after walking across to the other end of the city, I realize that cooler weather must prevail. If I simply must be outside in the heat, no more than half an hour at a time. Not walking 2 hours getting to my destination and then expecting that I could walk two hours home without consequences.

Yes, I need to push past my I can't thoughts, but I do need to be careful not to go beyond what my body could take. I could, when it goes cooler, do the walk again but organize myself so that as I see a bench, I stop, sit down, eat some salty nuts keep the salt loss lower and take a bit of water. I will have to wait til it cools down.
