Snow-drop. Start when you can and work to string together as many consecutive days as possible. Starting where you are is great! As you string your days together it will be easier and you might find you can go longer too. It’s just about doing something to get stronger

Well, that was interesting. I initially thought 1 minute didn’t seem like too much of a challenge but I did it, sort of.

    1st plank - almost 4 seconds, lol

I’m overweight, so my belly still technically touched the carpet and I didn’t expect my back to fuss that quick but I tried and will try again.

Illimae, one day in! Good for you!! I have been plank for a little while so that’s why I am going longer.
My reason for doing this challenge is because of the extensive metastatic lesions in my spine and pelvis. I have been cautioned to be careful and protective of them because a fracture would be very bad for me. So my thought is to strengthen the supportive structures as much as I can.
Thanks coming along for the ride!

    Waves, challenge accepted 🤝

I think I’m gonna start with 20 sec or modified plank, since I have taken slow for few months, I see my MO next week, as soon as she gives me a green light I’ll start movements.

Good luck to you all on the plank inspiration. Good idea wavesofharmony. My ability to get up and down off the ground still is not the greatest. Have to lose some weight first as being over 200 lbs makes it more difficult. I don't look huge due to large hips and muscular thighs but it still is too much. Should I ever lose some weight, I would probably be able to use legs to help me up without arms pulling me u

One thing I was happy to find was that I can dial up my own music by 10 percent. I use VLC player on one of my phones that has the music. Dialing up this way means most songs are a fast enough pace to get me to 10000 with the indoor marching. Best part is the music does not sound super different, just a fraction faster. I got 1000 steps in just over 7 minutes which is good. I indoor walk on the spot a lot for the speed boost and do shorter ones to plug in any chore, housework or meal needed when I don't want outdoor walking. When outdoor walking, I slow down the pace and shrink the step to ensure I am paying attention to the foot that used to drag on the ground and trip me in the gap between sidewalk pavers.

Edited to add that the speed boost to my songs on my phone I listen to while walking put me up to an almost jogging pace. It also makes me feel more energetic as well. Walking on top of the step bench keeps me from thumping on the hard floor as well which is better for neighbours. I dare say, walks like this at 1000 steps at a time between laundry and dusting or filling out surveys will help me be productive for sure and make me feel good. If anyone is curious, I bumped up the speed 10 percent on the songs and it significantly ups the pace without being so fast that I cannot keep up. Also like my regular songs versus the cardio tracks on youtube I think.

Oh my, I tried the plank, and that is clearly an awesome core-strengthener! My core sucks, or shall we say, kindly, it's not as strong as it could be...I am going to try it daily as long as I can hold it and maintain a good form - maybe 15 seconds? Holy cow! But I like it, thank you for the challenge, wavesofharmony!

Hey my friends. I missed my plank yesterday so I resetting the calendar. I had a string of six days and just didn’t do it yesterday. Instead of getting down on myself, I am chalking it up to life and stepping back into the challenge. Today is a new day to do better!

Waves, not giving yourself a hard time is so true. I tend to be that way so I work really hard not to give myself one as well.

Found a different way to tack on steps in my day, don't laugh me out of the gym. My apartment is very tiny, tiny living room area, kitchen and bat area and tiny bedroom. I decided that since I already routinely walk on the spot for some steps, I will walk almost on the spot from one end of the living room to the other while listening to music. Takes a couple of hundred steps to go back and forth and even those steps count. In addition to any outdoor or treadmill, would cover my walking needs well.

    hello fitness friends,
I started the challenge yesterday, holding just until I could, I guess it was around 15 seconds. I’m going to give it a try again today, see if I can reach 20 second goal and able to continue to keep this for 28 days then I might stretch to 30 seconds....

Waves, many trainers suggest weekly activities for a 28 days challenge, meaning: 6 days of 7 days sticking the goal e.g. 30 sec plank, day 7- not entirely off but easier working-out, so with this guideline you are on track 👍

Mara, I get motivated by energetic songs.

Looking forward more fitness lovers join this challenge.

Hi Ladies of Fitness! Can I join in?

I would like to accept the announced challenge of plank (by wavesofharmony) & unannounced but still motivating example of constant walk (by mara51506).

Somehow, I abandoned plank for quite a while. In spring I've managed to do daily plank but max 30s. So 1min today was indeed a challenge for me. I usually did it in the mornings among other short exercises (~ 12-15min in total). But during this summer in the mornings I started to walk to the river for (short & not complete) immersion. In total the walk in the morning now stretched out to max 4km / 2.5mi at the max pace of 4.8 kmph / 3mph. This totally substituted my morning exercises at home. Especially because I found sport equipment in the field & now do 5-7min exercises on it. I hope now the time came for combining my exercises – at field & at home. Now it's already cold (10°C / 50°F ) for immersion so instead I'll resume my home exercises. My task now is more strength exercises & more intense (faster) walking. Faster walking could be very helpful since I still do wading till my knees & short walking barefoot on dewy grass...

mara51506, my ability to get down to & off the ground is not good too, my back is very stiff, so I do my plank on my bed. Later when I'll strengthen my core enough I will try to do plank on the ground.

I am doing the easy mans exercise today and doing marching steps throughout the apartment. Making it take 100 steps instead of the 10 steps to the kitchen, marching and pumping arms as well to make it a proper walk. I tend to like this if it is a day that I am waiting for a delivery, I don't like being outside the home for these days. Got 2000 already. Hopefully the delivery is earlier in the day vs later so I can go outside as well. Also helps me do chores as well and is not boring as I am watching where I walk. Good for days I am not feeling the treadmill or Cubii elliptical. Going to try this out all the time in the apartment and see what happens.

Only thing missing is thinking about strength training. Realistically, not interested in the gym as I don't want to pay and not use it which has happened. I will check Youtube for some bodyweight gentle workouts I think since I know the steps and walking are working. Build more muscle that way.

The best part about adding the extra steps for me is it gets me moving, allows for more chores, wait for a delivery and sit on my butt doing surveys on my laptop. Makes me more productive and allows for plenty of sitting.

Got my highest step total in one day ever today. I went for a walk to the grocery store earlier this morning and got around 3000 steps. Decided to do a long distance walk I have done before 16000 steps round trip for step total of 19000 for today. Took a small lunch break though surprisingly was unable to eat more than half my meal, left the bun and half the onion rings but it was still good anyway. I did get tired on the way there as it was humid so I rested at bus stop benches a couple of times.

I look like a drowned rat. It was sunny when I set out on my 12km/7.61 miles, totalling 18522 steps. Got a few things in Walmart and set off home, luckily it was still dry when I sat on a bus stop bench to eat a granola bar and drink bottle of water for the way home. My knapsack added some weight. Then of course it started raining, a light rain but enough to soak me through as I neglected to bring an umbrella. I enjoyed the walk, only super tired when I got close to home. I would normally have rested at a burger joint but no liking their meals so much lately. I do like the temperature now and even though I am soaked, it is not a bunch of sweat which is still nice. Will get something to eat and strip out of the wet clothes and swap for dry ones. Sitting on my butt the rest of the day

Not doing too much now. Already walked my 10000 steps since my grocery store did not have my chocolate milk. I was honestly surprised I chose to walk to the other store which was an extra 15 mins or so after over an hour getting to the first store. I am finding adding the pb and me peanut butter powder to my bean meals really makes a difference in my energy level as yesterday I walked 18000 steps yesterday from my house to Walmart. I only stopped to sit on a bench on the way home for a granola bar and water and really did not tire out until I was nearly home. Being wet sucked as it started raining yesterday but my boot and shoe dryer worked quickly to dry them out.

Feeling slightly lazy today but really want to continue my goal of at least 10000 steps per day. Not feeling like a super long walk today so my feeling is that if I do 10 to 12 sessions of 1000 steps, that will be sufficient. Will also give me time for laundry and household chores in between. Supposed to be nice this week so walking to the mall or another part of the city can happen anytime this week. I don't do as much treadmill walking as the walking on top of my step bench on the spot

I may even bust out Leslie Sansone on youtube, have not done her for quite a while, just a mile for her, we will see. Post when I hit total.

mara, I have a question for you. You use a Fitbit, right? I have for years (I have the One, which they don't make any more) and I love it. It measures steps, calories burned, flights of stairs and active minutes. I think it also measures sleep, but I've never used that.

My question is re: calorie burn. I RARELY, if ever, burn over 2.000 calories in a day, according to my FB. I have a FB friend who recently posted a picture of her dashboard. She walked 4.1 miles, 9,558 steps and burned 5,424 calories. She looks heavier than I am, but she's not obese. I weigh between 126-130 pounds am 5'3" and have NEVER burned anything close to that.

Do you burn that many calories? One time, I "cheated" when I was on the treadmill at the gym and I entered my age as 18 (I was 61 at the time) and my weight as 350 (it was closer to 120). I took a screen shot of the monitor and it said I walked 4.68 miles and burned 1156 calories.

Anyway, I'm just curious. Occasionally, my FB will take my weekly number and put it as my daily average. Yesterday, my "daily average" was 79,803 steps! Hilarious! Bottom line is that I just need to watch what I eat and modify it if the scale starts creeping up.

    Happy stepping!

Oh, one more thing (I sound like Columbo). I saw an umbrella yesterday on my Instagram feed that has a fan and a mister, if I saw that right! That would be so cool (no pun intended) on your walks on hot days. If I can find a link, I'll try to post it. That's it for now...

    Carol

I don't own a FitBit, I use an app on my android phone called Pedometer Step Counter that I got from google. When I go for walks outside, I always take my purse with me, put the phone in there and it counts the steps.

When it comes to how much I burn, it does not have my weight entered so it is just an estimate but on saturday I took 18572 which was 7.62 miles with calories burned at 989.5. Sunday I walked 10073 steps for a total of 4.61 miles and 536 calories burned.

I would say that your friend should get a new FitBit or double check settings. There is absolutely NO WAY 4.1 miles or 9858 steps would burn 5424 calories. Either the weight she put in is wrong, height is wrong but something is not right. Does not mean cheating necessarily but she should check the machine as that calorie burn is impossible. I could see 542 calories burned for that step count but not 5424. There is a mistake somewhere.

I take my calorie burn with a grain of salt as I never entered my weight in the app. Never wanted to wear a FitBit because I could see myself being too obsessed whereas the step counter only works when I use the phone to walk at home, on treadmill or outdoors.

For me when it comes to calories, I know that if I eat less junk food and more of my bean meals with different meat or meatless options with my seasonings and queso, I might lose some weight or at least not gain any. I really love chocolate and cannot control myself. If it is in the house, I eat it all with a day or too. Peanut butter used to be a problem but now is not so bad.

The umbrella sounds like a neat idea for sure.

sunshine, I use a fitbit ( & sync it to My Fitness Pal for calorie tracking) & there's no way those numbers are right. there's a good chart here

    https://www.verywellfit.com/pedometer-steps-to-cal...

that's why I always say you can't outrun your fork. "The amount of calories you'll burn running 5 miles depends on your pace and body weight. According to Harvard Medical School, a 125-pound person will burn about 500 calories, a 155-pound runner will burn about 620 calories and a 185-pound person burns about 740 calories running 5 miles at a pace of 6 miles per hour."

most people aren't fit enough to run for almost an hour at 6mph & a big mac is over 500 cal...

moth, I think we're Fitbit friends (unless there is another Moth Y on there). I'm Carol S. If it is, in fact, you, I like your picture at the water's edge with a dog. Mine is the same dog as my profile picture here, except he's got his paws up on the side of tree, going after a squirrel.

I don't see how those calorie burn numbers can be right, but I just thought it was curious. I don't worry abut the calorie report very much. I lowered my goal because I got tired of if telling me I never reached my goal. I care more about my weight and my step count. I totally agree that you can't outrun your fork!

Just got home from a lovely 9km/5.64 mile walk. The temperature was comfortable and did not get too sweaty. Face is still red but it usually does that. I did stop for a pop in the burger joint where I picked up a couple of patties. I also ate a granola bar. We have to show vaccination proof and health cards or other forms of ID. While I sat drinking my pop, I heard someone make a commotion about having to show vaccination proof. I just felt really bad for the employee dealing with this. Was about to stand up and tell the person to knock it off but another employee stepped in and took care of it.
