mara, can you get Propel water in Canada? It comes in little packets and it has electrolytes in it. I think it's made by Gatorade. My husband swears by it when he's hiking in the Sierras. Would that help you when you're out walking in the heat?

I'm very impressed with your walking. I try to get out twice a day, but a lot of my "steps" are on my Cuubi.

Sunshine, most likely I can get propel. I may look into that when it cools down. I am being more careful and limiting time in the heat. The walk I tried on Thursday last week was not planned on my end well. I had plenty of water but did not allow enough rest. Though I was covered up in a UV shirt, should have brought my UV umbrella as well to keep out of the sun. Never want to be in a position where I am coming home and know I will pass out if I cannot sit soon. Perhaps, when it is cooler, I will plot out a city hike where I know there will be places I can sit and take in a quick snack, salty nuts for example and still bring extra water. I do agree that my electrolytes definitely got messed up from all my copious sweating. Good for you getting your steps both outside and on the cubii. I keep forgetting to use mine.

Today I am going for a goal of 15000, did my half hour outside this morning but it is very humid so the rest is happening as almost marching on the spot, just lifting my legs the same height as outside and moving across my tiny living room very slowly. Water is close by and it is doable. Already up to 8000 steps with lots of rest between sessions. Easy for me to walk so far. One of my fears is getting extra heavy as I have gained weight over the pandemic. Least I can do is get some extra activity. I am also breaking the walks up, no need to do it all at once. Planning to pay more attention to my caloric intake since I like to include different ingredients in my basic beans repertoire. Looking into other low cal things besides wheat bran add protein as well.

Edited to add, not a bad first day, reached 10000 steps with the one outdoor walk and some indoor steps as well. I will be satisfied with that and call it a day.

Yesterday I weeded, trimmed up some plants, hauled yard refuse to the bin, ran up and down the 23 stairs in my backyard many, many times - and was drenched in sweat, which felt good (then of course the shower afterwards was wonderful). I haven't been counting steps, should probably do that, as my approach has been "do physical stuff until sweaty and tired", which is not very scientific. I do like wearing my old skate sneakers in the yard, makes me feel like a youngster!

That definitely a lot of sweaty work with the back and forth and no, steps themselves are not the only way to measure exercise. Sometimes your approach of getting sweaty and tired is better than being so regimented. I love that you felt so youthful, I feel that way when I am walking to my music too.

Well, I am productive with myself today. Made a more reasonable step goal of 10000 steps every day. I will get those steps in the morning. I am roughly doing 10 minutes of the on the spot walking, no shoes required for this which is why I like it and doing my chores in between sessions. I got a load of laundry done in between times. I figure if I do the 10000 steps daily, I can start adding an extra 1000 to my daily goal and that may be more reasonable. It s hot and humid so is definitely not a day to plan a long walk. I will have plenty of time for those once the temp is in the low 70s or 80. I already learned my lesson about getting lightheaded from the heat and having to hold onto a pole at a bank and as for help to get a seat. Never again.

Walking shorter walks of 10 minutes or so throughout the day is just as effective and is what is working for me. I really want to fit back into the jeggings that I was wearing when I moved here. I have court coming in October and would like to look more presentable in court.

So was asked by a friend while talking on the phone why I like to walk so far. She knows I live alone, yes I have an older brother and his family but I really do not participate in much of what they do. Living alone and having to be careful how I spend and make money, there is not a lot I can do besides surveys, laundry (which I love doing to this day) and walking. I told her that I walk because there is really nothing else for me to do. I don't have other friends I see on the regular, I see my family once a week or so but it is a really quick drive and groceries if needed and I appreciate that but it is not really visiting with each other. 95 per cent of the time I am alone. Walking allows me to see people and places I might not normally go and push myself further with more caution. I am also limited by not having a car, if I had a car, I could drive to a nice park and walk through it or drive to a beach and walk along the shore early in the day. That is part of it.

I personally cannot wait until the weather cools down so I can devise an all day sort of walk across the city. I feel great, I love people watching, this ticks my boxes and makes me happier than I have been for a long time. As long as I am able and the weather allows, I will be out training myself to go further and further until winter arrives. That I told her is why I walk. I also walk a lot indoors on the spot, makes me feel just as happy as on the treadmill or outside on the street.

Thanks for the research info wavesofharmony, i will check them out further.

I was craving some outdoor air but it is still hot and humid. Felt like 90 when I got up. First walk, I just put some sunscreen on as it was only about 8 am. Came home after the 30 min walk, drank water and took in some salt. I did a second walk about half an hour later but this time since the sun was out, I busted out my UV umbrella, rated for both UVA and UVB to keep me out of the sun and my neckfan was going full blast. Walked another 30 mins and although my face was red as usual, the skin on my face did not feel overly cooked. Going to have breakfast, and I will check the weather. Not walking in stupid heat or if need outdoors, cut the walk in half. We will see. Wanting at least 10000 steps. We will see,

Edited to add that I did get my 10000 steps in 3 separate walks, long cooldown period between each one. Undecided whether I will walk again. Feel pretty good even if it is grossly humid. Brought the umbrella as well on the last walk but it was mostly cloudy. Wore the neckfan again, really should keep that on. I would appreciate the humidity going away as I really want another long distance walk. Not going to push my luck now again.

Doing an easy walk today because there is more I need to around the house, just walking on the spot, lifting feet same amount as if walking outside, and doing 1000 steps at a time. Goal will be 10000. I realize that if I am eating proper portions, that is more than enough steps on a daily basis. If I get more fine, but I should have the 10000 on a daily basis that I shoot for. Inside walking on the spot or the treadmill, the cubii or outdoors, it is all the same to me. Long distance walking outside will happen once it does not feel into the 90s. If hot and outside now in this heat, no more than half an hour at a time is done.

Thank you wavesofharmony for the article, confirms what I have thought for a long time. I honestly think it is the music that gets me moving and feeling happy alongside the walking. I've stayed in today though because it is still hot and humid and did not feel like dealing with that today. Enjoying the walking on the spot and taking breaks to do different things.

Well, our weather is finally back to being far less humid though still warm. Planning a walk up to another Harvey's for a burger. Not going to attempt the 16K one across the city yet, think I need more training. I can do 10K or about 6.5 miles round trip without much problem. Going to walk up my street on the way, little bit hilly but would be good for me. My next goal would be to increase walking time by 1K at a time and work up to it.

Hard to believe that summer is almost over but if that means not much humidity, I will gladly take it. I have still had people ask why I walk so much. I say why not. I am on my own and these walks do allow me to see different parts of the city that I would not normally walk.

I hear you Mara, the humidity in Texas right now is a beast but I’ve kept up the morning walks (mon-fri for about a month now). Today was 1.6 miles/3,000+ steps and DH and I saw 5 deer and several cranes at the park. The park area is wooded and located in a large reservoir, not a playground neighborhood type park.

Oh that's awesome Mae. Our humidity has gone away and the temperature is comfortable. You would not know it looking at my face, bright red from the effort but my cheeks were not overly hot. We are hitting weather that is ideal for walking. I am going to figure out different routes to go as well. I still want that 16K walk but will have to train more gradually. I also kept the sun off me with my UV umbrella, no idea how I would have felt without.

I love that you get to look at nature while walking, sound beautiful. I enjoy walking through the neighbourhood admiring the doggos that come along.

It's a cool and rainy day here so I'll be sure to get out at least a few times - my favourite weather lol. I hope I feel better today than yesterday = yesterday after coming home from my MO appointment I felt weak and dizzy. Checked my BP and glucose and everything was normalish but I had to lie down for the afternoon. I got better by dinner and was able to go for an evening walk at least. Still not sure what the heck that was....maybe just fatigue catching up. I'm on steroids and I think they're masking fatigue so maybe...?

Anyway, hoping for a better day today.

mara, thank you! much better today! Yes, isn't that feeling awful? I hate it. It seems so minor in many ways but yet it's so debilitating....

I'm glad you got your nice long walk in today!

my perfect weather for walking is when it’s cloudy with a light rain! I did 45 minutes walk yesterday morning with 2 small breaks, just because it was cloudy and cool!

Regarding limitations, I learned from my own experiment, I am good with 20-30 minutes walk and/or light exercises (not cardio), I stick with this plan for a good while. every time I pushed myself to a further step, the result was opposite.

Moth, check your oxygen level, poor air quality ie smoke/ fire might be a factor.

Mara, I’d like to learn how you prepare/ train for a long walk.

Snow-drop, oh yes, I did that, esp since I'm still dealing with a pneumonitis flare. Did a full set of vitals, SpO2, BP and even ran a quick gluc check (because the immunotherapy I'm on can cause sudden pancreatic islet cell failure) but nope. Everything was fine. It was just sudden vertigo. I've had BPPV before & was worried it might be that again but if it was, it sorted itself out quickly. I'm feeling great today, so who knows!

I share your love of rainy walks!

Snowdrop, I am basically trying to add more steps in my day. So for example, yesterday I walked 9 km roundtrip. My ultimate goal is to walk 16km roundtrip. My thought was to walk around my neighbourhood and come home for rest breaks, like 5 or 10 mins, drink lots of water and go out again. I would want to hit 21000 steps as that is what it shows as 16km. I think I will start that way and see how it goes, easier now that it is not hot.

I don't intend to do the superlong two hour walks which was what would have given me the original step count. I think the breaks in between are the best way to go. Two hours at a time is just too long, have to break it up. I can walk just over an hour at a time and then stop and eat and come home the same distance. Two hours there and back is just too much.

I am doing a massive step count today, 18000. Half an hour each hour until I hit the count. It is cool outside so nice walking and resting at home between walks is sensible for me to do. The walking will still count even if there are rests. I also don't have any appointments or places that I wish to go either.

Edited to add, decided to modify my step goal to 10000 which I already got earlier. I am realizing that really expecting 18000 is obsessive. 10000 per day is plenty and really doable. Does not mean I cannot walk more but I do not need to expect a ridiculous amount of walking. Keeping it more realistic for my self.

Mae - parakeets fly free and wild around my neighborhood and roost in neighbor trees. I know various houses on my walks that host a bunch of them (usually the ones with nice feeder set ups) and its amazing to see a cloud of green feathers go up when you walk past! London has a lot of feral parakeets in parks as these birds bred from formerly kept birds that escaped.

Been getting back into exercise lately with cycling and some weights and more skiing motions (side to side "sliding", double poling stuff, etc) as I very much want to get back on my xc skis this winter but without core strength it can be dangerous on the back. Unfortunately a lot of these actions mess up digestion a bit to where Im not as hungry or I eat and bloat, so today I did my low-impact barre youtube video, but with Other Half for the first time. He did pretty good on plies, but wow is he not fluid at all!

    illimae,

It’s as simple as getting into a good plank position (I hold my plank on my elbows but you can also hold the position on your hands) and hold that position for 1 minute. If you can’t hold for 60 seconds, start where you can hold in good form. Make sure to engage your abs and don’t let your butt sag (that will put stress on your low back). If you need pictures I can post.
