Mara I am so sorry about your injuries, how is elbow now? not a great news but it is good your head/eyes are ok. Please be careful walking outside, you are master of planning but how about breaking down the outside walk to 10-15 minutes few times a day and do the rest of walking on treadmill, of course when you feel it is good to start? I lose control on my steps easily when I get tired, easily miss steps, or my leg starts dragging. are you going to have some physical therapy when your elbow heals? Best wishes on your recovery and please update here, I suppose it is not easy typing with broken elbow. (((Hugs)))

I have not been active for few months, and I understood my ankles stiffness got better with less activity, interesting! I need back on track....

Hi! I've been lurking for a little bit so thanks to everyone who's shared their experience so far. Other than walking my dog, my whole exercise routine came to a halt last month when I found out my cancer had returned. It was partly because I didn't feel like it mentally, partly because my schedule got all out whack from all the appointments, and partly because of my pleural effusion and two thoracentesises (thoracentesi?!) I had. But this week I've felt too healthy to continue being a bum! And I know it will be better in the long run to start up again.

A work friend of mine is a personal trainer on the side and I've been working with her for over a year now. She knows what's going on so with a few restrictions, I'm hoping to start up again, three times a week to start. Fingers crossed it goes well!

And I hope you start feeling better soon, Mara.

My broken arm is still not 100% & I'm not a confident xcountry skier but I got out there anyway on the ancient skis from the garage with boots which are too big for me lol

Moth! That audio had me laughing so hard! Good for you, good job. Be careful though with that arm!

It is a balmy 80 degrees here in Texas. Went out for a 1.6 mile walk after having done no exercise for a week (besides cleaning and furiously wrapping). DH and I had lots to talk about as I just watched Saving Private Ryan and have been reading a little about WWII. Caught Labyrinth on PlutoTV yesterday which took me back to my childhood. Watched Don’t Look Up on Netflix today, pretty good.

Good job Moth on the skiing, you look great. I am still not walking at this point yet, going to begin treadmill work and if mild outside, go for walks there too. Got to get back on the horse again, face has healed elbow is not too bad with its fracture, bruising is subsiding there and turning wonderful colours as well. Pain is better too. Just have to pay attention to my walking and lifting my feet so I don't trip again.

Hi all! I'm a bit new here, and am so glad to have found this thread. I haven't yet figured out how to post my tx history in my signature. But dx de novo in May, mets to bones, on Kisqali & anastrozole. Two young kiddos and a family that likes to stay active.

All that to say hi! and I look forward to sharing encouragement & motivation with you lovely ladies. My current fitness routine is loads of walking and a rowing machine for the too-cold days.

Welcome Mexhay to the group, I love the walking and rowing machine workouts you are doing, so good for your body!

I have been less active, took a nasty fall walking a couple of weeks and fractured my elbow and hit my face as well. Fast forward a couple of weeks and my face and scrapes have healed and the bruises that caused so much pain to my arm are subsiding as well so getting ready to venture outdoors again. I won't let the fall permanently stop me from walking though it did shake my confidence a bit.

Took a vigorous (for me) walk in the crisp and chilly sunshine on this first day of the year, saw a neighbor with her corgi dog, who she was restraining from trying to run over and jump on me (which I really wouldn't have minded, those ears are just too adorable), and felt good! Goal is to try to feel good as much as is possible. My back always feels better when I walk regularly, and I get to see dogs, too! 😁🐕

That's great. I am planning on some outdoor walking providing not too much snow is out there. I don't mind the cold, it's the hidden ice under snow that may pose a problem though I may wear cleats on one pair of sneakers and then take them off in store or hospital, have trouble removing and putting the cleats back on so this may be a better option for me.

Walking is my jam! But I'm finding it JUST TOO COLD these days to get out much. Either I need to toughen up or find an alternative that both gets me moving and clears my mind. Rowing is a great workout but it's not as mentally grounding as a good long walk. Mara - so sorry about the fall! Was it ice related??

Mexhay, no there was no ice or snow. It was me tripping over a sidewalk paver. I did not lift my foot enough and it got me. Still have not walked to much since, even indoors. I know I will get back to it as time goes on but have not found the mental desire to do it yet. Been sitting watching movies or doing surveys, I am healed from the fractured elbow and face almost looks normal. We will see what happens in the future.

Mexhay, I was thinking about your issue with winter walking. If there is a mall nearby, why not do some mall walking if no treadmill or if you do not want to walk on the spot in the house. Leslie Sansone never failed me in a pinch.

I am getting my Herceptin today so will try a walk to and from the hospital, tired of sitting at home and having my mind keep saying no.

Mara, I admire your determination. Btw, I know so many people who’ve taken a tumble on the sidewalk, and then in general, I know a lot of people who’ve tripped and fallen in and around their homes. My dental tech, on her way out to walk the dogs, missed the last step going down her deck and took a severe tumble. She ended up with numerous foot surgeries that involved pins and plates and months of non-weight bearing on it. She’s just a young woman, and her little girl would say, “Mommy, if only you hadn’t missed that last step.”

I took a break over the Christmas/New Year’s holidays from both my exercise classes. I gave me a chance to reassess how the schedule and routines are working for me. I’m going to try a water aerobics class on a different day at a different time so as not to be rushed when dh comes home from work.

DivineMrsM, I am a determined person but I should preface todays post as "Oops, I did it Again.)

Walked to the cancer clinic, almost marching, lifting legs super high which was tiring but felt better. It was above freezing to although there was some ice on the way, not slippery in my boots. But after my Herceptin, the temperature must have dropped and when I got to the cross walk, I slipped on some ice down the curved edge and landed on my butt. Started crying as I always do since I am unable to pick myself up from the ground. Two nice lady helped me up, cried some more tears, mostly just feeling sorry for myself but got home no problem. Will just attach cleats to one pair of shoes and wear them unless snow has totally melted. That would have avoided slipping.

The other thing nice about having a big butt is that when you land on it, you don't really hurt too much. I will continue to walk but go back to my cleats. Was just disappointed as this was my first real outdoor walk since the trip and fall where I fractured elbow and landed on face. I won't let this keep me in though as our sidewalks don't really get much sidewalk plow attention.

Raking rocks will be my daily workout for the next week or so. I just got started but already see benefits, lose rocks are a big trip hazard for me on the mountain.

I did get a pair walking poles from Chicagoan and plan to use those for extra stability out walking. Watching few videos that off not only speed walking but also walking with extra balance.

Hi mara51506, I used to love walking, 5-12 mile hikes. I can only manage 2 miles on a good day now. Could you post the link for the exercise videos you have found? Particularly the one with balance as I have neuropathy. Good luck with your fitness plan and using the walking poles. Thanks.

Mara, the balance exercise video is the first thing I watched this morning and I love it! I will rewatch it later and write down the different exercises the two men recommend so I can try to do them daily. Interestingly, we do a number of these in my water aerobics class. But I love the idea of being able to do them at home as well. They're so simple and won't even take up that much time and could even be done a few times a day.

I've definitely heard that balance becomes more vital as we age. I remember reading one doctor recommending that you try to stand on one foot while putting your sock and shoe on the other foot, then vice versa, to develop balance. Pretty sure I don't have it in me to do that, but the exercises in the video will work just as well. Thanks so much for sharing it! I especially appreciated the banter between the two guys. Many videos turn me off with too much incessant talking and little action, but they add the right touch of humor while moving along with the exercises.

Divine, I love Bob and Brad. They are the two most famous physical therapists on the internet, in their own opinion as the slogan goes. They have tons of great content to help with quite a few things as well and what they suggest to treat stuff is accessible to most people as well.

I am very deconditioned. My oncologist enrolled me in a cancer rehab class; 3x/week for 12weeks.

We will see. I am looking forward to it.

Good job Sandi Beach, keep us posted on progressed.

It is very cold with a little show here. I already attached cleats to my sneakers so I will not slip and will probably take a couple of walks. I was surprised on Wednesday that I could make it for over an hours of walking roundtrip to and from the cancer clinic that I could sustain the amount I was lifting my feet. Almost marched there. I did slip on black ice at the crosswalk but that was unavoidable. I did try a walker yesterday but because the apartment does not have an elevator, more of a pain than anything else folding it up and carrying it so will skip it. Leave for if I ever cannot walk. I have walking poles or a cane for extra balance if needed.

Thanks for the links ,mara. I have found Bob and Brad videos, but not this one. I use their self foot massage to help with neuropathy.

This physio has lots of posts for seniors (like me).

I like them because I can choose a one that suits how I am feeling on the day; long or short. I just need to get up and do them more!

denny, that is a great video, too! I like Mike's presentation of the exercises, and they're done at a nice pace.

I find myself more motivated to exercise for the purpose of improving balance than losing weight. The balancing exercises aren't strenuous which I like. I've been doing Bob and Brad's' exercises for a couple days and will incorporate ones from Mike's video now, too.

There's a space around my kitchen island that works well for doing many of these when I have a few spare minutes. Standing up and sitting down on a chair is easy enough for me to do with my hands on my chest, but wow do my legs feel it the next day. Walking heal, toe, heal, toe is a bit more challenging for me. I surprised myself by being able to balance on one foot at a time. It's not something I was able to do last year. I credit the line dance class I started late last summer for the improvement. There are many line dance sequence steps requiring balance, like the weaving Mike does in his video, so I've been working on it. Plus the dancing requires you do the steps in time to the music, so that's always a fun challenge.

However, I don't think I'm coordinated enough to brush my teeth while balancing on one foot…..

Very happy with the videos; thanks so much, mara and denny!

I try to stand on one foot while brushing my teeth. Divine, coordination is a weird thing, like patting your head and rubbing your tummy. My balance is still really good. I can stand while pulling on my jeans and such. It is my overall stamina for walking that is going but I think that is mainly because I have not been doing it enough. mara, you put me to shame. It is a sunny day today, the snow we got yesterday didn't stick so all the previously shovelled streets are good for walking. So I will go out today. I need to get some basics like cat food and walk to the bank and pay my bills at the ATM even though I could do it on my PC.

As they used to say "back in the day" --- Keep On Truckin'

I did get a 4 km walk in since I needed a health card and ontario ID card since don't drive or travel. It was cold but that did not bother me. There was a lot of ice on the sidewalks which was not enjoyable even though I was wearing cleats, just irritated that our sidewalks are not at least sanded if not enough snow to plow. I did not slide but did feel quite nervous. I was going to walk home too but changed my mind and took an UBER. I figure I will NOT spend much time walking outdoors until the ice melts, not interested in dealing with that even though I had cleats. Will stick to the treadmill instead.
