Doing some outdoor walk, going to grocery store etc. I obviously need more outdoor walking. I find I need to stop for a couple of seconds too often for my taste. Always feel better after the walk but doing it is difficult. I think I need to focus on more outdoor stuff than just the treadmill since I don't walk on completely flat surfaces. Oh well, stopping at every corner for 5 or 10 seconds is not bad, I still got the walk in. Will train for more outdoor stuff before winter shows up since I will still have to walk for any bus to get around town.

Mara51506- yes, I think that you are right, spending any time going outside is good. Your stamina will probably improve as well. Do you have much snow and ice in the winter? My son lives in Montreal and the winters get treacherous there for walking. I am actually going near your town- to Toronto later this month.

Yes, we do get a fair snow and ice but I have great footwear. I was walking outside no matter the weather between 2017 and 2018 but my mom's health was on a decline so all my energy was spent looking after me and her at the same time. I got deconditioned. Getting back to it now. I went out this evening after supper and did not mind the walks to the bus stops. Not too hot and did not have to stop nearly as much. Going to try walking outdoors first thing in the mornings when it is nice. Fall is here and it is not nearly so humid as usual in the summer. I will also keep doing stair climbing on my step bench to condition my legs further. My right leg is still weaker than the left. My fault, I have always liked climbing stairs with my left foot only. Left leg is fine, right leg needs some work.

Mara it's wonderful though that you are getting that many steps per day! I do 45 minutes Leslie Sansone and I'm bopping around the house all day and I don't often reach 10K steps but I sure feel accomplished when I do! I'm also thinking about how great the weather is and how nice it is to walk outdoors. The Leslie Sansone stuff has been great but I could also be walking on the track or treadmill at the Y or I could be walking outdoors early mornings.
Since my back was soooo affected by compression fractures, arthritis and disc problems and I'm still rehabbing from that I do a LOT of PT every day to strengthen glutes and legs, and to get some basic core strength and balance. When I think that just a few months ago I could not walk upright or even sit up for very long and not here I am walking miles a day and doing all this PT. My back feels better but not back to where I want it just yet. I sat at the piano today and could only last about 20 mins before my back started talking to me.

I highly doubt my ortho would approve of my walking outdoors in Western NY winters. I'm too big of a fracture risk. I miss skiing and skating too but I can adjust to different activities. I've been to London, Mara - we go through on the way to visit family in Detroit!

I think tomorrow morning will be sunny and cool. Might a a great day to get up and outside for walking.

Apple Watch can notify if I fall? This would be an excellent feature for me to have. Gotta check that out.

That's awesome improvement Moomala, inspiring for sure. I get what you are saying about walking in the winter, especially with bone mets and fractures. Glad that you are able to manage walking with all that pain.

When I was walking all the time, I used certain footwear depending on the type of weather. If it was icy spots, I put cleats on the bottoms of my shoes which steadied me. Slush required boots with vibram heels. I just walked slightly bent forward so that I would not be able to have my foot go out from under me. It changes the centre of gravity when leaning slightly forward. I also walk like a penguin, shuffle along to try to prevent slipping. It has helped a lot over the years.

Hi everybody... just checking back in. You all inspire me with your dedication to getting activity in every day. I feel like I am extreme - all or nothing. I am FINALLY recovered from the trip - it did take about a week, and went to yoga yesterday. Even in that nice toasty, humid room, my muscles were so tight... I could barely move, so off to yoga again today but looking at this next work week, I don't know how I will fit anything in and I really need to commit to at least the 10K steps that you all do!

Hope everybody is having a great weekend!

    XO

Andi67 I went to a funeral/celebration for three hours yesterday and then a crazy loud raucous party for another five hours after that. My back is TOAST today from people hugging me (Not complaining becuase the love felt wonderful, but that was a LOT of squeezing of my back which has all those compression fractures) along with being on my feet for too long, so I am skipping today and probably tomorrow too. Gotta do whatcha gotta do. I hate missing my walks but I can feel my body today saying "nope" I think if I'd hiked the matterhorn I'd need a good week's recovery too. Yikes!

I did some walking in my apartment, just back and forth from living room to bedroom with music. Then had to go to the grocery store. Sitting at 13400 steps so far today. May do some more after supper, not sure if I want to do it on treadmill or just walking back and forth again with music. Just got some truly wireless bluetooth ear buds that work so much better than the bluetooth ones with a cord. Music cuts out way less frequently. I think this way is not boring as my cats are able to provide an obstacle course for me. They like to follow me around in case there will be food involved.

    Yay Mara, that’s awesome!

Due to appointments and errands I haven’t been to the gym in a week and I feel terrible. I can’t believe how stiff and achy I am from sitting around all week. Back at it on Tuesday.

Wow everyone! Such good work getting your move and groove on!

I woke up today and just felt so blah! Like I am moving through thick mud or something. WHY!???

I was going to go to Zumba but couldn't muster up the energy. Instead I went to friends and family's houses in a beautiful section of Philly called Mt. Airy. It is very lush with gorgeous vegetation and gardens as well as gigantic old houses with tons of character. Huge, old trees! I saw a giant old ginkgo. Maybe the oldest I have ever seen! With huge ginkgo leaves and the biggest berries ever! Each one was the size of a golf ball! Thankfully they are not getting stinky yet!

I took a long walk around the neighborhood with my SIL and her cute doggy. I feel like that was about as much as I could muster up. The muddy meandering is still happening. Tomorrow I will get to Tai Fit and Abs. I have an MRI on Tuesday so unfortunately, I do not think I will end up exercising that day. I get wiped out from the tests and my anxiety (which is way better, but still gets bad on scan day for me). Hopefully Wednesday I will be back in the exercise game again.

I have to remember that even just getting out and taking a 20 minute walk counts!

    Love and hugs to all,

    Philly

Hope everyone has a good day today! I finally got out to the woods for a hike Saturday morning (notquite 2 miles) and then it was back to house renovation yesterday. Hiking scheduled for today and tomorrow and just started Whole30 this morning. Of course I want a cookie😁.

Philly, I sometimes can only do 5 mins at a time but I get some good energy even from that. My strength training could use some work.

iwrite ok back away from the cookies! (as I sit here munching a square of ghirardelli chocolate! I have a fairly decent diet and don't do anything particularly special other than just making sure I eat enough fruits and veggies and as little processed foods as possible.

Philly good luck with this MRI. I am headed for one soon too and they are not in any way shape or form fun for me. Walk around the block in a beautiful neighborhood sounds really great to me. For me sometimes just knowing that I moved that day can help me feel I've accomplished something. I heard this piece about pain and exercise on NPR this morning. I found it very interesting.

I wish I could do strength training mara. I'm really missing that. At the moment I'm still in recovery from these compression fractures in the spine and I am only allowed to walk, and do core and balance work. I keep thinking I should be able to do light upper body weight-lifting from a seated position but permission for that has not yet been granted. My back is nottttt feeling too awesome still today after all the weekend partying, but I did a Leslie Sansone Two Mile walk and my PT exercises plus balance work. All very gently today. I am a total Type A and am known to beat myself up if I don't do what I *think* I should be doing. Today is good exercise in doing a little bit of physical activity AND feeling good about what I did do. (because my goal was to walk four miles today and be more vigorous with core work)

Good job Moomala. Today was about housework and laundry. Guess that would count as exercise. Will resume tomorrow.

Also, I do not not think what you did today was a little bit of exercise, 2 miles of leslie is a half hour of high paced action. Good job on the PT and balance work on top of it all.

Mara- Laundry and housework definitely count!

Moomala- Thanks for the help! I didn’t eat the cookie and got thru day one without cheating.

I did get out on a new trail yesterday. Love walking through the woods. I saw leaves on the ground and the corn is starting to turn color.

My step counts have been loose estimates lately as I lost my Fitbit and don’t know how accurate the health app on my phone is. Do you all have tracking wristbands you like? Some that work for swimming? I trust your recommendations more than those on Amazon. :)

    Let’s keepmoving!

I did do some walking, about 5000 steps by treadmill, the other 5000 just walking back and forth in my apartment. Was a bit too hot for my liking outside. Taking it easy with some laundry and TV tonight.

Good job to everyone else, you all inspire me to keep going.

    Hi All,

I don’t post on this thread much but do follow everyone’s progress. I’m a walker - have to be with a dog - so step count is never an issue with me. However, I have discovered that the rest of me is falling apart!

For ages I’ve been trying to get myself to try yoga again. I joined an online yoga site ages ago but could never quite get motivated to do any of the classes. Fortunately (or not) the site launched a three week challenge and I thought okay, get with it!

Well, OMG! It’s killing me and I’ve only done two short beginner classes. I have zero flexibility and struggle to get through the basics. Please tell me it gets better! My hat goes off to you yogis!

Sadiesservant, the yoga will improve for you. My mother had a friend that was riddled with arthritis and she started going to hot yoga and it has helped immensely. It will definitely make you feel better. Just do what you can do, no poses that are uncomfortable or have the yogi demonstrate a modified version. Any good class should offer that, if not look up a modified version of what ever poses are difficult. That will will help a lot.

Sadieservant- Yoga does get easier with more practice in my experience. Hope you find it helpful!

Got in a two mile walk this morning before it heats up. Sooo humid out there! Yoga this afternoon.

Hope you all are having a good day!!

sadie- I agree with Mara. Do not hurt yourself. Be with a yoga teacher who can modify any pose you need to have modified. Use props to support your joints til you get more lumber and strong. Consider restorative yoga. I’ve come a long way in my 8 years and I feel so much better- even taking the AIs. You could also make a mini home practice for your real tight areas - to do in between classes.

    Thanks ladies.

Today I crashed and burned on the three week challenge. My hip and neck are NOT happy. I haven’t given up but thought a break was in order and think I need to focus on gentle flow to start. I have extensive bone mets, have had to have my hip radiated and more recently have been having problems with numbness and tingling in my right arm. Probably a pinched nerve from my cervical spine. I do think the stretching is helping my arm but the rest of my body is decidedly unhappy with my practice.

On the up side it has pushed me to book a one hour massage. 😁

Got my steps today at the hospital as I had an appointment at the cancer centre. While waiting, I went up one floor and walked around since it is circular, then after the appointment, went down farther around the hospital to get something to eat. I always get hungry there. I always think that is strange since when I started cancer treatment, I could not stand eating or the smell of food in the chemo suite.

Sadie - I finally started doing yoga earlier this year again. I did it religiously prior to my Stage IV diagnosis and all of my bone mets, and the first time I went, I couldn't even lift my arms over my head in that first "mountain pose" or whatever it is. I always do hot yoga as the heat relaxes me and makes it easier, but I was TERRIBLE. Not to mention my balance issues from neuropathy....I toppled over every time I did the tree pose. It has gotten a lot better...I still struggle and I make sure that I am close to a wall for the balance poses, but my range of motion has gotten a lot better, and I think it's helped my core strength a little. Anyway, any excuse for a massage is good!

I feel like I am in a bit of a slump... telling myself I am still recovering from my hike, but I don't think that is it! I need some new activities to mix things up, maybe..... I did start a cleanse today. 12 days of no sugar, dairy, alcohol, gluten and supposedly no caffeine but that is not happening. I cant' give up coffee. So of course, it's day one, and I WANT A COOKIE TOO!

Hope everyone has a great week and can get out and enjoy the beautiful fall weather! (Philly, the walk around that neighborhood sounded lovely. I LOVE LOVE LOVE old houses and beautiful neighborhoods! I can walk forever when I have architecture and landscaping and flowers and trees to look at!)

    XO

Had my scans today - echo, CT and bone scan. Since I had about a 2 1/2 hour window in between the CT and the bone scan, I went for an almost five mile walk with my husband at the nearby regional park. It's 82 degrees and humid here today. Whew. I'm tired out now, but it was nice to do something physical in between all of that lying down for machines.

Finally have been more consistent with walking and with yoga. I haven't been teaching many classes this summer, so it gets me out of my zone too. Now that fall is here, I will be teaching a couple of yoga classes at the local Gilda's club, so that will force me to be more regular since I have to make sure I'm prepared. I always do a few sun salutations every day, but I always feel my best when I'm actually doing at least 20 minutes f yoga daily.

Sadieservant - online yoga is a nice option, but for beginners, I find the classes can often be too much and they move too fast since the instructor can't see what you are doing and where you are struggling. If you can go to a local studio, I would agree with nkb and mara - a good teacher will really be able to help you with any areas of difficulty. Hope you can find a good option locally.

My workout today was mostly housework, laundry and cleaning. I also did some pacing in my apartment. No treadmill today. Only got 10000 steps throughout the day. My new goal going forward is going to be 15000. I would like to lose just a few pounds and I am not interested in changing my diet significantly. I don't snack alot, just enjoy a bit of sugar in cereal and dessert after dinner. Not willing to part with those things.

    Hello friends!

I love reading people’s updates and you all continue to inspire me 🤗

I go through so many ups and downs energy-wise. Yesterday and today in my head I went to Zumba.

But the reality is that I didn’t do anything exercise wise yesterday except rest and today I have done a bunch of cleaning laundry and cooking, like Mara :)

But I feel like I ate very well today, great home cooked food with lots of veggies yum!

Tomorrow is cardiokickboxing. I HAVE to make myself go lol or else I know I’ll start to feel really crummy.

I haven’t done yoga in a long time but I do try to do a couple poses here and there like a down dog and an up dog and modified bridge pose, etc for the simple sake of keeping my spine moving.

Hugs to everyone! Doing great!! Keep on keeping o!!

hello exercise buddies - glad to hear from everyone, this is one of my favorite threads! Anybody try the Galloway walk/run method? My spinal surgeon said I didn’t need a vertebraplasty or other surgical intervention and could resume exercise (but no weights). I tried a 45 second walk/15 second run pattern to start with but quickly tuckered out. I think I’m in the same exercise funk as some of the others here but I’m hoping to combat this terrible Xeloda fatigue.

Hope you get great scan results, DeAnn!

Thanks for the encouragement ladies. My body is officially falling apart despite my steps per day. LOL.

I’ve been having trouble with my right arm going numb, pins and needles so obviously have something pinched (MRI of brachial plexus came back normal - waiting on results of CT to the cervical spine). That’s why I turned to yoga. I thought it was getting better and now, lo and behold, I’ve messed up my left foot! I am having burning pain along the outside edge of the foot, making it difficult to walk at times. I think perhaps I did one too many downward dog.... seriously?

Getting old has its challenges for sure.
