That's really interesting moth, thanks for sharing! Its the same with the SIJ location too, years and years of tweaking that spot. Cripes no wonder I had no idea what was going on! :)

Had a productive day of walking today. I did 20 mins brisk walk on the treadmill. I also decided to get some winter walking shoes/boots as well. Walked to the bus stops, both times there was quite a wait for the buses so did extra 10 mins or so to the next stops and walked about 20 mins after finishing at the store to reach my bus stop home since I just missed a bus. Could not be bothered waiting so decided to be more active. At least an hour of walking was done.

Morh, interesting to know, that makes sense, my breast got hurt in an accident 2 years before diagnosis and having long-suffering of lower back problems where metastatic are located! God knows why!

Mara, excellent! I guess short walking with some breaks is more effective than one long course. Today I just managed to do some pt experiences no more energy for walking, near 3rd week of cycle. But let’s see..

Ibeatit, I really hurt my back last weekend when I did that 12km/8 mile walk. The walk to the restaurant was fine, the walk home was terrible. I have decided that I know I can walk far if I want, but perhaps is better if I take the bus home, walk 4 miles with the hills one way and just bus it home. The closest bus stop is still about 10 to 15 mins away but it is flat. That would be better than tweaking my back again. I think it will be nice tomorrow again so I may give it a try. Smaller walks throughout the day are just as beneficial, if not more so. Walking sticks may also come up for me. Good luck with your energy and good to get the pt done that you managed.

I did get nice walking shoes for winter. They are boots but are only the size of shoes. The bottom has antislip tread and vibram to make it more sure footed, they do have very nice insole and comfort as well and much less heavy. I still have boots for when it snows deeply as well. I am going to train in all my boots as time goes on but the smallest ones will be the most popular choice.

I took it slow for few days, just light pt exercise so I could store energy for 30 minutes walk yay! Despite it was a slow walking but I am glad I could make it. Now I understand how to tolerate with fatigue in week 3 of my medication cycle.

Mara I hope you feel comfortable with new boots. I am happy for you that some short distance walking work well for you.

Last year this time I was in bed rest condition, I am grateful I am on my feet today.

    Have a nice thanksgiving everyone!

Ibeat it, I am happy that you are on your feet too. I think that is wonderful and good news indeed. Slow walking is still walking.

My new boots are pretty good for not slipping in slushy snow. If I have to go out early, I will attach cleats to them too. The only thing I had a hard time with were my feet sliding backward, was harder work. I did half an hour. Today I did 90 mins of my cubii elliptical and that was it for today. FYI, I am not a fast walker, I consider myself steady, I am very conscious of lifting my feet so I don't trip on the gap between sidewalk pavers. Due to that, I take my time. If I want to go fast, I will do it on the treadmill.

Well, done walking today as far as I know, did almost 90 mins in 3 different walks. One earlier today, then decided to go to my burger joint for brunch so walked there and back. Had a lot more energy today. For me, I think being active initially before eating seems to help a lot. Might keep trying this. I am staying home now. Surveys, laundry and housework will be my afternoon and evening I think. I must say though, I am full of energy so if the mood strikes to walk again, I may just listen to it.

Hi Mara, how are you and walking?
I hurt my back badly, and I had to take it easy for several days, it happened around thanksgiving preparations I guess grocery and standing long time for making dinner were the cause, the pain was intolerable, so between dinner and desserts I had to disappear for a 10 minutes rest otherwise I couldn’t tolerate a second and I didn’t want to spoil family gathering. at first I worried if the pain related to tumors or progression but pain killers and hot packs helped to resolve it a bit so it was a relief! Now I got back to walking again and yesterday I managed to walk 30 minutes with a very small leg numbness which is good. A bit I worry about effects of pain killers and common cold ( got it from my niece) meds on my blood test I have Thursday. Sweet thing my nephew had corona test followed by 5 days isolation before coming from college and seeing me. By the way I changed my user name! I love this plant, snowdrop, it reminds me so much good memories. This time of year I review my good memories, I thought it was good to use one of those good memories here in this thread.

    Happy December everyone!

Snowdrop, glad to hear it is getting better for the walking for you. If you do ever find the back pain returns while walking, take smaller steps. That can ease the pressure on the back outdoors. I do that going up and down hills. That 30 minute walk sounds good for you as well.

I still walk regularly, I have exchanged long walks in favor of no more than 30 mins where possible, take the bus the rest of the way. I am confident I can still do the long walks but if the route is hilly, I take the bus to where it starts getting hilly and do the hills, then take the bus back and finish on a flatter route. Today, I have not been out in the snow we just had but I may try out a trip to the grocery store for some milk. We will see after lunch.

Todays walking so far is walking on the spot to a song I play on you tube. I walk quickly and swing arms and only walk for the song. I don't how many times I have done this, but it is definitely helping the energy up. Some days I just am not feeling the treadmill or elliptical but still want to move. The stepbench also helps me not trip over the slight rise in the floor between the living room and kitchen. I step up on my right leg all the time which has strengthened it and stopped some of the foot drag I had that made me trip when outdoor walking. If you cannot find anything else to do and are tired, I highly recommend walking on the spot to a song every once in a while. Even on a yoga mat if you have one.

Just checking in again! I am afraid my activity level is still really down since I am having these breathing issues. I have gone on walks, but they are very slow (for me... usually I am a very fast walker... ) and I have to stop to catch my breath after any sort of hill - even tiny ones. I have been trying to do my light weight lifting at home and I did buy one of those Suzanne Summers things that you crunch between your legs.... cannot even think of the name. Anyway, I am hoping it makes my thighs skinny, which is a long shot. That's really been it. Until my breathing becomes my normal I am afraid I am going to be like a turtle.

Glad to see everyone else is doing well. Snowdrop, sorry to hear about your back... back pain is absolutely 100% the worse thing! Glad it's better.

I'll keep checking in... hopefully I will be moving faster soon.

    XO

    Andi

Hi Andi, good to see, so sorry to hear about your breathing issues, certainly does make things harder in the exercise world for sure. I am glad to hear you are still able to walk. Any walking is good. Hoping your breathing returns to normal soon. The thighmaster sounds like a good exercise, I may actually look into one to help tone my thighs as well. I have gained some weight despite all my walks due to lack of good portion control.

My fitness is improving - I noticed on the FitBit that my resting heart rate has come down in the last four months from low 70s into mid 60s and the other morning i woke up at 59 beats per minute. Obviously its all indicative, but so long as its a trend Im all for it!

I also did a 10km cycle in under 25 minutes the other day, when in July when I first got the spin bike it was 35 minutes at least. I've finally got the set up dialed in so I can ride longer and more comfortably. Its done wonders for my sacrum and already-wrecked L5 and hip-flexors, which means I have almost no neuropathy in my large toe and I stand up straighter. And now when I hop on the bike I start at setting 4 or 5, rather than thinking those were 'tough' and starting at 0 or 1.

If only I could get in the pool...

I had a very early morning MRI scheduled and needed to be at the hospital by 800am (still quite dark here). I also did not sleep well because whenever I must be up early, my body will automatically have me sleeping lighter than usual and wake me up early. I literally dragged my butt when walking there, had to take off the traction cleats from my ankle boots when done icy walking on the side streets, very uncomfortable. I was fine once the cancer clinic access my port for the contrast and the MRI was just fine as well. Got deaccessed and the walk home was better. Wore sneakers which are most comfortable. Been snoozing on and off but that is OK.

Good job on the 10 km cycle in under 25 minutes, great improvement with the speed and strengthening of other muscles. Good for you.

I am also testing out being much more careful about portion control for myself as even though I walk a couple of hours most days, I am gaining weight. Still going to eat the beans, spinach, shred cheese, queso and high fiber seasoned wheat bran, am eating much smaller portions. Assuming the bean meals, I am eating 3 meals which are the size an old meal used to be altogether. . I never get tired of it and not much else I like to eat. I am also cutting WAY back on peanut butter consumption. I was eating BIG spoonfuls of it with my bran sticks as a snack, great for protein and fiber, bad for high calories. I am now measuring the snacks, a tablespoon a day and if having it for dessert, 1/2 teaspoon. Sounds draconian but I think it will help a lot. Not giving up anything I like because I would never stick to that. We will see how it goes anyway.

Mara, I am in light or bad sleeping over a night before infusion too! I try to get there early to avoid crowded waiting room. That makes me sleepy whole day after blood test and injections which I don't have any objection! Actually infusion day is my rest day , no activity day!

I had to take it easy on myself to give my back enough rest, because I did not want to end up in hospital and RT again. today I am going to start my walking, my goal is still 30 minutes but less than that is ok too! I am a good instructor:)))

Andi, I hear you, you have been active and because of back surgery you needed to take rest. But good thing is that you are back on saddle. Many of us experiencing breathing problems me included, I haven't tried uphill but upstairs definitely. I need to catch breath when I am in walking trail and talk to phone!!!
    sondra you go girl!

Edit to add: I reached my goal, 30 minutes today, it was a slow walking but I feel good.

I hope everyone is doing well and many share their daily activities to inspire each other.

Well, I have certainly put on weight even with the activity I was doing. Am going to keep eating beans and spinach, add a bit less cheese and less tortilla chips and queso. I am also going to walk two to three hours throughout the day on the treadmill. That does not include outdoor walking if I need to get something nor does it include elliptical.

I bought size 18 pants which really should have fit, I could not get them over my hips. I am going to stop this weight gain and hopefully go back to my normal weight. Keeping the pants as motivation to keep moving. Side benefit of the extra walking on the treadmill is I can stop every 10 to 20 mins and go back to it without losing the amount of time I walked. We will see what happens when I do this every day. I do eat a bit less in my meals but need to make sure my energy stays up. I can walk a bit faster on the treadmill though there is no incline on it and I have to hold on due to poor balance on it. We will see how it goes.

    Hi all,

Momchichi, I am glad to hear you are doing well, and have an activity plan for colder days.

Mara most extra weights are from medications we take.

I manage to walk a 30 minutes walking yesterday, 2 days in a row, I am happy of my progress. We went to stay-at-home order/ lock down for at least 3 weeks, as cases are surging and icu capacity fell lower than 15%, I wish people take the virus seriously, sigh. So I avoid walking outside, I'll do my pt exercise double and take stairs several times, daily. I do my part to save our community.

Edit to add: feeling good after work-out in lock down! That counts too!

    Stay safe everyone.

Snowdrop, glad to hear you got in another walk today. Sounds good. Be aware that lockdown does not mean you cannot walk outside for exercise. We walk outdoors here and just maintain 6 ft apart. So if you miss walking outdoors, consider walking outdoors if it is not too crowded. Lockdown where I am means closing indoor public spaces except essentials like groceries etc. If you don't want to go out, there is leslie sansone on youtube that does walking on the spot vids as well. Good luck where you are.

I went outside for a 30 minute walk today and not much else going on here. Our covid cases are going up but not superhuge here. Most people to follow masking and limiting gatherings. I stay in my older brother's family bubble since I live on my own. Otherwise, I mostly get what I need, not just shopping for fun.

Returning the jeggings I ordered that do not fit, will get plus size next time. That is what is needed for extra large hips and thighs. They would not have fit 20 to 25 lbs ago which was what I usually weighed.

I will get plenty of walking to and from the bus stop as well as from the bus stop to the store as well. Should be 45 mins or so. This week is supposed to be sunny so looking at modifying some of my LONG walks into more manageable ones. For the super hilly 12K I did, I am thinking to bus it to the hilly area, walk that part and then reverse that. Bus it to the flat part and get off early. I just don't big hills both ways but value the walking.

Hi everyone, I'm still walking. Almost always twice a day, each walk about 25-30 mins. My current dog is very 'sniffy' so we walk slower than I probably should/could. This route is only a bit over 1 km. Otoh, this lung met is causing me a bit of a cough. I get a bit out of breath on the hill but not sure whether it's deconditioning or the met.

I used to walk around 5k in 45-60 min. not sure I could do that now but I feel like I should be trying to turn up the pace a bit.

One thing I've noticed time & again - probably at least 1/2 the time, I don't feel like walking, I'm tired and don't want to do it but I feel so much better when I come home.

Moth, I am exactly the same. I had to return some pants so picked bus stops further away to also incorporate some walking. I was supossed to leave in the neighbourhood of 10am. I procrastinated until 2pm. I went and got some good walking in but I really fight with the urge just to sit on my butt. It isn't any easier for me even though I walk a lot, my body says nope but my mind says yes you need this, so that is what I do.

I am going for an evening walk to check out any christmas lights where I live to see what streets are decorated, not sure how far I am going but we will see. This one I actually feel like doing. It should be fun. Will wear my white vest so I am more visible to drivers.

today for some reasons I felt down, just push myself to get vertical and walk, it was slow walking around 30 minutes. I felt much better after walk, actually it helped to drain my mind of those things that I cannot change.

Moth good to hear from you and see you actively walk everyday.

Mara, my body and my mind also have some disagreements about my activities:))))

yes it is amazing how when we do not feel like doing something fitness related if we do it we feel better. Could not nature make it easier for us so that we want to do what is good for us ?!

There was a milestone for me yesterday - from about 2009 to about 2014 I used to aim for a weekly session of pole dancing. Amazing workout ( try sticking on the pole just by grabbing it with your hands or legs let alone moving positions let alone doing it gracefully !) , feeling of accomplishment , , getting over the pain, mood boost. Then I dropped it due to work and study commitments , money , other health issues distracting and upsetting me.

Yesterday I went for the pole dancing class with my daughter who is 16 now - I shared something I loved with her , she wanted to go , she enjoyed it , she is fit enough to try it, I actually survived till she could do it ( first diagnosis was in 2006 when she was 2 years old ..)

Crying now from being sentimental. Wishing you countless positive emotions from movement and fitness , in whatever shape and form !

Another one- I’ve heard good things about pole workouts. Glad your teen could join you! I had a friend not install hers correctly in basement & in her first attempt, she & pole went one direction & her wig went another.

Mae/ what a great accomplishment! Just walking in nature had to be a nice boost for you.

Glad everyone is finding ways to fit in movement into your days. I geocached after chemo with my mom & we walked a mile along a river trail hunting hidden treasure.

Hi everyone! Sorry I haven’t been on the forums much. Just too distracted with all the election stuff and whatnot. I have been staying active though and trying to get at least 45 minutes of walking each day. The last few days have been rough as I somehow sprained my ankle and it’s been swollen for the past few days. Hoping it clears up soon as I crave my walking time, mostly just to get out of the house for a little bit. So tired of not going anywhere!

Glad to see your updates and hoping you all are doing ok

Good to see you DG, hope you get to walk again soon.

Mae, glad to hear you got walking too. 2300 steps is in the neighbourhood of 20 mins so that is great.

I did a lot of walking today, my half hour this morning which was great. Bagel lunch with a friend and we went for a walk afterword. I really enjoyed the walking and talking. Saw the most steep uphill incline and challenged myself to try and get up it. I made it up halfway and had to give up after. She is able to do the hills and walk 15 to 20 km as she has walked across the city for years. That is what I aspire to. The afternoon walk was over an hour. Came home, ate an early supper and walked around my neighbourhood looking at the Christmas lights. So very pretty.
