how about drinking?

Glad to see a few drinkers back at the bar. Christine & Donna where the heck have you been. I know work - me to, at least for a couple more hours.
DH left Tuesday for Reno for another "conference" - don't you just love that word!! I'm flying out tomorrow morning to join him to celebrate my big "50" - yuk!! Just had to get out of town in case my kids decided they would try to pull a fast surprise party on me - would have really hated that. We are going to Lake Tahoe on Sat and of course do some gambling.
Junie - I have your cell number - if I win a big one I'll call ya.
Kathy - I also just love a good bloody mary in the mornings while gambling. Wish me luck!

I have never asked about drinking.... I know that I'm a big girl (50) and congratualtions Sam91 for your upcoming big 5-0, but with the medication I am taking I am worried about how much/little I have to drink. So far a limit of 2 has passed the test (I dont end up in ER), but any more and....
And since I dont drink much I dont know the names of any of the drinks (I dont like Margaritas) but what are some fruity ones I would like?

hey dreamwriter,
Welcome, Pull up a barstool and have a drink!! If you like sweet drinks maybe you would like my current favorite... a melonball! It's a shot of Vodka, a shot of Midori, and a shot of orange juice. I only use o.j. with NO PULP, because it tastes smoother without all that pulp. Of course, if you like pulp, go right ahead!
I also like Capt'n Morgan & diet Coke. I love the vanilla flavor!
Hi to everyone! I have been kind of busy for awhile...
I love the Fall weather, too!

Hi everyone! I just started "happy hour" and my DH is going to play racquetball, so instead of drinking alone, thought I'd see who is at the bar! Sam, I am glad you are joining your DH at his "conference"...LOL....nice they do pick good places to meet. You will have a ball! I love Lake Tahoe...at any time of year. Hope Harrah's will be loose....they used to have the best Prime Rib on their buffet there, but it has been 3 yrs I think since we have been there. Hope you win a bunch and have a great time!!! BTW, where are you in the reconstruction stage? I haven't been able to keep up....I just got my implants last Monday...yay! Oh, and HAPPY 5-0 to you!!!!
dreamwriter, I like soooo many drinks it was hard coming up with just a few! But usually I drink Seagrams/Diet Coke (w/ cherry is nice), also like Rum/Diet Coke w/ lime. But a good drink, albeit not very strong, is a "tootsie roll"....OJ and Kahlua....really tastes like one. Also, MaiTais are good, Daiquiris (Strawberry, etc). Mango Margaritas are great, vodka and either OJ or Guava Juice. Also, a "fuzzy navel" is good....OJ, vodka, and Peach Snapps I believe. The list is endless...let us know if none of these or none of Harley's suggestions appeal to you, and we will gladly come up with more!
Harley, nice seeing you! I haven't had a "melon ball" yet....but I love pulp, so my OJ has plenty of pulp...I guess when you buy the "no pulp", I get what they take out of yours in the "most pulp"..LOL. Isn't this weather great! We did some work in the yard this afternoon, and it was so cool and crisp. Planted pomegranate trees and guava trees, but they prob will not live here in N. AL...they say we may have a rough winter this year, as the past few yrs have been so mild, that tropicals have been surviving. I also have a "kahili" ginger about to bloom...only the 2nd time in 4 yrs, as we need enough time between frosts....hope it blooms before we leave next Saturday...I would hate to miss it...it looks like the kahilis that the Hawaiian royalty and chiefs used to carry. I took a pic the first time it bloomed, and it is soooo neat.
Well everyone, come on up to the bar and have a few! Hope everyone is doing fine. Jaybird, and junie, where are you?
Okole Hau,
Kathy

Hey drinkin' buds~
Haven't been drinkin as much as usual, which is a direct result of Weight Watchers and not a result of any personal decision to just cut back LOL!
Sam - HAPPY 5-0!!! WooHoo for you girlfriend! I will have a drink in your honor.....(or two or so)
Junie - Sisters and I are staying at the All Seasons B&B. We stayed there last year. Pat (who owns it) is awesome...I believe she is also a bc survivor. I still have your number so I'll give you a call and maybe you can meet us for a drink (or two or so).
Christine - good for you on working out 5 times a week! Is your PT still kickin' your butt LOL!The most difficult part of WW for me is defintely the wine (shocker, I know). But I'm down 9 lbs since I started 3 weeks ago. BUT - I was at my all-time high when I started. Yes, we need to chat.
Wahine - I also love all drinks and don't descriminate LOL! I also like Rum/Coke Zero/lime. Then again, what DON'T I like?
Going on a road trip next week. A friend in San Diego is experiencing first hand the current mortgage crisis and is losing her house and job next week. So I am flying to S.D. Tues, and on Thurs, she, her 2 cats and her bird and I are driving back this way. She's from Joplin, MO like me and is moving back to Jopin to a rental house sight unseen. Bless her heart. It should be an adventure.....the person who was originally going to help her drive back was in a car accident and can't make the trip now so I extended an offer to help her....that was BEFORE I found out there would be 2 cats and a bird traveling with us. Should be nice and cozy in the Toyota Corolla! Wish me luck!
Cheers,
Donna

hey, Sam--I keep checking my voice mail--you haven't called yet!!! Hope you're having a great time and happy birthday!!! We love Tahoe/Reno!!!
CG--what a good sport you are! Now we all know who to call when the job goes above and beyond the call of duty. Seriously, what a good friend you are to do this. It will be an adventure--bet you end up home with some great, funny stories about that drive! Looking forward to seeing you later this month--you can tell me all about it!!
We're leaving early a.m. for (my own little roadtriptohellandback) Dallas, for wedding, on to Carlsbad to visit Bob's mom who is elderly; not doing well; check out nursing homes; not looking forward to that. I'll miss our cyber bar for a few days, but am taking along a hefty supply of ML to keep me company!!! Everything's packed and ready to load; dog goes to "camp" first thing, then we're off. (Have to tell him he's going to camp--he doesn't like the vet word! Thank god, they love him where we board him!) Sooooo, kicking back for a few minutes......
Hugggsssss to all--one more round on me....

I am so happy... I found a home! I've been getting lip from some about still drinking. I needed to cut back before all of this started, and I have, so they all need to lay off. One of them is an aunt I'm very close to who puts away about 5 botlles of Turkey a week (that's when things are going good, if there's a bad day...). My mom, sister and I have all been bartenders, I live in Cajun Country, my husband shoots pool on a team once a week (he cut down when we got the dx). My sister owned a bar, I have two very close friends who own bars, and lots of bartender friends. All of this leads to a life of more drinking than normal. The onco told me I needed to quit smoking, I'm on Chantix for that and it's helping. I can't drink for at least a few days after chemo, but other than that, I don't see the issue other than society's normal attitude toward people who drink more than a glass of wine a day! None of the people giving me grief over it are fighting this or ever have, they are on the outside looking in. And the reality is that battles can be lost... whether I have a year or 50 years left... I'M GOING TO ENJOY EVERY MINUTE...CHEERS

Hi chelli, And a big WELCOME!!! You now have a nice place to come and drink, whether to drown your sorrows, or to celebrate the good things, or just to visit...everyone is welcome here! Yeah, with you and your family as former bartenders, I could see why it would be more normal to have more than just one drink a day....what is your favorite? I can only imagine how many neat drinks you could mix up for us here. You might end up being our "official" or "unofficial" bartender! I hope the Chantix will keep working and you can quit smoking, but having to stop drinking.....nah....thats unconstitutional, isn't it??? LOL! My dad has always had at "least" two drinks a day (I remember years when it was lots more!)...and he will be 92 soon, and is so much healthier than me. And my mom is 88 and has 2 drinks a day, and is healthy too. That was always my reasoning for why I should get to drink....however now they say women should just have no more than one....that sure isn't fair...Yes, enjoy every minute...we definately deserve to do that! No matter how many real or cyber drinks we want!!!
Okole Hau (Bottoms Up),
Kathy

Hey Drinkin' Buds!
I lurk more than post but just wanted to say "hey!"
My current fave is still the La Linda Malbec from Argentina (which I can get locally) but just this week I was in France and had a lovely Bordeaux that cost less than 4 Euros - drank an entire bottle myself one night (it took 6 hours!) - and brought a bottle home to give to my dad, who favors cheap CA cabs. Even if he doesn't like it I'm sure he'll drink it! I'm going back next week and will then bring some home for ME!
Maybe one day I'll have a BC wine par-tay at my house.....
Cheers!

Hey to all. I think I have finally recovered from my weekend. I don't usually do it up like that, but I accidentally had lots of fun, and too much to drink (yes there is such a thing). There was a big festival in Lafayette (that's what we Cajuns do best), and lots of music, dancing, and drinking. Then Sunday mom had the day off, so we got together to catch up on the last week and ended up at the Bike Barn (very cool biker bar here), I ended up with a new tattoo before the bar closed, I got the pink ribbon around my ankle, draping onto my foot. It's real cool, but I don't think I would have gone through with it now if it hadn't been for all those cold tequila shots and Coors Light. Anyway, think I'm gonna dry out for a few more days. I'm gonna behave this weekend, except for a mug or two Saturday evening, a bunch of girls from high school getting together at our old "pizza joint", and a friend's 40th b-day surprise party that night. Hope all are doing well! Cheers!0

Well, sounds like you are having way more fun than the rest of us on chemo! How do you do it girl?
0 -
When I found out that I had to have a biopsy it scared the hell out of me. I don't know what I would do without my best friend named Jim. Jim Beam that is. I smoke and I drink and i know neither had anything to do with what ever I have. So If the worst happens I DARE anyone to get onto me about it. It takes the edge off of the fear late at night. I go to Surgeon Monday and we go from there.0

Chelli
Welcome! You Do seem to be having TONS more fun than I had, when I was doing the chemo tx last year. Have a drink or two or three!!
Wahoo1,
Welcome! So sorry that you are joining us, but glad that you did. Wishing you good luck at your surgeon appt., yesterday. I hope it went well.
I think I need a drink. I've been job hunting, and it is NO FUN! There aren't too many jobs out there, with the economy like it is. Hope no one minds if I start Happy Hour early today.

Had tx #4 yesterday, I think that is my halfway point. Dr. still not sure how many, but probably 8. Not feeling too bad today, slept for about 12 hours last night, but I'm up and around and feeling ok today. My dog has to go for her mastectomy and get spayed tomorrow, so I have to get out of the house for a little bit tomorrow. I'm going to take it easy Friday too, my bff is coming in for a visit from New Orleans and I want to be able to spend time with her. DH company got huge contract and he is working 12 hrs, 6 days at least. He is exhausted when he gets home, so I'm not expecting any help with the housework this time around. I have family I can call if it gets too bad for me. I slept through most of my tx yesterday, when I woke up, I got up to go to restroom and caught the IV tube on the doorknob, pulled it out. Didn't really hurt to re-insert it though, she was able to get it back through same hole. They said I'm the first to ever do that, go figure. I have another PET CT in two weeks, hoping for the best. The muga came back at 71%, so that's great, only a 5% decrease in 3 months. I am not going to drink for the next few days, hopefully the SE will stay minimal. I did have too much partying going on for a few weeks, so I'm taking a break for a while. We are only gonna go out for his pool league on Tuesday nights, and have Sunday football parties. I wonder what's worse... beer and tequila, or hurricanes only??!! I'll be off for a few days, gonna stay in bed with a book!

(((Harley))) Good luck with the job hunt. Can't you just live on unemployement? (j/k!) Guess you'd have to give up drinking, huh? Or - just drink, and not eat!
(((Chelli))) Congrats on the half-way point in your chemo tx! I toast you tonight! I got lucky (?) and reacted negatively to my 2nd chemo, Taxol, and only did 2 of the prescribed 4. I'm so sorry about your dog - mine had mammary gland cancer during my dx and boy was THAT awful but she surved despite no chemo and is still alive over 3 1/2 years later - yea! (she's now 16 years old!)
So I previously wrote about the La Linda Malbec. Well, I've replaced that with a really nice French Bordeaux that I found in Lyon for less than $4 Euros (just over $5). I've been going there all this month and have brought a few bottles home (I would have bought a case if I'd had a way to haul it from the grocery store to the hotel) but won't be going back to France anytime soon so I'll just have to savor what I have and then find something else that's cheap.
I also brought back a red Beaujolais and a sweet rose dessert wine that I got when a bunch of us went on a wine tasting tour of the Beaujolais (duh!) region this week. I'm not a fan of that grape but it was fun and I'm glad I got what I got.
Sorry I've been MIA lately but France/work has been taking up a lot of my time! Next week I'm off to Italy but I'm not a fan of Italian wines so I won't be bringing any back even though I'm sure I'll partake of a Tuscan or two!
Cheers!

Hey Jaybird.. can you give me a good sweet red wine... not a desert wine. Since chemo.. my dry, not sweet wine is just gross. ( which saddens me..lol) The only ones I like now are Sweet Reds and I really cannot find many.
Laura

Hey Laura!
I used to work for Whole Foods and we carried a sweet red but the name escapes me right now but I can call my old store and inquire so stand-by, okay? Oh, I think it was German and the brand was Schlinkhause (sp?). I'm sure there are others - perhaps Google would help? You could also maybe try a blush wine - not exactly 'sweet', not a desset wine, but not dry like a red. Also, maybe plum wine? Or, how about port! There are some really good (and not-too-expensive) port wines out there. Granted, they're more for after dinner, but why not for pre- or after dinner if that's what your tastebuds are calling for? During chemo I craved all sorts of foods (and drinks) that I 'normally' wouldn't have consumed and all my favorites went by the wayside! HTH?
Cheers!
On chemo I couldn't tolerate 'sour' either and didn't drink any dry red wines. I'm making up for it now, though!

Ok.. TY... We do not have and whole food close around here... just makes me nuts.. if it were up to me.. I would only shop at those places...grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr..

hugggssss to all!!!
Jaybird--one of our bc sisters recently returned from a two-week trip to Italy...raving about a wine that she'd had there. It was a white wine, Mahragita (sp) something--thought she was talking about Tequilla!! I'll have to track her down and get the exact name of the wine--she found it here in the states at $20+ a bottle; it was really cheap in Italy. But, she swears I would love it it!
Sh*t--I love box wine!!!! Safe travels--give that little girl a big hug from her Aunt junie!!!!

Junie, that may be a pinot grigio. I'm SURE I'll drink some wine while I'm in Italy but I don't normally buy Italian wines but who knows, if the price is right I just bring some back!

OK, I'm a cheap wino! I have never had "expensive" wine or champagne in my life. I am very particular, I do not like the dry, sour wines at all. I had a hard time with Reisling, it was a little too bitter for me. The two that I like (DH likes too - and he's all for import beer and jagermeister) are Gallo Cafe Zin (sweet red Zin) and Muscata (white sweet, Sutter Home, Beringer makes also but I've never tried). Also White Merlot (Sutter Home) is a good one, not quite as sweet, but still very good. I get these at Walmart for about $10 a bottle. I told DH last night that with all of the extra Muscadines my grandparents have every year, I am going to learn to make my own! New "something to keep me busy", since I'm going half nuts not working! Wish me luck on making my own cheer-juice!

chelli--good luck in your wine-making business. That sounds like a lot of fun--good, productive fun with an end product you can use!!! Years ago, had a neighbor who made wine from grapes he gew in his back yard. It was pretty good stuff--realy knocked my socks off back then!
0 -
All of the homemade stuff is always the BEST! But I do know that I can't sell it, I can only give it away, or have a "wine tasting" party, or something along those lines!! Call me next year, we'll see if any has fermented well enough to pass the test!
If anyone wants to see pics of my fund-raiser, here are some pics (all pics are after 3pm, Monica had to be at her son's football game till then), here's the the link. http://bayoudemonml.smugmug.com/ Not quite sure how to get there, but it's under BayouDemons... Chelli's benefit, something like that! Enjoy!!

Neat, chelli! Especially the pics of the guy getting the cake in his face--priceless! Thanks for sharing the pictures. Would be neat if you get to make some wine. I like the sweeter wines also. My favorites are the "ice wines" that we have gotten in the Toronto area. Expensive, but you just drink a little....except years ago when we were in first class and they had ice wine on the flight...my DH and I must have had 2 bottles....much to the chagrin of the stewardess! Never seen it on a flight since. Since it was free....why not! But usually I just drink white zin and white grenache...and like junie, I even like them in boxes.
Jaybird, so neat that you get to travel so much for work. Although traveling isn't so great anymore, but your miles must be adding up! Enjoy hearing about all the wines you get to try.
Cheers,
Kathy

chelli--looked at your pics--what fun! If I'm ever able to get down your way I'm gonna call you and...let the good times roll!!! big hugggsssssss!!!
Wahine--LOL--remembering a flight we had to Europe first class--how can you NOT refuse a drink everytime someone stops by....lord, did not want that flight to ever end!!!! Assorted nuts served in porcelin bowls..filet mignon to die for...and drinks, drinks, drinks....LOL--Jaybird--run and hide if you ever get me and Wahine on the same flight with you!!!!

wahine - that was the cake I told you about. The owner of the bar started off the bidding and said if it raised at least $100, it was to be aimed at Jackie's face. It was auctioned off at $115 specifically to be smashed in Jackie's face. His wife donated a few hours of her band playing for the benefit, so they let her do the honors. And the cake was so beautiful, it was egg shaped, pineapple filling, with the pink ribbon and had "Breast Cancer Awareness" on it. My sis's mother-in-law did a wonderful job on all of the cakes. The whole day was awesome, but I was exhausted and ready to go home at about 5pm. I think the rest lasted until about 10 or 11! I love doing these fundraisers, they're always so much fun. My Bayoudemons family is the best! And there are actually lots of my family in there, my mom and stepdad, sister and brother, two aunts, an uncle, and lots of really good friends. Thanks for looking! Oh, and I've not heard of "ice wine". Is that something I might be able to find here? We have a really nice wine shop here that I could go to. I'm always up for trying new wines, as long as they are sweet.
0 -
chelli, If I am remembering correctly (and these days, that is a big IF...LOL), the ice wine is made from the last grapes left on the vine...after the 1st frost...hence it is very sweet. When we used to get it, we could get a good bottle for $35-60...but they are probably much more now. They sell small glasses for it, as you are just supposed to have a little bit at a time...like with dessert. If you get to a winery up in the Toronto area, or near Niagra Falls (and maybe other places too)....then you can try it for free. I am not sure if it is available everywhere, as not very much gets made each year. My ancesters are from Madeira Portugal (then came to Hawaii in 1800's), but I think Madeira wine is too sweet.....ice wine is much better. But we had some Madeira wine from a 100 yr old bottle when we saw some distant relatives there...just a tiny bit, but that was neat! We found some very sweet wine in Spain, but I can't remember the name of it...reminded me of ice wine too, and it was pretty cheap. I may actually still have a bottle; will have to look. Wonder if it would still be good?
So neat about all the fundraisers. And what a fun group of people...neat that your family was there too. But I would have rather eaten that cake (sounds yummy with pineapple) than had it thrown at someone!
0 -
Wahine - Never been to the Niagra Falls area, that gives me an incentive to go. I'm going to have to research the ice wine. Though I've never been known to drink a "small" glass. My wine glasses are actually iced tea glasses. When dr. said something about 2-3 glasses of wine, hubby said "Yeah, but you have to understand that is the whole bottle for her!" I'm a lush, oh well. I had a few drinks yesterday, but overall, have really put a cap on it. That was the first drink since last Sunday. My Wild Turkey aunt said, "well I guess you're not an alcoholic then, if you can go five days with no drinks and no withdrawls!" Whatever!!
You know, you're pretty close being in Alabama. Maybe we need to get a group of us from this region to get together??!! Find a central location that would be good for all of us to get to easily and have a fun weekend. I saw you posted about going to Pinkstock next year, I'm working on a plan for that with a friend who has an RV. But we can try for something in the south now that the weather is cooling off (YYYYAAAAAYYYY!!).

I am getting ready to start Chemo and was worried I wouldn't be able to enjoy my wine..... I guess it will just depend on how I feel?????? Mastectomies, expanders, chemo, herceptin, hair, side effects.............. how can I stay away from my wine????????
