I think typically people serve white, or blush, wine w/turkey but since I only drink red that's what I bring! I think you'll see both depending on what is preferred by those doing the drinking. HTH?

Oh, and if they go with a red there are sweet and semi-sweet reds and if a dry I wouldn't go too dry or too bold. Maybe a pinot noir? Last year was a bad year (IMO) for the Beaujolais Nouveau but that, too, is a suggestion. They are offered for sale now (?) or maybe the 20th? I don't remember the official start-to-sell date, sorry.

...knew I could count on you all for good advice--so, going with my gut instinct, recalling that it used to be white with turkey and fish; red with beef, etc...but current social thoughts are more relaxed........so, telling the wine-bringer to just bring a mix of reds and whites--we'll take a poll before dinner and everyone can have what they prefer!!!   Love it!!!!!   LOL--think that's why I like my ML so much--goes with everything!!!

    holiday hugggssss--junie

That's why I love my Tequila... just tastes good, no matter waht food is being served!  I would go with a blush/rose... just cause I like 'em better than white.  Cheers to all!!  Happy turkey day, I'm gonna be missing for a few more days, away with family and no puter.  Have a good one...

And a Happy Turkey Day to all here from the resident wino! I was supposed to fly on Thursday but I am now off - yea!!! I'll be sharing a bottle of wine with my family (maybe, I think, do they deserve it?) that I brought back from Lyon, France.

    Cheers!

Ladies, I haven't posted here before.... but I am one to enjoy my wine and beer more often than not.  My question is this:  I am going to talk to my onc about going on an anit-depr. med.  I really don't want another drug to take as I will also be starting tamoxifen after my rads are complete in a couple weeks.  What about drinking alcohol with anti-dep drugs?  I have googled it and can't seem to get any kind of definate answer except that you really shouldn't...or at least until you know how your body accepts this medication.  I do not want to give up a little drinking now and then.  Is anyone on the meds and had a problem?   Thanks for the listen...any advice?  HunkyD

    Hey Hunkydory,

With Taxotere I prefer a nice Maryland white.

With Xeloda I find that the Captain works well.

Aromatase inhibitors and antidepressants seem to taste well with almost anything from Kahlua and Milk to Yuengling lager.

Now with Doxil and Aredia I'm back to my white wine for now.

Whatever works for you. Just don't drive.

Stormy1, that was just the kind of answer I wanted to hear!  Not to worry, driving isn't my priority. Where the hell is a bald, eyebrowless, drunk woman going?>>>except to the fridge.

Hi hunkydory... Welcome!!  I'm on Celexa.  Wine, beer, tequila...(and I drink more than most people) no problems on with any of it.  The only days I absolutely don't drink are the day before tx, day of and 2 days after.  Other days I am just fine.  Hope you can be blessed to find a happy balance for yourself!!  Happy Thanksgiving to all.

    Hunky dory,

Hi and welcome to the bar!

I also take Tamoxifen, and have taken anti depressants, but have had no problems with drinking.  I have tried to cut back some, since those dang HOT FLASHES at night are just the pits, and I have found that if I have alcohol at night, it seems to set them off!

Hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving!!

    Harley

P S  Does anyone know if I should stop drinking for a couple of weeks, until my onc appt on Dec 12, when I get my bloodwork done??   I just wonder if it will affect the levels of my liver....  whatever they are testing me for (I know, I should find out EXACTLY WHAT they are testing, but I usually figure if they don't say anything, that means everything is good...  I don't want to start anything.)  Anyway, I just don't want to think that my drinking may affect the test results in a bad way.  Thanks in advance!

Thanks for all the quick responses. After my online research, now I am not so much concerned about drinking with Effexor but the side effects of going off or missing a dose.  I am going to talk to onc this wednesday about it.  I have hot flashes now after chemo and I know going on tamoxifen in two weeks is going to pump up the heat!!!  I sure just would like to feel good, but I guess we all would.  Harley, I dont know what they look for with the liver blood work.  I'm sure high levels of alcohol probably tax the liver and show up, but have no idea about what it all means.  Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.  I, am enjoying a Coors Light right now.  I don't really plan on changing my lifestyle at present.   Cheers...HunkyD

All I know about the liver bloodwork is that it shows the liver enzymes which when they are high indicate that the liver isn't functioning properly. The basic CBC's that I've gotten at the onc' are more concerned with the levels of the red and white blood cells which are indicative to the good dr.s of how the cancer war is going. Presently  my bones are positivly frail with bone mets and I have a liver tumor. The CA 127 is only in the 700's but the other bloodwork is right on the mark.

What still stymies me is that we have to be more concerned with the bone mets than the liver tumor because of structural integrity.

I'm having a glass of wine right now. Life is short. As long as we are not all staggering idiots...who cares. (If I lived in Europe I'd probably happily be drinking wine for breakfast. )

Glad to see y'all at the bar.

huggggssss to all!!!   Welcome, welcome to the new names!   Back from having Turkey Day out of town--one of the kids cooked this year and it was quite the gathering!   Not sure, though, that it was any less of a hassle for us than if they all made the trip to our house!    Going to a different kids' house out-of-town for Christmas--that will be interesting, too!   BUT, in the meantime, I'm home and glad of it and bellying up to the bar to drink the round that Stormy just bought!!!  Thanks, Stormy!!!!

So it's Saturday night, the roads are snow covered; there's no good reason to go anywhere... we better have another round.

hunkydory; that hair joke was just way to cool. I'm waiting for mine to start falling out right now. Woof.

Stormy1, so sorry to hear of the hair.  Very tough time indeed.  Without turning this into a hair thread....I just want to say that a few drinks and a pair of clippers really turned my inevitable hair loss into a "It's gone, deal with it" kind of night.  HunkyD would like to buy the next round for the thread.....cool huh!  Never bought a round for the thread.

HunkyD--you sound like me!  'cept I went after my hair with 4 bic disposable razors (didn't learn til later I should have used an elec shaver!)   One tip I'll share with you and Stormy (it was recommended to me by my primary care drs nurse....)   she had the dr fill out a request for a temporary handicap parking sticker.  Took it to vehicle registration and think it cost $1 good for 6 months.   That really came in handy when the chemo fatigue set in!   Just an idea you might think about.....

ok--next round is on me.   Can anyone explain to my hubby how I can get so trashed at a cyber bar!!??!!

    huggggssssss!!!!

Glad to read everyone on the drinking thread seems to being doing fine. That must be a sign, although it goes against most of what we read. Let's just say we are living proof and having fun!

Welcome to the newcomers, if you haven't heard this is ..."the funnest thread"

Junie- were you in StL or coming for Christmas? Let me know.

Oh and if anyone is having another turkey for Christmas, Pinot Noir goes perfectly, I guess because of the richness and sweetness of some of the sides, but it it great with just the bird also.

hunkyd- I take effexor it really does help with the flashes, although the red wine still brings them on strong. I have been on it for 2yrs already, a really low dose.

Hi to Donna, Harley and Sam, can you guys believe junie called us "oldbies?" Oh well, I know she calls 'em as she sees 'em.lol.

Gonna check out the circle thread, I have not been there in sooo long. I am wondering if there is a card excange this year. I have been thinking about some of the gals I had gotten so close to with the holidays here.

christineK, I have made a decision to call my onc tomorrow and ask for the effexor....he may say no or yes...don't know.  I am sick of crying jags...and hot flashes.  Really...what is there to lose.  I am not planning on changing my lifestyle...just increasing more "well being".  Thanks to all, I take a day at a time now...5 more radiation trts and then I guess I am on my own.  Red wine...I'm not giving her up!!!!  Later...HunkyD

ok  I'm back... I was trying to limit my alcohol consumption for a couple of weeks, since I'll be seeing my onc on Friday.  I must confess, though, that I have been having a couple of drinks a week, and last weekend, I went back to Maryland to visit my siblings, and I  had a Mojito at my sisters house Saturday night!!

I am not sure which levels are the most important, but the nurse told me last time that "if my numbers were good enough, my dr. would start me on ONCE a year check ups, instead of every SIX months!"  I am going to try for the ONCE a year plan!   My dh always says " I wasn't sick, til I went to the drs.!"  He's always trying to be funny!  but I figure, it's best to try to stay away from the drs. whenever I can.

Christine,  I can't believe that Junie called us OLDBIES!!   lol  This definitely IS the FUNNEST THREAD!!

I'll be going out to dinner with some friends Friday night, and you can bet I'll be having a drink or two... or three!!

It is good to be back!!!

They gave me my cocktail this afternoon. Doxil and Decadron. Best of luck to all you girls who are through tx that you never have to go back. My chemo brain is horrible tonight so I'll just say goodnight and dream some Parrothead dreams.
