goldie0827, we've had a great year for tomatoes, the best in a long time. We are still getting some but the vines and tomatoes look a bit tired now. They've worn themselves out! I'll miss the sweet cherry tomatoes - better than candy. DH made a huge pot of spaghetti sauce which we froze. He may make a batch of salsa for the fridge and we have to have at least one more BLT feast with tomato slices still warm from the hot sun.😋

I love my garden Muddling, I have done lots and still more to do. If you have enough maters to do some more freezing, if you don't can, I have a recipe for freezer salsa. As for me, so far I have done.....

6 qts of tomatoes with onions & green peppers.
    12 pints of just tomatoes.
8 half pints of just tomatoes.
    14 pints of salsa.
6 qts of sketti sauce, that I froze.
3 pans of lasagna with more home made sketti sauce, and froze those.

    Good Morning all!!

I have been soooo busy with appts I forget who I am and where I am going. I meet with my surgical team and do another chemo tx on the 31st. Surg a go on the 7th. Will spend at least 2 weeks with DD in LV, she will take me to my fill and f/up appts during that time.

Cleaning crew coming this morn, gotta straighten up a bit around here. Am missing all you wonderful ladies...been reading a little but will admit didn't read at all today.

Saying HI to the newbies and hope yoose tx's go smoothly!

goldie, I'm so impressed by your mater mastery! I don't can, although tomatoes would be the easiest, not requiring a pressure canner! Maybe DH will can a few pints. If you have time, please share the freezer salsa recipe next time you have your recipes out. We have had a good year for peppers too! I often just chop green peppers and wrap one pepper's worth in wax paper. If we have banana peppers I chop them and mix them with green peppers. When I have several packets, I put them in a freezer bag to use in meatloaf or chili beans all winter when they charge big bucks for green bell peppers in the store. We string our chili peppers and let them dry. They're too hot for me but DH loves them!

ChiTown ladies- on my way back from the reunion (total blast & then some) and sitting here in O'Hare before my next flight to Abq. It's hot here and dang if we did not have a hard landing (there was a moment I thought I might die....)

Well, Jazzy, glad your landing turned out OK. Yeah, it's hot & sticky here today--but also very windy. Makes the high pollen and ultra-high mold spore counts that much worse. I came home from OT ths afternoon to find two of my tomato plants knocked over, with little green tomatoes (not all of them the cherry variety) all over the deck. They're on my sill now, but I doubt they'll ripen. Squirrels took two more of my full-size ones, while still green.

OT was torture--and I have to do the exercises 2-3x/day. Ugh. Even after icing, I hurt like hell. Problem is that tendons have shortened & tightened and need to be stretched. I might have contributed to the problem by babying my wrist even before I broke the scaphoid--I practiced as little as possible so as not to cause more damage. But that's water under the bridge--even if I could have been limber right up until I fractured the scaphoid & had the surgery, the necessary post-fracture & post-op immobilization would have still shortened my tendons. I'm supposed to practice guitar up to 1/2 hr/day to the point of agony, warming beforehand & icing after. OWW. I will be stiff & sore for at least 4-6 months, perhaps a year, but have to push through it as best I can. Use it or lose it.

My root canals were >$1200 per tooth.

Good Morning, Loungettes! Happy Twofer Tuesday! Big day for the new office, everything is moving to a new, bigger location. Office moves are such exciting and fun times! Controlled chaos that easily descends into just chaos. But it will be over with soon, and should be very nice with all new office furniture and more space. And of course there is a mandatory education session scheduled for today, so that has to be set up and run in the morning and afternoon as well. Nothing like adding to the chaos! Sadie says Hi to everyone!

Goldie--No beans? I wonder why. Hopefully you'll get enough for seeds for next year. The little maters must be a lot of work for not much tomato, hmm?$1K per TOOTH?????? Yikes!!!

    Muddling--Oooh, BLT with T still sun warm!Heaven!

Goldie--that is one nice store to have for winter!

Mema--things seem to be moving right along!

Muddling--great idea for freezing green (and other color) peppers!

Jazzy--so glad the reunion was fun, YIKES on the hard landing!

Chi--Glad to hear you are good to go for exercises and on the way to full mobility and use again. Sorry to hear how much it's going to hurt. Practice to the point of agony sounds harsh, but the therapist should know what he/she is about. Still, OUCH.

    Countess Bunty Rothschild's DOTD:

    Pain, Pain, Go Away

    Ingredients

Pour tabasco sauce into a large container, add whiskey, cream, and mix well. Pour into appropriate glasses, drink and chase with ginger ale and lemon peel. (Drink the mixture, take a swig of ginger ale, and bite the lemon peel.)

Best served in a Margarita Glass.

Good morning friends- made it home last night without incident. Trip out of ORD was easier than the trip in! I have a work opp call at noon and it helped me to get ready. Got to bed a bit before midnight. Such a great time and whirlwind of visits!

ChiSandy- congrats on getting the cast off and know PT will get you back to where you need to be!

Mema- sounds like everything coming together for your surgery coming up, and will be in your pocket Heart

    More to follow!

To my chagrin, I discovered last night that despite carefully humidifying them in their cases over the winter, there is something wrong with my best guitars--either open string rattles (like a goose farting) or string buzzes (like a sitar) at various frets. Four are playable (though not my faves for performance) and one, despite its string rattle when tuning it up and fingerpicking it, sounds passable when strummed with a flatpick. Part of the buzzing when fretted could be due to a lack of finger strength--as well as having let my L hand nails grow out a little over the several weeks I had no reason (nor ability) to play. Tomorrow is my mani-pedi: the tech won't be happy about trimming the L hand nails back to the quick again, and I hope the solid color gel polish on my R hand nails will hold up to playing again.

PT hand exercises are really painful, especially after playing. (I do some of them while waiting in my car at red lights--flapping my hand over the edge of the steering wheel, for instance).

Root canal ended today. Endodontist says she got all the junk cleaned out of the canals, but is concerned there might be a defect on the surface of the root itself, and that we're going to have to keep an eye on it, perhaps have the periodontist take another look at it. Dentist/hygienist appt. next week--she'll talk to my dentist before that to figure out the game plan. Most likely tooth-colored acrylic restorations (fillings) rather than crowns or veneers.

Not sure what I'm gonna drink tonight. Right now, enjoying hot coffee now that the novocaine wore off. Had a dbl. espresso at Starbucks across from the endo's office because I didn't have time to have coffee before leaving home. Asked for & got a cup of water to drink and swish in my mouth so as not to subject my endo to coffee-breath. I got a very dirty look when I took a straw to put through the lid (so I wouldn't dribble when hydrating with a numb mouth afterward). Hey, never said I wouldn't reuse it when I got home.

UPDATE: So I drove to the guitar shop and the luthier was as puzzled as I am by the open-string rattle in my Martin M-36. He ruled out loose washers in the tuner bushings, loosely-mounted pickup, string defect (or loose winding causing the ball-end to clatter), too high or low nut slot, etc. Then he said, "What about that?" pointing to my tiny clip-on soundhole-mounted digital tuner. I'd tried to remove it once to change the battery but had no luck, so I figured it was too tight to have been the culprit. But this time, it slipped right off--and no more string rattle. I think the mounting clip/mic sensor had gotten a bit sprung, so I will move it back up and see if it'll hold without making its presence audibly known. If not, oh, well--back to peghead-mounted tuners. (In the old days I used an A tuning fork and then my ears...when my ears were young)!

Muddling, it's not "my" recipe, but here is the link. I put mine in freezer bags, not jars. I also freeze my peppers if I am not using them, and you are right, they are great to use in other recipes, same with onions. https://www.geniuskitchen.com/recipe/diners-freezer-salsa-12275

Lil Doity Butt, thank you for the birthday wishes. Thinking of you always and especially when surgery times comes. You have been a true fighter girl and have gone through sooooooo much. You are having reconstruction too? Be safe, and don't over do afterwards. I'm sure your DD will take very good care of you. How is Jen doing?

Beth, sounds like you had a most wonderful time, even better than expected?

NM, in researching, the soil we could have had too much nitrogen for the beans, I guess maybe we should invest in some kind of soil tester, and Yes, those little maters are almost not worth it, but I do them too. The new office will be nice, great time for you to join them!

Sandy, trying to imagine what a goose fart might sound like, but I will say, I like to drink duck farts! I think I would be more worried about cutting nails to the quick as opposed to the tech.

Canning salsa today, and bought some stuff to make some home made ice cream, and will do zucchini salsa tomorrow. Then this weekend, cleaning the pelet stove, to have it ready for winter. Ooooooh, I hate even typing that word!

Went to Flagstaff yesterday, 2.5 hours away. Sam's Club, birthday lunch at Red Lobster, got 6 jumbo shrimps in a shrimp cocktail as a birthday reward, and then Wal Mart. While at Wal Mart an older gentleman sort of followed me to where my husband was and kindly says to my DH, your a really nice guy, you come out shopping and bring your daughter with you! Of course he was kidding, but then mentioned that he liked commenting on the girls, said it was fun for him.

Sharing a couple stories of some peoople I ran into on our way home from Ohio. Staying in hotel the night before we leave, long story short, gal that worked there had son with cancer, he was born with it, Harry something. His eyebrows went all the way across his forehead at birth. Many surgeries, skin grafting on skull, metal plates in skull to help keep the cancer from spreading. He is almost done with chemo, 15 years old. We shared some hugs and tears and bonded. I think it helped her to talk about it. Then on the plane, young couple in front of us. He had a t shirt on that said "no one fights alone". When we landed, I tapped him on the shoulder, and asked who he was fighting with, he touched his wife, and said "my wife, she has stage Iv stomach cancer". She looked at me with tears in her eyes, I told her to keep fighting and that I was stage IV for 4 years.

goldie, happy birthday 🎂! Also thank you for the link to the salsa recipe. We've grown tomatoes, garlic, and peppers so we wouldn't have to buy much. Cilantro isn't my favorite thing but necessary in salsa. I might use half? It's really prominent to me. Hate it when the salsa at the restaurant has too much cilantro ☺

Muddling, I don't mind cilantro at all. I know some people use parsley in replace of it. So if you can tolerate parsley, maybe half cilantro and half parsley? Thank you for the birthday wishes, big year......60! How the hail did that happen???

Goldie- thanks for all your nice comments on my pics on FB. Yes, the trip was better than expected. Great weather, lots of great visits with family & friends, tons of good food, and the reunion stuff went really well. I was not sure about how any of that would go, so I went in thinking if I went to stuff and it was not fun, I would leave early. I stayed to the end both evenings!

I love the story you shared about having a common conversation about cancer with that woman. That is a lot for a 15 year old to go through. There was a fellow from high school who kept saying he was really looking forward to seeing me and learned when we talked he has Stage IV prostate cancer and it sounds aggressive. Although I don't usually talk about my cancer (and certainly did not want it to be a subject at this reunion), I did share I had been through bc cancer with him, and understood the whole ugly ride. My BFF who lives there also finished treatment in February and was going through her first follow up the day I left and was very scared so we talked about that too. Let's face it, no one understand cancer stuff better than a cancer survivor. I am glad you could be there for that woman.

My interview went well yesterday and was told I was a top candidate. One more on Friday and then will see where we land with this one!

Happy birthday, Lori--you young whippersnapper, you!

Beth (Jazzy) glad that you had such a great time at the reunion (and could lend a receptive ear and support to a fellow alum going through his own cancer journey).

The tomato plants survived last night's storm!

First mani-pedi since the cast came off--purple toenails, baby pink on the fingers due to needing my L nails short (too bright or dark looks awkward on short nails). Not quite all the way to the quick--but need to be able to fret cleanly (fingertips perpendicular to fretboard), not just to be able to fully form long-stretch chords but also to build my calluses back up. Only 2 weeks till the next gig!

Apparently I wrote a post yesterday but didn't actually post it, so here is yesterday's:

Good Morning, Loungettes!Happy Hump Day! We're back in the middle of another hazy, hot and humid stretch, with heat advisories and air quality advisories already up for today. So glad to have AC in the house and the car. Shortly after we went to bed last night the power went out, fortunately it came back on before it got too hot and stuffy in the bedroom. The office move is being as chaotic as I expected. Lots of little things needing to be adjusted or fixed. There's even a gym in the building that we can use! Small, pretty crowded, but has nice equipment, weight and cardio, with nice individual shower/dressing rooms. It's going to be a great resource for getting steps in during work days. One drawback is that the bathrooms are way in the back of the building. Another good way to get steps in! Sadie says Hi!

Jazzy--Glad you are home safe and had a great time.

Chi--so sorry to hear the guitars may not have stored well. I hope it's just finger strength that can be worked on. I have this mental picture of you sitting at a red light with your hands on the wheel flapping up and down! Glad the gunk is out of the tooth roots. That had to be painful. Oh, wow, you found the cause of the rattle! I hope it can be remounted for your convenience.

Good Morning, again, Loungettes!Happy Thirsty Thursday. Should be only a half day of work today, I hope it works out that way since I have 30 hours already for this week. I am so looking forward to the long weekend. Sadie will be happy to have mehome, too, she likes being inside with the AC better than being outside without it, even though she has several areas she's got marked out that are in the shade and cooler than in the house to hang out in. She has free access to the house when I'm gone, too, but I seem to find her outside when I get home more often than not.I woke up with a headache this morning, and didn't sleep super well last night. Will be glad when today is over and I can veg for a while. It's been a chaotic week at work.

Goldie--that recipe looks great! One of my patients daughters were canning a batch of salsa and chili and gave me a bowlful in a tupper ware container to bring home for my dinner last night, it was great! It's amazing the complexity of the soil components and the effect on garden production. I bet you enjoy those little maters greatly during the winter months, so that would make it worth while! Oh my, the people you have met have such touching stories! I bet you were a great comfort and some inspiration to all of them. And Happy Belated Birthday!

Jazzy--congrats on being a top candidate! Here's to more good news coming!

Chi--I remember getting a mani-pedi on the Disney Cruise a few years ago, it was my first time. I really enjoyed it, need to find someplace where I can get another to treat myself. Will it take you long to rebuild the callouses you need? Will you have time by the next gig?

OMG I'm so behind, I've been here at least 3 times and had to leave then didn't get back. Humph.

SusyQ so glad everything is on track, please keep us posted with everything u can. <<<PRAYERS>>>

Lori I don't member if I wished u a HAPPY BIRTHDAY , I'm sorry if I missed it, but 60, when did that happen??? U were just in ur mid 50"s not very long ago, Really...Well the people u met were very lucky they met u to have a talk with, it must have been very draining for you too. My gosh u've done a ,lot with ur maters, seems like no time at all. And we all know winter u will be thankful u did all of this. The only thing I've ever done was fry peppers and maters and freeze in bags for the winter, or just peppers <usually bell> And have done Melrose peppers which are so yummy. Off course we put peppers on every sandwich u can imagine, OK not PBAND J, that's about the only one I think.

Kim u've got a lot of hours so far, u'd better watch them or u'll be back to leaving Sadie to long. But it does sound exciting with everything being so new.

Jazzy ur home!!! And all is good, right. What a fun time u must have had and super good luck with the new project u talked about, I think u said Friday u should know something. Now we all wait.

Muddling u sound good, hope ur doing OK. Oh I can't stand the taste of cilantro not even a little, it ruins so many things that I otherwise like. At least u can tolerate some, cuz so many things now seem to call for it, I don't even mutter it's name.

Sandy I never knew u had to store guitars. And u have a lot. It doesn;t seem like u'll be able to play much tho. I'm sorry I didn't realize there was so much PT after this operation. Whew what a mess for u. And over 1,000.00 per tooth, geez that's recockulous after u get those little nerves out, there's not a lot to do but clear it out, oh yea then put in a new something for a tooth. I do hope the healing goes better than expected.

    Hey Janky.

Leslie's having a hard time with all this chit. She's still going everyday, including weekends, for the infusion, she can't even go swimming. And she's gained so much weight and they told her what she's taking is likely the cause and she's ready to stop everything. IDK what to even tell her about all this. My cousin finished her rads yesterday but no tests til another month, cuz they said it will still be working for that amount of time so she'll no nothing for a while, she's also very upset.

I'm going to try to put a pic. in so if it says cancelled means it didn't take.

    LUBS U ALL.

This was my hair in high school, that's why when I had a ponytail kit stuck straight out, Italian hair can be like this, well in my family anyway. Now my hair is straight and I dont care but in HS I did care. LOL Now it's the style.

That hair reminds me of Roseanne Rosannadanna (it's always something).

Yup--guitars (at least wooden ones, especially solid and not plywood) are finicky things--they're sort of "alive." (Furniture, too). Wood, especially wood that thin, is very sensitive to temp. and humidity. Guitars like to be at between 45-60% humidity and temp. in the 60s-70s.

Too dry, and a guitar can warp and even crack; too wet and it sounds dull & muted; and organic glue joints can even come apart. Cheap guitars, being plywood (or plastic or particle board) are more forgiving--the plies or oriented strands reinforce each other. (Of course, they play poorly and sound like crap anyway). A new trend has been making guitars entirely out of carbon fiber--not cheap, but not as costly as the finest solid wood ones either. They tend to have a bright-to-neutral sound (which most players can alter electronically) but are impervious to weather. (The most famous brand is even called RainSong and depending on the degree of bells & whistles can run upwards of $3 or even $4K. No, I don't own one).

So in the winter--when cold weather & indoor heating makes the air very dry, guitars when not being played need to be in hard shell cases, with humidifying devices (variations on a damp sponge in a pierced soap dish or baggie) in the soundhole and the case. (Also, in summer if A/C dries out the indoor air). In summer, though, the air is usually too humid, so best to keep the guitars in their cases with a dry sponge (or those little drying packets from pill bottles or shoeboxes) in a baggie to absorb excess moisture. At least I don't have to feed them or clean up their poop...

Calluses usually take me a week of daily playing to build up--but gradually. Too much in one day (with soft fingertips) can cause blisters. Some players put clear nail polish or superglue on their fingertips as a protectant, but (bad pun alert) you still have to "face the music." One time, my singing partner & I had 5-day residency for the Coffeyville (KS) Humanities Project. It pays decently (if you can economize on food & lodging), but it's really rough on hands and pipes that aren't ready: 17 hourlong sets at senior centers, nursing homes, food pantry & schools in 5 days, sometimes 5 per day. By the end of day 3 I had a set of nasty blisters (the adrenaline of performing helps with the pain, but only while performing. Practicing hurt like hell). I thought I'd try some of that NuSkin "liquid bandage" stuff I saw on TV. Applied it, then went out for a steak dinner. Woke up the next morning with black fingertips! (I think I scared some of the seniors). Tried alcohol, scrubbing, nail polish remover--nothing worked. After we finished up, I found the town pharmacy, and the druggist asked me what I'd eaten lately. Taken aback momentarily, I replied "Steak, potatoes and...Brussels sprouts." AHA: the sulfur in the cruciferous veggies reacted with the chemical in the NuSkin and turned it black! Took xylene (the stuff I used to clean Sharpie off petri dishes & beakers when I was a genetics lab tech back in the day) to do the job. The pharmacist was still laughing after we left.

Changing strings yesterday was a challenge--my therapist said not to use a string winder (power or crank) because the motion of my fingers & wrist twisting the tuners manually is good range-of-motion exercise. I needed an ice pack and a slather of CBD balm afterward. I will muddle through as best I can. I can play dulcimer okay, and can simplify my guitar parts in our arrangements.

Sandy I know there are instruments that can cost a fortune, but never thinking of the care of one. And certainly never knew how much care for a guitar. Well the only thing I've ever been interested in was a piano and tuning was about all that was ever done, that I remember anyway. And as far as black fingers u could have just said u were arrested, no one would ask many more things after that.

Ok u silly gooses, the hair wouldn't look so lovely in HS when the style was all straight or nicely curled hair and yes Sandy when it got longer it was just like the SNL character that's when a ponytail came in and made that whole look worse. Since I lost my hair tho it's much thinner and straight and I still don't know what to do with it, but like I said I gave up caring.

Thank you all for the birthday wishes.

Muddling, I love it when I can say that everything in my jars are from the garden. 100% organic.

Jazzy, good luck on your job ops. Is it tuff always having to look for those ops? And WOW, that accident on I40, how horrible. And you that right about survivors understanding cancer.

Janky, so true about loving birthdays now. I suppose not having them is not a good thang!

Sandy, glad your maters survived, that is about the only thing that has thrived in my garden this year. My nails are a mess from these FU pills. Never had a mani, I always did my own and my nails used to grow, not anymore, breaking, cracking, peeling, splitting and thin now.

NM, you have had some strange weather out your way. Do you leave the AC on for Sadie? So, did you get salsa or chili? I've never canned chili, but do use my canned tomatoes when I make some. The tomatoes won't last through winter, unfortunately!

Cami, I agree with you, how the heck did I become to be 60...lol. My mom and I have had some good laughs over that and it's good to hear her laugh. Never heard of Melrose peppers, will have to look them up. Ok, I see they are a sweet pepper and quite popular with Italians and Chigago! I'm so sorry that Leslie is having such a hard go with this damn disease. What kind of infusion is she going for every day. How is Joey doing with HS?

Sandy, who would have thought the brussle sprouts and liquid bandage would do that!

Well, I got 6 more pints of salsa and 5 pints plain tomatoes. Grated my zucchinni and onions last night, you have to put salt on them and refridgerate over night to draw out the water. So making the relish today, just making half pints of this.

Cami, I like cilantro BUT only in tiny amounts. I think I'm very sensitive to it. I like to watch cooking show and they grab a huge handful for their recipe and I'm saying "on no! Take one sprig not all that!" LOL. I'm new here and hope you won't mind a question: who is Leslie? Sorry she's having such a bad time.

ChiSandy, my DH has two guitars and inherited his dad's very nice Gibson. I understand they need certain conditions but have to admit I sometimes begrudge the house room they take. It would be different if he played them but he doesn't. So we have the big ol' cases in our room. I know we can't toss them in the attic or basement though.
