how about drinking?

Good Morning, Loungettes!Happy Hump Day!Getting up to another very chilly start to the day. The wind yesterday was just bitter, glad today won't be as windy. Lots of rain predicted for Friday, 1 to 3 inches possible, crazy for this time of year. Going to make a right mess of the snow we have.Glad I don't have to go anywhere this weekend! Work is asking me to work more days this week and next week, so far I've managed to stay strong and say "no".Well, "no, thank you." I was brought up to be polite, even when declining a request! Silly Sadie is quite happy this ayem, I left the bedroom door open so she's remade the bed to her liking and is snoozing while I get myself up and going for the day. Lucky doggy!
Goldie--Oh my goodness, what a pretty 5 Golden Rings drink! And the Smoking Bishop sounds so yummy, but what a lot of work! Glad we've got the Tenders to do the hard work for us! I know I can still post a DOTD, but I'm having so much fun seeing yours that I don't think of it! I am careful on the roads this time of year. Don't blame you for taking a break from the bc testing and such. Skipping one round of blood work isn't going to make or break your treatment plans, and doing the scans in the new year, starting a new deductible only makes sense when the timing is this close.
Jazzy--Well, at least the bones aren't getting worse. Maybe with some more time off the AIthe osteopenia will reverse.
Wigging--nothing wrong with complicated drinks, the Tenders LOVE the challenge! I've heard the weather is very different in the Carolinas area than in Maine, if it gets much colder I may have to plan a trip south to warm up!
Lomlin--I like to make mulled wine in my little crock pot. I put in cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, nutmeg, ginger slices if I have fresh root, ground if not, cardamon pods or ground, allspice, coriander, honey, and then slices of any fruit I have in the house--apples, oranges, lemons, limes, grapes, even bananas. Fill up the crock pot with wine (I use my small one, holds about 1 quart) andput it on "keep warm" stirring once in a while to dissolve the honey. It makes the house smell wonderful all day. In the afternoon when I'm ready to drink it I sometimes add a little brandy or rum (spiced rum is great!) either to the pot or to the cup. Or a bit of citrus flavored vodka, or a bit of Dr McGillicuddy's Raw Vanilla or Cherry liquour. I ladle it through a strainer if I'm serving others.
Goldie--wow, it really has been pretty much 10 years since we met on the boards, isn't it? Hard to think of that time of my life as being a decade ago now.
0 -
NM, yes a decade! I only wish it wasn't just here on the boards. Would love to meet you in person, but we are on opposite sides of the country! I miss so many of the gals that used to post here. Good to hear you say NO for additional work. (patting you on the back). Wow, you go through a little trouble to make that mulled wine, but I do bet the house smells wonderful. Do you drink it warm?
Wiggy, where in SC are you? You have nice weather there?
OK 6 Geese a Laying
Reading a little further on their site, one bottle $12.99 for 25 oz.
The 2013 release, 6 Geese-A-Laying, is a Belgian-Style Dark Ale brewed with cape gooseberries. If you're like me, you have to look gooseberries up. Allow me to save you some time: gooseberries are a species of Ribes, a flowering plant that produces edible berries, including currants. Native to Europe and parts of Africa and Asia, the fruit is most often used in desserts. Early pickings are tart and most appropriate for culinary use; they are also used to flavor sodas, milk, water, and in this case, beer. 6 Geese-A-Laying comes in at 11.5% ABV (alcohol by volume), making it built for aging. This series of beers is based on the festive Twelve Days of Christmas, and the beers are named based off the gifts given by "my true love," as mentioned in the song.

Goldie/NativeMaine: I’m in Charleston SC and yes! Today’s high is 62. We have mild winters with highs in the 50-60’s in Dec-Feb. By March we are headed back to the 70s. Oct/Nov can be 60 or 85! Don’t ask me about the summers though...but we do have an ocean!
Come on down and we will mix us up some cocktails!

Good morning ladies, I cannot believe how quickly time flies by and I am not sure what I have been doing (doesn't seem like much of anything as I look around my house). Welcome to any newbies - Wigging, LomLin and ? Wishing we did not meet this way, but so glad for the support from this most wonderful bunch of people!!
Though frosty and cool here in Alberta, the sun has been shining and that makes the days seem brighter and better somehow. I am looking forward to the upcoming festivities, quiet times with family and dear friends. On Monday I become an 'official' senior citizen and I keep thinking 'sixty five and still alive"! I hope to recite this for many, many more birthdays
Hmmmmph! Apparently I held onto a key and disabled my keyboard before I was ready to finish my post
I am looking forward to the warmth of Georgia and Florida end of February -- till end of March, yayyyy!
Wishing you all a very festive, happy, healing season of joy and peace. Cheers! janky

Good evening! I am so ready for the work week to be over. One more big meeting tomorrow and then on the down slope to the weekend.
I work with a great group of young techie guys on one of my projects and brought them all in little gift bags today with some Starbucks Xmas blend, some chocolate and home made cookies. They were all smiling and so happy! The have a whole lot of management types in the company and then all these hourly folks who I don't think get treated all that well. They have constant turnover, surprise surprise. I really love this team of young men and like mentoring them too. One guy is getting his BS degree and actually interviewed me for a paper for one of his classes. There are things about this work that make me nuts, but this part to me is the best.
Wiggning- the dexa scan is not a scan for cancer but for bone health/strength. The aromatase inhibitors can erode your bone health and had some deterioration so my MO has had me doing Prolia shots to help with bone building.
Goldie- I have read here that women became osteopenic on the AI drugs had their bones go back to normal after they came off. How long that took or whether they were in good bone health before (vs. slightly osteopenic like me at the start) is really the question. I think it can get better, I just don't know if it will?

Hi everyone, big drinking plans ahead for me. Heading to New Orleans Sunday with DH for our 18th wedding anniversary (Xmas eve) and to celebrate last weeks good brain and body scans. I’ve never been to NOLA, so I’ll be seeking out the must have food and drinks.
Hope your holidays are filled with good times 😀

Wiggy, we've been having a pretty mild winter as well, been in the 40's - 50's. Cold at night. But I think our coldest days are yet to come, where it can get below the donut (as NM says), but that's just at night.
Janky, it's almost always sunny here in AZ, and that certainly makes a difference! I hope I can live long enough, and even longer, to be able to say 65 and alive, I got 5 more years to go. When are you heading to Georgia and Florida? Not sure I'll be posting come Monday, as we are leaving tomorrow, so I wish you a hap hap happy birthday now!
Hi Chrissy, wishing you all the same girl. I guess there are probably lots that just read and don't post. I know there are other threads that I read, but don't post.
Hi Karen, good to see you too!
Jazzy, sorry it's been a tough week for you, but glad that you like working with all those guys! And nice that the one interviewed you. I'm sure you are great mentor! I haven't had a dexa scan in a long time, was showing some deterioration at the time, but no idea where it is now.
Ill, that is awesome news and great reason to celebrate. Congrats on the scans and your anneversary. I'm hoping for good scans, but skeptical that that isn't going to happen.
OMG, my mom had a horrible day yesterday, had to talk to her 5 times! Rambling on about the kids need to be fed.
Me: What kids?
Her: Jerry's kids.
Me: Who is Jerry?
Her: Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, but Dean isn't here and Jerry's wife is outside waiting in the car.
Then later she says one of the aides name and says she's sitting on her dinner plate.
Me: Are your eyes open or closed?
Her: Closed
Me: Open them
She opens her eyes and says she's gone now.Oh my, my poor mom, I don't know why God won't take her.

Goldie- I am sorry about your mom's confusion. Both my parents had dementia that played out differently through their end of time on this earth, but my mother would talk about people who were long gone but clearly very present in her world. She was not suffering as much as my dad did with loosing his ability to focus his eyes to look at anyone or speak. But he could still hear us. It is a terrible suffering and awful for adult children to watch.
Usually it is not the dementia that takes them but something else (pneumonia for my dad, another stroke and coma for my mom). I pray for an easy transition for your mom, but this is some of the hardest stuff to deal with in life (beyond cancer, which is no freaking fun either....)
Hugs sister

Good Morning, Loungettes! Happy Thirsty Thursday! Sunny so far today, not as cold, not as much wind, much nicer outside than a couple of days ago. The snowpack is starting to melt, making it mushy and slushy underfoot, poor Sadie came in from her morning constitutional with an ice ball in one paw that I had to take out for her! Those things must be ouchy, given the way she was limping. Didn't take her long to recover once it was out, though. She was playing tug within minutes. Gotta love playing tug with slimy doggie toys!
Goldie--Yeah, we are a ways apart, aren't we? How far are you from Las Vegas? I have a cousin there that I visit from time to time, maybe next time I'm out that way we can meet up? That would depend on where you live in AZ, though, I suspect. Yes, I do drink the mulled wine warm. I love it warm. That 6 Geese a Laying Ale looks interesting. Not being much of a beer or ale drinker I'm going to include a mixed drink for the 6 Geese day, too, just for fun.
alt="">
Wigging--Wow, that is some difference in temps in the wintertime! Summers must be broiling!
Janky--Congrats on becoming an "official" senior citizen!Make sure to check for all the discounts you can get!
CHRISSY!!! So good to see you in the Lounge!Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you, too!
Karen--looks like we have a new mantra--"65 and still alive"!Meet you there in a few years.
Jazzy--Wow, being interviewed by one of the techie guys must have been fun!
Illi--Have a good time in NOLA!I spent a weekend there a few years ago, it was a blast. I loved the Café Du Monde coffee and Beignets. It's a great place for breakfast some morning!
Goldie--have the facility staff checked your mom for a UTI?
Jazzy--dementia is a cruel disease. Just cruel, to the victim and the family.

goldie - I was wondering how your mom is doing, mine seems to have stabilized when I chat with her via facetime or on the phone, though she is still not 'here'...so very difficult isn't it? We head to see them February 27 and will stay a week, then off to Sarasota to visit our son and his family, our older grandkids, then home... thank you for the birthday wishes, I hope we all keep 'partying' along until our time is done..
Karen - I wish you many, many more after sixty five (healthy and healing of course)!
illimae - I would love to get to New Orleans, one of these days - Happy Anniversary!
Jazzy - hopefully you can unwind in the upcoming days ahead, enjoy your weather and think of us that experience snow and cold - brrr!
Wiggin - SC is not too far from Georgia, but probably not close enough to get together for a bevvy
NM - Glad to hear Sadie is frolicking and being her silly self - how are you doing? Staying warm I hope?!
Wishing us all healing, better health, happiness and laughter (always laughter!!). Cheers janky

Ilona, happy anniversary! You'll enjoy NOLA (we've been there at least 6 times and we're going back in March for the American College of Cardiology meeting). There's been a boom in new restaurants, with old ones like Brennan's getting a modern upscale menu. My fave old-school place is Galatoire's, especially Sunday noon (lots of families coming in after church, with the little ones dressed in their Sunday best with behavior to match). For more contemporary classics, Commander's Palace. For meat, I like Cochon (very informal, try to sit at the counter to watch the chefs). Seafood? GW Fin's. Prefer the original Emeril's to his spinoffs. Gordy likes Jacques Imo's (outside the Quarter) but it's walk-ins only often with long waits. For soul creole, Dooky Chase--it's also outside the Quarter but worth the ride. Avoid Pat O'Brien's--it's a tourist trap full of drunken frat boys. (Bourbon St. in general has become a depressing theme-park of tourists in too-skimpy clothes, flip-flops, fanny packs and drinking 18-inch neon-colored sweet drinks like the "Hand Grenade"--the soundtrack being not buskers, jazz or zydeco but loud bad classic-rock bar bands). Take the streetcar uptown for down-home brunch at the iconic Camellia Grill (counter seating, no reservations, cash-only last I checked).
For authentic Cajun music, be sure to stop in at Tipitina's, especially on a day when there's a "fais do do" dance (it is considered rude to turn down an invitation to dance--even if you have your sweetie with you--unless you're disabled). You need to see Preservation Hall for classic Dixieland jazz (long lines, short shows) but there are often fantastic teenage and even middle-school jazz bands busking near Jackson Sq. And there are great jazz sets in the little clubs along Frenchmen St. about 1/2 mi. outside the Quarter.
Do go to Cafe du Monde (the French Mkt-Jackson Sq. original--hover over a table and grab it when someone leaves--or the less-crowded indoor branch inside the Rivergate center). Wear light-colored clothing and try not to sneeze--the powdered sugar gets over everything you wear, but it's worth it.

Some my petrified wood that I said I would share.

Thanks for the tips Sandy, all good advice. However, a Hurricane from Pat O’Briens is on my list of touristy musts, lol.
0 -
Goldie, those petrified wood rocks are pretty! No wonder she's glad to get them!
0 -
illlimae-watch out for the Pat O Briens hurricanes! The first one tastes awful, but the second through sixth taste better and better! I do not recommend getting past a second! (Honeymoon trip 23 years ago...spent a good 2 days recovering from my hurricanes)
Beautiful pieces, Goldie! I’m so sorry about your mom. Wish I could hug you!
Congrats on senior citizenhood, Janky! I do travel through and to Georgia a few times a year. I’ll be in Atlanta in February as long as my treatment schedule allows.
NativeMaine- our weather is crazy here in the winter. Summer is broiling roasting burning inferno time! But like I said, we have an ocean!
Guess what ladies......I got my drains out! Prosecco to celebrate at lunch today with a bottle of real champagne in the fridge for later. Wahoo!

Never been to NOLA, so I don't have any do's or don'ts to offer.
Wiggy, I'll take a virtual hug. Had to laff at your Hurricane story.
These rocks I picked up for myself, just thought they were so pretty. They are too big for what my DD wants.
NM, I do think it's a UTI mixed with morphine that is doing this to my mom. Yesterday morning she was fine and then back at it in the evening. I know she told one of the nurses that she thought she had a UTI, but I don't think they did anything about it! Hospice nurse called my brother yesterday so they will check it.
Leaving around 9 this morning.

Good Morning, Loungettes!Hmm, I just noticed that the 6 Geese drink I posted a pic of didn't go through. It looked like it did on my end!Ah, well, it's not like we're hurting for drinks! Raining this ayem, a very, very cold rain. Lots of cars off the road. Not going to be a fun drive to the podiatrist this ayem. I've got another Morton's Neuroma that's making it hurt to walk, hoping to get another steroid injection, the last one worked for 7 years! Sadie says "Hi" to everyone!
Janky--I am staying warm and doing pretty well, thanks!Got my first oil tank fill of the season the other day. This time last year I got a fill that cost me almost $400, this one is half that. The heat pump has taken a bit of getting used to but I think I've got it figured out and the house is pretty comfortable most of the time. A bit drier going from baseboard to hot air heat, but nothing that can't be fixed by a $10 humidifier! Much better than last year when I struggled to get the house above 60 degrees most days.
Chi--Good point about the powdered sugar on the beignet at Café Du Monde! I really enjoyed the horse and buggy ride through the French Quarter.
Goldie--that is very cool looking petrified wood!
Wigging--I bet your ocean is really warm enough to enjoy swimming in, too!The Gulf Stream is way off shore by the time it gets to Maine, people get hypothermic swimming in the ocean here in the summer! HOORAY FOR DRAINS OUT!!!!!Absolutely celebrate with anything you want!Such sweet release!
Goldie--eggnog whipped cream?? That's a new one on me!Sounds delish, though!Boy, the Bailey's I bought the other day is getting a workout!

Good advice Wigging 😀
Great pics NM
Sending out good vibes for your upcoming scans Goldie.
I’ll post some pics from the quarter, arriving Sunday night.
Anyone here from memasue?

I was in NOLA the beginning of last Sept. for our 40th wedding anniversary. I am sure you will have a great time illimae.
I am reading about the cold weather that some of you are having. I almost feel guilty to say I am cold. I live in Florida and we have been having quite a lot of rain and wind, but Christmas day is suppose to be nice. Sometimes I feel like it is a different cold here, maybe because of humidity its a wet cold it feels colder at the same temperature. Maybe my blood has thinned and I am acclimated for Fl and I am just crazy!
I am about all ready for Christmas and will get food for Christmas dinner this weekend. Trying to keep all cheerful for grandchildren. My daughter wants me to go to Branson, Missouri with her after Christmas for a week. I am having trouble getting myself psyched up to go. I think I need a few days off at home, but I have never been there so I am determined to make the most of it.
NM - The mulled wine sounds good - I am going to make it year- if I was there I'd come and drink yours with you.
0 -
illimae - Where is memasue?
0 -
Mistyeyes- thinking of you this holiday and know it won't be an easy one for you. Branson is a really fun place, I was there decades ago and heard it is even better now. If you have never been and have an interest, definately go. Probably won't be too busy this time of the year either?
I too heard the east coast is getting a lot of cold and weather. Making for some tough holiday travel for folks starting their way to see family for Xmas.
Jazzy sitting in the hot spring, lol

Jazzy, love the picture!!!! lol Seriously, I need to go out west one day just to get in one of those hot springs!!! It looks so relaxing and so much out of my norm.

Officially on winter break Spent the morning running errands and getting my haircut. Early (before 10) all the stores were quiet. Last minute order on Amazon - will have everything by Monday - Prime is the reason I've spent too much money this past week, yet I really didn't spend much, but without Prime, I would not have ordered anything!!!
Time to get busy in the house and cooking Shabbat dinner.
