Lori, I don't mind "fishy" taste (it's fish, after all)--but if it's excessively so in a species like salmon that shouldn't taste that way, it was either stored improperly (allowed to thaw and then refreeze in the package) and allowed to spoil, or it was a dirt cheap kind of salmon. "Keta," sometimes called "chum" is almost the trash-fish of the species. In fact, it used to be called "dog" salmon because it was (still is) used primarily in pet food. It does taste "fishier" than more expensive salmon (whether wild Pacific or farmed). The one good thing about it is that it's wild-caught Pacific, and not farmed. It started showing up frozen in bags at big-box stores because Pacific salmon became popular due to its higher omega-3 content and lack of the hygienic problems that can crop up in crowded poorly maintained fish farms. Keta is often from the end-of-the run, when the salmon have metamorphosed and are almost at their spawning grounds. They will have a lower body mass per fish for that reason. It's affordable and you usually see it in individually frozen fillets in larger bags in the freezer case. If you don't like fish you won't like it.

Pacific, because it is wild and feeds naturally on marine life further down the food chain, will not have the silky, mild buttery taste & texture of properly-farmed Atlantic (which is fattier but whose fat is mainly the less-healthful Omega-6). Pacific is "oily" rather than "fatty;" and its oils are delicate and can go rancid if it takes too long to get from boat to market or restaurant (and if it sits too long in the market). Some of the best Pacific salmon (Copper River, Bristol Bay, BC/WA coast, even Bering Strait) is flash-frozen on the boat within minutes of being caught, with no ill effect on smell, taste or texture when properly thawed and stored.

I don't trust big-box stores--not even Costco (I don't do Sam's for ideological reasons--it's part of Wal-Mart) for seafood, unless it's one of those periodic seafood "road shows" where all the fish is fresh and you can see and sniff what you're getting. I buy straight from the fish counter at the supermarket or fish market. (You probably don't get much fresh fish out in your neck of the woods, alas).

There are a couple of farmed Atlantic-type salmon that are responsibly and sustainably farmed (MSC-certified) in cold, cold water: Skuna Bay from NZ, and Verlasso from Chile. They are fed a diet that comes close to what a wild salmon would eat, with little to no grain, no antibiotics (used in overcrowded fish farms), and no hormones to make them mature faster.

My guess is that what Sam's sold you was either Keta (that's what Target sells too), or if it was a higher grade, was allowed to thaw too long at the packing plant, in transit or on the loading dock.

Oh, and Gordy's move was a snap. He Ubered it over here behind the van (and ditched his crummy little loveseat in his alley), and Carrie & I directed the movers where to put the few pieces we were taking back because his & Leslie's new rooms are too small for them. We then followed the van to the new apt., which is very nice--lots of built-in cabinetry, restored original oak woodwork (nicer than the painted-over stuff in our house) big bay window, fireplace (woodburning but perhaps decorative), large kitchen (no dishwasher, but dbl. sinks) with plenty of cabinetry. Little counter space save for a table, but we can probably get them a rolling butcher-block island/cart. Patio with Weber kettle out back. Nice shady street, quiet neighborhood with a great neighborhood association, plenty of street parking (except on Cubs game or Wrigley Field concert days, but Leslie has a parking permit and they have a book of guest permit slips). Even a little vest-pocket park in mid-block, with gazebo, garden and park benches. The whole shebang took less than 2 hrs., because they had the new king bed, dining room set & couch delivered and brought their clothes and other stuff over in shifts over the past week.

Only sticking point is his queen-size mattress & frame, which his ex-GF's friend was supposed to move in his truck till he had a stroke. She's found another friend with a pickup truck.

ChiSandy - How do you know all this stuff? I am really impressed. I do buy any fish fresh from the counter or fish market. We don’t get that much wild salmon, but do have plenty of catfish and shellfish that are local.

I have been painting a wooden bench my DH found by the side of the road. It is a Charleston style bench with rolled arms and a wide seat. I plan on giving it to my older son for his birthday. He recently rebuilt and painted his front porch. I think this would look lovely with some pillows. Not real manly, but heartfelt!

Been very hot here. I walked this morning farther than I should have. I have a spritzer water bottler I use to cool off with, but it took quite a while to cool down. Had to really talk to myself to get the laundry going and a few other chores accomplished. Sooooo easy to be lazy and just sit and read. I am rewarding myself for completing most of my chores with some well chilled Pinot Grigio.

    Take care!

    Early mornin' ladies,

Slept most of the day yesterday and went to sleep early, now woke up. I get days like that I really can't wake up, I really need my coffee, loads.

Pictures are beautiful, when my parents went that direction my mom just loved it and I always saw why and now it's even better. Ur having a great time and that's what counts. And u picked a great place.

Lori I'm so glad ur feeling better still take it easy tho.

Kim u and Sadie certainly deserved a good day of rest and rubing her belly is not work at all.

Jazzy those flowers are beautiful and the bee looks comfortable too. BTW I'm sure I'm wrong but isn't oleander poisoness, I don't believe it stays in the bloodstream very long. Chit I would be afraid to touch them. Oh another murder mystery on my brain.

It is wonderful how so many of u can download pics. We all get to share where u are, what u see and all different parts of the world. For the most part we do live vicariously thru all of u in all different places. If I downloaded u would see only a mess or my deck, but believe me I'm not complaining, I enjoy everything nowadays.

Ever since Joey got out of school, I have no idea what day it is and always think it's Sat. until sat comes for some reason I think it's Monday. He's really goofed me up.

And Jazzy ur right I cant believe it's almost the end of June, where did it go, just a lot of rain so far. It'll probably be super dry soon and hot ick in my mind.

    Have a great Tuesday everyone.

Good Morning, Loungettes!Happy Twofer Tuesday! Boy, yesterday was a BEAUTIFUL day here. Wish I could have been outside more. Rain is coming in later today and through the rest of the week. Oh well, I've got lots of inside stuff that needs to be done. Silly Sadie will love being able to go out in the rain and getting wet right before bedtime. You know the dog is spoiled when you let the dog get on the bed while still wet from rain! Makes for smelly sleeping sometimes! Actually, she's pretty good about letting me towel her down first, most of the time.

Morning, Happy!I love the pics that get posted, too. Such fun to see!

Goldie--Sounds like your liver got a bit overworked and had a little tantrum. It's allowed!Glad you are feeling better! LOL at the windy Monkey!

    Jazzy--beautiful rose!

Illi--sounds like a great drink to go with lobstah! Ooh, look at those steamahs, and the corn on the cohb, and specially them red bugs!YUM!

Chi--Great info about salmon, thanks for sharing! Good to hear Gordy and Leslie's move went well. The park sounds sweet.

Librarian--Good for you for walking AND getting some other things done! Be careful in the heat, that can wear you out really fast.

Cammy Cat--Silly kitty!I hear you about the coffee. Coffee is a major player in my life. Oleander is toxic, if you eat it. Touching it won't hurt you.

    White Oleander Sangria

Pour 3 ounces Crisp White Wine and 1 ounce Cocchi Americano over ice, in a wine glass. Top with 1 ounce Lemongrass Lime Kombrewcha. Garnish with grapefruit triangles or other fresh citrus fruits.

jazzy, THANKS for the beautiful rose.

ChiSandy, Wow! Thanks for the lesson. We eat lots of salmon (from the fish counter, just because) and never knew there were so many varieties or drawbacks.

    JCS, the bench sounds lovely

cami, I envy that you think June has gone quickly. It's been at a snail's pace for me as I wait for surgery.

NM, we spoil our dog, too. Batman is a 10yo black lab and a gentle giant. (see profile pic) He's so tall people always ask if he's part Great Dane. But no, just all lab.

Today I had my pre-op physical and pre-op bloodwork. Tomorrow is pre-op with the PS. Finally, it feels like things are moving again.

    Cheers!

Lori, sure looks like Keta salmon to me—no way the better Pacific varieties are wasted on bulk package sales to warehouse clubs. The better stuff almost always goes first to high-end restaurants and then to fish markets and upscale supermarkets' fish counters. I also steer clear of salmon listed on the menus of chain restaurants (other than Dead Lobster or McCormick & Schmick), luncheonettes/Greek “coffee shops," bars, roadside mom & pop Midwestern joints, and restaurants in mid scale small hotels—they almost always buy their meat, fish & poultry frozen, portioned, & pre-packaged in bulk. (And half the time, with salmon, they're clueless about how it should be cooked—or it's so low-grade they have to overlook it). That's why when we can't find time to dine out at a good restaurant whose sources I trust (e.g., at one local fave, I know where they get even their produce), I will bust my butt cooking. And I like when “specials" listed are there not to use up stuff, but to take advantage of foods the chef was able to find fresh at the market.

Check Sam’s website (or if you also belong to Costco, their website) to find out when the next seafood “road show” will be. Bring a cooler or insulated shopping tote and ice packs.

Goldi - funny about your salmon. I'd take it back.

I have to disagree with Sandy though. I buy my salmon at Costco - individually frozen steaks & fillets - and it has always been good. Whether it is the Atlantic Farm raised or the Wild Sockeye, I've never had a complaint. Not to mention that the price is semi-reasonable. I can't usually afford to eat salmon out at restaurants so these cryo packs make good basic, healthy meals. Being retired and living in the real world on social security - I highly recommend them.

That said, what i have in the freezer now is wild caught cod - Kirkland Signature from Norway and distributed from Seattle, WA. It's been delicious. I'll be at Costco next week and check out the salmon packages.

There is so much about food and food production that the average Joe does not know. I do try to buy things in season and to shop local as much as possible. That being said, it is hard to do! Convenience is a huge factor when grocery shopping. Our favorite restaurants do base their menus on local ingredients down to telling you where the meat came from. My MIL always called that eatery, Redneck Lobster!

Goldie - Here is a pic of the bench. I did not get a before picture. It was white, but most of the paint had worn off. We did “distress” it so that some wood shows and some white paint. I bought the pillow at World Market for half price. I think it will look nice on their porch. image

Difficult for me to figure out what to get a 39 yr old man. He will get some cash to do with as he pleases!

Very hot here. I had lunch plans for today and tomorrow, but all have cancelled. 😞 I need to find some inside chores and get things caught up. Should not be too difficult! Drs appointments next week, then surgery and SBRT radiation. July will be recovery month.

Good Morning, Loungettes!Happy Hump Day! Yesterday's rain held off until the night, got 8 tenths of an inch overnight! At least it's warmed up and more comfortable in general now. I did get to take one of my adoptive Grammys outside in the garden yesterday. She was so cute, every time we went around the loop I would ask her if she wanted to go in or go around again she's grin and circle her finger. We were outside for almost half an hour before lunch. Some of the things I get to do at work hardly qualify as "work"! Sadie says "hi" to everyone, and asked me to pass along that she is collecting tummy tickles this week. For herself, not for any charity, she's going to keep them all for herself!

    Morning, and Happy Summer, Teka!

Goldie--wild caught in Alaska but product of China??? Wondering how that works! Was it good?

Happy--my Silly Sadie is a yellow lab.Don't think she's purebred, she came from a shelter. She's definitely smarter than me, though! Spoiling the fur babies is part of life for me.

Chi--good tip for Costco and Sam's Club shoppers!

    Morning, Minus Two!

Librarian--shopping locally can be really hard, especially on a budget. My freezer is my savior when it comes to being able to take advantage of bulk shopping and sales.

Minus, it's been awhile since I bought it, I don't have a receipt and the store is almost 3 hours away! I think I'll just toss them on the side of the road somewhere. Ravens or coyote will enjoy them!

JCS, the bench looks great, and I think it being black makes it a little more "manly".

NM, the fish was horrible and very "fishy" tasting. I see Silly Sadie is being a little shelfish? Good for her, she deserves those tummy tickles.

My poor daughter is having a time of it. Has to go for another mri, they think the spot on her kidney is Renal Cell Carcinoma, then on the way home involved in a hit and run. The person only hit her mirror, but hit so hard glass flew back in the car and she glass shards imbedded in her neck. She spent alot of money on getting a new flipper (tooth) said it looked horrible, so that has to go back. I think she is hitting a breaking point. My heart so goes out to her.

As for me, I started back up with a fever. 2 shaking and freezing episodes yesterday and last night. But feel good this morning. So just have to wait and see how the day goes. Monday I felt as normal as I usually do!

Afternoon ladies, I'm running <ok barely walking late>

Lori WTF is going on, ur poor DD keeps on piling on one thing after the other. Where that glass went looks like a horrible spot for any kind of accident. Poor baby u must be going cray cuz ur just not with her. And now u have a fever again, that shouldn't be happening at all by this time. Altho everything was good some kind of infection is going on someone has to figure it out cuz this up and down stuff is so not good for u, emotionally too. Please watch this carefully and do u still have ur meds for this??? I know I'm harping but u know that's what I do.

Kim ur guilty as all of us who have furbabies. We have always spoiled them, they take over out beds, couches, chairs and a lot of attention and we all love it. They are our family like crazy. And they bring us so much love it's worth it.

TEKA HAPPY HAPPY SUMMER It's so nice to see u. We miss u.

Happy ok do what u need to do for the time to go by, but member July is all rest month. I remember waiting for the date, then I had a couple of right away surgeries and all of a sudden it was over, I liked those the best, cu no thinking was involved.

Minus good to see u poop in.

JC u have July to rest up too. That bench looks great and really like the pillow for some pop for color, ur really good. And see July starts Monday so it's going to rush along.

I like the way I give advice I'm so late on getting some really scary tests myself, I keep putting it off hahaha so it's the old do what I say not what i do.

I decided Jazzy is working way to hard.

Sandy I'm so glad all is done with the moving and hope u didn't wear urself out either.

U all work like <I was going to say dogs, since it;s an expression> but our dogs don't do anything so I therefore work like a dog not u gals.

    Have a great mid-week

Good Morning, Loungettes!Happy Thirsty Thursday! Sadie and I are dragging butts out of bed this ayem. Not sure why I'm so tired, other than the natural result of getting over a cold/dealing with pollen issues. Anyway, Sadie and I opted to get up to the second alarm this ayem rather than the first. So not behind, but got a little more snooze time. Sadie, of course, is curled up in the recliner snoring!

Goldie--yeah, Sadie gets a little shelfish on occasion, but I figure she deserves it. She works hard for those tummy tickles.Your poor daughter, indeed!Life is just not being fair to her!Be sure to take care of yourself and your DD.The guy that hit her must have really been moving to knock the mirror inside the car like that!

    Misty--well said!

Cammy Cat--oh, yes, I am terribly guilty of spoiling my fur babies. Sadie has me very well trained and in return I get a warm bed in the cold winter, overnight cuddles when I wake up and can't sleep, someone to talk to who never tells me I'm wrong(even though she does disagree with me at times) and lots of entertainment. Small price to pay to get up and let her out at 2 ayem some nights and the occasional wet doggy smell in the bed!

Lori, your poor DD can't catch a break, can she? This too shall pass.

Today was our 48th anniversary. We went to RPM Steak--our go-to special occasion place when we have dietary restrictions. We were served complementary "Giuliana" (co-owner's wife) prosecco--so-so, but don't look a gift horse in the mouth. With our entrees we couldn't decide on a 2015 Chateau Mangot Grand Cru St. Emilion (right bank of Bordeaux, so Merlot-forward) and a steamroller of a 2015 Napa California Cabernet, Smith- Deveraeaux, so they poured us each half a glass. We both agreed that thought the Bordeaux seemed a tad acidic alone, it worked perfectly with steak whereas the Napa Cab's tannins failed to recede adequately when paired with steak.

    Illimae, where for art thou?

Going to town today for groceries. Was a bit tired yesterday, trying very hard to stay hydrated, but my urine has a strong smell, which leads me to believe I am dehydrated, yet again. No fever for a few days. But I feel good this morning.

Good morning! Happy Anniversary, ChiSandy. Sounds like a lovely dinner. $3.00 breakfast sounds great. Does Sadie get any? 🤪 Goldie, I fill a jug every morning with 64 oz of water. I have to drink that gone before I can have anything else. It has helped with the dehydration from the chemo.

I spent yesterday cooking things to freeze and have for when I have surgery and SBRT radiation. Instructions are included with each item so maybe DH can prepare a meal for me! Have to finish up a few things today after chemo (or tomorrow!) so we have plenty of choices. I made my Grandmother’s Applesauce Oatie cookies. I have to hide them so they are not eaten too quickly. Keeping busy does make the time fly by.

Hope everyone has a safe and happy 4th

Sorry ladies, I’m behind here, reading and posting. Got home yesterday and slept a lot. Here’s a few more pics from the trip.

Tuesday, we had fish n chips in Rhode Island, sooo good, I see why they’ve been in business so long. DOTD were Sam Adams and Del’s Frozen Lemonade.

Wednesday, we ferried out to Martha’s Vineyard for a walking tour of “Amity Island” (Jaws is my favorite movie, I’ve seen it at least 100 times)

I'm gonna try making lemon ricotta pancakes tomorrow morning, using almond & coconut flour and separating the eggs--yolks as a binder, stiffly beaten whites folded in. Pain in the keister, but worth it. No sugar (and s.f. syrup deflates them too soon), but maybe a sprinkle of monkfruit or xylitol granules...

I overdid the wine last night (likely my full weekly allowance), so tonight's DOTD was an almond-milk breve (a little heavy cream) latte. Alas, my fave almond milk--Pacific Original Barista Series, which froths easily in my Aeroccino or with a steam wand--is too carby. 9 gm/cup, vs. 6 for FairLife and 8-12 for regular dairy milk. And my beloved Oatly? Oy--16 gm per cup. Keeping it around for vegan friends who also shun almond products because almonds take an insane volume of water to grow. So hard to deal with my own near-keto craziness, vegans and moral-guilt-tripper* friends--if I boycott everything they insist I do, I would have to live like a starving naked off-the grid troglodyte.

The wonderful wacky WI folksinger-songwriter duo Lou & Peter Berryman wrote a song called "Uncle Dave's Grace," recounting what happened when they invited their ultra-progressive Uncle Dave to say grace at Thanksgiving dinner. After he has regaled and shamed them with tales of turkey cruelty, farmworker exploitation & pesticide exposure, sweatshop conditions, lead poisoning, & radioactive pollution involved in producing the lightbulbs & crystals in the chandelier, the narrator muses about what to do going forward:

"Go without food, in the nude, in a cave? Or next year, have someone say grace besides Dave." (I LOVE that song, whoever covers it)!

    * I shall bite my hand while I scream silently, and then go to the blackboard and write 100 times: "I will NOT utter the terms 'P.C'. nor 'politically correct"..."

JCS, good that you are preparing. Can you freeze the cookies and hide them in the freezer? Who will be the culprit to get into them? Be sure and put things at arms reach, so you don't have to stretch?

Illimae, lovely pics. But you are home already? Seems like you just left. Where are you off to next? Seen Jaws over 100 times! I can't watch something even twice! My DH is like you, but he likes City Slickers 2. We had fish n chips yesterday.

Mud, my DD has surgery Tuesday for the fibroids. I was surprise to hear they are keeping her overnight. Good grief, we can get both breasts lopped off, and go home the same day!

Sandy, good luck with those pancakes.

    NM, how was that breakfast?

Wishing everyone a great weekend. I hope someone goes to the hospital with my DD, so she is not alone. I doubt it will be her dad, as he took off last Friday and this Monday, to take her camping, canoeing and fishing.

Goldie, it does seem like a quick trip but it was 8 days, a week ago Wednesday through Thursday. Next is a short trip to the Frio river (3 hours west) to spend the 4th with friends. Then, Riot Fest in Chicago in September. Hopefully more travel to come 🙂

Good Morning, Loungettes!Happy Saturday! Boy-oh-boy did Sadie and I sleep in this ayem! Didn't get up until 8 ayem! Still struggling to keep my eyes open even now a couple hours and most of a cup of coffee later. I'm going to blame it on the gray and gloomy weather. Not sure how much will get done around the house today.Sadie says its ok anyway!

Goldie--the coughing is tapering off, things are turning around that way. Just feeling tired. I can't remember if I've said or not, but I've gotten some lettuce and spinach from the garden. The pepper plants are looking good, the tomatoes not quite a good-they need more attention than I've given them--the herbs are doing well.At the nursing home I pay $3 for a meal, breakfast, lunch or dinner. It's a sweet deal! Keep up the hydration, it can be hard work!

Librarian--Sadie didn't get any of my breakfast, but on BBQ Wednesdays, if there are any leftover hot dogs I'll bring her home one. Prepping meals is a great idea and will be a life saver.

Illi--You know the rules, don't worry about ketchuping, jump in where you are and move forward! Oh, my, those fish-n-chips looks so yummy!!! I'd love to see Amity Island!Jaws is a great movie, I still watch it once or twice a year. It's just a classic horror show!

Muddling--yeah, I had to fight off the carb coma effects of the waffle breakfast off and on all day! But it was so good, and so worth it. Good idea having them for supper, though!

Chi--those pancakes sound very tasty, but I can see where there is a lot of work involved! It can be a total minefield to get a bunch of people together for a meal these days. No matter where you think about going, SOMEONE has an objection!

Goldie--the breakfast was great!Waffle, home fries, bacon, coffee. I ate my breakfast with one of the residents and we had a wonderful time!
