Good Morning, Loungettes! Happy Twofer Tuesday! Yesterday was pretty successful. Mom's getting her cable and internet installed this afternoon. Now instead of complaining about not being able to watch TV or go on line she'll be complaining about how much it costs. Somehow she got it in her head that cable + internet was going to cost less than $100 per month, despite being told last time we were there that it would be at least $120 per month. Then when they got done with the DVR and wireless and other addons it hit $170 per month for the first year. Of course, it will go up after the first year, but we'll deal with that when it happens. Then I discovered she'd gone back to putting all her pills for the day in one box instead of using the pill minder I got her with ayem and peeyem, and she had a pile of pills for me to sort out 'cause she couldn't read the imprints. I got mad at her, read her the riot act, and now I'm going to set up her pills for her. I'm going to get her a second pill minder and top them off each time I visit so she's always got at least a weeks' worth of meds set out. It's a wonder she hasn't killed herself messing with those meds already!

    Wally--WhooHoooo indeed! That's wonderful news!

    Happy Happy

Even though I expected the hot flashes to start after the surgery, I thought it would be at least a couple more weeks before they came knocking on my door this morning! Sheesh!

Good Morning, Loungettes! Happy TGIF day, and Happy Day after the 5th of July Day! BCO wouldn't let me sign in yesterday, didn't recognize my username/password combo. It seems to want to do that once in a while. Fortunately, it only lasts a few hours to a day or so, otherwise it would be really annoying. The trip to the vet with the doggos went pretty well. Colt is a bit overweight, so we will work on that. The microchips that were placed when I adopted them have disappeared, which I didn't realize was a thing that could happen. When I adopted them they had already been chipped, but when the shelter tech scanned them to confirm the numbers there was no reading, so they chipped them again and got confirmation of the numbers, which I have lost. Now I wonder if they didn't get chipped initially, or if the shelter had a batch of bad chips or something. Anyway, we talked about getting them chipped, but since they are anxious at the vets and the needle used to place the chip is a big 'un (it looked like a 16 or 14 gauge needle, the size used during trauma care for transfusing large amounts of blood and fluids very fast, compare that to the butterfly used to draw blood that is a 25 gauge (bigger the number, smaller the needle) I chose to pass on that this visit and rethink the whole chipping thing. If the chips can disappear, not sure it's worth bothering with when I can make sure they have ID tags on their collars for a lot less time, money, and pain.

The new cable for Mom is going to be a success. I wrote down how to get to the top 3 channels she wanted, and will keep adding to the directions as time goes by. No written manual or information comes with it though, which is a real problem and Mom depends on having written instructions for things. She's doing pretty well getting the TV on and off and getting to where she wants to go, even though it's not exactly the same way as she remembers doing it many years ago with a different company. Changes in how things work really throw Mom off these days.

Whoo Hoo, Mommy! Grad job you've done!!! I guess the hot flashes want to get in on the fun and not miss any of the graduation party!

    Morning, Miriandra, Carole!

Mommy- I had a full abdominal hysterectomy including ovary removal in 2012. I had a lot of issues with hot flashes after that and then with the bc dx and all that followed with the AIs. Loosing the estroen is a big change to the body. Keep an eye on your bone health too, as many of us will have bone health issues through time. Oh and I heard there is a new drug for hot flashes a friend who is on tamoxifen is taking and that may help you too (I don't know the name of it but others here might….)

Congrats on finishing your degree! Whoo hoo!

Speaking of bone health, I am heading to my fourth Evenity shot my bone health provider started me on in April. I will seeing her next week and did some updated blood work including some markers that will help me to know how well things may be working so far. I also had an updated dexa scane (last one was 2 years ago) to see if things started improving on the year I did on Reclast and with this. I will be doing these shots through next March and then we move back to Prolia again. More to follow!

I’ve been on Vitamin D for a couple of years at the recommendation of my old oncologist. GYN says no HRT though.

Good Morning, Loungettes! Happy Saturday! The neighbors decided to celebrate the 4th with quite the fireworks show last night. I could see and hear them from my place, not too bad a display! They will shoot off fireworks periodically during the summer but since they always stop by 10 or 10:30 peeyem and it's not terribly often it's not much of an issue. Zoe is not fond of the sound, last night she went and hid in the closet! I think it's the flash that bothers her more than the sound, she reacts more to lightning than thunder, but it's hard to tell where she can hear so much better than I can.

Jazzy--good advice for Mommy, and the rest of us, too!

Mommy--there are other things than HRT for dealing with hot flashes. When I was in treatment gabapentin helped a lot with the hot flashes. That's an old drug, I don't know what the new one is, but there is new info coming out all the time about managing hot flashes. Hugs.

Nosey question: what does Cilantro taste like to you? Citrusy parsley or soapy?

Cilantro (aka the leaves of the coriander plant) is a tasty herb to most people. A pleasing combination of flavors reminiscent of parsley and citrus, the herb is a common ingredient in many cuisines around the world. However, some people find cilantro revolting, including, famously, the chef Julia Child. Of course some of this dislike may come down to simple preference, but for those cilantro-haters for whom the plant tastes like soap, the issue is genetic. These people have a variation in a group of olfactory-receptor genes that allows them to strongly perceive the soapy-flavored aldehydes in cilantro leaves. This genetic quirk is usually only found in a small percent of the population, though it varies geographically. Interestingly, places where cilantro is especially popular, such as Central America and India, have fewer people with these genes, which might explain how the herb was able to become such a mainstay in those regions. East Asians have the highest incidence of this variation, with some studies showing that nearly 20% of the population experiences soapy-tasting cilantro. There is some evidence that cilantrophobes can overcome their aversion with repeated exposure to the herb, especially if it is crushed rather than served whole, but many people simply choose to go with their genetic inclinations and avoid its soapiness altogether.

It tastes yummy to me. We eat a lot of it.
We moved to WA from TX where thunderstorms were frequent. One day our dog acted so strangely that we wondered if there was going to be an earthquake. After almost an hour we started hearing thunder. Obviously the dog heard it long before we did. She used to spend the fourth on the floor of my closet

To me, cilantro tastes like old, well used gym shoes that have been left in a locker too long. I have a problem even being close when it's stocked next to the radishes in the grocery store.

Good morning all! So, last night I tried that “beach” wine I mentioned recently and it was pretty disappointing. It was dry (which I’m not a fan of), boozy and worst of all, it had no taste. It was so odd that I had DH try it too but he’s not on chemo and it was like boozy water to him too. Fooled by a great looking bottle (sigh)

I opened a Marselan grape varietal. Lovely. New to me.

We hit 84 yesterday and my heat pump died. Angry doesn't begin to describe my feelings. Hottest 5 days coming up and figures it is over the weekend with no 24 hour assistance.

I adore cilantro; DH has the genetic mutation that makes it taste soapy.

Mmmm, cilantro… I like it, much more so than parsley. My Mom, however, loved parsley and always happily ate the parsley garnishes from everyone's restaurant dinners.

Mae - the bottle is lovely. Sorry the wine didn't match the idea.

Wally - sorry about the heat pump.

Since we potentially have a hurricane coming in - and it was very dark & rainy by 3pm, I had shot glass of Tuaca BEFORE dinner. Then a lovely Kirkland Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc with my salad.

    Minus - stay safe

Mommy - congrats! What's your degree in?

Kim - glad that you got your mother's cable figured out.

Jazzy - I was on Prolia then switched to Zometa. I had a DEXA scan last August so another year till next one. I was upset with results as not improvement, but doctors were pleased as no decline and said no decline is what they hope for. I've been in the osteoporosis range for several years. Hope you get the results you want.

Been fighting a cold for about a week. Debating on going to the doctor - thought it was sinus, but it's getting more chesty. We leave Thursday for a month and don't want to leave sick. I guess I have a couple days to decide. Tomorrow I have a podiatrist appointment to see what NON surgical treatments are for my bunion and hammer toe - they hurt on an off - better when I wear sandals as nothing is touching them. They both seem to be getting worse.

Had a wonderful 10 day visit with my daughter and granddaughter. They left this morning. I'm going to miss the little munchkin. WE've seen them 4 times since January and now it will be 3+ months till we see them again. They will be here in October.

    Have a great Sunday.

Good Morning, Loungettes! Happy Sunday Funday! Another day with the heat index into the mid to high 90s on tap for today. The puppers are being very lazy, and hanging out inside with me with the fans and the AC. I was hanging out clothes just now and the sunshine was burning hot on my tender skin. Not going to be a good day to take the kayak out, but maybe this evening when the sun is going down, if thunderstorms are predicted. I've also got to run over to Mom's today, her new cable isn't working and she can't find the paperwork with the account numbers and such when she called for service. Hopefully it will be something I can figure out.

    Cilantro poll: likes 6 doesn't like 2

Wren--obviously puppers can hear thunder long before we mere humans. I feel bad for the puppers who end up spending the 4th scared and hiding.

    Sunshine--counting your votes.

Mommy--I'm counting your vote as a doesn't taste like soap vote

Minus--I wonder if you are one of the 20% if people with the variant genes?

Illi--so sorry the beach wine was so disappointing! The bottle does make it look tempting. Such deception!

Wally--oh, wow, bad timing on the heat pump dying! Adding one vote to both sides for you and DH.

Miriandra--I actually like the taste of parsley, too, and have been known to nibble on a garnish from time to time!

Minus--Here's hoping the hurricane isn't a hurricane by the time it gets to you!

Karen--prayers the cold runs its course quickly and with a minimum of fuss and bother. So glad you had a great visit the DD and GD. I'm sure the next 3 months will feel like a very long time.

Good day for a classic DOTD:

    Traditional Hurricane Recipe

    • 2 oz. light rum
    • 2 oz. dark rum
    • 2 oz. passion fruit juice
    • 1 oz. orange juice
    • ½ oz. fresh lime juice
    • 1 tablespoon simple syrup
    • 1 tablespoon grenadine
    • Garnish: orange slice and cherry

Shake all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice and strain into a hurricane glass filled with ice. Garnish with a cheery and an orange slice.

Good Morning, Loungettes! Happy Monday Monkey Day! Waking up to another warm and sticky day. Mom's cable problem was an easy fix, just needed to press the Cable button on the remote to tell the TV where to look for what to show. She's got CREATE back on and is a very happy camper. Somehow she got her phone on Airplane Mode again the other day, but also managed to get it off. She was trying to call me, and trying to call other people to call me to call her. She didn't understand that in Airplane Mode the phone won't make or get calls. Then we got to sit out in the screen house where there was a bit of a breeze for a bit and just visit.

Wally--hoping the repair folks get in and get things fixed today, and no power outages!

    Morning, Mommy!

    Jazzy--beautiful hibiscus!

    Thinking of you, Minus!

Hope you don't lose power, Minus. Hope you get your a/c repaired, Wally. So far we haven't needed our a/c this summer but the temperatures are supposed to get warmer this week.

I like cilantro but haven't had a lot of luck growing it. Parsley seems easy to grow.

So far all my bone density tests have been good showing me with Normal bones. But I had x-rays on my lower back last year that showed deterioration. I will be going to the gym today and a part of my workout is some floor exercises for back pain. I don't have actual pain but some back ache occasionally.

Mommyof3, I have a master's degree in English earned many years ago.

    Happy Monday to everyone.
