The talk wasn't all bad... I was reminded to take vitamin C with my calcium.

    Hot Flash Sparkler

This is a healthy, heart-smart cocktail because of the pomegranate and ginger. It's like sangria, and just as potent, but perfect for brunch.

    Makes 4 cocktails

    1 cup pomegranate juice
    1 tablespoon sugar
1 small piece fresh ginger, peeled and cut to yield one 1/4-inch-thick slice
    4 tablespoons fresh orange juice
1 teaspoon Cointreau or other orange liqueur
1 bottle (750 milliliters) brut Champagne, well chilled

Combine pomegranate juice, sugar, and ginger in a saucepan; bring to a boil, and cook, stirring, until mixture is reduced to 1/3 cup, about 10 minutes. Let cool. Pour 4 teaspoons pomegranate syrup, 1 tablespoon orange juice and 1/4 teaspoon Cointreau into each of four 6-ounce Champagne flutes. Add 2/3 cup Champagne to each flute. Garnish with 3 to 5 pomegranate seeds each.

Yay to the gals at the HTL for rallying around our Stanzie! Great advice, and I hope with us all supporting you and standing with you on this, that you will be able to take some action. I think we should get OUR bus ready and all climb aboard and go talk to that principal with you and let him/her know what is going on with that bus driver. Stand strong!!!

Gail, I will take one (or more) of the Hot Flash Sparklers, please! Looks and sounds yummmmy. Think it will help my hot flashes? Oh, who cares....enough of these drinks and that will be the least of my concerns!

Had the kitchen counter guy here, and just ordered our new countertops. YAY...moving along...but he mentioned that new granite-looking sink that I think you got, HD. Need some feedback from you on if you really like it or not. Will have to empty the likker cabinet when he puts the counters in.....plus all the decanters at the bar area....sheesh...that might take a truck load or two...LOL.

Oh, I think my hot flash is sparkling.....(or is it the drink?)......

Well, Kathy you could just unload the likker onto the bus!

I've heard that alcohol makes hot flashes worse, but I don't think those people are drinkers. Sure, if I have one little glass of wine before bed, I'm going to have a warm night. But if I keep drinking I sleep like a baby. So the more alcohol you consume, the less hot flashes you get.

Oh you guys are just so wonderful!!!! Wish you all were in my physical life not just virtual!

So, I emailed the teacher twice. I called the school three times kept being told to call back and talk to someone else, the principal wasn't in today. At the end of it all I now have 6 different numbers for the transportation department. Great. Basically I think I need the information as to whether she was late picking the kids up from school before I talk to transportation. Then I'll call and see what they say. Of course when I called about that first day when he was so late - transportation said they would call me back and a week later they did but kept saying they didn't understand why this was a problem if he was coming home OK now. I'm very surprised his teacher didn't get back with me.

It is strange we don't get any kind of student directory for Middle School so I have no way to contact the other parents. I thought about whether the child could have an allergy that she wouldn't know about and I certainly thought of someone grabbing them or them dashing into the street as Sean will sometimes do. My wonderful friend and babysitter since the kids were born had her first thought that what if she was abusing them in some way and buying them treats to keep their silence. Why on earth if this woman is normal would she open herself up to us even thinking such things?

Of course the other problem is my ex. He isn't good with conflict and avoids them like no one I have ever seen. He doesn't want me to cause trouble. He is "letting" me pursue it so far then if he thinks I've gone too far then he will really be a pain and stick up for the bus driver so...? Anyway, thank you all for listing and letting rant and worry. He got home normal time today. And I'll take it up again tomorrow and see where I can get. My cousin said she knew of things like that and she said they won't fix it just tell you not to take the bus - problem solved. It isn't right but then so much these days just isn't right is it. Thanks again!!!!

Stanzie, I just got home and read the posts.  I would follow that dim wit in my own car (if need be more than once), and document it on film.  I guarantee sh!t like that should not happen.  I am no way an academic professional, nor do l have bus driving experience...but I sh!t you not....in my state I have never ever seen a bus, let alone a small bus for kindergarten half dayers, or special needs kids stopping anywhere but right in front of that childs residence!  I am surprised a clerk at the store didn't call and report it!  You stay on it.  Hi everyone else....Kathy, I PM'd you about sink.  I am ready for happy hour with my girls.  Lori! Hi...not going through all that hi stuff again though.  Thanks for the drink AStorm!  Mrs Green Bean...I saw you said Hi today!  Well HowDee?  Oh, now that's funny, I just said two things at once...sorry, I need a drink and right now.  Junie, save me a brew....I'm on my way!  HD

Hunky--I saved you a seat by the pool!   The way I'm slamming down these dog beers is keeping Jocks pretty busy!   He'll need Pants to help when you show up!   junie is NOT having a good day!   Our kitchen fridge gave up the ghost.   Repairman said it is the compressor--$600 + labor to repair--he suggested just getting a new fridge.   So, I started browsing on-line.....I got  out the manual to get size, etc, because I want the same size....we remodled kitchen a few years back so appliances aren't that old, but we did not buy extended warranties on anything.   WELL--read in book that the compressor is covered by warranty for 5 years.   So, we call the store and they look up when we bought the stuff--and, we're within THREE weeks of the deadline!!!     So, they are coming tomorrow to pick it up; deliver a "loaner" and take it to see what needs to be done!  I don't foresee a perfect ending to this, but it would be wonderful to not have to buy a new fridge just now!      The contractors showed up unannounced today to measure the floor space for the rooms we want to redo in the spring--the house was a mess!      I want to replace the subfloor in two bathrooms before they start with the concrete board and tile--they don't think it's necessary and will be a big expense.   They are honest as the day is long, but I disagree with them on this one.   Of course, dH agrees with them--so have a fight on my hands but too many other things to get over first!   The dumpster should be delivered tomorrow--that will start WW III  !!!!!

waaahhhhh    waaahhhhh ...ok--over my little rant.   Suddenly, the beer tastes great!!!

Stanzie, I have no advice above what has been given to you on the bus issue.   That is disturbing to say the least.   I tried to remember the days of my kids and school bus rides and what would I do?   In my situation, it would not have been the teacher or principal of the school who could address the situation.   Would have been over their heads with the Superintendent of schools for the district where the bus contract would have been negotiated.   I'm sure your situation is slightly different.   Good luck and please let us know how it resolves!!!

Big hugggsssss to everyone!  Gonna play Scarlett O'Hara--"Tomorrow is another day"!!!!!

O no Beans!!!  Sounds dreadful.  I never needed the anti-puke meds other than what they gave me during the infusions.  I even cut back on the decadron.

Trust me, you will really enjoy those drinks on the other end.

    Stanzie.....YIKES on the bus issue.

Junie.....good luck on the fridge.  At least this didn't happen in mid summer.

Me.....I've been going since early AM and am now ready to wind down with a lovely glass of red wine.  Still have clean dishes to put away.  Seem to be making progress on all fronts.  The most glorious fall day here today. - Claire

Hello ladies - I read this thread often and feel so damn jealous that some of you are now able to return to alcohol.  Tomorrow is my birthday - it doesn't feel quite the same that I can't lift a lovely glass of wine.  Did at least some of you cheat a bit?  I got a pretty stern warning about alcohol during chemo (concern for more abuse of liver) and in general (concern that alcohol plays a role).  I guess I am focused on wanting it because I can't have it.  My H and I used to go to happy hour once or twice a week and we still do, but I think he is having more fun than I :)

Loving Seattle weather this past week....

jodi - I don't think I'd cheat but I didn't have chemo so who am I to say... I was able to give up both alcohol and coffee during pregnancy -- twice. You can always get your virtual cocktails here as well as some good company without compromising your treatment. It's only temporary!

AStorm - OMG, I am so happy to hear that this is virtual cocktails.  Perhaps it is the chemo-fog, but when I found this thread, I really didn't know for sure.  Virtual I can do really well.  Recently, my H has been making me "and tonics"  :)  But it is getting chilly these days. so tonight he brought home non-alcoholic wine - but it was really quite awful.  Thanks for filling me in - feel better now!

Oh Beauius - I'm so sorry. I guess now that you know what is coming it is really hard to go back to it. Just keep thinking how it will kill off anything bad so you will be stronger - well at least eventually..... you all going thru chemo just ..... well you all are doing great and we are all proud of you!

Oh Claire, I remember Decadron from my Mom having to take that, what is it for again? I was thinking it was for seizures but she had lung cancer which spread to her brain so might be something else all together.

Thanks again for everyone's support, I'll let you know when I know anymore!!

It has been 6 mos since my surgery and I just got totally depressed last night and took a shower and cried through the whole thing. It just hit me out of the blue - any of you all get this?

Jodie.....I know having a birthday w/o alcohol is the pits.  I didn't drink during chemo either as was taxing my liver more than enough.  I didn't think it was a good idea.  Plan a celebration for when you are done with everything.

Stanzie.....Decadron is used to help with nausea and other side effects of chemo.  Makes you hyper and has a long half life in your body.  I couldn't hack a third day of it, and didn't need it.  So I asked for less, and my oncologist agreed.

Stanzie.....I was in a funk about 2 weeks ago, but much more career/money related than from treatment.  It went something like "I just fought the fight of my life, and now I have to go back and get my career on track and make more money!"  There was other stuff going on.  Then it lifted.  Really helped that I got paid for a major chunk of work.

Beans......I was sooooooooo over it by last chemo.  I had started at the beginning of November and April was coming up.  I went out and did some career counseling (which turned out to be very important for the journey I have ahead).  Then my mind and body were out of sync.  It took about six weeks for everything to sort itself out which happened when I was finally done with the last chemo cycle.  Hang in there.

jodi - Well, some of us do imbibe but its really more about being supportive of each other whatever phase you are in. So another option is to have one of your supportive drinkin buddies her at HTL be your proxy drinker. Mostly we like to hang out here at the lounge. There are frequent parties, and sometimes we get on our party bus to go help out someone who needs a little extra support. There are plenty of us here who are willing to do that! There was a video on youtube with pics of our lounge but I couldn't find it...

Hey, where is Lori? Is she off on second honeymoon heaven?

Stanzie - Yes, you may recall I had a meltdown a few months ago when I was really stressed about an exam... a jerk at the coffee shop where I was studying was bashing his ex who was in victim mode after bc and I unloaded on him. The other day I was telling someone about my dx and I just heard myself saying how everything is fine and I'm so lucky and then I thought to myslef, "everything is fine! sure! I just had both breasts removed that's all! and now I take this drug that scares me and I have horrible hot flashes and I'm getting fat... and I want my mom and she is gone... " I had to go home and sob a little. When I was first dx'd, I told myself I could have one good cry and then I'd have to put on my big girl panties and deal with the situation head-on. That my DH pretends nothing happened helps me live that fantasy too. I saved that good cry through most of my treatment -- up until the coffee shop incident. Now I just cry whenever I need to.

Gail, I do the SAME thing! Just this weekend I saw a neighbor I rarely see, and she asked how I was doing, and I found myself saying "I am great;just fine! Ended up with perky boobs, which is a bonus. And esp like not having to wear a bra anymore." I guess for me, I would rather they think I am fine, then to worry about me. Although I did mention how the month of October portrays breast cancer in such a happy way,and that is NOT true. I told her we still lose so many to this disease.  But in reality, I do not want people to think of me as "the one that has cancer", as I just like to go on with life in as positive a mode as I can. But sometimes when I say how everything is fine, then I feel like a traitor, since it is H3LL to go through.

You asked about Lori....she just called me, and they are on vacation in Tennessee, and having a great time! I was hoping to meet her there this weekend, but right now am just too swamped with a million gazillion problems to take care of. Seems like they are multiplying day by day. Hope we can get together one of these days!!!

Did I miss the DOTD????? Yup, just virtual Jodi, but we do have fun here!!! Guess I'll just ask Pants to make me something special, and to bring it out to the pool. Just a chillin'......

Confused brain here...I must have missed some posts and I just found AStorm's mama bear face which is brilliant. Sorry for being a basket case lately, I tink I'm okay, but maybe not...I dunno...I just found the Hot Flash Sparkler too which looks fabulous. I haven't had hot flashes yet, but I'm happy to report Flo seems to have left for good. So maybe the sparkler is keeping hot flashes away??? I dunno...it's yummy though. You parents are so tough to put up with having to leave your babies with others...some of these stories are so disturbing...glad you ladies can put on your mama bear face and rip those weirdo's a new one.

AStorm - I so wish I could have been there when you went off at the coffee shop! You are so cool!! I'm glad you are letting yourself cry when needed, it works for me just, like, everyday!

Wahine - glad to hear your remodel is coming along and I like the idea of all the likker going on the bus with us to straighten out that principal. Your post about talking to others is so good. I try to minimize when I talk to fam or friends and say all is okay, but it is H3LL to go through. I also enjoy not having to wear a bra - that's another benefit! Smaller ta tas and no flo, no nose hairs, that's about all I can think of that's good about it. Oh, yes, and meeting all of you fine and beautiful ladies here.

Kira1234 and jodimaca - just a hello and a big welcome to this fun bar where the drinks don't give you hangovers no matter how many you have and none of the food has calories!!! And jodi - sending out a gigantic HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you with lots of cake and champagne!! I wouldn't hesitate to have a bit of wine on your birthday, but my oncologist's NP said it was okay inbetween cycles, just a glass of wine or one beer. I tried O'Doull's non-alc beer and it wasn't exciting so I went back to crystal light. Yuck!!

NM - Hi there and thanks for all your level headed smart words. You are just great!

Junie - I can't believe you were still under warranty! That is so cool, for me things always break right after the warranty expires. Hope you get that fridge fixed soon or else your dog beers will get cold and that's really bad!! Good luck with the remodel too, DH and I always fight about that stuff too, gotta pick your battles (and win)!

Claire - glad you didn't need puke pills. I take cytoxan pills for 14 days along with 2 MF infusions here and there, so I really like zofran every day, it's my pal, and then so is exlax - it's fun to watch them do battle in my...oh, I won't get graphic on you. I usually can get away with half a zofran pill but even when the pills are done there is some left over and sometimes I take ¼ zofran to keep nausea away. It really works, so for as much as I complain, just understand, I'm a big old crying, whining baby. Wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Only 2 cycles to go - yippee! Sounds like you are doing well and so glad for that. You did fight for your life and now you can get everything back on track. Way to go!!! And I so hope the $$'s start flowing in, I know so many of us have been hit by this recession bear. Best wishes to you.

Stanzie - yes, just when I start to feel more normal it's time to go back - but only 2 more cycles now...I can do it but appreciate being able to complain my a$$ off about it!! It's killing off everything bad except my attitude Yell I do appreciate the encouraging words so much. This has been an effort, but like I said before, I still think a year of physical chemistry (in college) was harder. I'm sorry to hear you got depressed and I sure hope your are feeling better today.

Well since I'm not sure what's on tap today, I think I will wander off to a dark corner of the bar with my bottle of Scotch and some dog beer chasers...all are welcome to join me in some good pouting and whining. After I'm good and loaded I'll get serious about packing. I will be "out" till probably Friday as we're driving 8 hours back to the coast tomorrow.

Love and hugs to you all,

    Beanius

P.S. I have a really scary Halloween pic for you, but don't look unless you are really brave...

I think I like this thread the best - welcoming and fun and real!  Yay!  So, today is my birthday and shortly we will head to dinner at a great little neighborhood Italian place in Montlake/Seattle.  I love the food there but I don't like the wine selection - that's why I picked it :)

How about each of you makes up a special concoction cocktail for and when I get home from dinner, I am going to sit here and dirnk every damn one of them.  I'll try anything, make 'em good and make 'em plenty.
