how about drinking?

Another terrible day for Liesl - had to take her back to the hospital this time they confirmed the very first thing I said.... Basically her esophogus doesn't work. So I'm now supposed to have her eat standing on her hind legs and keep her up for 30 minutes. Well, great. She is starving as she hasn't kept food down in days and she is so upset she won't let me pick her up so ???? Don't know how on earth to do this.... There is nothing worse than not being able to feed your babies - my boys were premature and they threw up everything for a year and a half both had failure to thrive diagnosis and now my little Liesl.

OMG - I also sat around humming My Seroma. Is there a seat at the bar for me tonight? I will bring a tray of these:

So very, very sorry to hear that, Stanzie. I hope you can get some food in her and keep her up like they said to do. So difficult, but realize you are doing all you can do, and that all of her life until now has been wonderful. Hold onto those good memories as you take care of her. Hugs for (((Stanzie & Liesel)))

WOW you girls have been busy!! No way I can catch up. That strawberry champagne thing looked yummy though!!
But Stanzie it sounds like you're really having a rough go with little Liesl. I'm so sorry for all you're going through.
Goldie I love your new profile pic. Is that your current hairstyle? Wow I'm jealous.
Just had my last AC infusion yesterday. YAY!! Chemo is done! So far just feel toxic (duh!) and little headachey. Now I just have to push through the next 10 days of SEs and then on to radiation. I'm really not looking forward to that, after looking through some pics on TimTam's site. Not going to be as smooth of a ride as I was thinking, especially with trying to go back to work part time. Now wondering if I should've just had a mastectomy and be done with it. Ugh.

Hi Ladies, 2nd day after getting poked is the hardest, should be feeling better later.. the whisky didn't work so I'm going for ouzo to kick the chemo sh*t out...yumm that soundez gudddd!!!
Hope all are well, many hugs, Beeeannnns

Hi all, Stanzie, give little Leisel a gentle pat from me and I'm sending you a warm (((hug))). Hope you can figure out a way to get some food into her that stays down.
To everyone else, have a great day!!! Not stopping for long as this old body has to adjust after changing from Arimidex to Femara and it's making me very tired. Catch you all later. Love n hugs.

HD - I'm thinking I should stock up on those orange bags... just in case Jackson heads this way again. SF was great -- I think DD belongs there but not sure if she'll get in as all the state universities are so impacted and nursing programs are really hard to get into on the West coast. Yeah, that sounds like something someone like "The Knack" would have recorded.
Stanzie - so sorry about your furbaby. Did your vet give you any suggestions for how to feed her upright? My WD isn't very interested in food most of the time so I can imagine this could be a challenge.
Chrissy - hang in there... hope the transition isn't to hard.
Well they have the framing walls up on the house behind us and it is SO CLOSE! OMG, this is not what I signed up for! I'm gonna start looking for alternative spaces... too bad I can't just design it like the HTL.
Congrats to MsNice!!! One step at a time... and celebrate as you go. FYI, I had bilateral mastectomies and it wasn't over. Five times in the OR, and a 15 months of chaos later I have a lump that appears to be an inflamed lymph node which will, nevertheless probably result in abother biopsy... I am convinced there is no easy path away from this thing. All you can do is take one step at a time down your chosen path.
0 -
Oh AStorm, sorry to hear about your inflammed lymph node. I haven't heard of that before. I'm sorry I know you must be awfully worried especially with all you have been through.
My old house, ( now where my ex lives) had a new house built next door and it is huge and so not in keeping with the neighborhood. They also killed a huge oak tree in his yard one that pretty much made the yard and he built a wonderful deck and swing where we entertained all the time. The new house is also odd in that it takes up almost the entire lot so there is no yard at all but has five bedrooms so seemed like he builder was thinking in terms of a family. Also odd is that the only place where they could have a "view" is at the very back of the house and they made it a closet.
It is too bad neighbors can't have any say so. Where I live now it is in an historic district which is a pain to renovate or anything however they do prevent awful things from happening.
Thanks for all the kindness with Liesl. Couldn't get her to eat tonight - she was so upset, starving and agitated she wouldn't let me pick her up and bit me so I'll try tomorrow. Just totally upsetting!

Happy Friday!!! Been up since before 5 a.m. Finally was getting a decent night's sleep to be awakenend by dh telling me to get up--something's burning!!!!! Ye Gods! Awful smell but no smoke and the smoke alarms didn't activate. We quickly checked all around but didn't see anything obvious. Just in case something was smoldering, dh called 911. I will say this for our rural volunteer fire dept--the driveway and street was full of cars in less than 5 minutes. Poor dog kind of freaked with so many strangers running through his house! No problem--I was freaking right along with him! They could also smell the odor. After much searching/checking, they decided it was most likely the emergency coils on the heat pump in the attic burning off dust. It did get pretty cold overnight.
Grabbing me a stiff drink and heading out to my hammock--anyone got any chill pills they'd share????
0 -
LOL junie! THANK GOD it was just a normal thing, and not a fire!!!!!! What excitement...by any chance did any of the HTL firemen show up???? I agree with you about the rural volunteers....when late DH had a heart attack, they showed up in about 2 minutes (we lived in the country)....the first responders lived in a broken down shack of a house down the road...boy did I gain respect for them after that! Sowwy your sweep wuz cut showt (I think Beans has influenced me here! lol), but soooooo glad everything was ok! NOW, don't overdo today...you need to get well! Can someone bring out our hunky firemen and create a fire drink for junie, along with some strong chill pills??????
0 -
Junie, I thought I'd send this fellow to double check just to be safe!
0 -
And I thought these might be able to help!
0 -
OOOOO I think that did it! Now we needs some cold drinks so thing don't get out of hand....PANTS!!!!!

Yikes what a scare! Glad there was no fire. Our house caught on fire when I was in highschool and I'm still very alert to that buring smell. Glad you all are alright and I do think all firemen should look like this. We were so grateful to our firemen we were all over them and they wern't even cute!

Junie....so glad all is well. Congrats Mrs Nice.
I think I am going to have to depart the lounge for a while to calm down. This is more than I can take in the AM.....notice I am not on the thread about getting my mojo back. Hmmmm.
They look ever so much better than the guys in spandex did yesterday. Funny story. This was a party for those of us who volunteered about 10 days ago. Held in a microbrewery. The majority came on bicycles. I walked the 2+ miles each way. They couldn't believe that I would WALK that distance.
On top of the party, I took in Art Walk as the first Thursday of the month. So much fun. One of the funny things I encountered is a gallery show of the work of Francoise Gilot which is kitty corner to the Picasso exhibition at the Seattle Art Museum. She was the mistress (mother of Paloma Picasso) who bailed and got out with her wits intact. Fascinating work.
Glad it's Friday. Have major rides planned for both weekend days. Plus great wine.

I was just typing away... hit one wrong key and it's gone! Too bad, it was probably something really clever...
Oh yeah, I was telling you about my house fire in 1989. I came home at lunch to take a nap but left because I thought I smelled a propane leak. When i got back to my office I thought to call our (only) neighbor and learned that fire dept was there. Live-in boyfriend and I were splitting and I had moved some things to storage already but lost a lot of personal items... which is why I don't like to part with things now. For the longest time I couldn't even think about leaving this house where we moved when our first born was 3 weeks old. I am a Martha Stewart type who puts a lot of love into making our house a home and up until recently I couldn't imagine moving. Right now all I can think of us finding a quiet place in a small community where people walk and when you pass people you acknowledge them but big enough to have some culture... good library, museums and theatre. I'd love something historic but DH likes new and no maintenance. Right now my heart is breaking as I look outside and see this monster of a house being erected 15 feet off our back fence. We have French doors and windows sans window coverings because we used to have a view. When the development first started I wanted to buy the lot and hold it but DH didn't think that made sense. To me it's not about the investment it's about quality of life. I think he gets it now... he was standing in the backdoor staring at it when I got home last night. He finally said to me (after many years of stating he would never leave this town) that we should start thinking about where we might like to relocate and make some short trips to visit other areas. This morning I noticed he was working on a list of repairs we would need to do. In any event, my youngest is thriving in an amazing charter school here and real estate is not moving so I think making plans is more of a psychological escape than a real one... at least for a couple of years.
I love places like Seattle, Portland, and Ashland (love love love Ashland) but I'm not sure what happens with my licensing if I leave the state (probably makes it more complicated). Seems like life has a way of working out the details on its own.
Darn construction workers aren't even cute. Just loud... hammering and yelling all day! Construction workers should be seen and not heard. Where do you get the sexy, quiet ones?
0 -
lordy! I just might start a real fire if one of those guys would show up! LOL at Wahine--if I'd started babbling about the HTL firemen this morning I would have been carted right off to the loony bin!!!
AStorm--so sorry about the construction. I would want to move in a heartbeat if anyone were ever able to build and block my lovely view. At least your hubby is on board with the idea should the opportunity arise.
Gonna grab me a couple of NM's Flame Blazers and return to my hammock. Still a little schitzo so won't get much else accomplished today!!!
Big HUGGGGSSSSS to all!!!

Chrissy, drunk or not I'd take any (or all???) of those firemen! I like it hot!!!
0 -
LOL at EVERYONE'S posts!!!! Boy, everyone sure rallied around and provided all those hunky firemen, and even something to drink! Duh...I KNEW you gals would come through! Junie, now you know you are loved!!!
AStorm, that is really rotten that your view is being taken away!!!! So sorry to hear what you are going though with that. But I need to ask you....where is Ashland? Never heard of it. I love Asheville...but thats on the other side of the country from you, so I KNOW that's not it!
Jaybird, it is SOOOO nice having you back to occupy a bar stool (or hammock, pool float, etc)! Still waiting to see Avery in her halloween costume...bet she was adorable.
Stanzie, Hope you were able to get some food into your baby. I know its breaking your heart, and we all are feeling your pain, and wish we could do something to help. You know we're here for you!
Dee, Where oh where did you go off to? C'mon back!!! HD, now that you got rid of Jackson, haven't heard from you! You must be having too much fun....LOL. Kitty, hope you are doing well. Beans, you are missed too! And Lori, I hope you are having a fantabulous time on your trip! And anyone that hasn't posted for awhile, if I didn't mention you, I am truly sorry!
Just got home....the installers finished the wood flooring at my parents place today...YAY! I will need to do a lot of painting though...moldings,trim,etc. BUT so nice to have something done, that turned out good. OF course our place is a wreck as we have been having things done at the other 2 places. But you all will be happy to know I am taking it EASY this afternoon...and waiting patiently for pau hana time!

Ashland is in Oregon. There is a university, a beautiful park, and a Shakespeare festival. And big old houses with huge yeards.

HellOO????? Where is everyone? I just had to let you know that I finally made the "Heat Wave #2" recipe that someone posted weeks (months?) ago, and it is AWESOME!! I feel like I am having a tropical drink on the beach. Thought it would be fun to finally make it since several of us are going to have below freezing temps overnight and could use a "Heat Wave". This is the one with coconut rum, OJ, pineapple juice, peach schnapps and grenadine.....amazing!!!!
ChEARS! Okole Maluna!!!

I wasted a lot of time today taking and updating photos. Time to do LinkedIn again, and uploaded one of the more informal ones here. Think a bit austere, but will have to do until I grow my hair longer or get more inspired, whichever comes first.
Glad you are hanging in there Beans.... The great news is that you will be done with everything by Christmas. So no active treatment in the New Year.
A Storm....I would keep the French doors etc w/o curtains just to spite them. Not your fault if they don't like the view of you and DH in the altogether!
One thing I will share from the informational interviews. I told the truth about why I wasn't going full gear during the past year. Because if you say something like "personal reasons" you leave them wondering. And breast cancer treatment sounds infinitely better than rehab in terms of whether they could recommend you. And you don't have to hide things down the pike. Just so much easier.
Neither guy blinked an eye when I told them. Fascinating, how far we've come. I think it helped though that I am full of energy and obviously on top of my game. And I could talk about all my cycling events. If I had gone in dragging and obviously suffering from a disability, it would not have been the same reaction. (And on the other side of the table, I would be wondering the same thing.)
Anyway, food for thought, and something to drink to!!!! Firemen.......

hmmm, maybe I should flash them my scary foobs. That ought to make the new neighbors put up window coverings!

Claire- I agree attitude makes a huge difference. I keep trying to tell my teenagers this but it is so lost on them.
AStorm - just so awful about your lovely view. The two times I have renovated I really tried to keep my neighbors in mind because I know how I would have felt but I guess now a days if you don't have to do something most people won't - very sad.
Beanie - Thank goodness the end is getting closer and closer and I guess being finished could be a great birthday present!
Liesl doing a bit better and getting used to her chair... still throwing up but just a little and having energy is lovely!
0 -
Stanzie - so glad Liesl is feeling a little better. It seems like once they start to feel better they get stronger and everything is easier... my pups always seem like they are either fine or completely miserable... maybe they're just being dramatic.
The wiener-dog and I went to visit friends last night... he got to romp and play with a bichon for a couple of hours so he's lethargic today. I'm supposed to be working but I don't want to be in the house so I'm going to the coffee shop to study... maybe check out some Open Houses for research. Or maybe I should go to BevMo now.

DOTD Flaming Spanish Coffee
Here are the ingredients you'll need to make Flaming Spanish Coffee:
- 1-2 ounces 151-proof rum
- 1-2 ounces coffee-friendly spirits or liqueurs, such as Kahlua, Amaretto, Cointreau or Homemade Coffee Liqueur (You can mix and match for a more complex flavor.)
- About 3 ounces brewed coffee
- Enough lemon juice to rim the glass
- Enough sugar, brown sugar or Spiced Sugar to rim the glass
- Several pinches ground cinnamon and nutmeg
- Whipped cream or heavy cream (to taste)
You'll also need some equipment:
- A wine glass, Irish coffee mug or other piece of heat-resistant stemmed glassware
- Two small bowls or plates suitable for rimming the glass
- A long match or lighter
- A fire extinguisher (just in case!) or some fire fighters with hoses drawn...
Using the sugar and the lemon juice (or a liqueur), rim a wine glass, Irish coffee mug or other piece of sturdy, stemmed glassware.
To rim the glass, you'll need two shallow bowls or small plates, each with a larger diameter than the rim of the glass. Put the lemon juice in one bowl (or on one plate) and the sugar in/on the other. Dip the rim of the glass into the lemon juice and then, while it is still wet, dip it into the sugar. The sugar will stick to the rim of the glass. Now, you're almost ready to light your Flaming Spanish Coffee on fire! Before you strike a match, there are a few things you need to do:
- Keep a fire extinguisher nearby. If you've never made a flaming cocktail before, please don't skip this step!
- Move any highly flammable objects away from the area in which you'll light the cocktail.
- Prepare your spices by either unscrewing the caps of their canisters (preferably with a perforated lid for dusting spices over the drink) or by placing them in a small bowl.
- Remove the screw tops from you liqueurs and place them nearby, but in a spot where they won't tip over while your drink is on fire.
- Move your brewed coffee to a spot near the glass.
- Turn down the lights in the room. (It will look more dramatic this way.)
- Pour the 151-proof rum into the wine glass.
- Roll up your sleeves and (if necessary) tie back your hair.
OK, now you're ready to light the drink on fire!
This part is a little tricky, so take a deep breath and keep your cool.
- Tilt the glass at a 45 degree angle. With a long match or lighter, light the rum on fire. Don't be startled if it lights on fire before the fire touches the rum -- this is normal.
- Return the glass to its vertical position and place it on a flat surface. If you're used a match to light the fire, blow the match out.
- With your hand flat and facing down toward the table, hold the stem of the glass firmly between your index and middle fingers. Moving your hand in a circular motion, swirl the flaming rum in the glass to caramelize the sugar.
- Once the sugar is mostly caramelized, sprinkle the ground nutmeg and cinnamon over the drink. (The spices will flavor the drink and add dramatic sparks to the preparation of your cocktail.)
Put out the fire
Quickly and carefully pour the desired liqueurs and/or liquors on top of the cocktail. (Do not pour from too high or the flaming rum may splash out of the glass.) Do not worry if the liquid is boiling at first. It will cool down as you add more ingredients.
Once you have added the liqueurs/liquors and coffee, the glass should be 2/3 full or fuller. Now we are ready to garnish:
After the fire is out, your Flaming Spanish Coffee Cocktail is nearly complete. However, you still have the chance to get creative. You can mix and match the toppings of your choice. Select from the following garnishes:
- Whipped cream or heavy cream
- Ground cinnamon and/or nutmeg
- Grated citrus zest
- Chocolate shavings or a drizzle of chocolate syrup
- A brandied cherry (or a maraschino cherry)
Once you've topped your drink, it's ready to enjoy. Just be careful -- it's probably still very hot!

My Goodness - that is some drink! Have you ever had it? Looks pretty amazing! For my Mom's 75th birthday she went to New Orlenes but unbeknownest to her my other sister and husband and my husband and I also went to surprise her.We all stayed in the same little hotel so we had to hide from them which was very funny and the hotel people thought it was wonderful. We went to Antoine's and had a private room with a balcony which we could watch for them. When they were shown to the room we were all kind of stupid we put on Groucho Glasses. Anyway, my Mom stepped in to the room and immediately backed out saying no this is a private party. It took them three times to get her in. Somehow she didn't think it was strange for 4 adults to be standing there in a nice resturant with Grocho Glasses on.
OK, so you are wondering why I'm telling this? Well they had this signature after dinner drink which the waited showed us how to do it and we actually took notes not that any of us remember where they might be. The drink was many different layered liquors that were heated and then an orange rind that was peeled into a long coil was set on fire and into the drinks.
Whatever they were they were amazing and about as complicated as the above. Anyway, afterwards we then got a private showing of all the old costumes from years past of Mardi Gras.
Anyway, this just reminded me of this.
