    Hi gals!

I have a quick few minutes between stirring my first batch of Chex mix......yes, I finally got with the program and am actually taking charge of the tradition.  I really thought about involving the whole family like Wendy suggested but they're not going to be here for long and thought maybe the little guys and I would start our own tradition.  Besides, I didn't want them to see the tears as I mixed it up.  Amazing how a good cry releases the stress and turmoil.  So if that's what you need today (and that includes you too Pat and your Mom) just go ahead and do it!!!  Guaranteed to work wonders.  So when it's finished, I'll have plenty to share under your table Wendy, or did we decide we're meeting under Jackie's table now?  You know I can't keep things straight anymore!  LOL

Thinking of you today Kater and hoping your surgery went well!  Hang in there and just relax and heal!  I hope to hear a report from your corner of the world soon.  Hugs, dear sister.

I think I am finally done with the shopping and after I charge up the digital camera I bought my step-dad, I will be done with the wrapping!  YEAH!

This evening we will be having Christmas with Dave's daughters and my son and family will be rolling into our house.  They'll be here all day tomorrow so we'll need to find something fun to do....maybe the Children's Museum and Chuckee Cheese.  Sunday it's Christmas with Dave's mother and sister.  Monday my step-dad is rolling for Christmas Eve service and of course my son and his family will be here for Christmas day but will leave the day after Christmas.  Once it starts, it's non-stop until after the holiday.  Quite a change from last year's holiday season!

I hope everybody has something to do on Christmas or some place to go.  I'm serving Christmas dinner about 1:00 that day at my house!  Come on down, over, or up if you're going to be alone!  :-)

Blackjack, I think Wendy and Susan both gave you great advice.  You should have active participation in decisions concerning your health and type of treatment.

I had dinner last night with Ginny.  She's actually having Christmas at her house today in the midst of all the turmoil because her son and daughter are leaving for Florida tomorrow.   She's such an inspiration!  She will be having her surgery this year, which works well with their insurance, but I'll let her tell you all about that when she pops back on.

Well, time to stir some more.  Wish you were here, Pat, I'd put you in charge of stirring this every 15 minutes.  :-)

I'll pop in later this afternoon for another quick Hello before the mad rush begins.  Hope there aren't a lot of you who are frantically finishing last minute shopping!

Hello girls!  Just thought I'd introduce myself, as I'm from Chicago and was recently diagnosed with IBC with liver mets.  I'm 38, live on the northside of the city, have two fabulous kids and a wonderful husband, and I'm trying to keep a positive outlook on things!   My kids are so excited about Christmas -- just wish I didn't have a mound of presents to wrap!

Anyway, hope you are all doing well!

Just a quickie girls that I wanted to share with you all, and especially you Rita...

Last night I was making kolachki's (sp????) using my Mom's recipe that she had written down on a little card (more about that later).  I've made them before, just a different recipe.  Well...I filled 2 huge trays and put them in the oven at 375 for 30-40 minutes.  I thought that was quite high and long, but my Mom was one terrific baker.

Yep...you guessed it.  Smoke detector going off, DH screaming from upstairs that he sees smoke...black crisps.  While I am sitting at the kitchen table (at...not under as DH was home), crying and babbling...the phone rings.  It is my sister, crying and babbling...that HER kolachki's, using Mom's recipe...spread out and oozed all over everything into one big great big mess and were totally ruined.  Seemed in HER copy of the recipe...WAY too much butter.

And then we both started laughing thru our tears....my Mom was one sharp cookie herself and my sister and I have never had an exactly close relationship.  And at least this Christmas and hopefully for many to come, things have now shifted.  We think Mom did this on purpose so we would have to get together and make these stupids things as a team.  Interesting.  A new tradition, Rita!!!

I had an idea many years ago (well...maybe 15) to get a recipe box and have Mom write down all her favorite (and mine!) recipes so that I would have them forever...in her handwriting.  Something you guys might want to ask your Mom for, or your Grandma or something to do for your own children.  I so treasure my stained, dirty little cards.  Sometimes I think I should have laminated them but you know what?  Nope.  I love them just the way they are.

Oh Wendy!  I wish I'd have thought to have my Mom write out our favorite recipes in her own handwriting.  What a true gift you have!  Loved your story!  You know, they always say that things happen for a reason.  I tend to agree with that, but sometimes it takes a LONG time before you really know that reason!  See we each have new traditions this year!  Is this an older or a younger sister?

The Chex mix is done.  It's edible but not as good as Mom's.  I'll try again next year and maybe I'll get if right!  LOL

Welcome Sue.  Please come right in.  Tell us all about yourself and how they are treating your cancer and make yourself right at home.  How old are your kids?  I wish I was closer so I could give you a big HUG!  You are so young to be fighting this beast and my heart goes out to you.  If you've read back through any of the posts on this thread, you already know that our motto here is "Illinois Gals Are Tough" and we've been proving it over and over.  I know it's hard to keep a positive attitude about all this but I do sincerely believe that positude attitudes are assets in this journey.  So if you need to vent, have a pity party, or just express all the fears and turmoil associated with this journey, just come back here and we'll listen.  We've all been there and we understand.....and if you don't need to do that, just come back anyway.

I just organized two kitchen cupboards in search of lids for plastic containers.  How in the heck can you have dozens of containers and only a handful of lids????  I finally tossed out all the unmatched pieces and decided that I should make a trip to the store again before Christmas dinner if I expect to send left-overs home with everyone!  LOL  If anyone has the solution to this....send it my way because my system sure isn't working!

Laundry is beckoning me!  My break is over!  Catch you later.

For some reason I'm having trouble logging on to thi site again, and even more trouble posting. Dh installed new version of aol, so I suspect it is McAfee security as it was before.

I will make it short, and hope it goes through.

Hope everyone is well, and I wish the very best holiday to each of you.

Pat   Thinking of you and your mom everyday, and offering prayers for you both. A big hug envelops each of you, and I'm hoping you have a peaceful day.

    Sue -

Welcome! Glad you stopped by. Your upbeat attitude will get you through all this! Hoping you and your family have a wonderful Christmas! Our motto here is: Illinois Girls Are Tough!

    Wendy -

Although it's bitter sweet...cute story! It's nice that you and your sister have each other. It's ironic you should suggest the recipe idea...my dh's Mom died from bc. In her hospital bed, she spent the last week of her life, with a typewriter (yes, a typewriter, this was many years ago) on her bed tray. She typed 15 pages - all of my dh's favorites...home-made mac & cheese, barbequed ribs, lemon bars, etc. Dh and I use it all the time! It's sad, but really a nice thing to have. She died before I had a chance to meet her as dh and I had just started dating and she was living in AZ at the time of her dx. But...dh always says she would have loved me!  :  (

    --------------------------

Well - it's the home-stretch! All you elves better get your butts moving' - Santa will be here before ya know it!

    Have a great day!

    Hi:

Will this day ever end?  My students are playing Scrabble, sucking on their hundreth candy cane and I am here typing to you.  I never do that sort of thing, but that is what the last day before the holdidays is all about when you teach 8th grade!

Dear Sue, thanks so much for coming into the thread.  I live in Northbrook which is pretty close to the north part of the city.  My daughter lives in Lakeview and my other daughter lives in Evanston.  You sound strong, although the women  here stick by each other in times of strength and in times of fear, so keep coming back.  Tell us about yourself.  It sounds like your kids are young.  Of course they are excited about the holidays!

Wendy, I remember those kol---Spell?????, from when I was little.  You must be Polish.  My Polish aunt made them for me.  Then of course you don't need toe Polish to love them!  Were you able to in fact eat any?

Laura, you are sounding very happy.  Rita, you are sounding VERY BUSY!  Thanks, Rita, for the update on Ginny.  WHEW!  All the news!

Michele, I am excited about your hair.  I never had curly hair until I had chemo and it was a whole new hairdo  challenge for me.  Update that avatar as I want to see it.  Speaking of avatars, how do you get them on?

Love to everyone else.  I have to go.  The bell is about to RING!

Hi Sue....Welcome!  We truly hate that you have to be here, but you are so welcome.  And we are tuff!!  Well, I have on occasion sat under my kitchen table but that is another story and you are welcome there as well.  And I agree...you are much too young.  Heck...we are all too young.  And you have small children.  But you are on a good chemo protocol and girls with liver mets live a long, long time and with all the new drugs we are slowly turning this beast into a chronic disease.  You will be added to my prayers! I lived on the NW side for years until we moved out to South Elgin in 2001.  Whereabouts are you?  If you want, PM LauraGTO with some info such as address, phone # BD, date of Dx etc. No pressure, just if you want.

Rita...so that's where all my containers went!  I could only find the lids yesterday and had to buy a bunch more.  Maybe we should have swapped!!!

Laura...hmmmmm, let's see...would your MIL have loved you?  Honey, I've never met you personally but your huge heart shines out in your lovely smile and in every letter you type.  Your DH is quite correct.  She would have loved you, like a daughter and then some.

Kater still can't log on....she is recovering nicely at her Mom's today, asking after you Ginny and sending Pat hugs.  I will keep you informed....

Nope...I'm not Polish.  German, Austrian, Hungarian with a little Yugoslavian thrown in for good measure.  My Dad came here from Yugoslavia was he was 8 months old and my Mom came from Austria-Hungary (it was one country at that time) when she was 8.  My sister is older by 9 years.  I am the surprise baby, born when my Mom was 40.  And the boy my Dad had been waiting for.  SURPRISE!

Well Pat....it is foggy here but not too cold.  Snow is coming Saturday night with a blast of arctic air.  You and your Mom keep warm and know that we think of you often and are sending lots of hugs to keep you warm and cozy.  Wishing you peace my friend, much peace and comfort.  And Hugs and Smiles too.  I remember Pat...every day I remember...to "woooooohoooooo" and that is because of you. And for that I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Julie, Ginny....hope you are doing OK.

    Kats....so...soon another year older, hmmmmm???

Jackie, Blackjack...everybody else...have a wonderful day and a great evening.

I'm a quitter!  I just quit!  No more cleaning, no more cooking, no more packages to wrap!  I'm done except for picking up some dinner rolls on Monday for Christmas dinner.  (No ladies....I know it's shocking but I do NOT make homemade rolls for the holidays!  LOL)

And of course I'll have to get some more containers WITH lids .........such a deal, Wendy!!!

So glad to hear that Kater is doing well after her surgery!  Thanks for the update, Wendy!

Susan...how well I remember those "holiday party days!"  At times they were simply gut-wrenching nightmares!  Now I look back at a few things that happened at some of them and get a real chuckle.  Just think....you're creating memories for your retirement.  That's also a good thing to keep in mind when you have to take the crew to the gymnasium for a school assembly!  LOL

Laura...I KNOW your MIL would have loved you.  We ALL do!

Well, I'm off for a hot shower.  Then I'm treating myself to an hour of down time with my book and cup of coffee and I'm not even going to feel guilty about it!

Everyone have a good evening and a nice weekend.  Wendy's right again.....Kats will soon be another year older.  (and that's GOOD!!!)

Catch you whenever I get a few minutes of computer time.  Thanks smerf for the kind words and the lovely card.

    Yep..that would be me.

    Well...just another short note..

Rita...ohmgod...they have such a thing as "premade rolls"?  Gosh..never knew that (lol).

OK...important stuff.  Tomorrow is DH's BD and I do "10 days o' Tom" as his BD always gets lost in the Holidays so...staring out the window  at Giordanos tonight he noticed that I was not saying much...So I started to talk...

Pat...I am so sorry.  It was probably nothing you wanted to share...

but I shared with DH tonight.  And he sends you hugs, and he said to tell you that he is so sorry for your loss...your loss of TIME.  He said you would understand.  So....Tom sends Hugs!  Sorry for your lost time with family, sorry for your loss of length of life...sorry for your loss...of going, "WoooooooHoooooo" one more time.  I have seen my DH cry only a very few times.  Today would be one.  He wishes you and your Mom peace....

Hugs to everybody tonight.  I guess my DH has been very affected by this beast...more than even I know.  Time to hug him.

Once again....This one's for you Pat..

    WOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOO!

I went to the surgeon yesterday and will be having a bi-lateral

mastectomy on Friday the 28th.  I will be staying overnight for

observation.  Hopefully, I will be back to work in 2 weeks.  All I need now is to get rid of this cold.

Rita and I had a great dinner at Logan's. It's good to talk to someone who has been there and now how it feels.

Well, gotta go. My 2 older kids are leaving to go to Florida..

    Talk to you all later,

WOW!! I haven't posted for about a week and I can't believe how many posts I had to catch up on!! There's no way I'll be able to address everyone, so I'll just update you on my progress and let you all know I'm thinking about you and I really appreciate all of your encouragement and thoughts. For those of you having issues and concerns, you're in my prayers.

I'm recovering well from my surgery and had my post-op appt with my surgeon yesterday - for those of you who are new, I'm 38 and was dx on Nov 30 with breast cancer. I had a bilateral mastectomy last Tuesday and returned home from the hospital on Wednesday, Dec. 12. My recovery is going well - I had a lot of trouble getting comfortable with the drains in when I tried to sleep and spent several nights on the couch. My drains were removed yesterday, though, and I feel like a new woman!! Kiss I drove today for the first time in over a week. I'm still pretty sore at the incisions, but it's bearable.

My surgeon approved the oncologist at a brand new cancer treatment center near my home so I will not need to travel 3 hours for my treatments. My appt with my onc is next Friday. I'm anxious to find out exactly what the treatments will entail and when I start. I'm certainly not looking forward to them, but I know the sooner I start, the sooner they'll be over!

With the timing of my dx, I frantically finished all of my Christmas shopping before my surgery, but I hadn't wrapped one thing. My sister arranged for some of my friends to come over this past Wednesday and they wrapped every single one of my presents for me - I was so touched and had a great time just chatting with the girls. I live almost an hour from the school I teach at so I haven't seen any of my friends since I left before my surgery - we had so much fun catching up on everything.

I'll have a house-full next week as my dh's family is coming from Wisconsin to stay with us. My SIL and MIL will be handling most of the "hostess" duties and I'll pitch in as I feel up to it - they're all wonderful and I'm looking forward to their visit. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday - safe travels if you're on the road!

    Julie

    A couple quick notes:

I saw a post that someone mentioned Effexor helps with the night sweats issue. I was on Effexor as a "preventive migraine" medicine and one of the side effects from it WAS night sweats - BAD! I had a complete hysterectomy 2 1/2 years ago and this med made the night sweats even worse. If it is true that it helps, maybe one counteracts the other --???

Ginny - I'm so sorry about your news. I think you'll be happy with your decision to do a bilateral. The main reason I opted for one is b/c of my mother's history with bc (at 32 and 38) and I was worried about recurrence. My surgeon discussed all of my options with me, but when I told her I wanted a bilateral she said she thought that was the right decision. Even though I'm still recovering from my surgery, I definitely do not regret that decision.

    HUGS to everyone!!!!!

    Morning All....

Well...so much for a nice BD for DH....went to bed fine, woke up at 3AM with the worst cold and with his cardiac meds he can't take the regular cold meds and is afraid to take the "safe" ones...so Mr. Sneezy/Drippy/Coughy will most probably spend the day in bed.  Oh well.....

Julie...so glad you are doing so well and your attitude is great!  The sooner I start, the sooner I will be done?  Wish I had had that mantra a year ago!  You go girl!!!!!!

Ginny....So glad you were able to make your decision and to get everything taken care of this year.  I will be thinking of you on the 28th.

Everybody.....hope all is well with you and you are enjoying this mild weather before the bottom drops out tonight!

Hey Pat....I am "woooohooooing" for you so you just stay warm and cozy and have wonderful dreams today.  Hugs and Smiles!

    SmileMorning Everyone,

I'm here to wish you all a wonderful X-mas and great holiday season.  Lately I have been really tired ?  don't know why , so thought I wouldn't be very uplifting to anyone so just wasn't posting, but I was reading.   We just found out that a second first cousin of mine not only has emphysema but a large tumor in her lung.  She is doing radiation for that and will have 30 txs of it.  Will have to see later how this will work with her dx.

I know it's more superstition than anything, but if things really do come in three's that is all the cancer for this family for quite awhile.  Now that would be a real blessing.

Glad to hear your ok Julie -----  great news.  Keep up the positive attitute.  I think it really helps.

So to all you wonderful Illinois ladies I wish a Beautiful, Satisfying Christmas.

Goes without saying that I wish the same for anyone, anywhere with cancer or anything else the same.

Take care, stay safe, Tom--hurry and get well, and Kats too, and you are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Nice to hear from everybody.  I made it to my two week vacation.  Yesterday was Winter Soltice and supposedly the shortest day of the year.  For me it was very long.  The kids were all hyped from sugar overload and that "Holiday" party was kinda a mess!

Ginny, we will all be watching over you when you go in to surgery and Julie, it sounds like you are in good hands.  THREE hours to get to treatments sounds like a challenge.  Do you have someone to travel with you?

    Hello to everyone else.

Hi Everyone, I would like to wish all the wonderful Illinois Ladies a Happy Holiday and a healthy and Happy New Year. I know that we all have been through a very trying year. Some of us are new bc girls, some old ones, some recently having surgeries and some just getting thought treatments. This site has been wonderful to us new girls. For me this site  has been a blessing with every one's encouraging words and support for one another. This year has been a changeling year  for me to say the least, being newly diagnosed, surgery and then radiation txs. But I have learned a lot about bc through this site and from all the wonderful ladies. I thank you for your support and kind words. I know 2008 will be a very good year for all.

My kids are finally home from college and they loved their new room's. I am going to enjoy them until they have to go back. I am off to finish cooking for Monday. I have 35 relatives coming for dinner. I am so happy that my son ,the chef is home and he can help!!

I know we are all so busy now and may not be able to post...wishing all a good noc. Santa is watching all of you girls.....so be good.

    Laura.............

I thought I was all done here but one look at Buddy Love and it was all over.  What an adorable picture........and all that white makes Buddy and Santa look so good.  If Buddy's hair was just curled around his sweet little nose he and Santa would look like twins.

Ok---now you know only another dyed-in-the-wool animal lover would be making these crazy comparisons..

I hope you tell Buddy Love that I bet he has managed to wiggle everyone's holidays up several notches.  Sure has mine.

I'm dying of cute, cute, cute !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Once again........HAPPY, HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND A SPLENDID NEW YEAR.........

    Love to all,

Laura-Buddy Love is adorable! My Buddy (Golden Retriever) would not have posed for such a nice picture. He would have been pulling Santa's beard off and licking his nose Tongue out

    Michele

Oh yeah, I got my hair trimmed yesterday. My hair has changed again. The back has alot of wave, the top seems really curly, and the sides, well, I'm not sure. I'm happy to have the hair, but I'm really not sure what to do with it. This new avatar is pre-haircut.

Michelle, you look adorable!  I found that the hair was slow coming in at first and then it grew SOOOOOOOO fast!  Mine is still curly.  I have not cut it yet and I should as it is so curly that it is hard to manage. I just hate to cut it as losing it was awful and I never bonded with the wig. Isn't it amazing how your hair air dries in five minutes!  Now I am back to 25 minutes blow drying it and trying to tame it.

Laura, awhile ago you posted a gallery (photgraphy) and it showed samples;  one of which was fairies.  I want to send it to my daughter.  Can you remember it?  I  can sift through all the posts, but your memory of it would be a great deal more time effective.

    Happy Holidays!

    Hi everyone,

I'd just like to check in quickly and say Happy Holidays to one and all. All three kids have now arrived, and we're cooking and wrapping in preparation for the Big One! Dh is turning 70 tomorrow, and it is a little overwhelming to think about. He's healthy and active, so I say ignore the numbers, and just keep on keepin' on.

I've been working with aol to fix my problem so I hope this gets through. They say bc.org is an insecure site, so that's why I haven't been able to post since we downloaded the 9.1 version last week. I know there is a thread where the gals are complaining about lack of security, but I had thought it was nice because all can read posts even if they don't feel ready to start posting themselves. Do any of you ever have similar problems? It's really frustrating!

Ginny   Thinking about you, and hoping the best for a quick recovery from surgery.

Pat  Thinking of you always, and sending hugs and smiles to you and your mom.

Kater   Hope you are feeling well after your surgery.

Michele You look so good with your short hair, or with a baseball cap!

To all  Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!

Wow!  I've got a few minutes to pop on as my son and family have gone to his Dad's for Christmas.  I have read piles of books, worked puzzles, played Cootie, been to Chuckee Cheese and taken my grandsons to see Santa.  We've had fun but Grandma is pooped!!!!  They will be back tomorrow evening.

Michele...cute hair!!!!!  When we stopped in Metropolis, I won $45 but Dave hit a jackpot for $690 playing a nickel machine.  It was really nice because the casino was not busy at all and you could play just about any machine that you wanted.

Ginny...hope you had a good early Christmas with your kids!

Laura...love the Santa shot with Buddy Love...so cute!

Smerf..glad your family has arrived.  Enjoy them!  As for that big birthday, you are so right.  Age is only a number!  :-)

Pat..I hope you are snuggled in tonight.  It's cold and windy out here in the country.

Mary Jane...hope you've got those hundreds of packages wrapped and are ready for the big day.

JanClare...haven't heard from you in awhile, but I certainly wish you and yours a Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy new year.

Connie...I bet the excitement is flying at your house!  Your children are adorable!

Kats...Happy Birthday and Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Jackie and Blackjack...so glad you've joined us!  Have a wonderful holiday!

Julie...Glad to hear that you're doing well.  Merry Christmas!

Kater..hope you're snuggled in, too and feeling pretty good after your surgery.  Hugs to you!

Wendy..Thanks for all the smiles and your special note.  You're just super!  Hope hubby is feeling better so you can both enjoy the holidays.

Susan...Enjoy both the holidays and your vacation!  I can remember looking forward to the vacation from school as much as I did the holidays.

Nicki and Mazy and anybody else I missed..Ho Ho Ho Merry Christmas!
