Today was the kick breakfast for this years Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk. I missed the breakfast last year but this year I was on of the speakers. I spoke as a pacesetter (someone who raised over $1500 last  year). They listed a total of 17 pacesetters on the board… 3 of them were from our Illinois Ladies team.

As a team last year we did really well. The teams that raised more money where much larger or had corporate sponsorship. We really did an amazing job and are one of the top teams. I know some of you can't make it this year but you can still fundraise for the team.

I'm also looking for more team members. So far we just have 3 (with a few other that have yet to sign up but said they will). Remember the sooner you post the more time you have to fund raise.

There are also Balloon fests every year in Macomb and in Lincoln.  It's so fascinating to see them all take off!

HI Girls...long time since I have been here. I know that there are many new girls here,so welcome to the Illinois ladies were you will find lots of support, friendship and a wealth of information. There is life after bc, remember to take one day at a time for yourself. Be kind to your body and most of all rest.

I have some very sad news to share with you all. Laura GTO's husband passed away suddenly yesterday. Some of the older girls here know Laura for artistic flare and bubbly personality. Services for her dh are pending at a later date. Please keep Laura and her family in your prayers. If you would like to send her a card she is on the BC list or you can pm me and I will give it to you.

Remember to be healthy...be happy and hug the ones you love.

Had my surgery (lx x2 oncoplasty right, reduction left) on Tuesday, overall that went really well. Recovering. Got path results today tho- found 2.2 cm invasive in the one area they thought was benign but removed while in there, and found 1cm invasive in tissue taken from the left during reduction. The one known area was taken fine! So in shock and trying to figure it all out. Meet with bs/Rosen and ps/Madry in next week or two and then plan. Probably dmx tho in the next few weeks. Not what I was expecting at all! katey2z glad someone else with Madry and likes him!

My sympathy to Laura.  It is never easy to lose someone, but even harder when they pass unexpectedly.

Aviva, I always thought that BC was a series of surprises.  The truth is sometimes you don't know for sure what you have until they get in there and look at the tissue, despite all the diagnostic tools and biopsies.  Hang in there!

For the ladies who went through chemo, did your nails hurt?  My fingernails hurt so bad and I wondered if this was related to the possibility of the nails falling out, or is this related to neuropathy?  I will see the onc on Thursday but thought I'd check here.

My thoughts & sympathy are with Laura and her family.

Aviva - welcome to a great group of wonderful supportive ladies!  Sorry to hear about your path report but I can tell you from experience you are in great hands.  The 2 surgeons you have are the best in the area - I can tell you from experience! Not only are they excellent at what they do, they are good people too.  Best of luck to you!

TwoHobbies I remember when my nails started to hurt. I told my onc… and she told me that my nails were going to lift, and boy did they along with my toenails. I didn't lose any fingernails but did lose a few toenails. My podiatrist explained to me that you don't want to expose your toes or fingers to any trauma because that will make it worse. Of course you have to walk and in my case I did use my hands a lot (looking at my post count you can tell I was typing like crazy) so maybe that's why I got it so badly.

This is the reason why many gals ice their hands and feet. Not sure if you start it now if it will prevent it from getting even worse but you really do need to keep them pretty cold.

That's really sad aboat Laura's DH. Frown

Thanks, Lago.  I'll ask the MO what to do.  I have been trying not to bash them or use them to open things, but I do type.  I'm not sure I can ice because I have Reynaud's, which causes the circulation to shut down when they are cold.  My toenails are not bothering me at all.  They are polished but my fingernails are not.  Perhaps I will polish my fingernails in case there is a chance that could help.

Ok wouldn't it hurt like hell if they come off?  What do you do?

Twohobbies Lago and I seem to both have nail issues with our chemos--lifting the nails off the bed, lossing some and some turning black along the way. Two of my nails are still growing off the beds so I have to keep them very short cuz they'r all crookedy, and my toenails grew back kind of sideways, I never knew about the freezing then. But my nails now (except for the 2) are strong and can grow like crazy (never happened before) so.....

Healing is the journey.  The destination is yourself.  The full recognition of all
the different aspects of yourself—your joy, your sorrow, your pain,
your pleasure—all lead you to the source of who you are.  Only by
having intimate contact with this source can you experience the fullness
of your life.  Only by fearlessly looking within can you embrace the landscape
of your life and open yourself completely to all the love
and compassion that lives inside you.

Prayers for Laura and her loved ones.  Good time to reflect on our never really knowing when our time may come, or how.  Hoping this journey for Laura is not too difficult though it will be sad.  Many wishes for her and her family as they face this challenge in their life.

    Peace and love

Thanks Jenn for the confirmation on the good Docs, that helps...and thanks others for your words of support.  The PS said he has a cancellation next Friday, so if they can coordinate schedules things might move that fast.  Wont get too attached to the newly created girls I guess!

camillegal I don't even want to talk about how my toenails look. My nails never did return to normal but my fingernails are passable. ONe of my large nailbed on my toes is ruined. Bumpy nail.

Twohobbies I had one large toenail that was so lifted it had to be removed… not that hurt a bit but not as bad as you think. The other couple of toenails that fell off I didn't even realize. It was winter so I was wearing socks and boots. I couldn't get my feet into most of my shoes because the pressure on the nails was not comfortable due to the soreness. Wore workboots for my last chemos and after. Once the nail was gone and the pain stopped I was back in normal shoes. Hope you don't get it in your toes.

Some of my fingernails and toenails turned gray.  I forgot all about that until just now.  They're back to normal!  Hooray!  Funny how you notice the bad and ignore the good!

Lago, I guess I shouldn't buy too many dresses for fall.  Workboots and dresses, a new look! Timbuktu, at this point I'm hoping for gray or black other than falling off.  Nail polish covers gray and black!

Did I mention today I hate chemo?

Hi Aviva - so sorry to hear about your path report.  I had a BMX in late June.  I had different surgeons, but I think we both have bs from Northwestern.

I am also from Algonquin.  If you have any questions, or need anything, please let me know.

TwoHobbies:  My nails hurt like hell, but I never lost them.  Plus, I typed like mad on this site and for work.  Never iced.  Always had mani/pedi's even during chemo.  I think some of us are predisposed to losing them. Not sure. I guess I was lucky.

Life is never going to give up on you because there is something important for you to do.  One of the primary purposes and processes of life is the development of character.  Your character—your nature, the distinctive qualities of your essence, what makes you you—is developed through experience.  If you do not understand that character development is an important process of life, you may be tempted to give up when things get rough. . . . When life detects that there is an opportunity for you to advance the nature of your character, it will send the perfect situation and people your way.  Your job is to respond to everything in a manner that develops and strengthens your character.
