Curveball, I can understand about the downsizing, you're right about finding places to put everything. I've collected so much over the years, I don't envy you. But when it's all finished, time to celebrate and enjoy your new digs! A nice STEAK, some champagne to wish you well and something sweet (to wish you only sweet memories) to START your new life there!

@2TA, you think I've got problems ?!WinkMy mom will soon be moving from her home for the last 30 years into a new apartment in a retirement community. Her new place isn't 1/3 smaller, it's half the size of this house. We both went to a seminar at another retirement community last winter to hear a lady speak about downsizing. Turns out this same lady works for the community my mom is moving to, and is available to help the new residents decide what furniture & so on to keep from their former home and how to arrange it in the new space. She came here last week and measured my mom's furniture and will send a floor plan sometime next week with her suggestions.

But I'm not moving in there, so I get to figure out how to downsize all by myself. Tongue Out

Hi Curveball, I understand what you're going thru with the downsizing. Have been investigating CCRC's (Continuing Care Retirement Communities) for my parents as Mom's Alzheimer's is getting too difficult for my Dad to take of by himself. Many of those places offer that service too. Whenever we check a place out, my dad is already trying to determine how his furniture will fit into the floor plan. Most places will require he downsize by half. I wish I had a crystal ball to have SNEAK PEAKS to see how everything will turn out. (For other things in life too)

oh, dear, I must have been off searching for a snack. Something low carb for sure.  Let's get this thread rolling again. Although, it's such a busy month with the weather finally turning nice and my DD is graduating HS in two weeks from today. I promise, I'll be back though.

Well I haven't been around this thread much. Recently I don't seem to be able to come up with a new word. Also I have to confess I have been feeling a bit stressed out for the last few weeks. I think it's mostly that there are a lot of loose ends in my life right now. I need to agree on dates and get contract signed with the builder, need to choose materials to be used, need to finish moving my stuff, etc etc etc. Plus, I got scan results that were not as good as I or my onc were hoping. My onc has changed my meds as a result--the new one means I will need to give myself a shot three times a day for the next week. If I don't have a bad reaction to the medication I hope I then get to switch to the time release form, which only needs one shot per month and maybe I won't have to give it to myself. Ugh! My stomach is one big knot thinking about sticking myself.

Next time I am down at my house I will buy a string trimmer to cut the lawn. The grass is so tall now that if I had it baled I could build myself a little shack in the back yard. Well, not really, but it's getting pretty sloppy looking. It's probably too tall to mow unless I rent a lawn tractor, and that makes me almost as nervous as giving myself a shot. I went to get self-injection lessons and did give myself one shot of sterile saline while the nurse was there, just to make sure I wouldn't faint or anything....but I've never driven a lawn tractor.

Curveball, wishing the moving and all the settling in were over for you! Is there a nice young man, maybe high school age that you could pay a little bit to have it done for you? Might not be worth the effort if it's so high and he would appreciate the extra cash!

Oh, perfect word! I was sitting here looking at the threads, and I felt a little shake. Turns out we just had a baby earthquake but the whole house groaned. It was only a little baby 2.0, but we're sitting on the epicenter. I didn't even do my usual, "run out the door before i think" routine!

@2TA almost everything is out of storage now. About all that's left is some items I plan to donate and my computers and financial records. I don't want to take those to the new place until I'm in residence. If it looks like it's going to be a while until I can get in, I think I'll see if the storage place has a smaller unit available. No sense paying for a room big enough to store a whole house in when that's all that's left. My niece recently moved to OR to start a new job. My sister and her husband will be coming up in a truck toward the end of the month to bring her little son and all her things from southern CA to her new place, and to take some items from my mom's house down to her, so I'm hoping I can get my BIL to help me with the last few items, the ones that are too big to fit in my car or too heavy for me to move by myself. My new place is between here and my niece's, so it won't be very much out of their way.

I rememer those itty bitty earthquakes. I used to live in the SF Bay Area and I remember one about the same size as the one you just had, that woke me up in the middle of the night. It felt as if someone had hauled off and kicked the bed frame. Then the next day, I heard on the radio that there had been a "temblor" during the night.

One good thing, I went to a local "green" building materials supplier yesterday, and they have three or four big sheets of solid-surface countertop material which I think are enough to do my kitchen counters. So maybe I can shave a little bit off the cost of the remodel.

So love reading about everyone's life and so appreciate when you all SHARE your lives. So many friends I haven't actually met (yet).

Wow I haven't been here in like forever! We are in Prague now, Czeck Republic.....lots of flooding, but the river is finally receding a bit. There is a National Emergency here...we found out the night before we left Paris, and I contacted the hotel and they said we would be ok. But omg the news crews and all the people on the bridges yesterday...very sad as a lot of historic places were underwater, and there were some deaths. But we are fine. My 96 and 92 yo parents walked to the Old Town Square with us today and its over 45 min walk for us, when walking fast. Then seeing the sights, and walking back. We leave for home tomorrow, but will come back here, we really love it. OK....a word....hmmmmmm...... MY shape has not gotten any better on this trip, even though we walked tons in Paris (and the Eiffel Tower at night is awesome), and walked tons here, they have such good bread, beer, etc., that there was no way to lose weight!!! Hi to everyone!~

@2TA, the countertop material is made of recycled paper, bamboo fiber and a water-based resin. It's called Eco-top, and the remnant pieces I saw are an off-white shade called Ivory. This is the only recycled product I know of that comes in such light colors. I am thinking of using a similar product for the walls in my shower enclosure too.

@wahine, have a good flight! It sounds like you have really enjoyed your trip.

Sounds like an awesome countertop, Curve....I will try to remember to look that up when I get home! Hope everything is going smoothly. Yes, this was a good trip, and trying to wash our hands often, so we don't pick up a ton of germs!Especially while traveling tomorrow....will try to stay well. This was such a short trip though, last week at this time we were still at home! I need to get back home to my DD1 though, as she had surgery while we were away, and it IS cancer....so my DD2 drove 12 hrs from TX to be with her after surgery and help with the kids, etc. Its awful enough to have that, but when we are out of the country and feel so helpless, well its been pretty rough. We get home around midnight and my DD2 has to leave early the next morning, so will just get a quick hi-bye with her.

That does sound like a wonderful countertop, curve. I'm jealous, as my kitchen could use a makeover.

What a wonderful trip, Wahine. I have a cousin from Texas that live in Prague. I'm sure your heart is at home with your daughter though. I hope they caught her cancer early.

I'm looking forward to summer starting here (it's still chilly). We bought season passes for Summerfest "The World's Largest Music Festival". I'm hoping to see some great bands and drink a few beers. Check out the line-up here   http://summerfest.com/summerfest-lineup-2013  Who would you see?

Hmmmm.....I would try to see the Eagles, REO Speedwagon, and Foreigner, for sure. Lots of others that I like too. Quite a lineup! I'd prolly just go from stage to stage, and stand up, would prolly be hard to get seats, Bet the beer will be flowing!! We've enjoyed the Czeck beers, and one that surprised us was "Budweiser", as its a local beer, not affiliated with the US Budweiser at all. Hope your weather is nice when Summerfest is on!

do you have a very old kitchen wahine? My guess is the one in my place dates back to the late 1970's, if not earlier. The flooring is an avocado green and harvest gold pattern, and the cabinets like none I've seen anywhere recently.

I found a nice flooring remnant at the same supplier--real Linoleum and probably big enough to do both the kitchen and the bathroom, although I may use tile in the bath so I can put a heated floor in there. But I have gotten a few decisions made since Monday and that always tends to improve my mood (compared to having a bunch of dangling loose ends). Plus, the self-injected medicine has turned out not to be as bad as I thought it would be. The first few days were bad, because the stuff came in single-dose glass vials and it was a real wrestling match to break the top off so as to be able to draw the medicine into the syringe (using a special needle to filter out any glass slivers that might have fallen in from the breaking of the vial!!!), and then after the medicine was in the syringe, I had to change to a different needle to inject it. A very little of that procedure was enough for me, so I asked my doctor to re-write the prescription for a multi-dose vial with a rubber top, so no more wrestling match and I don't have to switch needles any more. But I still hope I can get the once-a-month form after next Monday, so my whole day doesn't revolve around the every-8-hours timing of the shots.

And it doesn't just cost cents, but thousands of dollars to pay for college!

(Curve, to answer your earlier question, no, our house is not too old, just about 17 yrs old. Already replaced the kitchen countertops 2 yrs ago (and I do love them), but I always like to see new things that are on the market, so meant to look at the countertops you chose. We are replacing all the windows, then I need to pick out new flooring, as this was a "Parade Home", so they made it LOOK really good, but scrimped in some areas. I am re-doing the front landscaping too, gradually, as I had a landscape architect here a couple of wks ago and she gave me some good ideas.)

Wahine, your house is sounding so beautiful! What is a "parade home"? I've never heard that term before.

Zogo, do you have just the two kids? The concert lineup sounds awesome! So many I'd like to see! Didn't check dates, do more than one appear together? Reminds me of the all-day/evening concerts with several bands together back in the day (late '70's) when I was in college.

Curve, you are so brave! I don't think I could give myself injections! Have phobia about needles. It's about my mom being a nurse, me being sick as an infant, and mom having to give me the injections herself. I think it hurt her just as much, or more, as giving the to me.

About college, it's more like hundreds of thousands of dollars! DD wants to go to me school.... In my mind, it's like a SCANT million dollar$!! Lol! So glad she's made the decision to start at a community college, in a special Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math program there, and they are paying her to research scholarships, internships, and mentor ships for the kids in the program. So hoping she finds a wonderfully generous scholarship for herself. She's also learning the value of money as she wants to live out on her own (she has a free place to live here) and works quite a few hours a week to pay for her independence.

2nd time, a "parade home" here means that a couple of times a year, the realtors and builders show off new homes for sale, and all the homes are open for that weekend, or 2 weeks. They have supplements in the newspapers with the parade routes shown, etc. So they sometimes cut corners if they are running late in having the home ready for showing. Our home and our neighbors home were both the parade homes when new, and they have the same problems with rotten windows, etc., that we have had. Everytime we hire another contractor to do something, they say they have never seen something done the way it is (which is always the wrong way, which is why we have had so many problems)!

And you're right, it is a ton of money to go to college now! My DD1 wanted to pay for some of the costs, and she would stand up to me if I tried to pay for too much. I was so proud of her! (well I still am proud of both of my DD's). But this one just got a cancer dx and so its been very hard here. While I was gone was when she had surgery, and it was diagnosed, so my other DD drove 10-12 hrs to come here and help out till I got back home. She sees the rads onco tomorrow, so we will know more then.

Many times, I don't understand what life HANDS us. Heard it said that we never get more than we can handle, I am wondering about that. Wahine, please let us know how we can be of help to you. You, your DD's, and family will be in my thoughts and prayers. Sending hugs, love and healing light for all of you.

@2TA, I'm pretty sure that saying about never getting more than we can handle is a paraphrase of a verse from the Bible (1 Cor 10:13) although probably lots of people say it who don't know where it came from. I'm not sure what people mean when they use the paraphrased version. If it was literally true that nobody ever has a problem that's bigger than they can cope with, there'd be no such thing as PTSD or nervous breakdowns. Now I'm stuck! I can only think of one word and no way to get to it in this paragraph, at least not in time for my shot (due in 2 minutes). So I'm just going to say it. The next word is hangs.

Thanks for all the love, hugs, and healing light, Maddy. Sure need all that right now.

One thing we noticed in Prague, was all the graffiti from the gangs. It was awful, as it ruins all those historic bldgs. Our driver said there are even areas where it is allowed, large walls just for that, but they still destroy the historic bldgs, and ruin the beauty without even a thought about it. Plus it costs so much to even try to cover up or remove the graffiti.

Hi Wahine, hope you and your DD are doing well. So nice to get away on your trip, sad the city is full of graffiti. It ruins such pretty buildings and architecture.

Trying to think of a way to "bridge" to my topic. I've been working on getting my parents to move closer to where I live in California. They live in Las Vegas, Dad is caring for Mom with her Alzheimer's but its getting too much for him. Hopefully, they will be moving here within a month or two. Meanwhile, I'm checking out the renovations and trying to determine which furniture to take, which to get rid of. One of the items I would like them to bring is a grandfather clock, the one they got when their first grandchild was born which was for my DD. I was wondering if the GONGS would be too loud for their neighbors (which are on either side of them) but Dad says its not functioning correctly and it's chimes has been silenced.

@2TA, are your parents going to be living in the same city as you? My mom is also in the process of moving to a retirement community. We will be about 80 miles apart when we both get moved, but I will still be the closest child. The next nearer is my sister, two states away, and my brothers both live back east.

I wouldn't worry about the clock, even if you get it repaired. If it's a new building, the soundproofing between apartments is probably pretty good.

It is hard doing so much for our parents (my mom is 86) and getting older ourselves, plus fighting cancer.

Back up the thread a bit...curve, haha, NO! the one "on the way" is not a baby, but graduating HS this week. On the way to college and me on the way to the poor house!

2TA, I've got 3 kids ~ 16,18,20. Got us all season passes for Summerfest even though they won't be seen with their parents I'm sure. I think there are 11+ stages at the event.  Yes, we wander from one to the other and sometimes have to miss a favorite to see another favorite.  When I was much younger, I worked there.

Hope the move will be smooth, Maddy, as that is really hard. When I moved my parents here from HI last summer, they already had a furnished home here, BUT my mom hardly wanted to get rid of anything. Kept the stangest things. She is 92 and my dad is 96, but I guess sometimes you just want EVERYTHING you like, around you. The clock would be so nice to have, even if not working, as I bet its beautiful! And you could try to get it repaired someday. My mom had a cuckoo clock she got in Germany and when her dad was visiting her (many moons ago) it bothered him, and instead of asking her to silence it, he tied the chains up and it never worked again. It didn't have any dings on it, looked perfect.

It's still hard here, trying to take it one day at a time. Thanks for the concern, we have a long road ahead of us.

my mom is in her 80's also. It's a nice new building she's moving into, close to lots of stuff and many services available for the residents. But expensive!! Bring along a gold ingot or two, because it's going to cost you a pretty penny to move in here! But it's nothing to the place my middle aunt says she's thinking about. I'm not sure if that's going to work out, because the place isn't even built yet (at least not completely) and my aunt will be 90 her next birthday.

Darn it, wahine beat me to the punch again. That's what I get for tinkering around with my post until (I think) it's just perfect. It ends up taking so long I might as well be trying to type with one arm in a sling!
