Wahine, hope you're recovering from jet lag and can't wait to see the photos! Are there any natural springs in Hawaii? We have a local spa here where you play in the mud and after you're caked with the stuff, you relax and dry out. Does wonders for the skin but what a mess! That would be a bit naughty to see the crew like that! Wink, wink!

Haha, sounds like fun! We had a neat place on the Big Island, called "warm springs" and a volcano eruption totally covered it waaaaay back, in 1960. I remember we flew to the Big Island when I was young, and we went there, and it was nice as the water was so warm, and it was in a protected area,with fresh water. I wish someone had faked the story of the volcano covering it up, but unfortunately it was true. Made me quite sad to realize no one could enjoy it ever again.
Attempt to Save Warm Springs
During daylight of January 16, lava was approaching popular Warm Springs (for location, see map), a swimming and picnic area along the Kapoho fault at the foot of Pu`u Kukae. Overnight, the flow did not stop, so an attempt was made on January 17 to protect the springs. Bulldozers scraped together a 450-m-long, 1.5-3-m-high rock dike around the north side of Pu`u Kuki`i and Pu`u Kukae. By 1600, lava had reached several points along the dike and an hour later had overtopped it. The futile attempt to save the picturesque recreation site was abandoned. Most of the dike was overrun by 2030. Lava reached the small pool shortly after midnight and slowly filled it

That's a sad story. Lava approaching is something that would freak me out. Moving slowly, yet all powerful at destroying anything in it's path.

Oh I know....and I guess it might creak some noises, I know it has a hissing sound sometimes when it burns grass, etc. At the volcano flow sites, you can get really close to some "vents" where it must be 5000 degrees and blazing red hot...some stoooopid tourists get so close to have their pictures taken...I wonder if they ever fall and get severe burns? In that 1960 flow, my dad was a state representative, and they were on the Big Island for some big event, and there was a slow moving flow of lava that they walked next to, and he stuck a penny into it and broke that clump off with a stick (as it was still hot and moving, so broke off easily), then it hardened with the penny on it, but for years, you could lift the penny off to see its impression on the lava. So awesome, but somehow it disappeared just in the last few years.
It is especially sad when it takes entire subdivisions, just burns all the homes and covers all the land with HARD thick lava. Then you can't use that land for anything for sooooo many years till it breaks down. Not even sure how many years, but LOTS. And of course, the roads get covered, and form a permanent road block.

If I ventured to Hawaii, I would want to crack off a piece of lava to take home as a souvenir.

Nice idea Jane, however if someone takes lava off the islands, bad luck is supposed to follow them. Madame Pele (Goddess of Volcanoes) does not want anyone to take her lava. Can't put lava up on shelves or racks at home if you live outside of Hawaii, as that might cause bad consequences! (Although I imagine a lot of lava goes home with tourists!).

Oh my, I don't need any of that bad juju following me home. If bad things started happening, it would be a stark reality that I should take the lava back!

Good to see you Maddy! How have you been? I don't know what Sheila plans to bring back, but we found out we both love choc covered mac nuts! My DH was looking at a nice Hawaiian shirt but I was shopping elsewhere, and so we never did connect there and he decided not to get it. I just planned a trip to Iceland! But this month we are staying put so we can give our Molly her pills 2x a day, for the heartworms.0 -
Wahine, aren't you the quick one! You're so clever! Did you get a skirt with that shirt? Hope Molly is doing better. Iceland? What time of year? Seems like the polar (excuse the pun!) opposite of Hawaii!
About the chocolate covered macs: DD got a can from a student when they went on a trip to Hawaii. DH ate almost the whole thing and it wasn't pretty in my house! So, had DH order some (it was considerably cheaper to order 4 cans, which he did), I even got to have a couple. They are so yummy!0 -
Oh, I have never seen the choc covered mac nuts in a can! We found some good li hing sweet ginger, and my DH took some to his friend here, and now he is hooked and found a source online to order it from. There are so many foods that HI has, that you can't get here. No I didn't get a skirt, and he didn't get a shirt, but a friend of ours plays in a Scottish band and sometimes they wear kilts.0 -
The nuts were good, we had milk choc. I would have preferred dark choc but the original ones were milk. Never heard of the ginger, need to google it. Does your friend play bagpipes? I think that would take a lot of SKILL to do.0 -
We love the dark chocolate better, so we always bring back some dark chocolate mac nuts too! Yes, our friend (was his boss actually) can play the bagpipes too, plus he used to sing in a regular band. When we would go and see him play, he got silly and would refer to me as "Hilo Kathy". I also had hired his band to play at my DD2's wedding, and they were awesome.0 -
I think dark chocolate has a silky taste, love, love, love it! Bagpipes at the wedding - how awesome! A friend had bagpipes play when they walked down the aisle together after they were married.

OK, back to chocolate! We can get a nice big dark chocolate bar and split it along the lines so we can share it! (Did you know I was a candy rep for Nestle Candy in the past? I had TONS of candy then!)0 -

Wahine, funny that now I have bold and yours is gone, not funny, it sucks! I asked about the candy suggestion because years ago I applied for a job as a systems analyst for a food company (it was fast food if I remember), they said the employees were the first ones to test the new items just before they went public. Didn't get the job or the extra pounds! Sales rep for a chocolate candy? How did you keep the product from melting?0 -
Following special diets makes resisting some yummy things hard. But on low carb, I can have extra dark chocolate and macadamias are even on the list. It's such a small world looking at your story. I have a friend that recently got a job as a chocolate sales rep. Then yesterday, I went to a taste testing at a marketing company and tried sweeteners in coffee. It paid me a Visa card w/ $450 -
I wish I could have tried the coffee sweetener, Jane....awesome you got $45! My "bold" came back....during the night last night I think they were working on things here, as ALL the options disappeared for awhile, just was a posting box with nothing at the top.
I reordered candy for over 350 stores (convenience, plus WalMart, KMart, etc) and it was a PART-TIME job, but lots of perks. They sent us to the beach, etc, as our division always won the contests. I sold the special display bins, etc., and got everything into most of my stores. I pulled out-of-date or close to out-of-date candies, (which were still good), so we got to keep them. We had them organized by type and by exp date, at home! lol. Finally my kids friend said to please stop sending candy home with them! My youngest DD took ballet so she could eat all she wanted to and not gain weight. She discovered "Chunky" bars, which is now her favorite (she is in mid 30's now) and most of her friends have never heard of the Chunky candy bar! (If we got a ton of esp good candy that needed to be pulled, I would quickly drive home and drop them off, otherwise if I disposed of them at the store I had to mark or cut each one).0 -
Wahine, it was SO very nice of you to give those candy bars rides home. lol. I have lots of different favorites from the past (KitKat, Snickers, Butterfinger, frozen Milky Way), but after my research over the last few years, I confidently consider sugar a poison. I'm learning lots about these alternative sweeteners and it was fun to taste test them.0 -

Darn, Wahine, that you didn't have to return the perfectly good sweets and so nice of you to share. Sounds like a sweet job! I need to kick the sugar habit, but my sweet tooth has such a hold on me. I think I'll be all dried up before sugar doesn't have a hold on me! (Awkward sentence, didn't know how to make the word fit in better).
Edited to add: DRIED was in bold when I was typing, when I submitted, it didn't appear in bold. Hmmmm. Strange! Also, appears in bold when I edit, but it turns to normal when I post. Cray, cray!0 -
