New Want To Play A Word Game

wishing we could spend a little of your rivers and streams this way, we are in desperate need of rain and the snow would be melted by the time it reaches us. Hearing about the drought plans are scary.
0 -
@2TA, scary is right. I used to live in San Jose. Did you see the picture last week in the NYT of a car on the bottom of a dried up reservoir? That reservoir is near where I used to live, and the car looks old enough to have been there since those days (I lived there until 1982). I wonder how & why it got there. Maybe it had big dents in it, or perhaps it stopped running and the repairs would have cost more than the car was worth.
0 -
Curve, I didn't see that story but it is a wow moment for sure.
Maddy, I'd send you water if I could. It's supposed to be above zero this week so our many feet of snow is going to melt and we will be awash in too much water. Flood warnings have gone out.
I saw some birds today, I think they are crazy to be coming home this early. Yet there they are trying to build NESTS in this crazy weather. I'll have to get my DH to take the big wreath off the top of the house before they start building in there again. We've had to leave it up a couple times till the babies had flown the nest because mama bird decided the wreath would make a good home.
0 -
hi ladies! Been trying to think of a word for nests but haven't been successful.
Curve, am glad you're having company and getting out a bit. What's the status of the kitchen upgrades? Didn't know you used to live in San Jose, have a dear friend there, one brother lives in Menlo Park. I used to live I San Diego (La Mesa and El Cajon), went to SDSU, lived on campus.
Red, how has the weather been up? It's been hot here, wouldn't be surprised if families pitched tents in their back yards this weekend it's been so pretty. Did hear rain is in the forecast next week. Yay!
And about birds: I filled the hummingbird feeder outside my kitchen window, where I do dishes and prepare food. I love watching them up close. I bleached a bathroom earlier and opened the window to ventilate. There was a beautifully colored bird that was blue (not a blue bird), it was so pretty and I enjoyed spying on it.
0 -
@2TA, Do you have a bird-bath in your garden as well as the hummingbird feeder? I think I read somewhere that placing a stone or two in a birdbath attracts butterflies. It gives them somewhere to land so they can drink without getting soaked and unable to fly. Then you would have a "Three-B" garden: blooms, birds, and butterflies.
I wish you had gotten a picture of that bird too. I wonder what it was. I assume you know common blue species like jays and it wasn't any of those. As far south as you are, it could have been a visitor from Mexico or parts south.'
@RedReading, how did your rads go? I had the second infusion of doxil yesterday and feel OK so far.

Poop - lost my post. hate that
Ok so all the TOMES in my library are gold plated. Leather bound and fairy dusted.
So need to share. Sorry. Tried to join an exercise class for girls with bc. Got turned down cuz apparently my heart won't take it. Pardon???? So now I wait for the cardiologist to call and put a 72 hour monitor on me to find out why my heart is screwing up on a simple bike ride. I didn't feel anything wrong at all. Damn, one thing at a time please. One damn thing at a time!

Most of my books are ratty old paperbacks, with hardly a tome to be seen, and it may be getting even smaller soon. The public library here has E-readers available for checkout. I've been on the waiting list for a few months now, and my name finally got to the top so I went and picked it up today. There are several items that all come together in a kit, and woe betide the library patron who omits any of them when returning the gadget to the library. The overdue fine is $5 a day!
Red, I am sorry to hear about your heart concern, but at least you didn't find out you had heart trouble by keeling over on a bike ride out in the middle of nowhere! I hope it turns out not to be too serious a problem.
0 -
Curve, how are you feeling today? Are the counter top and faucet installed? As in, all done on the inside of your home?
We do not have a bird bath in the back yard (because of the cats). There was a big hot tub in the middle of the back yard when we first moved in, it was very unsightly and because DD was only 4 yo at the time, we had it removed.
Red, don't get all worked up till you get more info. I like what Curve said. It's probably nothing, they want to protect themselves.
Curve, the e-readers sound interesting.
Shoot, I thought I had my word worked into a narrative, but it's slipped my mind. Okay the word was Smith because I can't remember.
Wahine, if you're lurking, thinking of you....
Where are the others??

@2TA, I'm feeling achy today. I think I have caught a cold. The inside of the house is not completely done but it's very close. The sink and faucets are in but not hooked up, so it was back out in the garage to wash the dishes last night.
This morning I had to get up early to take cat to the vet because she was walking funny. There was only one appointment left today and it was at 8:45 AM, a time at which I am frequently still in bed. Turns out she has a herniated disk. (Enough with the back injuries around here already!) So after I got home from the vet I went back to bed and slept for several more hours. I haven't tried out the e-reader yet. I think the one I reserved has a selection of classic literature on it. Maybe there are Greek myths and fairy tales, too. That's all for now. I'm going back to bed to sleep off some more of this cold.

Had this great recipe I wanted to try but unfortunately I had no THYME so I couldn't make it.
I made that up. Just so I could use my word. Im not happy tonight. Probably just depressed. A friend lost her dad today. My mom is going downhill. And she has no idea. Thinks she's still got all her faculties. I worry about her driving. I worry about her doing anything really.
Went to the WellFit place where they have exercises for people who have bc. They turned me down. Apparently my heart went nuts on the lowest level of the bicycle ride. They are putting me in touch with the cardiology folks. Ah well. Just wish it wouldn't happen all at once, you know?
0 -
awe, Red, hoping the heart issue turns out to be nothing. My BS was in charge of setting up my mx, didn't need to go thru pre-sx testing before exchange as it was within 6 month window. For my revision (3rd sx), needed to go back and have the testing again. Less than a week before scheduled sx, my PS didn't like the looks of my EKG, it started to get me upset and needed to see a cardiologist. He compared the 2 EKG's, they had a similar minor abnormality, so I was cleared for sx. Was grateful my PS wanted to be thorough and everything turned out ok. Hoping its similar for you.
Curve, hoping you're feeling better. Would a good meaty homemade soup be of any help? Hoping all your inside work will be completed by next week.

@2TA, I'm not recovered yet but I don't think this bug is going to knock
me flat like whatever it was I had last month. It feels like just an
ordinary cold. I decided to stay home from church today, because I'm
probably still contagious. A good meaty soup might help except for two
things: #1 I'm supposedly being a part-time vegan so "meaty" is mostly not on the menu and #2, I don't have any
homemade soup around the house, so I would have to make it first before I
got to eat it. I am drinking hot tea with honey and lemon in it and
sleeping a lot. I hope it tames the cold and cough
pretty quickly. After being so sick, my New Year's resolution was to
have at least two days of "emergency rations" (food I only have to heat
up) in the house at all times. I had just made a big batch of chili in
my crockpot on Thursday so I actually have more like three or four days'
worth. By that time I should be recovered enough to go to the
store and re-stock.0 -
Okay, haven't even read the posts because my DD made an offer. She is a nurse, an herbologist and a Master Reiki practitioner. I know it sounds weird but she is doing a distance healing tonight and wanted to know if any of my BCO friends wanted to be added to her pouch. Basically, it means would you like her to pray for you. If so, let me know via PM please. Thanks.
0 -
Okay. So now I've read the posts. Sorry about that in a way. My DD is dead serious about this but I guess I'm still on the hmm side of it.
Anyway, I will take all the prayers I can get!
My very good friend made us homemade soup concentrate. Cream of mushroom and cream of asparagus. I've heard asparagus is really good for bc patients so I will be eating this tonight. I've read if you STEAM it, then puree it and take 4 teaspoons morning and night, it will fortify your body. Any one else hear about this?
0 -
I will eat asparagus whether they fortify my body or not! They are delicious. I like them steamed and not pureed, and I don't stop after eating only 4 teaspoons! Yummm! They are just starting to come in the stores, too. (I mean the reasonably-priced ones from relatively nearby, not the ridiculously expensive off-season ones from the Southern Hemisphere.)
I don't know if I am running a slight temperature or what but my head and face keep starting to sweat all of a sudden and it's making me crazy! I think my hair may be starting to grow back and maybe that is also
making my head too hot. I thought Doxil causes hair loss too, so I am not going
to get my hopes up, in case it only grows for a little while and then falls out again. Or maybe the sweating is just hot flashes, but I don't
remember getting them like this pre-cancer. I also wake up sopping in sweat two or three times a night. I wonder if extra-hot hot flashes could be a
side effect of Doxil. And I still haven't finished crocheting my "ventilated chemo cap" to see if that helps any. I'm also going to start taking melatonin, suggested by the naturopath I consulted last week. He says it won't stop the sweating, but might make me sleep more soundly and not wake up because of it.0 -
love the asparagus too! Lightly steamed, not soggy. The thin baby stalks are finally in stores and also reasonably priced here too.
Curve - "ventilated chemo cap" - sounds sweet. Will have to check that out. Hoping the crochteting isn't too complicated for me.
0 -
Curve, the extra hot flashes and intense night sweats are definitely because of the drugs. Unless, like me (we're about the same age) you are peri-menopausal not pre or post. Either way, your MO can give you something for it. Melatonin didn't help me. Gabapentin worked a bit better, but I still have 3 or so a night. That bugs me more than the hot flashes. Puddles everywhere, ewww.
Maddy, rocketing is much tougher than crocheting. Lmao. Just kidding you. My DD has great luck with patterns on YouTube or maybe you could just TWEET out for a good one. I don't know how to use twitter but maybe you are more up to date than I.
Love and kisses to OncoWarrior (cc) and Kathy. {{{hugs}}}

Red, oops, auto correct did that and I didn't catch it. Have never looked on YouTube for patterns, just google them. just as long as they're easy and not a tweed
0 -
@RedReading, before my cancer dx I had a Mirena IUD for about 9 years,
which completely suppressed my period, so I didn't know whether I was
pre-, peri- or post-, but I got my doctor to do a blood test on me and it came back definitely post-menopausal (thank heaven). Oy vay, I just went and read about gabapentin on wikipedia. Scary side effects! I think I'll stay away. I can have two or three sopping sweats in a night without taking anything at all.@2TA, I don't think you will find any patterns online for a "ventilated chemo cap". I made up that name, and I'm adapting the hat from one in a book called "Seamless Crochet". The particular pattern I'm using is a way to make what's basically granny squares, but all connected together as you crochet, hence the name of the book. Once you get the hang of it, it's not hard. I'm pretty sure a teenager or tween could learn to do it, if they knew how to crochet at all.
0 -
Curve, funny, I googled "crocheted ventilated chemo caps" and nothing. Silly me! Never got into granny squares so I don't think I'll be trying them out.
Funny you all talk about night sweats. This may sound counter-intuitive: to ward off the night sweats, I slept with only a couple light blankets, they still happened anyway. One night I tried the heavy blankets I used prior to surgery, while I still had the night sweats, I woke up more rested and have ever since. So, I think it's back to the heavy blankets for me.
About the menopause thing: after 1st DX and chemo was put into immediate menopause. A couple years later, periods came back spotty, never regular. Then I just realized they had stopped all together. No major event, it just happened.

I'm tuckered out, so I'm not going to try to work my word into a narrative. The new word is vents.
The plumbers came today and connected my kitchen sink. No more washing dishes in the unheated garage. Woooohooooo!!!
0 -
Curve, let me out my two cents in and say I'm so happy no more garage dish washing! Enjoy the new kitchen! You have so earned it!

The world is looking a little rosier this morning. I took melatonin last night and the night before. I didn't go right to sleep last night (possibly due to taking a longer nap in the afternoon than I originally intended to) but once I went to sleep I didn't wake up. I don't remember if I woke up the night before that, but if I did it was only once rather than the two or three times that has been typical lately.
I need to do a little grocery shopping today. I used some of my "emergency rations" and need to re-stock. It isn't raining at the moment and the high today is supposed to be in the mid-fifties—a real heat wave for this time of year. Maybe there will be a scent of flowers in the air. If there is, I may not be able to smell it, because my nose is still stuffed up from the cold I caught last week, but I will see the flowers anyway.

I hate this. Feeling so exhausted all the time. I don't have time for 12 hours of sleep, 7 hours straight of work and 2 + hours of commuting and rads. Today it was 3 1/2 hrs for commute and rads cuz one of the machines broke down and we were all crowded into the three remaining. Good thing we all had CERTS to freshen our breath cuz we were stacked like cord wood in the waiting room.
I hate to sound defeated but I don't know how long I will be able to continue working. I know I only have 3 weeks left, but after only 6 treatments I feel like pooh. Sorry to whine to you, I just can't think of anything good right now.
Gonna sign off. Hugs'n'kisses
Deb

@RedReading, here in the US there is something called FMLA leave which allows workers to take a certain amount of time off for medical treatment and the employer is required to hold your job. It's intended for just such situations as you find yourself in now. It could be used to take the three weeks completely off for treatment, or to work a shorter day to allow time for travel. Is there anything equivalent in Canada? Or can you temporarily go on a reduced schedule? I was able to go down to half time while I was doing chemotherapy following my mastectomy. If I had not been planning to retire, I could have returned to full-time once I finished chemo.
I am sending you a big hug. (((RedReading))) Rant and whine as much as you like and cry if you need to, and I hope soon a thought of something good will come along to turn those tears into smiles.

Hi girls,
Been so hectic here and I have been totally exhausted....spending so many hours each day at the hospital is NOT fun. In fact, my parents came back from HI last Thursday night and I only got to see them about 20 min on Friday. We got up at 3am on Friday to go to the airport for our flt to Dallas....they needed volunteers, were very overbooked. So we ended up not being able to get out till Saturday....so came back home, and it gave us some time to do some things at home, so was glad of that. But then after the flight on Saturday and 3 hr drive to my DD's house, we only got to spend Sat night and all day Sunday with them, left Monday morning. We flew to Atlanta, very overbooked again, so we let them put us up at the Marriott and flew home Tuesday am, just in time for MY dr appt, then I went to my DD1's house to take her in for her rads tx. Today was full chemo and rads day at the hospital, then I went with my DH for HIS dr appt. I will finally get to see my parents (and refill my mom's pills) tomorrow afternoon after keeping our g'son here and taking him to his faraway class.
Red, I am so sorry you are not feeling good....it hit my DD very hard too. PLEASE take some time off of work, and let your body rest. I hope you can do that. My DD is trying to tolerate it all, but since she can't eat or drink (other than sips of water), and she can't get much into her feeding tube, its been rough. Her hair is coming out, but gave her a geisha neck....because so far it is mostly coming out from the neck up, in a straight line. Hard to tell unless you know. I think you both will be able to proudly show your battle SCARS once you are through with treatments. Hang in there, Deb...day by day, ok? (((((Deb)))))
Curve, I am glad you are on Melatonin. I used to take just 5mg, but now I take 10mg, and its the time-release type. I also saw something about the "sleep whisperer" on ABC nightly news....several videos on youtube....whatever they do seems to lull people to sleep. Of course, the first night at my DD's house in TX, I lay awake all night....not a second of sleep....don't know why. But omg I was dead tired the next day in church and had to fight from closing my eyes during the long sermon.
Maddy, OncoWarrior, how are you both doing? I caught up some on the posts, but not all. Just hope everyone is okay. Sometimes I feel like I am a sandwich, with my parents at one end and my DD at the other. Just worn out, thats for sure.
Hugs to all of you!!!! Kath

AAARRRGGGHHHHH..... I finally do a post and make it soooo long that Curve beats me to the word!!! lol. OK< now to go from "tears"....hmmmmmmm......something that sounds good right now, would be some nice firm, ripe pears. Yay, I did it!

teehee, wahine, I forgot to preview before I submitted my last word. I just got lucky that it worked anyway. I'm glad to hear you sounding pretty cheerful even though you must be run ragged with everything you are doing, plus all that travel! You are a pearl of a mom to your DD and daughter to your parents!
Sleep is weird, isn't it? I am finding for some reason that I am rarely able to sleep if I stay at my mom's new place overnight. I've had to limit my visits to when I can come home the same night, and as a result haven't been there since Christmas. Actually I did stay overnight (and IIRC, wide awake) at Christmas. I still don't feel up to going there and back the same day, but I'll get there eventually. I better be fit for the trip by Easter! That gives me about two months, since Ash Wednesday is next week. If I don't catch another cold, it should be possible.

Curve, good you found a project to keep you busy now that you don't have to work on the home or do dishes in the garage. I took a couple classes at our public library using Ancestry.com. Have been able to find out some info about all my 4 grandparents who came to America around 1910's from Russia. Wishing I could back track on DH's side as there's Native American in his roots.
Red, I so feel for you! I don't know how you work and go for treatments too. Plus, your weather isn't great for getting out. Wishing you more energy.
Good to see you back again CC and Wahine! Hoping your schedule will allow you both to check back again soon.
Finding I can't sleep tonight after sleeping most of the day. Lately it has been easy to sleep nights, but not tonight. And for some reason, Internet hasn't been working for over an hour. Just boring. Wish I could sleep but then again, just as I fall asleep one of the two cats leaps on me and wakes me up.
