I guess from this we already knew she was leaving for greener pastures.
I agree Ruth. I often found myself with TV on but not watching actively.

Once you start messing with the original format of a very successful show, it usually spells demise. (Think "American Idol").
I don't know if any of you are familiar with the term "jumping the shark" as it applies to TV shows. It is the point of evolution in a show that signals a decline in quality. Some kind of gimmick is used to keep viewers' interest and is seen as a sign of desperation. The phrase is based on a scene from a fifth-season episode of "Happy Days" when "the Fonz" jumps over a shark while on water-skis. The show was basically on a down-hill slide from that point.
I think DWTS jumped the shark when it pared down to one night a week. They had a wonderful one-season reprieve when Meryl went after the mirror ball, but now with Len's exit, some of the sparkle and vinegar that we love is forever lost. Ah, well.

My suggestions:
* three judges only and who really know about dance & have good chemistry
* do the two nights again, or at least don't have week one's votes eliminate someone the next week (someone who might actually dance really good.....for nothing)
* get rid of the gimmicky switching partners for a week
* most importantly pick 'stars' whom the audience has actually heard of and who are either very likeable, loveable, or hateable.....make the audience feel connected....nothing else will matter if you don't have contestants people are really pulling for, or against!
Bah Humbug! We will have to find something new to critique unless they can kick it up a notch!!!

One more reason not to tune into the upcoming season :
Derek Hough leaves 'Dancing With the Stars' for season 20
By Megan Daley on Jan 13, 2015 at 5:27PMImage Credit: Charles Sykes/AP
Sorry, Dancing with the Stars fans, but your favorite blue-eyed ballroom champion will not be returning to the dancefloor for the 20th cycle of the show.
Instead, Derek Hough will be headed to Radio City Music Hall to star opposite Tony award-winning actress Laura Benanti in “New York Spring Spectacular” beginning March 12. He will play the role of Jack in the short-run production with opening night scheduled for March 26.
Hough has won the coveted DWTS mirrorball trophy a record five times with his celebrity partners including Glee star Amber Riley and Dirty Dancing’s Jennifer Grey. He even earned an Emmy in 2013 for his choreography on the show.
But never fear, Hough will return to the show in the fall.

Thanks, TDMM, for posting. So sad! They will certainly need to have fabulous celebrities next time to keep this show from failing any further

Sadness!

Well maybe someone else will step up and do interesting dances. Maybe it a good thing yo shake it up. Cause it sure could use that. Wonder who's going to get the great dancer this year?
0 -
They will really need to think outside the box & put some new (dance related) twists in to get everyone excited again....get some big name stars that we actually know too.....
0 -
maybe Maks will come back, well we can dream can't we
0 -
now wouldn't that be something? Dreaming.....
0 -
How about Maks and Meryl being the hosts & do a dance at the beginning of each show.....

Cool idea, Ruth, wish they would!
Just saw this:

I've probably gotten sucked into the the latest hype....

"Dancing With the Stars" revealed the first 10 professional dancers who will vie for the Mirrorball Trophy on this season of the reality competition series during "Good Morning America" on Wednesday.
Only ten dancers' names were revealed on the popular morning show. The remaining two will be revealed in the coming weeks.
Likewise, the Hollywood cast for the twentieth season of the network dance competition will be announced on Tuesday, February 24. The season will also mark the tenth anniversary of the show's premiere.
The dancers revealed are Mark Ballas, Sharna Burgess, Witney Carson, Artem Chigvintsev, Valentin Chmerkovskiy, Tony Dovolani, Allison Holker, Kym Johnson, Pete Murgatroyd, Emma Slater.
This season, viewers will also have more access to the show than ever before. #DWTSAllAccess will expand to offer viewers a look behind the scenes with six live streams from key positions in the ballroom, as well as never before seen live streams from the DWTS rehearsal studio available for viewers to watch throughout the week on ABC.com.
"Dancing with the Stars" season 20 premieres on Monday, March 16 at 8pm/7c on ABC.

The line up was announced this morning on Good Morning America. Rumor Willis, daughter of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis, is paired with Val. I thought that was interesting.
Suzanne Sommers is paired with Tony. I am happy he is her partner. I know Suzanne has been controversial with the way she's dealt with breast cancer, but I don't really know too much about it. I never watched Three's Company, but a number of years after the show, Suzanne wrote a book about growing up with an alcoholic father. I read the book as a young adult and it literally changed my life because my dad was an alcoholic. It shed so much light on what I experienced, a whole new world opened up to me. So for that, I cannot really say anything bad about Suzanne (not yet, anyway, lol).
I see Kym Johnson, a professional, is back with the cast, and I'm glad; she's always been a favorite of mine.
There are a few more contestants, of course, but then I was dismayed. After introducing most of the cast and professionals, out comes Derek with Nastia Luikin, a beautiful, svelte, blonde Olympic gymnast, and they'll dance this season. Nothing like stacking the deck, right? They had those two at the anchor desk with Robin and a few other hosts chatting about the season, just those two, none of the other contestants. I thought that was so wrong! It was like "DWTS, starring Derek Hough and.....others!"

Here is the whole list:
Television icon Suzanne Somers, music great Patti LaBelle, football star Michael Sam and Olympian Nastia Liukin are among the stars getting ready to rhumba and samba on the dance floor.
Nastia Liukin, an Olympic champion gymnast, is paired up with none other than beloved pro dancer Derek Hough, who is back this season in a shocking surprise. Hough, a five-time mirror ball champ and Emmy-winning choreographer, previously announced his "DWTS" departure to perform in the Radio City Spring Spectacular.
"This all happened literally two days ago," Hough said live on "GMA" from New York where he will practice with Liukin. "I had a little heartbreak not being able to a part of the 10th anniversary, the 20th season. It's such a huge milestone for ‘Dancing With the Stars.’ It’s my family, so I wanted to be a part of it. ... I’m so glad we made it happen. Let’s make it the best season ever."
"Shark Tank" mogul Robert Herjavec, “Hunger Games” actress Willow Shields, artist-actress Rumer Willis, “Party Rock Anthem” singer Redfoo and R5 singer-songwriter Riker Lynch will also be vying for the trophy this season.

Here is another take on it:
After 19 seasons of hobbling faded celebrities through forcing them to perform complicated dance moves, then feeding them into the abattoir to make mediocre glue, Dancing With The Stars has announced that it has finally run out of stars. The ABC reality series revealed the cast for its 20th season this morning, a day that marked the first time in decades that Patti LaBelle and Suzanne Somers were considered “big gets.” The rest of the list is filled out with various athletes and Olympians, a model known for a single Carl’s Jr. ad, and Bruce Willis’ daughter. There is also the obnoxious guy from now-defunct party band LMFAO. No, the other one.
Here is the complete cast list, interspersed with some people we just made up. See if you can spot which ones! You can’t.
Noah Galloway: a double-amputee Iraqi War vet.
Robert Herjavec: a Canadian entrepreneur and Shark Tank judge.
Chet Clappington: inventor of that novelty hat with the hands where you pull on the string and they clap.
Patti LaBelle: Patti LaBelle.
Nastia Liukin: Olympic gymnast.
June Barnes: A crazy woman who straight-up lied to producers about playing the mom on Growing Pains and no one bothered to check.
Riker Lynch: singer in the band R5; also, one of five people who know the band R5.
Charlotte McKinney: girl in the Carl’s Jr. commercial—you know, the one with the girl wearing a bikini and eating a burger?
Michael Sam: first publicly gay player to be drafted by the NFL; first publicly gay player to be forced to go on Dancing With The Stars because he has nothing but downtime right now.
Sgt. Slaughter: The wrestler you wish were on this show; oh man, that would be awesome.
Willow Shields: played Primrose Everdeen in The Hunger Games, a character who is specifically there to not do anything.
Suzanne Somers: promoter of insane medical theories, occasional actress, master of thighs.
Rumer Willis: daughter of actual stars Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, which is close enough.
Potato Salad: The potato salad from that potato salad Kickstarter.
Redfoo: the crazy afro guy in LMFAO, that crappy band with the crazy afro guy.
Pamela From Your Work: Go Pamela!
Having officially exhausted the concept of “stardom,” Dancing With The Stars is already looking forward to its 21st season, when it will cull 12 random people from the streets and have them compete over standing very still.

LOL Ruthbru
And here I thought that having actually heard of (just) more than half of the "stars" before their names were announced made this group better than the average field in recent years.
We didn't get to see the big announcement. Almost an inch of snow fell here, so we had non-stop weather coverage pre-empting regular programing until 2 this afternoon.

Ha, ha, Ruth, love that second post....hmmm...potato salad, huh? Oh, and Deborah from work!?? Lol
Regarding the term "stars", It's always been my understanding that the show was created for B, C, or D list celebrities trying to jump start a career. The title "Dancing with the Stars" is meant to be tongue in cheek, the show sort of pokes fun at itself.
I am not sure how much I will tune in this season......

crap. I thought Derek wasn't gonna be there. Yeah stacked deck. Tony does very well with the older contestants because he pays attention to what they can do and works with them. What I would give if Derek had an old lady. That would be worth watching. He'd have to actually think and work on it. Sigh.
As for most of the group. Yeah. Don't know most. Just like previous years.

just saw GMA interviewing a few people from the new season which starts tonight and admit I want to see how things go. Just wish they'd stackedmthe deck in Val's favor and not Derek. Have to say, tho, I have often been impressed with Derek's dance routines. Guess it depends on how whiny or genuine his gymnast partner seems this season. *cue the DWTS theme music

DH, who pays absolutely NO attention to DWTS, saw one of the commercials and made the unsolicited comment "It sure looks like they are having a lot of old people on the show this season."
Time will tell how it goes.....see you guys tonight!

hey guys, show has just started and if you want there is another way to watch, I can't copy the link from my iPad but it's DWTS all access and they have six different camera angles and you can watch what's going on live it's like you're in the studio, I watched a bit but of course I'm heading off to the gym and I'll watch when it's playing west coast time, see you all later.

Post-show report. Don't read until its over in your time zone.
I am happy! I liked it a lot better than I thought I would. And the judges must have been told to score lower. (Which I am glad of.....otherwise there is no where to go as the season progresses.)
Willow- I don't see her getting too far. Robert-Surprisingly, I liked him. Riker- I lthought he was the best of the men tonight. Great footwork, high energy. It will be interesting to see how it will translate to other dance styles. Charlotte- I thought the whole boob thing was pretty tasteless & stupid. Her dancing was okay. Patty- I don't think that being a singing legend is going to get her very far. Chris- don't see him getting too far either. Michael -has some potential, didn't like the fake smile or cute butt references. Nastia- good, as expected. Redfoo-odd, I'll bet that he'll be the first to go. Noah- very inspirational and beautifully choreographed. It will be harder to adapt songs to work for him as they get deeper into the season. Suzanne- (whom I don't like in real life due to the fact that she gives out really dangerous 'medical advance') did a very good job. I felt myself judging her as a contestant, not a 68 year old 'star'. Rumer (who looks exactly like her mom!) was my favorite female dancer of the evening. Beautiful moves, beautifully done.

I liked Robert too and Michael Sam and I loved Rumers dance, Ahhh Patty she danced to her own song from the 70s which brought back memories of drinking Bacardi and Cokes and dancing in smoky pub bars unfortunately I don't think she'll stay too long and Noah was very inspirational but yes as you said Ruth it will be harder as the season goes on

Ruth, I agree with your comments. Tho I lost interest after an hour and a half. So I had to look up Rumor's dance on YouTube and it was beautiful. She will give Nastia a run for her money, so I'm glad that Derricks not a shoo-in for another trophy. I also have to look up Suzanne's dance, missed it, too.
Did anyone think Patti LaBelle would dance any other way than what she did? I thought many stars' dances were predictable. And they are repeating some dance songs from previous shows, like Footloose. I don't care for that, there's enoug music that they should find fresh tunes to dance to. I'm happy to see Kym Johnson back, she's always been a favorite of mine. My son watches SharkTank, so he wants me to let him know how Kym's partner, Robert, does.
Yes, overall, not really a bad start.

Loved Julianne's dress and hair. Also loved how Rumor was so elegantly dressed and not all sexed up. It was funny how they zoomed in on Bruce Willis in the audience and then slowly panned back a row or so to Demi. But hey, they were both there and in close proximity of each other, so kudos to them being there in support of their daughter

looks like it will be an interesting season. Maybe because I've actually heard of most of them?
Ruth, your comments were spot on

I was entertained tonight! To my surprise, there are a number of couples who have some nice chemistry and charisma together: Kim & Robert...he's cute! Sharna & Noah...he's bringing out her sexy...Tony & Suzanne...a great physical matchup, both nice and tall, cannot get over the fact that she's 68! Great legs. But ohmygosh, Allison & Ryker, yowza! i enjoy watching him more than any other male celebrity dancer on the show that I can remember.
Commendable performances by Rumor and Nastia, no surprise. But what about Patti LaBelle? I started laughing and said to dh,"I can't believe she's dancing that damn good!" and he said, "I was waiting for her to start singing." And I said, "no, she's a contestant!" She really surprised and impressed me.
