Hi gals....these pages are moving really quick.  I have been on  the tamoxtrain since May...my biggest issues are dryness and insomnia.  One of the doctors told me that it was OK to take Benadryl, I take 50 mg each night and I sleep about 5 hours.  If I got to bed about 20-30 minutes after taking it, I usually go to sleep, but there are times when I run into overdrive and I'm up all night.  I am going to look into the glycine.  Just wondering I thought I read something about Benadryl working against tamoxifen....any thoughts????  Have a great Saturday!!! Kathy

Chevy, please share how the hearing aid hunt goes. I'm going to have to go down that road soon but I just don't have the money right now and I feel like I need to do some research before I take the plunge - there are SOOOO many out there and of course they all say theirs is the best.

I had to laugh at what you said about possibly finding one at Walmart. My husband found one at Harbor Freight Tools for about $8 and brought it home for me. I wore it for about 30 seconds before it annoyed the heck out of me, but my 7 year old thought it was the coolest thing ever.  Tongue out

Chevyboy-he had some older hearing aides that he did not like.  He did not shop around started going to a very good DR in San Antonio and they have the hearing aide as part of the practice.  He just went ahead an did it.  he does not wear them all the time.  It is a guy thing I guess, but he knows when he needs them and does wear them

Kathy and Nancy I am also having insomnia.  Kathy when I spoke to the PA at the MO's office yesterday he suggested I take benadryl as well.  I told him I had read that you were not suppose to take benadryl with tamoxifen. So he looked it up while we were on the phone and he said you were right it lessens the effect of tamoxifen don't take it. So I am trying ambien cr but don't want to take it forever but at least I get 5 hours of sleep when I do with out it I wake up after 2 hours then go back to sleep for an hour or so and up again for good..  I really hope my body gets used to this I don't know how long I can go without sleep. I have been on the T since monday.

Eastcoastgirl...congratulations!!! You are getting there..slow but steady!

Jo1955- yeah..my morning dose is in with my vitamins but the pm half is lying in wait for me when I return home from work. It does not make me nausaeated or anything though so i just down it with a big glass of water...trying desperately to drink 8x8oz every day...foreign to me!

irishmom, - I have also read benadryl is a nono...my doc has me on zopliclone and I am taking 1500 glycine at night and trying to exercize 4x min per week and drink a lot of water, which is suposed to help as well! My personal trainer says you are supposed to drink half your weight in water every day....really?!?!?!?!!? Have also bought the night time hypnosis cd Ruthbru recommended on the SLEEP PROBLEMS train so...hope you get some sleep. Not sleeping as much as you need is horrible. I was always a 6-7 hour gal (from adulthood on) and woke up energized...not any longer. I wake up after 7 or 8 feeling exhausted....ah well...this too shall pass hmm?

Tory!  $8????  I can do that, Ha!  I have looked into a lot of different types of hearing aids, so by the time I go on the 2nd, I'll feel a lot better about talking to them.  And I know you can try them out before actually paying for them also.

Yeah Sherry, I don't think men like to do much of anything when it comes to taking care of themselves like that, or even visiting a Doctor, unless it REALLY gets bad, like whatever they keep complaining about.  Wink  My DH had such a hard time with no energy, & so tired all the time for 2 weeks....Finally when he thought he would topple over, we went to get it checked, & before the Doc would even do a blood test, the cardiogram showed "heart block".... So we rushed to the hospital....and a Pacemaker was put in the next morning.  Talk about WAITing till it's almost too late!   But guys are just that way....

You talk about sleeping....I can sleep great...and hardly any leg or toe cramps lately....Maybe after a year, I'm getting used to the Tamoxifen?  And also I can't HEAR anything at night, Ha!

Chevyboy..maybe I should learn from you with the hearing thing and wear earplugs!!! It would help me to not wake early from my neighbour upstairs (83 and spry as a pup) who gets up at 6am on Sundays to go to church! ....ah well....maybe whale music would also work:)

If you go to the following link, it will give you a list of drugs that can not be taken while on Tamoxifen- there are 284 of them.  My MO told me about this.

    www.drugs.com/drug-interactions/tamoxifen

Tried to copy & paste but had no luck.

whew! What a list! Many of those I haven't even heard of. I saved the site, so I can check back anytime I want to get cough medicine or anything. I'm sure I can't remember them all. Thanks for sharing that, Jo!

susantm - I found out we can't take anything with aspirin.  My MO told me to stock up on Aleve or Advil for my toe joint pains.

Yes, it is quite a list.

This list is alarmist and should not be taken at face value. Look at any medication at all and you will find a similar list. My oncologist told me not to worry about any drug interactions with tamoxifen whatsoever.

surfette - I  posted it for reference only.  I would advise each person to consult with their MO before taking any meds while on Tamox.

It is not so much that there are drug interactions as there are drugs that decrease the effectiveness of the tamoxifen.  I try to avoid all of those.  I do take a lo dose aspirin which the list says is okay.

tinker - Hope the pizza was good.   I am going great!  Have taken the plunge and doing my Tamox all in one dose - no problems.  Managing the toe pains with Aleve but not slowing me down.  Finally feeling like my old self.  Crossing fingers for no more setbacks.

June - I served us up some yummy wafffles for breakfast this morning.  Let's see what surprise I have in store for tomorrow.  You never know what time of day I will come up with something.

Jo, since you are clearly still up (It is 1am my time), can you tell me how to a.) send a private message (tried to send one to you to ask these technical questions but under 'to' there was no  space for a person's name.... and b.) add a picture or poster etc. I have information that I would like to put on the Canadian thread about an event that is coming up, but I have no idea how to do it! Thanks Jo! (oddly enough..the technical support gal at work is also named Jo!! coincidence?ooohhh)

Sandee - It is 11:00 my time. To send a PM, you can click on my name above my avatar and it will take you to my bio page.  On the right, you will see a line that says "send memeber a private message"  Click on that and it will go to the PM page.  You will need to fill in the subject line or you will get a message telling you to do this.

Before I can tell you how to send the picture/poster, I would need to know what format it is in and where you have it stored on your computer.

    Good morning ladies!

Sandeep ~ that's great that you are upping your water ~ I always feel better when I'm getting all my water in! Also the " half your body weight" in water is ounces :) .... So if I'm 150 lbs , I need to drink 75 ounces in water per day :)

Peg, I also take a low dose aspirin per my nat onc. Glad to hear thats okay with the Tamx.

My med and nat onc's also both told me that the most effective thing I can do to offset any SE 's is to get at least 5 days of exercise...and the kind of exercise that makes you sweat! I thought I was doing pretty damn good getting three days in! Yikes! So I 'm TRYING. Sigh! Some days the most I can fit in is a brisk 30 minute walk at lunch. Though I am one week into Tammy and have no noticeable SE's? Let's see if I am singing the same song in a month, shall we? ;)

Oh and I have lost 3 lbs! I think I am so conscious about what I am eating and trying to get the exercise, water etc in that it must be helping?

SusanGarden I lost weight when I went on Tamox, but I tried and got off my butt and excercised.......also, congrats on no SE, keeping my fingers crossed for you.  I think if you can make it through 1 week, things are looking in your favor!

Redninrah are you gaining or just feel bloated?

Jo loving the waffles (you spoil us women) and so happy to hear you took the plunge.....keep it up and praying the outcome is good......

So far, I am able to maintain my weight.  I could afford to gain a few pounds but don't want to.

June - Sure glad all the food is virtual.  Whew!  Sometimes too many calories but who cares.

I was just Rxed Tamoxifen by my onc (no rads or chemo). I'm getting my Rx filled today to start taking it tomorrow. So nervous about the SEs, so thank you all for the postings so I have at least some idea of what to expect. I would never have known that I could split the pill to ease some of the reactions. I normally have a habit of jumping both feet into anything new, but in this case, I'm starting slower so I can monitor what reactions I have. So, if splitting in two is an option, I'm doing that! Any other suggestions (such as best time to take it) would be so appreciated! I have a crazy work schedule and a 5-year-old son, so my days are long and hard sometimes.

JoanDavies - Try breakfast and dinner or breakfast and at bedtime.  I do the first one.  Either way, make sure you take it with food.

Good news is I slept last night.  Went to a community playhouse last night and was so sleepy I missed the punch line of the comedy we were seeing. urgh But went home and took my ambien cr just in case and did my usual sleep 5 hours and wake up.  But this time I was able to sleep off and on the rest of the night.  The hot flashes have arrived.  They are not too bad, get hot take covers off, cool down and get cold, put the covers back on and go back to sleep.  All happens pretty fast. But at least I am going back to sleep which I was not doing before.  I hope it continues.  I noticed yesterday that when I went for a walk I was really stiff and then it occured to me that when I did yoga on Thursday I was also stiff, so I am assuming that is also from the Tamox.  Nothing debilitating  but I am not usually stiff so I noticed it.  Soaked in a hot tub after walk and that helped.

Sherry - Good to hear you got some sleep.  I do the covers off/on routine but manage to get back to sleep.  I don't sleep straight through - 2 hours here/2hours there.  I have some stiff joints with the Tamox and I take you Aleve and it seems to help.
