Dawny... glad the biopsy went well... will you have to wait long for the results??, We are all anxiously waiting with you.... but good thoughts and feeling all the way :)

I was looking forward to getting my gels put back on after my next surgery, I only hesitated because I had an sentinel and an axillary node dissection and read that it wasnt a goof idea. The PT I went to said it was ok as long as they didnt cut my cuticles and I had it before and knew I wouldnt have a reaction, but now if is going to do more damage then good to my nails not sure its worth it... oh but CHEVYBOY, you are so right they are pretty indeed :).. loved having my nails done, guess I will have to go south and get a pedicure instead lol!!!

    SANDEE...LOVED the umbrella anology awesome!!!!!

Hope everyone had a great Valentines Day, the weather here was sooo beauitful wish I could of bottled it up added it to my fairy dust and sprinkled it everywhere lol!!!!

Susansgarden....I am taking the glycine in gel caps..you would think that would help, wouldn't you....hmmm...the Vitamin D should also be working in my favour to get rid of he vertical lines I have going on....weird. I have only done the fake nails once for a wedding...peeled them all off at the dance. I was helpless! I couldn't unzip my dress, put my contacts in (or take them out once I got them in) and I put a run in my stockings....no thank you! I will stick to short nails with coloured oe nails instead:)

Thank you Tink, chevyboy, Vikki...Glad the umbrella analogy made sense to other people....the one I see in my head is a bubble umbrella I had as a kid...clear plastic with a bright pink border....used to completely encapsulae me!..

Dawn...glad the biopsy is over..now to rest. You deserve gentleness tonight

Sandeeonherown: I started tamoxifin on Dec 1, 2010 and within a couple of weeks my normally strong, beatiful nails turned paper thin and looked warped. I have to trim them down now because they look so funny when they grow out. They are still growning, though, it's just that they are very thin.

My main se is hot flashes, but those started during chemo so I don't know if I can blame them on tamoxifin.

So it's NOT all in my head!  Tongue out  I hadn't thought about it, but just MAYbe the Tamoxifen does have something to do with our nails...  You know, I've always done my own nails, but I just 'glue' the whole nail on MY nails, then sometimes cover that with acrylic, file & buff, & they always look great.....& they didn't hurt my nails when I took them off.  But now, probably, with taking Tamoxifen, it does make your nails weaker....and have ridges.  Yes, I have to keep mine trimmed down now too!   I have some cute ones I bought from Walmart, so if the occasion arises, I'll just glue those little dandies on, & not GO to the nail garage, to have them "overhauled!"

So what else can we "fix"....Ha!

    Have a fun day girls.....xooxooxo

My hair is my best feature, fine but thick with a natural wave and still naturally blond at 68.  My nails on the other hand have always been ugly, always breaking and with ridges.  When I started Tamy in early November a beautician suggested biotin to keep the hair from thinning.  It seems to be working and not just on my hair.  So far my hair is a bit thicker if anything.  But the best part is my nails.  They are growing.  They are harder.  The ridges are smoothing out.  They haven't been breaking.  I've even had to trim a couple that were getting too long.

I wore fake nails for years and when we bought an old house to restore I took them off.  They were so damaged from all the years.  Ridges thin etc.  I have opted to keep them short and natural. I hope tamox does not make them even thinner.  I might need to try some biotin, my supplements just keep growing.

I keep whining but I officially feel like crap on tamoxifen.  I started a week ago Monday and it has been downhill every since.  I am still not sleeping.  I have had one good night sleep in the last week. Saturday I started with this one an off nausea and my hip joints and overall muscle are so stiff.  Last night after yoga my instructor came up to me and asked if I was OK because she noticed I was having problems with my poses which I don't normally have.  Also seems like the stiffness gets even worse after I exercise.  After I got home from yoga and had supper I finally had to take a soaking hot bath because I was so stiff. I have a Dr's appt today with a new MO so I will be talking to him about this.  But not really sure there is anything he can do about it.  I know a week is not enough time to really give it a chance but I cannot imagine living like this for 5 years.

Dawney glad your biospy went fine and hope the sorness goes away.  Will be praying for B9 results.

Exodus ~ sorry about your uterus problems.  I hope you get a surgery date and some relief real soon.

Dawney ~ hoping and praying for B9 results for you.

Loved our train decorated for Valentine's Day.  I hope everyone had a great day and got a nice hug from someone you love.

I had a dr. appt yesterday so I wasn't online.  I got the OK to go on with my next surgery.  Nips on the foobies.  Or frosting on the cupcakes I call it.  LOL

Hope everyone has a great day.  I went back to the gym today ~ ugh so hard.  But feeling better already from the workout.  ALSO drumroll PLEASE.  I slept last night.  I think from being up most of Saturday night, then I had a Grammy hangover from staying up watching, and stress from traveling 6 hours door to door to NYC for my dr.  I SLEPT sound.  woo HOO.  Anything's possible girls.

    :)

Oh and I just starting giving myself a gel manicure.  I bought the stuff, its called Shellac gel polish and a uv lamp!  I took off the fake gels and my nails are awful.  I am liking them shorter and they are just a big harder with the gel manicure.  And it comes off with nail polish remover.  Now I need glycine....and BIOTIN!

    :)

Hi just wondering what is the dosage you take of the Biotin? I take 5000 mg and it doesn't do much, maybe I should raise it.

Hey everybody, this is something about cancer I just stumbled upon and thought it pretty great.  If you want to read more, I've added a link at the bottom.  Love and hugs to everybody today.

    Why me?

njVictoria - I'm close in age to you, 54 now.  I started tami the middle of Sept during, what was to be, my last period.  Just had my 6 mo. checkup with my Chemo Doc yesterday and he said my estrogen numbers put me into menopause, but he is planning on keeping me on Tami for another year, at least, then switch to an aromatase inhibitor. So, maybe tami does put us old gals into menopause?  My periods had been sputtering along the last couple of years, very irregular.  Just so you know what happened to me.

That happened to me, too...  I had my nails done on a cruise, and found out that she used ACRYLIC nail polish...  so now my nails are breaking even worse.

    Ladies,

If you have brittle nails, that break...  see your dr.  you may have thyroid issues.

Harley44I have been borderline for so many years and my nails are horrible now more than ever and that is due to Tamox for sure.....I am going to look into Biotin, but I will have check my levels when I go end of March.....I hate to wait that long, especially after a day like today......I felt like a MACK truck ran over me......so tired, but I tried to nap as a lot of you women do and I just couldn't fall asleep no matter how sluggish I felt....

    June

If your thyroid is 'borderline', you need to see a dr., and start taking thyroid hormone.  Some will tell you that you don't need it, but you do.   I had no additional nail problems from Tamoxifen.

I believe that A LOT of women who develop breast cancer also have thyroid disease.  I believe that there is a link, even if my dr. won't admit it.

Tink/HarleyMy med doc has always tested me as my sister had a huge thyroid issue and had to have hers shrunk 2 times and the specialist from Boston told her she was a few weeks late of making it into his book he published.  That was how bad she was.  I remember taping her eyes shut when she went to bed at night as they would remain open if not taped.  It is such a tiredness/sluggish no matter what I do and there can be days I am fine and days I am just plain ole exhausted......the thing that stinks is that I have to wait until the end of March to have test run and that I am sure I will have to beg them to do them.....So Tink they never do any tests unless I ask them to.  I see a lot of women being tested but I assume it is because they had chemo....not sure!

Tink here is hoping that sleepdust makes it here soon.....Smile

No June I didnt, My MO at first recommened it but 2nd opinions brought me to an axillary node dissection 6 weeks after the first surgery and then that was clear, My oncotype was the only thing that left her to say I could go either way, I had 2 cancers, ductal and lobular They oncotyped both and accidently sent the ductal twice, which came back with 2 different scores, one being a 23 which is intermediate, so that is such a gray area. She said with all the other pathology reports, having a bilat mx etc.. it was my choice and she was comfortable either way, she said in my case the benefits did not outweight the risks. So Ii went straight to Tammy!!!!

Chabba...Biotin???!! Where would I get that? I am ready to try it...my hair is baby fine..curly but not thick...have used jojoba oil before and it helps..but not the nails! you ladies are full of great ideas!! now we have consensus that tami has affected our nails...good to know I am not going nuts on top of everything else!

Went to my dr. today and got a prescription for 10mg of tami instead of 20 so I don't hav eto chop the damn things in half (which I have not done evenly since I started spliting them!)...dropped it off at the pharmacy one month ahead of time to ensure they have it in. Also talked to my dr (whom I adore! who else gets a hug from their doctor when they leave at the end of he visit????) about my lack of sleep and she said , essentially, take the damn zopliclone...then she looed and said "Sandee! It is only 5mgs!! no wonder you ar ehaving trouble sleeping right now!! That is the lowest dose you could take..." so....now I am going to double it and sleep....here's hoping!..Also asked her about vitamin D and she suggested I ramp it up to 2000units...so that is what I am going to do. She did not think a blood test was required.

Also went to the massage therapist today (my back is OUT!! ) and will be at the chiropractor's tomorrow ...feel fused....gues the tension has to go somewhere when you are trying to behalve like all is normal eh? something is going to give. So., it is off to an epson bath for me!

    Cat, welcome.

I agree with all about the blood test.  My doctors haven't even suggested regular liver function and I don't think they did one to start with.  I did not do chemo but it seems like they should check that with Tamox as well.  I asked about vitamin D and my onc ordered that which was okay.  It is kind of weird the way everyone is treated differently.

June - I hope you start feeling better soon.  I have good days and bad days and it can be discouraging.

I am always slow after sitting for a while, I am sure exercise would help.

I slept pretty good last night until about 4 when I woke up with breast pain.  This biopsy hurt a lot more than the last one and I am soooo bruised!  It's tolerable though.

Tink - hope you had a great day!

I've been using 5000 mcg Biotin gel caps.  I get it at our local pharmacy.  They didn't carry it until I asked about it but now they do.  Haven't been "to town" to check for cheaper sources such as WalMart.
