Jo - my radiology nurse said absolutely NO antioxidants during radiation..no Vit A, C, E...hasn't said not to after but I have avoided these three..just take C when folks around me are ill..I need to get some probitics into me...yogurt may not be enough . I have not had a yeast infection in years and had forgotten how much I hate them!...golden seal, Myrrh and canesten...what a combo. Went looking in the fridge section but could not find it so will check another store.
Called my surgeon's nurse tonight re. breast pain and to ask whethe ror not I should get a sleeve for flying sinc eI will be going far away. She said not but that if i was concerned, I could go to the drug store and there is a type of gause here that I cold cut to make an apropriate size...and bring it with me just in case...as for the breast pain, she seemed to think it was from radiation and my body still healing...helped to relieve my fears. I see my radiologist in three weeks and will ask him...decided not to go to massage tomorrow as the idea of lying flat on the table on my breast...no can do.....just tender...the scar tissue is sore..does that make sense?
Justme- Glad you had fun!!! A week away sound sbrilliant!

This is all so confusing about the vitamins. The nurse at my MO is who told me to take vit E for the hot flashes. I take a multivitamin, 1000 units of E, fish oil and probiotics. I only take C and eccanechia if I am around people who are sick or feel I am getting sick. I don't see my MO again until this summer as I am down to every 6 months now. I am not sure what answer I would get. I thought some of the women that were seeing naturopaths were taking the vitamins. I sure wish we could get the same answers from every MO we ask instead of different ones. It is very frustrating because I sure don't want to be making the tamox less effective.

Peg119 - Seems to be the same as what kind of cream to use or for us to eat or avoid soy.,...the first surgeon I saw said that the studies are inconclusive so best to avoid soy and the surgeon who did the work told me to stay away from soy....the radiologist's nurse said no to the antioxidants while on radiation but I neglected to ask about afterwards....will ask in three weeks...expect a different answer fro what others have gotten (lol)

Sandee - I've got on my list to ask onc too - about C. I had read that antioxidants should be avoided in "active" treatment - rads and chemo -- because they do such a good job protecting cells, they even protect cancer cells! But I thought after that it's OK and very beneficial??? I don't take large doses of C mostly because I just forget - but I eat plenty of antioxidant foods on purpose.
ps - my hot flashes are always around 4 am too! Someone else had posted the same thing earlier - I think it was Dawn. Must be bio-rhythms of some kind at work.

Forgot to post this. Did you guys see the ABC WOrld News segment on hot flashes & how they are good for your heart??? Here it is.

Janetinvirginia- imagine hot flashes being good for your health....a male researcher???? I sill don't want them....but still have an extra shir available just in case. The vitamin C thing.....worries me. But again, every doctr is different. I read in December that you should not do rads and start tami at the same time because the tami counteracts the radiation...huh??? My radiologist and oncologist both knew I was doing the two simultaneously and noone said a word about it so....I think every dr. has a different set of info...and different experiences and different ideas and has read different things...and so they tell us different things and we are confused.
I am going to err on the side of caution until I can talk to my radiologist. Enough on my plate without worrying that Vitamin C is acting against the drug that is in my body fighting the free roaming cancer cells! Frustrating, hmm?

Saw my onc today about the toe pains, numbness on the bottom of my toes and the pains that are starting to creep up my calves. He said it sounded like neuropathic symptoms and could be related to arthritis. He ordered labs and will give me the results soon and give me a better answer then. In the mean time, he gave me a script for Lyrica for the pain. I start that tonight and will see what happens in a few days. Hope to get some relief.
I was supposed to see him again in 6 weeks for my 4 month followup but he decided to do everything today. Labs, breast exam, physical, got scheduled for a diagnostic mammo in early June, 4 mo followup in late June. That way he has the mammo results before I get there.
See my gyn a week after the mammo and will have him get a copy of the results as well. I am going to ask about a transvaginal US since I will have taken Tamox for 6 mos at that point.
Love the idea of one doctor coordinating everything. Much less confusing and fewer appts. Still seeing the surgeon for the breast pain - still having them but not as frequently as before. Hope he can find the source soon. In as much as I love my surgeon, it is time to say good bye and move on.

janetinvirginia-why wouldn't tamox be considered an active treatment? I think that is my MO's point of view and why he told me not to take the antioxidants. My RO was fine with it during radiaiton. But since I am with my MO for the rest of my life and I know he keeps up with new studies I am going to go along with him.

TEKLYA If you had reconstruction or masectomy it may be nerves trying to regenrate. I had both last July and I still get that.. had some today as a matter of fact, oddly though only on one side wierd!!!! but always best to check with your doc.
JO Glad your doc is being proactive and you were able to get all that done today. I have heard of Lyrica, thinks its used for fibromyaglia too. I hope this help you and fast!!!! how are you feeling tonight? any better?

if you are, I am! I called my surgeon's nurse this morning to ask about it and she said it was a normal reaction to radiation from the sounds of it. I see my radiologist on the 21st of March and will have a list of questions for him for sure..the pain I am feeling (and having been for the past wo weeks) is a stabbing pain some times and just aching along the side of the breast on the high ribs the rest of the time....tenderness from radiation? All seemed to be pushed forward due to my ankle/hip/back being out of whack...and have decided not to go to massage tomorrow as the idea of lying on my breast for an hour tomorrow...does not do anything positive for me so...nope. Next week is soon enough . Had to cancel chiro appointment because of the freak snow storm...but have another one on Wednesday...then will watch Melissa Etheridge while sitting on an ice pack! wheeha!

Tink - Lyrica is advertised on TV for fibromyaglia but is also used to neuropathic pain. Yes, I have done my homework and looked it up - thanks to Mr Google. I will start tonight. Right now I am sooo tired from the very busy day - I don't think I feel anything right now. I am off to walk the dog and my head is going to hit the pillow soon.
Good Night Ladies.

I have been having horrible knee pain. It even gave out on me last week and I fell but caught myself on my dresser before I hit the floor. I have had minor issues with it before but have never been to the doctor, but it has gotten worse since I started Tami. I walk like a 90 yr old woman, not that there is anything wrong with a 90 year old woman but I am only 46!! Tink - didn't you say you have been having knee pain?

DAWNEY Yes i have been have knee and leg pain at night on and off... kinda like sharp shooting pains seems to feel better when I am walking as opossed to sitting down feels wierd!.

Boy, this thread sure goes fast
SherryC ~ glad that your MO is saying the same thing as mine. I thought he was crazy because I was given the "green light" to take my vitamins. I had back to back appointments that day, rad onc and MO.
Then 3 months later, MO told me to stop, and yup it's because of the report he read. I even asked about Probiotics and he said "nope". My MO always checks my cancer marker "CA 27 29" and he said not to have the antioxidants feed the tumor, nor to decrease effectiveness of Tamox. He said to get the vitamins from food. Cooked vegetables will yield more nutritient than raw veggies.
Aside from insomia, which I battle it with 0.5mg of Ativan nightly, I have night sweats, pain on the R knee (and this has moved from the Left to the Right now), and occasional hip pain. I had one pretty bad foot cramp 3 days ago (out of nowhere). I also have louder ear ringing and headache.

Diamondgirl I too suffered last week from loud ringing and distorted voices almost like it was muffled but loud if that makes any sense. It was last Wed and then 2 days following.....I freaked out needless to say but so far so good.....never ever had any ear problems and I am on month 10.....0

Morning girls! I go pick up my brand new razzle dazzle hearing aids this Thursday!!! I could really HEAR with them, when he tried some on me!
And I'v decided, sort of, I think, that at my age, I won't take anything else....No more drugs...No more nothin'! I am just going to stay on lots of vitamins & look at the world through "rose-colored glasses!"
June....just be careful....if you think something is wrong, go get a free hearing test from Costco. You know, we try & work through the SE's, but sometimes things happen, that we just don't know about...that NO-one knows about, or will tell you....
Have any of you heard about Estriol, or Topical Progesterone? What are those for? I'll have to check it out....xoxoxoxo

Checking in: there is plenty of advice on both sides of the anti-oxidant fence, and it's why during chemo, if you worked with a naturopath, recommendations vary. Some say absolutely nothing, not even L-glutamine during chemo. My doctor was fine with it, but she didn't recommend it.
I'm afraid all naturopathic interventions will remain up to debate for a long time. There just isn't the pharma incentive to test them. I consider it a miracle Vitamin D was studied.
I tried to run, and my goodness. Forget it, that's it. Tamoxifen is definitely making my joints more sensitive. Jumped on the bike following day, followed that with a swim. Staying mobile is where it's at!
I am convinced,I don't care what anyone says, that Tamoxifen is all but killing any hair growth I had. It is literally growing about 1/4 an inch every 6 weeks. Glad I have a covering, a haircut is not in my near future. 6 months and counting, I really bounce back slowly.
Estriol is supposedly the "good estrogen", topical progesterone is also up for debate. All of these hormonal pathways are so delicate, it's why my awesome naturopath, even though she bucks the medical establishment, is not planning on hormonal interventions for an ER+ patient. Newer studies are showing estrogen may even be a protective! But they just don't know yet, and until they have a little more certainty, progesterone appears to cause problems, too. I surmise it is all but impossible to manage levels accurately...

Good Morning Everyone - Started the Lyrica last night and woke up this morning feeling great. First time in a long time. Got some really good sleep and the toe pains are down to a real dull ache. I can live with that. This may work after all. I am at my 6 month cancerversay and hopefully this is the turning point for me. I have had such a hard time up untl now - feels like I can finally step off the roller coaster.
HMM! What can I come up with for breakfast - I feel energetic this morning.
