Tink - The piggies are still hurting but not too bad yet today.  If I stay off them, it can deal with the pains.  The "big bad wolf" AKA BC is to blame for this. LOL.

So, upon the threat of my boss holding me down and force-feeding me the Tamoxifen because she believes I should be doing what my doctor is telling me to do, I bit the bullet on Friday and took the first pill. So far nothing major to report, although I confess that I'm monitoring every little reaction and trying not to automatically attribute it to our friendly enemy. I'm curious about the types of foods you are NOT supposed to eat while on Tamoxifen. I know I have to give up grapefruit (sob) for five years, but what about other citrus? I drank some lemonade yesterday and immediately panicked that I counteracted any of the benefits from taking the pill. Do any of you guys know about this?

Joan - I was not giving a list of forbidden foods before starting the T.  I know grapefruit does not go well with a lot of medications and that is alright with me - don't like grapefruit.  I should add that to my list to ask my onc when I see him tomorrow.

Congrats on taking the plunge.  I just went for it and decided to throw it in with the mix of my other meds and supplements and forget it.  My onc will let me know when I can stop. We gotta do what we gotta do to try and stay healthy.

     Chevyboy~

I think I'm understanding you correctly when I say that you mean you are inquiring as to whether 10mg of Tamoxifen would be as effective as 20mg.

If so, at one time I did find several articles that said the prime reason we use 20 is because that is the doseage most the studies were based upon.  I believe, but am not sure, that the UK had some where they felt 10mg was sufficient.  Maybe someone who is a good "Googler" could research this.

Once when I first took the big T for only a few months and was having many se's, I totally quit taking it....on my own and w/o permission from any doctor...for 10 days.  I felt much better, but then got worried.  After that, I did cut the pill in half and take half in the morning and half at night.  I don't get that many se's now.  But who knows why because we all seem to react in different ways on many of the se's.

    Hope this info helps.

Maybe I'm having sympathy pains but MY left toe hurt the other night!!!   I've gotten over being so thirsty taking Tamox, but I'm going to up the water consumption again - hoping that will flush whatever out.

So here's to healthy, happy piggies! :)

Harley44 - yes I did get the leg cramps and sometimes still do.  What I do to combat them is to have a banana right after dinner.  I don't have one every night just a few times a week and that seems to help.

Chevy are you post menopausal?  If so, why not talk to your dr about switching to another drug like AI?

Thanks, ladies!  I knew you could help!  June, I have always had issues with Toe cramps, even before I ever started Tamoxifen.  This is why I couldn't be sure if it was from Tamoxifen or just another one of these things....

Thanks Tinker.  I am sore all over, too, sometimes.  My latest episode of soreness is from having my MIL stay with us, she broke her ankle and it's so HARD, to push her in her walker, to the bathroom!!   Oh, and now I have to vacuum and CLEAN alot more, since she is staying with us til she recovers...      SIX more weeks....  UGH!

    MarieK

Yes, I hear bananas are good for cramps... something to do with the potassium or something...

    Thanks!

cevyboy- I cut mine in half but will be going to the 10mg tami starting in two weeks....can't seem to cut them evenly so I asked my doc for a prescription for 10mg pills instead....seemed simplest. She also said spliting the dose in half was ok

Jo/June/Tink- Have you ladies tried simply changing the tami brand you are using? There is more than one out there and it could be the binders or some such thing you are reacting to....just a ought

harey-  have woken up with a few leg cramps....my trainer said GET POTASSiUM into you and drink mor ewater..so I now eat a banana every day...seems to be helping.

Joan- glad your boss got you moving. I just soent the weekend with my best gal pal who went through this event 7 years ago ( at 36!)..she said she had no side effects...her husband countered with 'you were exhausted for the first two years at least....and you were cranky'...so there you go...different perspective. She did not have any body aches or pains though so i am going with that.

Had a hot flash both last night and the night before around 4am. Friday I was stripped down to nothing and last nigth i stood in the snow in my pjs....not looking forward to summer (or my vacation plan? ) if I can't get this in order...might need to travel with a fan !

Oh thanks Cat!  Yes, I have read on another forum where the women are taking 10mg, instead of the usual 20mg....And Marie....Yes, I am way beyond post-menopausal, ha!  Although I never knew when I went through the "change".....I think because I was always on the pill, or some sort of estrogen.

I really want to take Tamoxifen, & after I go to see about hearing aids tomorrow, I'm going to call the Oncologist & ask about cutting down to the 10mg....I just hate to think of this hearing loss getting worse, although I know they can "adjust" the aids if your hearing gets either better or even worse.....and maybe even go back on the 20mg sometime.

Yes, I could take Femara....I was going to ask her about that also, but the cost was so much higher than Tamoxifen, because it isn't generic...that's the main reason....And that's why I asked for the Tamoxifen......I've got my fingers crossed that I can get the aids tomorrow!!!!!!!!  Thanks again!

Sandee - I was not aware that there was more than one brand of Tamoxifen.  My problem is going to be with my insurance.  They will only pay for the generic.  Thanks for the tip - I will ask my onc tomorrow when I see him.

Hi Jo - yep....there are a number of the. I was takin gone that was shaped like a hexagon (or was it an oxagon?) but after one month, my pharmacist switched me because the supplier did not have enough of them and she was afraid I would run out....I also noticed on the prescriptio nfor 10mg, that it is a different name too so....there is more than one and I think there is also more than one generic brand.

Diamond Girl-my new MO told me the exact same thing.  He said the report is no antioxidants. Vit A, E, C.  So he took me off of my Vit E and my multivitamin as well.  He said we want to kill the cancer with tamox and not encourage them to grow with antioxidants.  He said when my Tamox treatment is over I can start taking them. He also told me that most of us are low in Vit D so he put me on Vit D3 2,000 IU's a day and up my accidophilus from 2 billion to 8 billion a day.  He seemed to be glad that I was taking accidophilus (probiotics) as he said it is really good for you and most people don't take it.

I was out of town this weekend and this train has moved fast.  I have not had any nausea so I think I am home free.  Also my insomnia has gone away and I have been sleeping the last 5 days.  So the only SE left is my hip joint pain.  I am taking The Glucosomine Chondrionton so hopefully that will start doing me some good.  I think it takes awhile to build up in your system.

Jo I hope they can do something for your toe joint pain.

peg I am glad your D&C went well.

Tink sorry about your friend feeling left out.  My husband always want to know whom I am talking to on the comp.  Now he is used to it and will ask if I am talking to my bc friends.

Sherry- a massage may help with the hip! I have been reading that abou tanti-oxidant as well. At first I thought that was just because of the radiation but essentually, tamoxifen is doing the same thing! I too am on 2000iu's of vitamin D...only take Vit C when people around me are sick...same with echinecea...Not taking A or E....sounds like a quesstion for my radiologist in March.

Ladies I know we talked about leg cramps, but has anybody had leg pain or acheyness, my legs get these little sharp shooting achey kinda pains going through them... I dont thinks its from the treadmill, but they seem to just hurt...

I asked my radiology oncologist about vitamins when I finished radiation, and she said they were fine to take with radiation over. My regular oncologist didn't say anything about them one way or the other. Maybe I will ask more specifically when I have my next appointment.

I have had a couple leg cramps since starting tammy, but I used to have them occasionally before, so I'm not sure tammy has anything to do with it. They usually happen in bed, and if I stand up, they will go away. I am trying to eat more bananas, too, to help with that. I am eating more yogurt for the probiotic stuff--also because I just got my first canker sore in years, and I seem to recall that Vitamin B and yogurt helped with that.

Boy you ladies have been busy!!

Thank you all for your thoughts and concerns regarding my ovaries.Laughing this is the only place I don't feel like a hypochondriac. I am having a colposcopy Thursday so I will talk further to my gyn about the US. He said at my last appt he would do one if I wanted it but he made me feel like I was being silly cause he felt nothing then I was thinking about the costs of it and opted to say no but now i think i should get one. I've been having this pain for a while.

Peg glad everything went ok and you are feeling good.

Joan - Glad you bit the bullet. We've all been there so afraid only to find out its not the dreaded toxic pill we feared.

I have some more reading to catch up while watching the Oscars ... Oh and JO you made my mouth water with the pic of those biscuits with sausage gravy which is one of my guilty pleasures!! MMMmmmmm

Good night all...you ladies are the best!

    Hugs to all

    Diane

Seems my list of questions for my MO is growing.  I see him tomorrow afternoon for the toe pains.  I am going to ask about different brands of Tamox, the antioxidants and other supplements.  I stopped the Vitamin E halfway through rads when I kept reading on the rads threads that we shouldnt.  My moron rad onc never said anything about it.  I also noticed when I stopped the Vit E, my hot flashes eased up.  Interesting, because I researched Vit E and it was supposed to not only east hot flashes but also act as an anticancer drug.  Not that tidbit of information can confuse one.

Sherry - I have been taking the Acidolphilus for the past couple of years.  My GYN had me take it when I had a series of yeast infections.  I get those easily and especially when I am given antibiotics.  I am not taking as much as you are but maybe I need to up the dose.

    Good Night Ladies.

    Hi there,

I just came across your post and it caught my attention. Are you saying the hearing problem has to do with the Tamoxifen? I started in June and noticed that me ears are constantly plugged up (either one or both) as if I had water in it. Sometimes for a couple of weeks at a time before they "pop" open just to plug back up a few days later.

I never put the two together until reading your post. Could there be a connection between the Tamoxifen and ear problems?

June, Jo and Chabba.......so so sorry you are all having to go thru this...... pain sucks!!!

I know, I have fibromyalgia on top of all this other crapola and am in pain 24/7, but just go on.....

and the muscle aches are horrible. Last night was rough at work, could not sit still, kept getting up and walking...and my legs are swelling a bit more than before going back on the tammy......hopeing this is just cause I have had to work (and sit when I work) so much this week.

Welcome to the new ladies.......this group is great and yes, so much info which helps so much.

I know what it is like to not have that friend, or person to talk to. My best friend of 25yrs. I haven't seen since I was dxd. She was suppose to come be with me, but didn't.....had other things come up.      The two best friends in the world I have live in Ga.. and Tx.....so they can't come right away.....or often. Thank goodness I will be getting to spend a week with one, and weekend with the other here in April :)     But, let me say this......there are women on here that I have become close to already and care about......you ladies are awesome!! HUGS to each and every one of you!!!

Jo-I also take acidophillus for yeast infections and fever blisters.  I guess because it is so good for our immune system.  I did not ask him why so much, if I remember on my next visit I will ask if it is because bc and treatment or if that is standard.

My RO told me all my vitamins where fine to take.  When I switched MO's the new ask as we were going through things and he new I was still checking him out asked me if he could critique my supplements.  I said of course and that was when he went into the whole antioxidant thing.  He said it is for all cancer patients in treatment.  After treatment can go back to them.  Since tamox is a treatment cannot take them.

Hope every ones aches and pains get better.

Hi girls !  I am back from a week of vacation skiing in Vermont !

You have been busy with your posts.  Let me try to catch up.

Peg glad to hear your d&c is done with and hope it brings you relief and the results are good.

Penny sorry to hear of all your troubles.  I sometimes think these tests cause more alarm and find things that are nothing.  Praying that is the case for you.

Chevy hope those hearing aids help.  You can't seem to catch a break.

Sherry :( sorry to hear about your dad now having mets to the ribs.  Are they going to do radiation?  Stay strong sister !

Tinks, June, Harley, JO~ and everyone !  Group ((((HUG))))

Yes I have had the leg cramps, OUCH !  My calf actually hurts the day after it happens.  (which is usually in the middle of the night)  I too attribute it to low potassium and darn tamox and eat a banana.  I haven't had one in quite some time.  KNOCKING ON WOOD.  I do have some joint pain in the knees from tamoxifen if I sit too long.

Thanks for all the great food pics JO yummy.  And the praying kitty is adorable !

Have a good day all ~

    :)
