Is anyone else an atheist with BC besides me?

I moved to Tennessee almost 20 years ago, and as much as I love my husband and his family, I often dream of moving back to any of the normal, less-hyper-religious areas of the country I'd lived in before. Can't even watch a local newscast here without someone talking about how their faith sustains them, or God was watching over them (but apparently not the other people who were not saved), or thanking Jesus for whatever good thing happened to them. I don't remember that happening so much in Chicago or Denver or LA. I swear half the newspaper's Letters to the Editor are some form of preaching or proselytizing. I think I've become hyper-sensitive to it, it just makes me cringe. The blatant insertion of religion into politics and public policies here is both frightening and infuriating. I can only vote against the tide and hope for a better future when reason holds sway over superstition. Or I out-live my husband (unlikely) and run away.

Everyone assumes that if someone is living in the South, the person must be a Christian. Wolf Blitzer asked a tornado survivor if she thanked the Lord for saving her from the storm. http://www.dailykos.com/story/2013/05/21/1210814/-Blitzer-Asks-Atheist-Tornado-Survivor-If-She-Thanked-the-Lord

And it's hard being a Jew in the South,, there are actually people who still think Jews have horns,,,, no joke. I grew up in Miami,, and one of my Jewish friends ending up going to college in Monroe, LA,, and girls would ask him if horns were hiding under his curly hair. So bizarre,,,There is a LOT of evangelical religion here in North Central FL,, but I live in a college town,, where there are people from all walks of life. We are the one liberal county in the middle of complete conservatives.

My neighbor moved to my town from rural Louisiana. The day she moved into the house next door, I welcomed her to the neighborhood. She asked me if anyone had ever died in the house she was renting. She said she didn't want to have to deal with ghosts. There are all sorts in this country although there appears to be more strange in rural America.

I managed to close a small forum for saying that Jesus was a communist! OMG! How could I? They read their bibles but I don't think they understand the words????

I thought helping the poor was supposed to be a big part of Christianity, but I usually see the "Christian" politicians want to take away social programs, like free school lunches, etc.
I think that is rather amusing that you closed a forum!

Well they closed it due to the "bickering"! Some people live in lalaland.

Jim Morrison I have missed seeing your gorgeous face! (ok, I know it's you, Blue Dahlia) you are such a good one for livening up anything! I don't think we've ever exchanged a post here, but I've read plenty good stuff when there were wild broil-ups in the past. It's been too calm. Cheers!

Blue - I didn't know you came here either. Great to see you!

Butting in here. Glennie, you are SO correct. What really sealed the deal for me was the Baptist pastor who was outraged homeless people were sleeping in his paper recycle dumpster. What did he do? Had the dumpster removed, nothing for the homeless. Out of sight, out of mind.

I did remember seeing a story where a pastor dressed up like a homeless person to see how his parishenors would treat him. It was rather eye-opening as I recall. They were not as "christian" as he had hoped. There are many who want to help, and do help,,,, but I can't stand the false "Christians" who claim to be and quote all the Bible scripture and then do not act as Christ would have wanted them to, to help the poor.0 -
Today. I read an article reported in the Tampa area about a church that had scheduled a funeral for a man and when they found out he was gay they refused to perform the service.
How impressive.

Prolly wasn't this guy. Happened in my town here. He didn't last too much longer, neither did the physical buildings. It's a city parking lot now. Rather fitting I think.

**slams head on desk**oh brigadoon, that is so sad. The poor family. How awful.
and don't even talk about the Westboro Baptist "church",,, that's a hateful group.

Yep, next county over from me. It was, I think, one of those small store front type churches. Still doesn't say much for a "progressive" city like Tampa claims to be.

ok, I'm insanely excited cuz I figured out how to post pics here from my iPod touch. This is Ava. She always sleeps with her tongue out.

That is a cute doggy! We need more pics.!

This makes me want to tuck in myself. Maybe she has hot flashes. Dogs sweat through their tongues, right? Sympathy hot flash!

she's a rescue dog and missing a few front teeth. I think her tongue slips out when she's sleeps because of that. It's so cute. She's the sweetest dog.

I remember when you first posted. She does look sweet. Love rescue dogs!

flannelette: can you see an icon (above) that looks like a square with "scenery" in it? on my screen, it is towards the right side of the above icons. Like the smiley face will give you the emoticons, etc.If you click on that, it should take you to another place where it will say insert image. click on choose file and it should let you search for the pic you want in your computer. Then I think it asks if you want to "insert" it,, or something like that. Hope that helps!! I'm on my work computer now,, so no piccies here, and the browser is old so the above icons are a little different than on an updated browser.

I can post from Firefox but not from Safari, so that might be it.
Flannelette, We had 5 bottle baby kittens this year. All black, so we called them by their ribbon collars. They are with different foster parents now. We can't keep them after they're up and exploring. There's a shelter near Seattle called Purrfect Pals. One of their foster parents has a kitten cam. It's 24/7 - his foster mom and kittens.

Yes, Flannelette - And cats. I don't think dogs or cats worry about whether there is a heaven. When they are well loved they just think the world is here ---- today - - - to please me.

My BFF's favorite movie is All Dogs Go to Heaven.
After all,, if there are no dogs (or cats) in heaven,,,,, then what's a heaven for??
