Elizabeth, I know it's sappy but I honestly believe that we're all living in the movie, "It's a Wonderful Life." The world would have been a very different place without you in it. I've known you for only a few days and you've given me much comfort and food for thought.

I didn't have children either and while I don't regret it, I sometimes wonder if I'd feel more "complete" if I had. But then again, I could have given birth to a sniper! LOL I know everyone measures their own worth/success in different ways. Perhaps my goals are more modest.

I don't think I ever expected to make a big mark on the world. It's enough for me that I managed not to kill anyone (yet) along the way, and that I made a lot of people's lives a little better--even if it was just for a brief period of time.

You are fully entitled to feel a little woe-is-me, but might I suggest a little retail therapy, a nice glass of wine and/or some CAKE? <grin> If you like movies, I really enjoyed Pixar's "Up," although it did make me and my husband cry a bit.

    Big hugs, Cindy

Geri - If in fact you are not religious or have a religion, why would you say you are a Christian? Being that the Topic is "Is anyone else an Atheist" why would you even post here? Maybe you need to "turn the other cheek" and stay off the atheist forum...just a thought.

Geri, it seems like you think your original post was some sort of neutral comment and that we can all choose to believe what we want. But the whole thing was basically a sales pitch for believing in God. Can't you see that?

When you say, "My God is awesome!" and "If you want to find peace, talk to Him about it and He will show you the way," you are acting like a pushy saleswoman. What's worse, you're doing it in a store that doesn't stock your product.

What's even more awful is that you're doing this in the middle of a thread in which a terminally ill woman is asking for comfort from her peers...other atheists. I can't put it any plainer: You were being incredibly rude, which is why I was rude back.

    Geri -

    - Money didn't have "In God We Trust" on it until 1964.

    - Your daughter can pray all she wants in public school, as I was taught in church that God is capable of hearing the silent prayers in our hearts as clearly as any prayer spoken loudly in front of a group.

    - I am sorry if people have been trashing or stealing nativity sets--that is a crime in this country and not something sanctioned by any laws or government agencies.

I am sorry if you are offended by the responses to your first post, but it seemed preachy and condescending to me.

"Sige-I DID SAY we all have a choice.  Why get so mad???  If you want to put your faith in a rock go ahead.  I truly hope it brings you peace and assurance of life everlasting.  I really do!!  Iam not trying to convert anyone!!  Iwas just sharing my thoughts and raising some questions.  So far I have not heard any concrete answers to any of them.  Just alot of angry women!  You can't even accept an apology!  WOW!"

I get so mad Geri because you coming here (and not just you, but others who judge and preach) is inappropriate.  The nature of this thread isn't "please tell us why we are so unhappy as atheists" or "wondering if I will go to hell as an atheist".  It's simply a thread calling for other like-minded people to join in a conversation.  And in my opinion, christians who come here to simply question are not the problem.  The ones that come here and preach are the problem.

And concrete answers???  You believe in a god you can't see and in a book that is man made and you want concrete answers from us?  Give me a break.  Nothing you say about the bible and your god is concrete IMO.

The bottom line is why should we have to answer your questions about why we don't believe the way you do??

This is not a forum about Christianity!  It as about atheists and agnostics.  Would you like it if we went to the Power of Prayer or other Christian fora and talk about our beliefs and tell you how wonderful they are, how much you are missing out on?  Yes or no?  Please tell me that.

And just how quick would one be banned if one of us prayed to Mother Earth in the Power of Prayer thread or another non-christian entity?  Since my thoughts expressed here are very off-topic on the Christian threads, why would I post there like you do here?  Tell me please why it is polite for the Christians to post off topic here?   We are respecting your choices and not infringing on the Christian threads with our non-Christian beliefs.  Why can't you do the same for us here?

Why not create a topic about Christianity vs other beliefs, then your posts would be appropriate.

    Can you please answer this?

IvoryMom -- you are so very right.  And you have shown care for everyone, regardless of their beliefs.  Thank-you.

It is so sad, that some people think they are doing a good thing by trying to make me (all of us)feel that I am wrong, something's wrong with me because I have different beliefs. Exactly how is this helping me deal with my journey?

"Spirituality" is so personal and I am so happy to share my feelings with friends here that don't judge me.  I don't often share these thoughts.  Atheism, and especially agnostism, cover a very broad fabric of beliefs.  I'm sure that some may roll their eyes at some of my thoughts but noone here (other than some Christians posting) has made me feel like I'm a second class citizen, I'm a big loser, not worthy of whatever.

How can these people who come here and say I am a "lost soul", question how I can manage without their god, and consider themselves good people?   It is hurtful. It is nasty and mean.

On another topic -- I love "It's a Wonderful Life" -- thank-you for mentioning that Cindy!  Yes, the average person does have an impact in ways they don't realize.  I do laugh how his wife, having not met him becomes a lonely old librarian with unplucked brows.  I'm a lonely not-old librarian!

I bet they get a microwave oven everytime they bring a heathen like me to tears.  Way to go ladies!  Thank-you very much for your "Christian love and caring".  I'm sure you're very proud of yourself.  I don't think Jesus would be pleased though...

I gotta hug my cat.  This sucks, sorry for being so whiny, but this holier than thou thing really got to me today.  Yesterday I was angry, now I'm sad.  Weren't these emotional waves removed with my ovaries???

Atheist chiming in here too (wow, did I get here just in time to bring the subject back to atheists and agnostics? LOL).

Sooooo....I don't believe in anything supernatural of any kind -- it's not limited to not believing in God or organized religions, but I also don't believe in ghosts, spirits, immortal souls, ESP/telepathy, astrology, "higher planes," angels, or life after death in any way shape or form. To me, anything which has an "existence" that can be proven ONLY by faith, that is, without the evidence of the senses and logic based on such evidence, is outside of reality.

As for what other people believe (or not) -- that's their own business. True, I'm heartened when I encounter those whose "beliefs" are akin to mine, but in the case of disagreements, I don't start or allow myself to be drawn into "arguments" about it either. Nobody is required to share my opinions, and it's of no consequence to me what someone else's religious beliefs might be because it doesn't affect me and my choices.  Live and let live, you know?

Hope you're all feeling okay. :-)

    ~Lena.

Fumi, the markings on your beautiful cats are, indeed, quite remarkable -- thanks for posting!  If I could figure out how to post a bigger pic of my two felines, I would!

Welcome to all the brave ladies who have recently joined us.  Together we can withstand any onslaught!!!

Occasionally my doorbell will ring, and when I answer it is two young men dressed in black suits wanting to come in and discuss their religion with me. I always tell them I am not interested. Invariably, they very politely thank me and leave. They do not come back and ring my doorbell and insist on telling me about their beliefs. Wish all denominations trained their people to be as polite.

Well, Debbie, if you're upset about *having* to see a thread with the word "atheist" in the title in the Recent Postings, imagine how we feel *having* to see thread after thread after thread about prayers and miracles and God. But you don't see me running into those threads to "cause shit for everybody else" now do you? I live and let live.

I would suppose that you also have problems with the discussion threads that support other minorities, such as lesbians and African-Americans? (Even Canadians?) <grin>

Oh, in case you missed it, we've all been trying to offer support to one of our friends here who is just a little bit sad around the edges because she has mets and will probably die of this damned disease. That's why we're here.

(I know I'm new to this thread, but does anyone else think we might be better placed on BC.org as a separate topic area under Support and Community? Or would that just increase our visibility?) (Not that visibility is a bad thing...)

BTW, Layne, I love your thrifty thoughts about reincarnation. That option has always been attractive to me. It would explain why some people seem like "old souls," while others seem so terribly, horribly young.

Jo,  You are preaching.  And you are wrong.  Atheism is not a religion.  Your words come across as judgmental and angry.  You speak of heaven and hell as fact.  Heaven and hell are simply a part of your belief system, not mine, not Dawnn's and not many others.  But what strikes me the most strongly about your posts is that you lack kindness and empathy for we women who are gathered here to talk about a frightening happening in our lives.  If you can't be welcoming and supportive, please step back.

I have read the bible.  I was raised on the bible.  I believe in many things.  I believe in love, compassion, humor, family, friends, medicine and science.  Try tolerance and kindness.

Chumfry - I would agree with you.  Perhaps this thread would be better served if moved to a different category...Support and Community would be good!

Debbie...I notice you shared a cute little joke on another thread...a Woman's Ass Size Study.  If this is a "place for woman to come and talk about breast cancer and how to deal with it and talk about what crappy things we are going thru" (and I quote you word for word) then why would you post something like that?  I personally don't have a problem with the joke, but it really has nothing to do with bc and if you feel the way you do about superfluous chit chat, then it should go both ways...no?  I'm just sayin' ...

I don't usually get involved with this debating garbage, but I've just about had it.  And if this thread gets dumped by the mods because of this, they better be prepared to dump all the christian threads too.

Hi.  I just now read your post about your biopsy - your sense of humor has probably helped you in a huge way during this struggle.  I am a believer, but no need to 'go there' ; the thing that has helped each of us is the milk of human kindness.  We find it here, for sure, right?  I have had to learn to recognize the little gifts all along the way - a silly baby, a stranger's smile, a 'good' day.  These are things that have helped me; things that I might have been too busy to notice if I hadn't been slowed down by bc.  But....when all is said and done, I HATE this disease; faith or no faith.  So...keep laughing, hugging, and hopefully you will always have a warm body near you when you need it most.  Best to ya!  Marykay

My gosh.  I go away for a few days and look what happens.

    Cindy/Chumfry--Good job.

Layne--Like you I usually have good parking karma but would gladly trade it for better clerical karma.  (If someone, anyone,  can make a mistake on my paperwork, he/she will.)

Now, I take all the religious postings as a personal challenge to keep this post in a prominent position.  As noted before, some of us chose not to rely on religion and take comfort in knowing that there are many others who feel the same way, so please don't try to convert us.  Having cancer is difficult.

Konacat--I like the idea of taking a harpoon for a whale, but then I have been accused of looking for martyrdom (spelling?)

    Fumi--Thanks for joining us.
