Is anyone else an atheist with BC besides me?

TB90, aw, thanks.
Isn't it a lousy kind of deity who has hissy fits if they don't get enough attention, and craps all over people just for fun? There's a great book by Sir Terry Pratchett in his Discworld fantasy series called "Small Gods." In it, a god's powers are related to how many believers they have, so they are in constant competition with each other (sounds a bit like social media!). It's hilarious and brilliant. Pratchett was an atheist who wrote extremely well about religious and moral matters within his fictitious world - I highly recommend him. Here's an example of his writing, this time on economics.

Yes, Alice, being poor is expensive.

Aargh! I just saw a post in a FB group in which a woman expresses relief that her purse has been found, ending with "Thank you, Jesus." I had to come over here to keep myself from asking if she also blamed Jeeeesus for the purse's disappearance in the first place, and if not, why not. I wonder if any of them would pass a logic course, or if their minds are too warped.

Perhaps the woman thinks Jesus is a petty thief.

Today when I reached for my credit card to pay for dental work, it was not in its usual place. Never thought to ask a god to find it, I was able to use my intellect and trace my steps. Fortunately, it was at the last restaurant I visited and I thanked the staff - a real person -for keeping it safe.

Have you read any of Sir Terry Pratchett's Discworld fantasy series? They have gods for anything and everything, and they're mostly incompetent little entities who can't get it right. I particularly like Bilious, the Oh God of Hangovers. But I'm sure there's a credit card god, who is probably more useful at losing them than finding them. I find it much easier to believe in the possibility of pesky everyday gods like that than some big bad sky daddy. Maybe there's an Oh Crap god of cancer that we can blame! 🙂

I like that idea, Alice. Stupid little SOB gave me cancer? I kick his sorry ass from here till Tuesday.
Strangely enough I feel better already.

My friend who has NSCLC refers to her cancer cells as "the little assholes."

Google (LOL) indicates that there have been 8000 to 12000 gods worshipped throughout history. So many to choose from. I have trouble deciding with only 31 Flavors at Baskin Robbins ice cream!

Haven't logged in since before Festivus (like that, never heard of the term before), just read through the posts I've missed, had a good laugh, you guys really keep me sane.
Alice I love that.. the 'Oh Crap god of cancer'! This cancer god doesn't discriminate about who it will give cancer to, it hands it out to young and old, rich and poor. You'd think the idea would appeal to the Christians, they could keep imagining their god is good, and if sh!t happens they can blame the cancer god.0 -
I'll bet the Oh Crap god of cancer glows in the dark from all the radiation, and emits Technicolor fumes from chemo. And of course it's an androgynous god since anyone can get cancer.

I live in NSW in Australia where the majority of bush fires have been, the last few months have been shocking, the loss of lives and homes, power outages, water shortage, and we have developed coughs from breathing smoke all the time.
I can't believe what I just read. This pathetic attempt at humour from Jeremy Clarkson, he says Australia is not meant for humans as 'biblical' bushfires ravage the country."Jeremy Clarkson has written a column in which he says that God is embarrassed by Australia "because he has decided to set fire to it".
In the column for The Sun, the former Top Gear host says that "God didn't want people to live in Australia" and suggests Australian residents "come home"."

I am so sorry about the fires WorryThePooh. The thought of all the wildlife and people who have been lost is heartbreaking.

Oh Pooh...I’m so sorry. I can’t imagine what it’s been like.
God is embarrassed by Australia? What in the french fried fuck is that supposed to mean? Not supposed to live there? That is ridiculous, infuriating, and downright cruel to people who are already suffering so much.
Ugh. He doesn’t know what to do so let’s blame the imaginary sky daddy. We must have pissed the big guy off somehow. Can’t they hear how stupid they sound?
Well, I can’t worry about all the morons in the world. The important thing is your wellbeing.
Keep us posted as best you can and stay safe. I’ll be watching anxiously for the end of this tragedy.

Worry I can relate, am from the other wildfire capital of the globe, southern California.....

Worry the Pooh...you did not say how you and your family have been impacted by these disastrous fires. Obviously, folks in this group will not send 'thoughts and prayers' however, compassion is definitely an integral part of our human community. As an outsider I get my news online and hope that the Australian Red Cross is a safe, non-religious source for emergency relief. I do believe that dollars to legitimate agencies will do more than prayers.

Pooh, I was wondering how you were doing. I have a friend in Victoria who has been penned up inside for days because the air outside is so bad. To make it worse her DD was visiting for Christmas. They have a boat and haven't taken it out because of the fires and fire-caused weather. I worry because she really only has one road out of there.
The guy who said Australia wasn't meant for people should set an example and leave. Maybe his followers would follow.

What does he mean, Australia wasn't meant for people. It has be inhabited by aboriginal peoples for 65,000 years.

The native ppl there were, and still are treated very badly by the white settlers. Like here with brown skin ppl.

Thanks everyone, where I live we are not in direct danger of the fires, although there is always the possibility of an ember attack setting trees alight.
Wren44 sorry to hear of your friend's plight. The smoke is having a huge impact on our health and ability to do normal things. There has not been much of a celebratory mood in Australia these Christmas holidays, with everyone in horror at what is happening.
Lauren you always cheer me up, 'let's blame the imaginary sky daddy' made me laugh out loud.
Yes ananda8 that shows how ridiculous his comments are, he suggests Australian residents "come home", so in his view the only Australians are of British heritage, completely ignoring the Aboriginal and native people, as well as another 30% of other European ethnicities.0 -
Still scraping my jaw off the floor at the evil inanity of that Jeremy Clarkson person (?), whoever the hell he is.

If this is Jeremy Clarkson's idea of God plan -

Bad, sky daddy!

I know this is a heartfelt and serious thread, but I lmao every time I check in. Thanks for making me smile despite the fact that I offer nothing. Just not as witty and wise as you ladies.

But my heart does ache for the people and wildlife of Australia. ❤️

Maybe there is a sign of a turn around from relying on thoughts and prayers, as evidenced by the approximately $100 million raised to date to assist Australians in tangible ways. I cannot imagine the emotional/physical/psychic devastation being experienced. Will some people turn to prayer? Sure they will and I am glad they have that as one of their coping strategies. It sure seems to be useful to many and as a non-believer I do not fault them for that, I simply ask that those believers do not tread on my right to not believe nor to force me to abide by your religious edicts.

Well said MrOzAtheist.
And very well said magiclight!0 -
The fires in Australia are devastating and seeing all the burned animals is heart wrenching. I will never understand people denying climate change but accepting that prayer will solve these terrible natural disasters.
