Pew Research just put out a Religious Knowledge Quiz. I thought some might like to take it. If you want, tell us your score.

I looked at the questions...did not know that purgatory was still a thing.

Yep, Catholics can still reduce their sentence in Purgatory by good works and donations to charitable causes.

Ananda...Hmmmm. Is the key word 'buy' as in purchase. From what I've read, one cannot buy them however, charitable contributions are encouraged. According an article in the NYTimes:

'You cannot buy one โ€” the church outlawed the sale of indulgences in 1567 โ€” but charitable contributions, combined with other acts, can help you earn one. There is a limit of one plenary indulgence per sinner per day.'

Before the 12th century there was no purgatory. The Wikipedia page on purgatory is quite informative.

Those pesky Catholics will do anything to keep the money rolling in! My hubby is one, but he will only donate on a parish level until they clean up the scandals higher up.

Trini...welcome and would love to hear more of your thoughts.

I did not take the test, but reviewed the questions and found that as both an avid reader and 16 years of Catholic education, know a thing or two about the Catholic stuff as well as that found in the major national newspapers. Religion is a hot topic of late.

Question: What is the correlation between knowledge of religion and 1) compassion; 2) bias; 3) kindness, 4) superstition, etc etc.?

OK, I got a problem with one of their questions. They claim that Buddhists believe that the Buddha was perfect and free from sin. Yes when he achieved enlightenment, but not throughout his entire life. He was born a prince and lived a lush and lusty lifestyle. Then he became disillusioned with his wealthy life, renounced his inheritance and status, and turned to introspection and the search for an inner truth. Just saying "Buddha was perfect and free from sin" implies that it was for his WHOLE life, when that is simply not true according to his story.

The fact that he overcame the lure of the pleasures of the material world after knowing just how pleasurable life can be is part of why his enlightenment is so important. He wasn't penniless because he was poor. He was penniless because he chose to not have pennies.

Miriandra, I agree with your comments about the Buddha but I think you may have misread the question. It asked "Which of the following is one of Buddhism's four "noble truths"?" The status of the Buddha as enlightened is not one of the 4 Noble Truths. They are about suffering.

    1. There is suffering.

    2. There is a cause of suffering.

    3. There is a way to end suffering.

    4. The way to end suffering is through the Eightfold Path.

Happy to see another who has knowledge about Buddhism. Metta to you.

Ah, I did misread it. I thought it said, "Which of the following is NOT one of Buddhism's four "noble truths"?", so I went with the perfection answer.

    Thanks!

14/15.ย  I missed the one about salvation through faith alone. I said Catholic but it was Protestant. I could really use the room that this useless knowledge takes up in my brain, haha.ย

Talking about useless knowledge, I also know the names of Beyonce's and Kim Khardasian's children - without ever having seen "Keeping up with the Khardasians" or listening to Beyonce's music. How do I accumulate all this useless (and totally uninteresting to me) knowledge? That's why I said Osmosis.

Which is not to say the study of Religion is useless (it should not appear in the same sentence as celebrity babies), clearly I need to get off my computer.

I'm in the emergency room ๐Ÿ˜ฉ
Today is not turning into a very good day. I decided to return to horseback riding to re-live childhood memories. It was a stellar thought.... I got on the horse and started out everything was fine, like riding a bike..., but then we went a little faster; before I knew it, we were in a dead run. At this point, something spooked the horse and he made a sudden jerk and reared up, and I couldn't hold on. I fell off, but my foot got caught in the stirrup. The horse kept bucking and running, and was dragging me and wouldn't stop. Thank goodness the manager of the grocery store came out and unplugged the machine! But then he had the nerve to take the rest of my quarters so I wouldn't try the other games. If you actually read what I wrote, copy and paste for someone else to smile for a second.

Ha ha! (But true story - when I was 16 this happened to me on a real horse. It got spooked by a long horn steer that decided to charge us. My foot got caught in the stirrup and I nearly got my head crushed by the horse's hooves before I was able to pull free!)

I was reading Ananda8's post closely because I also had an ornery horse incident, when I was in my early 20s. Damn rent-a-horse headed straight for a tree with a low branch, and although I laid back (I was raised watching westerns!), I still got knocked off and dragged a bit before I got loose from the stirrup. I was MAD! The horse made it back to the barn, the owner was trying to apologize, and I just kept walking to where that horse was. I hauled off and punched it in the nose (I didn't say I had watched GOOD westerns!). The owner was so scared of me that he was holding out everybody's horse rental fees, but I was nice and just took mine. ๐Ÿ‡๐ŸŽ

The first time on a horse was when I was on a camping trip with my husband some friends. We were going to camp in the Sierra Mountains of California and had to pack in by horse. The trail began at 7,500ft and went to 10,000ft in under 5mi. One section of trail ran across huge granite boulders. This one had a tree growing near it with a dead branch sticking out over the trail. The horse either was concerned for his footing or just wanted to brush me off so he went so close to the branch that it struck my thigh. I had a bruise so bad it covered most of my thigh. I should have punched the horse, but he probably would have stomped me into the ground. It was still a great trip.
