Stargate the movie, seems a complete possibility to me, does that make me crazy?

I really think the bible is a series of misinterpreted teachings, initiated by the "experimenters", to help us cope with life. The non-literal messages will never be known.  In science matter changes....We know what happens to our bodies, but what about our spirit?  Our individual uniqueness.  Does that change into something else as well?  Maybe that's the meaning behind the resurrection. Maybe we do become pure consciousness when we die.  Wouldn't that be a trip.

Science and religion can reconcile.  All that's required is a lil logic, and some free thinking.  I haven't studied all religions, but I think if we extract from them, the teachings correlate.

Logic and free thinking -- ain't it the truthUndecided.  Now, if only more people would indulge in that.....

I hate to admit it, but I was once a member of church that actively promoted proselytizing. And I got such a rush from "sharing the good news." It felt like I was carving notches in my gun belt for God. Ack. I was about 13 years old and luckily came to my senses by the time I turned 15.

So I can see why some people do that, but it doesn't make it any less annoying. In most cases, the person stops when I ask them to, so I usually don't have to get mean about it.

I have a friend from high school who has followed several different religions. She's definitely searching for something to fill a hole in her life. Many of her brothers and sisters have done the same, so I wonder if there was something about their upbringing or their genetics that left them with this "hole."

I wonder why I'm different. Did I never have that hole? Or did I fill it with something else?

I am a Christian, and wouldn't think of trying to change anyones minds, your all adults and can choose as you please but I do have to say something about socalisa's comment.  For us Christians there is no empty hole, it is that we are so full of joy, peace, and the holy spirit that it spills out and runs over.  So you have it backwards.  peace.

dragonfly, you can really only speak for yourself in regards to how your faith manifests itself for you.  Believe me, the family member I speak of is still trying to fill a deep dark place.....she's still writing and now she wants to explore our whole miserable childhood.  I have asked her to put a sock in it for now as I have to turn my focus to my diagnosis and treatment.  I "pray" she will.

...speaking of the pyramids and their awesomeness..........does anyone have any thoughts on the Mayan calendar ending as of Dec 22, 2012?  I've read so many "theories"--everything from a huge asteroid that will smash the planet earth to smithereens to some kind of global event that will totally destroy life as we know it--a catastrophic war or weather events.........

I've traveled to the Yucatan many times and toured the ruins at Chitzen Itza and Tulum several times.  Quite inspiring.

just curious, as it seems to fit the trend of discussion here.

Well, in the scheme of things, how long the earth lasts is pretty much a speck of dust in universal time...even our solar system and galaxy will be gone at some point...western thinking tends to deal with  beginnings and endings...maybe universal  time is circular, forever changing...

You're not alone Lisa.  The only way I can make sense of it is that yesterday is still happening relative to where one (an observer) is in the universe.  Then there's that darn complication of travelling at the speed of light and the theory that time and space is dimensional.  My head is starting to hurt so I'll just leave it at that.  hehe

After reading this topic for a few days, I would like to pass on a link to a site that made my day the first time I read it. It seems just so logical to me.  See what you think.

(First: just as you said, SoCalLisa.) The 2012 thing is quite interesting.  Personally, and I will now sit my butt on the crazy bench, I wonder if it might be the year we finally make contact with off planet life!  Since I was a teenager, I have hoped it would happen in my lifetime!  As I'm sure it will happen sooner or later.  I figure when that event happens, then all organized religions will pretty much become irrelevent.

Very interesting, Sheila. Sometimes I forget that there have been unbelievers throughout history. I think it probably took a lot more guts to publicize your unbelief back in the 19th Century. Not to mention the threat of being burned at the stake in the Middle Ages!

Sheila, thanks for sending the link to the works of Ingersoll.  I had read some of his stuff before, but it's nice to have it all together on one website.

Dawnn, that picture and caption -- just too, too funny for words!!!

Fell off the floor laughing at your pic, Dawn.

Chumfry, Samuel Clemens--Mark Twain--was also a doubter but wasn't as vocal as R.I. was at the time. I found this essay quite logical too,  What Would You Substitute For The Bible?

    Food for thinkers, hmmm?

Meg--Thanks for the WSJ article. I found it very interesting, especially with regard to conceptualizing "the God behind God" as transcendent enlightenment, an art form perhaps, a spiritual exercise. I will read it again, when my brain is less foggy from chemo (that should happen, right?).

Dawnn--The photo of the Atheist Cat was a scream! I copied it and sent it to some heathen cat lovers; they will probably have it framed!

Dawn, that photo is hilarious!  I've forwarded it to my family members who will all get a kick out of it!

Sheila, I LOVE that article.  It's especially enjoyable after a lifetime of hearing Bible thumpers quote it left and right.  It's really just a storybook.

I returned from my Cancer Wellness Retreat and it was wonderfully relaxing, fun and beautiful in the mtns of NC.  I met some amazing people.

I have a little discharge from my remaining breast and have an appt with the surgeon next Friday to discuss a 2nd mastectomy.  I hate being so lopsided, so it might be a good thing.  And believe it or not, I'd prefer another mastectomy than the needle in the nipple test my oncologist is suggesting.  EWWWWWWW.....  So I've had a few Xanex days lately, but handling it well so far.

It's so good to be home and back on the boards.  This has become my favorite thread.

    Welcome back, Denali.

I have TONS of pictures & jokes. I am afraid most are just too offensive and the whole thread would be stoned or burned....

My oldest daughter still enjoys getting a rise out of people she takes every opportunity to send me her handy work....

I tell her she is evil & going to hell...she just laughs.Photobucket

Isn't that cute how they all voted to remove the picture of the cat?? Why? Because it said "Jesus"!!???

I didn't go into a prayer thread & post it, or try to convince you that your views of the world and evolution were narrow minded & bigoted. I posted it in a atheist thread!! Did it offend the atheists?

The same people who aren't perfect, but want everyone else to be?

So very sad. Regardless of how you "report this post" button girls may feel, I know I have brought laughter & love to many girls....

I am so certain of what a wonderful loyal funny loving person I am....I feel sorry for those of you that will ever get to know me because you think you have the right to judge.

Best wishes ladies, I bow out. I don't leave out of anger, but out of disappointment. Someone start the OncoDx thread over & maintain it, it is more important than the right some ladies think they have to judge others. What would Jesus do indeed???

    Best wishes, Dawn
