My father told me this story. When he was a boy his family lived in a house with a legend behind it. It happened on Christmas Day somewhere in Texas. The legend goes when the house was first built in the late 1800s a stranger, in the middle of the night, knocked on the front door looking for shelter. It was cold and snowing hard that night. Without opening the door, the owner listened to the stranger tell him he was afraid he was being followed by Indians and asked if he could spend the night there. The owner refused and told the stranger to leave! The next day they found his mutilated body in a field not far from the house! From then on, every Christmas Day at midnight there would be a knocking on the front door, and when you opened it, there'll be nobody there!

People say it's the spirit of the stranger wanting to be let in! So on Christmas day in 1933 my father waited up with the rest of the family to see if the legend was true. A little past twelve midnight they heard a knocking on the front door, which made my father's sisters run to their rooms! Even though he was scared, my father opened the door. There was nobody there, but without hesitating my fathers' dad (my grandfather) called out and said, "Come in, come in, you're more than welcome. Come sit by the fire. You must be cold!" There was a chair in front of the fireplace and my father said he saw it rock just a little!

After that night the knockings stopped. My father understood that by his dads' invitation, the strangers' spirit can finally rest. My father was sure of that for in the new year in the spring when the snow melted away there was a message carved on the trunk of the tree in front of the house. It simply said,"Thank you for your kindness."

julz..... so frustrating to lose a lengthy post.......

we'll just ask spar's ghostly friends to conjure it back together for us!

Spar, before I forget it -- I loved hearing about your children doing such generous acts of kindness for others. Random acts of kindness, indeed.

And also before I forget........ Sahalie, were you talking about giraffes the other night? My screen had the red x monster swipe the image. Did I tell you that's the subject of  my upcoming book?

I'm producing it with my sister and it's entitled, "Tall Giraffe." (based on the song by that title I recorded several years back.) TOMORROW I'll start working on the sign language page.... one of the remaining pieces.

BTW: beachies, I got my bike out and rode it a namby-pamby 4 miles on flat ground today, just to get warmed up and to see how my back was going to be able to handle. so far so good. tomorrow a little more and maybe one hill. LOL

Margo..... you are the earliest of the early birds! You don't even sleep in on the weekend?

Spar........ what an awesome tradition with your grands -- memories they'll have forever!!

Footie....... know that I always have you in the center of my heart, praying, asking for help to sort out all of the issues that antagonize and demoralize: the insurance nonsense, the fence, the ramp, the church people who are falling short, and of course the ever plaguing LE issues. That you continue to put on your 'chipper' face and upbeat attitude in the face of all of this is truly an inspiration to me. Thank you for your continued example. Lemonade being the perfect word to capture your resillience in the face of challenges. How we all wish that we lived closer -- to be able to actually contribute some assistance. Know that we circle you in our hearts.

SAINT...... there's a big Arts weekend here in Sister Bay starting shortly. Literature and artists. They were setting up all of the little tents last night. Can hardly wait. I think you should get thyself on that INTERSTATE and get up here..... supposed to have events tomorrow too.

Sahalie........ can't thank you enough for your exhuberant surfing extravaganza yesterday. I just loved coming on and finding all of those colors and enthusiasm. Hope you enjoyed the campfire and ghost stories that Spar and I cooked up for ya.

Jasmine....... are you headed to the lake today with your watercolors? Can't wait to see what you come up with. You're inspiring me, too. LOVED your lengthy, individual post last night.

Shrink.......... we'll probably here giggles all weekend from your cabana. Now, you're just showing off. LOL. So happy for your happiness.

Lisa......... maybe I'll get my camera out for today's festivities and attempt to capture some of the fun to share here -- you're another inspiration..... somethings gone putzy w/my camera tho, cuz the little shutters over the lense don't stay open as they should. Time to get the next generation.

CELIA, my talented CELIA............. I hope that your energy and wit return in triplicate. How was your Creamry visit? Sounded like the perfect Friday night escapade with hubby.

    Who am I missing?

WIngers........... sending you light. So eager for your return. Your sense of humor. Missing it. School's about ready to start and so your life may calm down a bit?

If I'm thinking MI, I'm thinking nEEsie!! I know you had a grand time at pinkstock.... so sorry that I had a concert on Sat or I'd planned to be there..... but then my sister's family was at our place due to the funeral in her family -- so I suppose I wouldn't have been able to go at the last minute and that would have been even harder. Love the pics. Love the rainbow! Amazing.

Sige........... please tell us the tidbits about yourself that you'd like to share. I just rambled on about me a few pages back for Julz...... so I hope that is an introduction of sorts to moi.

JULZ........ that's who I was forgetting. Hope that you have some grand fun planned for all of your tribe. I'm attempting to remember...... don't you still have a 'young' one under foot? AND a grand child...... you're living life in the extreme lane, sweetie.

to all of our angels who read here at the beach....... soak up the sun and camraderie...... it's a special place and we're fortunate to make a splash together!!

    xx00xx00xx00xx00xx

p.s. DH's REAL, no kidding, birthday today. EXTREME fun-in-the-sun.

He used his golf gps gizmo for the first time yesterday and he's like a little boy with a new toy. It's FANTASTIC! or so he reports..... it gives him the EXACT distance to the hole, which I suppose helps with club selection -- and is a vast support to his game. (who knew?)

I've been wondering why my knees ache so much.  Must have been those waves.  I'll have to look for some tamer surf next time.

My 3 year old granddaughter asked me if I go to the beautyshop and get my hair cut.  I said that I did and she asked, "Why does your hair look so crazy then?"  I was wearing a wig the last time she was here.  She's a trip.  When she woke up after her nap at 7 PM, she told me that you can't eat dinner after it's dark.  You can only eat snacks.  Just thought I'd share since I still have to learn to post pictures.  Oh, and when I asked what she wanted to be when she grows up, she said, "Four."

Plenty of giggles going on.  They just left and I'm cleaning fingerprints from everywhere and then I'm going to the beach to recoup. My DH was great, making breakfast for everyone and playing with his step-grandchildren.  I've decided to keep him.

Spar, that pic was taken at Sturgis, SD in 2006.  It was taken at the Buffalo Chip Campground, which has been considered Party Central for 25 years.  It was a blast.

Faith, yay!  You got out on your green machine!!!!!

I love all the scary stories.  I actually had 2 Native American spirits with me for about 15 years.  I saw them and our youngest son saw them.  I wasn't afraid at all.  I don't feel their presence anymore.  I miss them.  A psychic told me about them, but at that point I had already been aware of them.

Late to the Beach this morning but have already been out for morning walk and yard watering.

The beach is alive with all sorts of goings ons.

Janny.  I just may take you up on your offer of help.  Wink wink.

    Speaking of spirits.

We were hit at the hip yesterday by the dark side.  "Influenza" made a call.

Happy to read all is well.  Faith is having a trip on her trip.

Janny your picture is the bomb. I love it.  Wait till Paulo and Fernando see you.

Shrink.  I hope you are writing down all your darling granddaughters isms.  So cute.

Glad to read you are keeping new dh.  He is a gem.

Spar.  Whoa.  Those pictures!  So you all told ghost stories on the beach last night?

How fun and I totally missed it.  I logged on late to check on someone we all know who is

hurting but stayed away last night in case the influenza reared again.

Lotta Bismil Pepto did the trick.

Great pictures Spar.  I get scared though.  I love edge of your seat type movies though.

Not the cut em up types but the psychological kind.

Like "Pacific Heights" with Melanie Griffith and her cute husband who buy one of

our Victorian ladies in San Francisco and fix her up and rent out the rooms.

Then psycho what's his name moves in and stirs them all up in a not very good way.

Now that was a edge of the seater.  Loved it.

Also "Panic Room" with Jodie Foster where she and daughter live in great big NY

townhouse with Panic room.  Neatereenie.  Love those types.  Dwight Yokum was one of

the derelict bad guys and was a complete surprise to find out it was him at the end.

    Anyone else see it.

Faith.  I love the giraffes.  Thanks for letting me know about the red x.

Darn that is a great watercolor of a giraffes head too.  Not mine.  I'd be glad to offer tidbits

of help for your project.  Just let me know the direction you want to go and I'll throw some

    things out to you.

    Jazz.  Where you be?

Julz.  I hope work was good last night and I'm sure you made your family of people in your care

feel comfy and gave them a smile.   You are so needed in your profession.

I am so happy you found the Beach and are here.  Did you pick up you free personalized

flip flops from us as a welcome gift?

Foots.   Hey Beachbabe we still have to tell the girls our idea for the weekend as it is right

here on our sand dune isn't it.

OK beach babes.  We thought it would be fun to have a beach slumber party!

Jazz was great with the PJ's and that fits right in with a slumber party on the beach.

I actually camped on the beach on Maui once and all night kept thinking the tide would come

in and take me out to sea.

In the morning I woke up to little sand crabbies with googly eyes and walking sideways.

I'll never forget that.  It was hilarious.

Then we traipsed up to the Haleakala Crater and were blown away by it's desert type beauty.

    I digress.

So once small hitch in my gitty up for the slumber party.

I have dinner guests coming tonight so you guys could have fun and I could join you tomorrow

early to splash water on everyone.

    I'll be ready.

    What say you.

    XOXO

    Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh girlfriends............................

Just have spent a lovely chunk of time right on our 'water-front' a block from our little house-ette. (Better than camping, not really a house at all, tho..... we do have a dishwasher and brand new garbage disposal in our newly upgraded kitchen. We bought it from a 94 year old who'd been here since day #1.)

disgressing indeed: our Arts fair downtown was the Berries!! Super duper berries!! It's obviously "juried" as everyone was of such a high calibar. ANDDDDDDDDDDDDD everyone with a booth was required to have 2 thirty minute demonstrations. How cool is that? I just spent an hour watching a water-colorist working on a piece. She was soooooooooooo fantastic -- to be able to speak and work and answer questions. What an inspiration!!!!!

Crummy button for today: my silly camera's battery decided to poop out right in the midst of me attempting to capture some of the feel of the day. We ran home to recharge and I'll go back in a bit..... just enough to grab a few pics.

Lisa: what do you recommend? Any suggestions? DH seems in the mood to 'upgrade' but I have NO idea what to even look for. Anything you feel would be helpful to know would be welcome input.

Happy hallelujah for today: So one of the demonstrations was allowing you/ME to paint a silk scarf!! Oh happy day!!!!! they had all of the materials (pre-finished scarves, paints, stretcher forms etc etc etc brushes, swabs, markers and on and on..... oh and SALT!! who knew how significant salt is to the process???) So as Allen's birthday gift (LOLOL) I spent a lovely chunk of the sunny afternoon creating my own creation. WHAT FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We all need to have a silk painting extravaganza festival. I'm HOOKED. Oh it was so much fun. I'm gonna look into the expense of the materials. What a great project. AND it's DONE!!!!

I kept thinking how each of you would have enjoyed: Celia, Sahalie, Spar and Jasmine for sure!! The rest of you -- I'm still learning how 'arty-craftie' you are. This was just awesome.

    welllllllllllllllllllllllll hugs to all.

Sahalie, I'll find the watercolorist website and share at some point. I think you'd have just "loved" her......... what a personable person. So inspirational.

After my battery charges a bit in the camera I'm gonna take her a copy of my book, as a thank you. I'd be wild to take a class from her -- maybe next summer..... she's just finished her teaching classes for the summer. (There's a MASSIVE arts program of classes here -- HUGE arts organization..... nationally recognized teachers from all over. Plus lots of classes for children.)

Have I mentioned this is a great escape?

    hugs to each and every

footie: gonna go have some lemon-green-tea and will say a prayer for you as I pour.

Saint: I found out that the artist are just today, so don't drive up thinking you can see them tomorrow. Tomorrow is the festival of the historic buildings..... at least that's what I understood.

Yes. Shrink. Please write down your grand's cutie thoughts. I can't wait till mine (grands) are capable of such wit and insight. We've got a ways to go before that phase.

    love love

Sahalie: My two remaining 'commissioned' songs for the pre-school set are to be:

    1. Friends and Family

    2. Respect (each other/classroom/our planet)

If anyone wants to throw down a couple of phrases or two, or more -- I'm opening the floodgates for help and ideas.

So think like 4 and 5 year olds -- that's the intended audience.

    Thanks ahead of time.

Faith, no sleeping in.  DH went to work so I feel guilty if I go back to bed while he's toiling away at work.  My DH loves his Sky Caddy too - he got one for Christmas.  The swimsuit link works....good job.

Shrink, your GD sounds precious - that's such a great age.  Mine are 8 and 11 and I figure by the time they are ready to really get involved in their own lives (teens), then daughter #2 will be having babies.

Hi Janny, haven't seen you in awhile.  Hope you are doing well.

Sahalie, did you get hit with the flu?  I saw both of those movies.  Those are the kind I like too, not the chop em up kind.  I'm on countdown time for Maui - in a few weeks-----vacation overdue.

Hello everyone, Have had a very busy day shopping and eating at red lobster.  Am tired but a good happy tired, the grandkids have all they need now for school.  Emily already has her first day outfit picked out down to the earrings.  She is missing 4 teeth in the front and noticed today 1 is coming is side ways.  What to do about that.  I hate when things aren't just right with the grand kids.

Celia, did you get your ice cream, I'm actually gonna try Brauhms no sugar ice cream sweetened with splenda tomorrow. ( I hate being a diabetic)

Biker, Do you and hubby go to Sturgis every year?  Do you camp at Buffalo Chip Campgrounds every year.  Do they have food booths or music or just visiting with friends?  Is there a place to swim?  You look so comfortable on that bike

Jaz, have missed you, you have so much going on but still making time for your beach friends. I love ya.

Sahalie, I had a ball at the slumber party and the fire and telling the scary stories.  I always loved bedtime growing up as a kid because my dad would always tell us a story, he didn't read us books he made up his own stories and I wish with all my heart I could remember them,  They were always so interesting.

I don't remember seeing Panic Room or Pacific Heights but you can rent them I am going to watch them.  So glad you are feeling better.

Faith, when you get extra time (LOL) I am ready for that recipe.  I don't know how you keep up with yourself.

Saint, I really want to hear all about your adventures.  I have had a few and some nearly cost me my life.  Me and DH went to Colorado white water rafting.  Soon as we hit the class IV rapids we hit a rock and I was thrown from the boat and really think if I hadn't had a helmet on would have been hurt really bad because I just kept rolling on the rocks on the bottom.  When I finally remembered to totally relax my body (which is hard to do when you think you are dying)  I came to the surface and held on until they could get to me.  Everytime I talked water would squirt out of my mouth. I breathed more water that air for a bit.  I refused to get back in the boat and the guide said it is the boat or climb straight up the rock cliffs.  I climbed the cliffs and now will only do class I and II.  We also went to the top of Pikes Peak, it was hot when we started and snowing at the top and I could not get a breath and DH got altitude sickness and started throwing up so we did not stay long.  That Colorado was the worst vacation we ever had.  DH said he just knew he was going home a widow.

Foot, how are you doing? Hope all is getting better for you.

Sige, Hi how are ya doing.  Hope to get to know you better.

Well, I didn't mean to write a whole book so I'll get off and let someone else talk

Am I the only one who love the song new soul, i still can't get it out of my head.  First heard it on a mac computer commercial.

Everyone, have a wonderful evening.  Love you guys
