Haven't posted in quite a while.  I am now 3 months PFC and have full coverage although very, very short.  I have pretty much not worn much of anything at home for the past few weeks, but always a scarf or wig when in public.  But.... today, I went bald at my tennis league for the first time.  Just got too hot (indoor courts) to have anything on my head so just flipped off my head cover and went BALD.  Whew!  Felt so much better and I got lots of compliments from my league players about how good I looked.  Everyone commented on how I have the perfect face for the new "do".  Maybe they were just being nice, but it did give me confidence to try it more.

I have been using the BOOST hair products and just got the biotin serum which I have been rubbing on my head twice a day.  My husband told me yesterday that he is surprised how fast my hair seems to be growing right now so maybe it is helping.  Then again, maybe it is just time that it would start growing faster anyway.

Our son's wedding is Dec 11th and I do plan to wear my wig for that!

Marion I can't wait til my hair is as long as yours.

I still wear my wigs ALL the time, here is a recent pic of my growth, about 4 1/2 months post chemo (sorry the pic is so big)

My husband was out of town when I had my head buzzed.   I had my wig on when he got home, he came up to me and took my wig off, looked at me and then kissed the top of my head.  I busted out crying, it was one of the sweetest things he has ever done.  Now, I actually am bald a lot of the time, I quit wearing my wig over a month ago, and wear hats if I am going out.  My husband loves rubbing my fuzzy head and I love it, it is very soothing to me.

Diane1960:  You were asking about hair loss for your Mom.  I had Cytoxan and Taxotere (4 chemo treatments 21 days apart) and my hair starting thinning on day 14 after the initial treatment -- shedding like dog loses hair.  I pulled at it and it came out in thinning strands.  Some of it held on -- for a week or two later -- much like the "Land of the Living Dead" -- it was then, that my husband I decided to shave it because that look was depressing to me.  Your mom's doctor can give her more specifics for her situation.  I finished my last chemo July 29th and ended rads the first week in August.  Since my hair started coming in weird a little over here and there, I shaved it the first of September to make it all come in at the same time.  It is now 2 months out and I have a little more than 1/2 inch growth back.  Hugs to you and your mom on this journey.  The losing of the hair is an emotional roller coaster.  I have wigs for work but hats tended to be my best friend.  Burlington Coat Factory carries different casual hats as well as sometimes you can find neat ones at Target, Wal-mart and Dollar General stores.  There are specific sites that will carry such items for breast cancer people but they tend to be pricey.  Much love!

I am a little over two months PFC and have very short hair growing in slowly but surely.  I never showed anyone my bald head except once - showed my sister. She was good about it, didn't freak out.  I feel so much better now that hair and brows are back - it makes a huge difference in my emotional state.  Losing the hair is horrible.

P.S.  One positive thing about being bald -- you can dance nekkid in the rain and not worry a thing about your hair!  (Not that I ever knew someone who did that!)  Just saying you get to a point where you have to embrace it and not let the fear of that "unknown" face sharing at you with the scary "NO HAIR" steal your joy.  People out and about are so WONDERFULLY compassionate about it --  Susan B. Komen Foundation has really made a positive step for all of us walking this walk -- to not be so alone!  Men tend to be skittish -- wigs / scarfs / hats -- they don't know how to react.  I walked down the hall initially holding my wig in one hand combing it / hat on head  -- going to bathroom to put wig on.  They would look at me -- I would say -- I bet you can't do this!  :)  You have to find your footing because the walk is several months of walk!  HUGS!

    kittcat,

I am using La Gem Turquoise Conditioning Mist before I blow dry my wig. I bought it at wig place.

    ladym13,

You look beautifull, Your hair-do is to be jelaous of. I hope I would have same amount of hair at that time. I am almost 9 weeks out and have fuzzy hair.

    InTwoPlaces,

my husband saw me twice without wig, both times in last 10 days. I have some fuzzy coverage and I needed him to tell me honestly about my hair growth. I have son who is 6 and he never saw me without wig and I always have wig on when he is around. At night I use night hat, but at the very beginning I was sleeping with wig, too.

As I've posted previously,I went commando for a number of reasons. The first is, it was a long hot summer, and I was flashing my buns off ;)  The second was, I got incredible support to do so. My husband, and even my mother and father commented that I have strong features and looked really striking bald. I even got some cat calls on the street, and one time was stopped by some young women doing a fashion shoot.

My point is, it can also be a time of self-discovery. I totally understand how painful and weird it can be, it is definitely a mark of illness.  But,I was encouraged to wear it well, and I must say, the world followed my lead.  I learned a lot during the whole experience, and I can't say it was all bad.  I really played up the whole thing with copper sunglasses, and kicker boots.

    My hair is currently spotty,btw.

Nikola: You can't upload your photos directly to this site. You will need to upload the photo(s) first to an image hosting site -- try Flickr or Photobucket, some people mention using Facebook too. Then you'll need to link to that by hitting the insert image icon, then pasting the URL in there.

Nikola: nice hair growth. I would definitely go wigless around the house at this stage. I know you have your six-year old to consider but I think if you explained it to him, it would be a lot easier on you.

Believe it or not, Nikola, you are ahead of me!  I think that's pretty darn good coverage for 9 weeks.

Keep it going!  Did I mention my body hair is ahead of the head hair, now that is unfair!

Kittycat:  I know that they sell a product at my wig place that you use to "finish" the hair but i am not sure if anything less then a trim will help get rid of the bushiness.  I love that you slept in your wigs!  I wore a little knit hat and my DH thought it looked cute but I hated it.

my DH shaved my head himself and I just hated the way I looked.  I felt ugly the entire time while going through chemo.  Still not happy with my hair but I guess it beats not having any, just wish it would grow faster.

LadyM:  You look great with short hair.  It looks like a hairstyle, not chemo hair.

Hey pinkwarriors! Today I am 5 months PFC! YAY!  I haven't worn a wig since Oct. 6th. My son (age 17) told me to "ditch the wig" I looked "much better without it". I thought my hair was coming in straight at first but as it grows it has tons of waves which make it "wing out" over my ears and everywhere else. Don't get me wrong, I am not complaining. I am SO happy to have hair, losing it was the worst part for me!  My husband shaved my head and saw me every night before bed without hair (I wore a nightcap for warmth most nights) but he really grew to love my lack of hair. He said and still says that it was easier to cuddle me in bed without taking a big whiff of hair up his nose or mouth!  Now he says it's getting too long... LOL  (it is about 3/4" all over and thick). I told him "TOO Bad" he will have to deal with it!  :)

    ((Hugs))

Thank you so much ladies....I feel happy that my hair is coming back the same as it was before...but MAN does it ever take a long time eh? I'm hoping by this time NEXT year I'll have some length.

I swear by Nioxin...I've used it for years and continued to use it even on my bald head...

I am going back to work January 3rd and VERY nervous about going wigless as my hair was VERY long when I left...big change.

I'm so glad you posted!  It took me a while to get your "just out of chemo" head, so I figure I'm just somewhat behind.  I did find that my hair fell out again after my last treatment.  It all goes back to where you were in the hair cycle at the time of treatment.

Nikola:  I think your hair at nine weeks looked beautiful... not kidding at all here.  It looks like it's coming in evenly too.  I haven't lost mine yet, just 2 days out of first treatment.  I'm very afraid of when it starts falling out.  Funny thing, prior to dx, I had a dream that my hair was falling out in clumps.  My hair was down past my butt, and I cut 18" off prior to surgery and it's still at my shoulder blades.  So yeah, it's scary for me.  But you're doing really well.  Thanks for being so brave to post your picture right after out of chemo... believe it or not, this helps me realize how I may look and prepares me for it.  I plan on doing the same thing when I go through it.  I already am in process of posting pictures after surgery on the picture forum.  All the pics help.

cc4npg:  Good luck with your chemo.  I had cut my hair to shoulder length a few years ago so I went to 2" when it started to come out and then out of frustration at all of the hair mess, finally shaved it.

So since I can't figure out how to post pictures, I updated my avatar to reflect 9 months today post chemo hair.  I went back to completely using what I used to use and for the first time since chemo was complete.   I could style my hair the way I wore it prior to chemo!!!  I used the Nioxin Thickening gel combined with the Pantene Volume gel, blow dried it and flat ironed it then I pieced it out with Loreal moulding mud then finished with Nioxin Hair spray and Sally's ionic shine booster.  This is almost looking like my old style, too, except I do need a haircut!  Yes, I have always used this many products to give my weak hair some texture (although I have lots of that from chemo still) and to control the frizzies.  My hair used to be fine but wavy now it's coarse and kinky and very cowlicky (is that a word??? LOL!).

MBJ:  Thanks for the well wishes!  2 days post first chemo, not too terrible so far.  Yes, cowlicky is a word.  Your hair looks really good!!  Even if it is cowlicky!  Hopefully it will settle down as it continues to get longer.  It's good to see pictures of those who are past this nasty time, and helps us know we'll get there where you are now.  Really helps me personally to get through what lies ahead, knowing that with time, it will grow back.  The small percentage who don't get it back isn't what I'm going to concentrate on... 95% or more do.  Looking good!!

cc4npg, thank You. I am happy it looks like coverage all over. It is still very fine and fuzzy especially at the ends.

MHP70, is your hair looking like this? It is still fine and fuzzy.

MBJ, You have lots of hair. Look nice.

    cc4npg,

I've been where you are just six months ago. The 1st one is behind you now and its true that the time will go by very quickly. I couldn't wait to flip the months on the calendar b/c I knew I was that much closer to being done. Now I'm 8 weeks PFC and just had my exchange surgery today. You are in the right place. These ladies are amazing.

My hair is growing in very dark & thick. Same as before chemo. I have full coverage just 8 weeks out. I still wear the wig, but I'm not sure how much longer I will be wearing it. Still a little too short for me, but hey it's hair ;)
