I started to lose mine @ 15 days after my 1st tx...shaved it right then and there, wasn't dealing with watching clumps fall out.  I hear that is more emotional than just shaving it.

Mine started falling out at about 15 days after first treatment with AC. It is so much better to get it buzzed when it starts falling out. I couldn't stand my hair coming out all over the place.

nora:  Henna is wonderful!  I dyed mine at 9 weeks and was really concerned about it being orange, but it turned out wonderful.  It's almost been 3 weeks since I used the Henna and it looks pretty much just the same as it did after I dyed it.  It has grown another 1/2" almost so I can see the white peaking out again, but Henna (or Henna/Indigo, or Henna mixed with other things) is a wonderful way to dye without chemicals!!  I will never go back to chemical dye.

Nora "baby orangutan" too funny. You must look so cute! This is the reason why I went to my professional. Even with one fix I'm still too red. He would have fixed it again but I didn't want to stick around for 1 more try. I think the issue with chemo hair is it's more porous. typically red doesn't stick to gray.

I know my hair, especially on top is not as shiny as it used to be. I think it takes time for your real hair to grow back.

FYI just bought 3 month supply of walgreens minoxidril for women at $5 off plus mail in $10 at the store (don't think the $10 rebate offered online).

I am in the process of losing mine, it started on Day 15 (I'm on Cytoxan/Abraxane.  Now it's day 17, and coming out pretty good.  I may not get it buzzed off, what if it doesn't all go away?

OOps, forgot to ask.  I have been taking Biotin in a large dose for a couple of years.  Do you think it will help the hair now and later?

    Thanks, Jane

well yesterday was so cold and gloomy (rain and snow!) that i decided to get out the henna.  bought it online from puritan pride for 5$  color was med brown.  I mixed it with warm coffee and apllied followed by saran wrap and a towel and left in for 2hrs.  Was very pleased  YEAH was so nervous I was gonna get an orange or red, but it came out a beautiful warm brown.  Wish I could post pics but I am just not that comp savvy.  It could still stand to fill in alot before I go wigless but al least all that annoying gray is gone.

sweetcorn I've been taking 5mg of Biotin for 6 years not including what's in my multivitamin. It is supposed to help with hair and nails. I took it all through chemo too…

But be careful what you wish for. Fast hair growth means legs etc too Tongue out

I lost my hair on day 18 of TC x 4. It all kind of came out at once in the shower. Actually no tall of it i had these long strands that never fell out all along my hairline. I never shaved them because it gave the illusion of hair under a hat. But when my hair started to grow back 4 weeks PFC those long hairs started to break off and i had this layer of hair that was an inch longer than the rest. I went to the hair salon at 15 weeks and had it all evened out. I am at almost 20 weeks now. I have full coverage but there is one spot at the top of the back of my head that seems a little bit thinner than the rest, not bad though. I could go without a hat now i think but i am so used to the hat now i feel naked and cold without it. My inlaws are coming for a visit in 2 weeks and I wanted to get my hair colored but having trouble getting an appointment. I have never colored my hair before so I am afraid to try it myself.

I haven't done a very good job of taking photos to chronicle my hair growth.  So I thought I'd go back to some photos from the last few months to show you all how it has gone.  So my last chemo was August 23.  The first one is from behind, b/c it's the only photo I could find from early on... I started out with an organic-ish hair color which resulted in a reddish color and then really wanted something darker and used regular salon color in desperation.  The photos are at 4 months, 5 months, 6 months, 7 months and 8 months PFC.  Hope this works...

Nora - your baby orangutan story made me giggle.  Who else to better relate than all of us bald chemo girls!  I want to colour my hair but now I am a little hesitant - perhaps just a rinse would be better?  I think I might call my hair dresser.  Happy Easter everyone!

carberry:  Glad you liked how your Henna turned out!  Would love to see pics.

I used Biotin all through chemo too.  No one told me I couldn't, and yes, I think it definitely helped. My nails didn't lift, but there is a definite line between the healthy nail and the taxotere nail now. I didn't have ridges either.  And hair is growing very nicely.

I will try the henna....I am also going to have my son's barber buzz my "orangutan" hair tomorrow when we go to his house. He's like family and now is doing hair cuts in his home so it will be private too. All I need is a buzz anyway

I had DD AC every other week for 4 treatments.  Like many of you, it started coming out at maybe day 12, and I shaved it off.  I felt I had control of losing my hair by doing that, plus less mess.

Then I had DD Taxol every other week for 4 treatments.  I started getting peach fuzz probably by week 3, and that longer clear fuzz as time went on.

I started taking Biotin 3 weeks after my last chemo, and I swear it accelerates growth, but I am not sure it is working on my head.  I had lost every lash and every brow hair.  The lashes started coming in first, and suddenly I have a LOT of clear brow hair.  It is gradually getting darker.  I also had a lot of sudden clear upper lip hair, and my leg and pubic hair seemed to have grown overnight. The facial hair is a little disturbing, so I'm cutting back on the biotin.  It's not like I should shave or anything, but still!  Maybe I just got used to being hairless.

Sunflower, I have to say I was in hysterics reading about your pirate look!!  Sorry about the ingrown lash, that must have hurt.  On Taxol I would get tiny styes and my eyes were very watery. I probably rubbed all my lashes out.

For those of you considering henna, if you ever want to use chemical dyes again, I believe you have to let the henna treated hair grow out and get it cut off.   Right now I am hoping for any bit of length at all, and don't want to lose any of it!!  I got Natural Instincts semi permanent color to try this weekend.  I don't have enough hair to justify a trip to the salon, and this stuff evidently washes out after 28 shampoos.  Hopefully I won't look like Ronald McDonald.

Here's another question: my hair started to fall out about 3 weeks after my first chemotherapy treatment (2/16/11) and I shaved it to hurry up the messy and disconcerting process. But my hair keeps growing. I have this thin gray peach fuzz that looks terrible and feels uncomfortable under the wig or hat. I keep shaving it, but I'm wonder if I should let it grow out. Is this my new hair already? I'm only on treatment 3 out of 4. Did this happen to anyone else?

Natural Instincts update:  I tried to get the same color as my own hair, and overall it looks good, but I had 2 patches of grey it didn't cover well.  One is a quarter sized patch to the right of the top of my head.  I guess it is a little darker, but you can still see it.  I was hoping to have 'virgin' hair for a while and that's why I chose the semi-permanent.  If you have some greys here and there, it covers/blends fine, but the patches not so much.  Should have followed my first instinct and gotten the permanent root touch up stuff.  I used maybe 1/4 of the full sized semi-permanent stuff and put it on pretty thick.

Lavogt - most of my hair fell out after I shaved it.  When the peach fuzz started coming in I left it alone.   I had my chemo over the winter and wore knit caps around the house.  The peach fuzz was my hair coming back in.

Went topless out in public for the first time today.  Lots of looks, lol, not quite enough hair to look like I actually STYLED it this way!  I don't care anymore - it was nice not to have something on my head.

Lago, thanks for the tip about the sale and rebate on monoxidil!  I just got mine, looks like the sale ends tomorrow (rebate too I think).  Do you use that and the nioxin together?  I couldn't recall if you used both, I think Carrol2 does?  Anyhow getting tired of having no hair and yours looks so good I am hopeful this will give it a kick start :)

Regarding Henna and the use of chemical dye again...

Here's what I know.  When I wanted to use Henna, I was told to wait at least 6 weeks after my last chemical dye before using it.  I had no problems.  Using it too soon after a chemical treatment (dye, perm) can leave green hair.  The same applies when switching from Henna to chemical dye.  I was told if I ever want to go back to chemical dye (not that I would), I would need to wait about 6 weeks after using Henna in order to use chemical dye.  You can also use Crystal Light Lemonaide in an attempt to get Henna off your hair (I don't know how well that works).  But you shouldn't have to cut your hair in order to use chemical after Henna.

I went to get a cut and highlight yesterday and can hardly believe how much better it made me feel.  In 6 mos the back of my hair measured 3 inches and the top 2 1/8.  I was shaped and texturized and my color was made deeper and more intense (brownish red) with blondish highlights.  Many have commented on how much better it looks.  I colored my own 2 or 3 times and it took okay, but I am not a monochromatic hair color girl.  Woohoo!  It was nice seeing a glimpse of my old self - yes, a mere glimpse.

christine nioxin is a 3 step scalp treatment for thinning hair. It's a shampoo, conditioner and like a leave in moose.

bdavis I have been taking biotin i don't notice any excessive facial hair. On chemo even the little blonde hairs on my face were gone and i ahd not noticed until it came back. I have been tking biotin for 5 months not moustache or anything like that.
