carrol~I think your hair looks great!  I totally understand what you are saying about highlites...I need to do some kind of color to mine...just waiting for it to get a little longer.  Happy early anniversary and after all you have been thru...$400 spent on you isn't a bad thing at all!

14 weeks PFC at French Quarter Fest

Hi Ladies, I am Amy from the New Orleans area. I have been reading your post for months now and have been very encouraged by your progress.  You all have definitely helped me to get through the first three months of this year waiting for my hair to grow back. I am now 17 weeks PFC, last chemo was Dec 29.  The picture is 14 weeks PFC.....2 days after I went "topless" at the French Quarter Festival. I have been "topless" ever since. I just could not bear to put the wig back on.  It was the most incredible feeling.  Thanks to all of you showing your pictures...it reminds all of us that we are not alone.

Yes, I agree about the BLING....I was never a big jewelry wearer but now I can't stay away from the jewelry counters at Dillards and Macy's....it has been fun buying those big earrings.

Thanks again for all your support. Amy

thegood5....I know exactly how you feel. I was really nervous the first few times I went out.  My goal all along was to go to this outdoor festival April 8th without the wig...it was just going to be too hot ...85 degrees in New Orleans. My first outing actually was to my sister's house with a few friends the week before.  They all were so supportive and said "go for it." So I went one more week with the wig and then I was done. Actually, 3 strangers approached me at the festival and told me they liked my "haircut."  I have gotten more positive attention from people than I ever have. It has been amazing. I am sure you will be ready real soon. It's gets easier each time you walk out the door. Hang in there!

Carrol2....yes, my head would get really cold during the winter down here and you do get used to going out with your head covered...a feeling of security. I want to thank you for posting all your hair growth progression pictures. It was awesome to see the growth.  Have you gone topless yet?

Carrol - I think your color looks great.  I took mine darker because I think really short styles seem to look better in a striking tone - either really dark or really blond.  I looked at lots of hollywood gals with pixies and they are either dark or blond.

thegood5 - the photo of you with your daughter is adorable.

lago and teklya - thanks for the compliments on the short do.  I don't know, there is just something about it that makes me feel older.  Or like I look like my mom (who is 70!).

And for all of you who feel like you have fuzz or that it's growing slowly, please trust me when I tell you that once it starts coming in it comes pretty fast.  I feel like it was literally just yesterday that I felt like uncle fester too.

Amy I am glad my pics helped. I know I saw pics like this when my hair fell out and it gave me hope. I have not gone topless yet but as soon as it gets warm i will. I bought some scarves to ties around my head that i will wear to spruce it up

Carrol2... I think your hair looks great. It is so nice and full. Whenever you are ready, you should go for it, that is as soon as it gets warm. We are already hitting 90 on some days. So it was time for me. We all have to do it in our own time....yours is coming soon I am sure.

Carrol I have links to most of the jewelry designers that make my stuff. Even my expensive stuff is not $400! I don't think I own anything that is much more than $100. Stuff I personally purchase is under $100 usually $20-$50 range.

Lago I know it is a little privately owned store those places all have inflated prices. They are really big full hoops with 3 colors of hammered gold. But they are hollow so not that much gold. I used to be in the jewelry biz so I know the mark ups most times are huge. I know what this stuff really cost to make because i used to buy my stuff at trade shows all the time at cost. But i mostly got necklaces and rings not that many earrings and a lot of my earrings i lost. Lat thing I got was at this big art fair here last summer. I got these really cool earring that look like they have glass globes but are actually some kind of resin and they were $80. I like the unique stuff. I looked in kohls and walmart but that stuff just looks like junk to me. I do have a few cute samples from chicos a friend gave me. We have an art crawl the beginning of every month in the warmer months I will be on a mission for earrings and art of course. I always support creative people, i don't have much money but that is a priority to me.

Ladies, I just want to thank you for the photos and the promise that someday the hair will be back. I am 7 weeks PFC and have almost nothing grown back. Peach fuzz that looks clear (probably gray) at the sides, maybe 1/16", and mostly a bare scalp with a few hairs sticking out, but much more scalp than hair. As many of us have said, losing the hair has been one of the hardest parts of all of this, and that is definitely true for me. Thanks for giving me hope!

I was just looking at some of the photos hoping to get encouragement.  I never expected it to take this long for the hair to grow back.  I also realized, I haven't taken any pictures, which I will do now, I'm 14 weeks PFC and although my scalp is fully covered, there is nothing growing up or down.  And I know the Herceptin is slowing it down.

My sister is getting in July and I'm worried I will not be ready to go topless by then.  Although it's in Florida, in July, so I'm sure it will be so hot.

I was never a hair person before and wore my hair very short, and it was naturally curly, so I have no idea how to use a curling iron or flat iron or any product...I will see what happens in the next month before I freak out...

readingmama I would get a nice lightweight fancy hat and velcro some hair to it if you're worried. It has to be cooler than wearing a wig.

Nancy, I think the best flatirons are Sedu, Amika and FHI.  They are all expensive and get very hot. Guess what the F in FHI stands for!  I had crazy curly hair before chemo, so far it is straight now, but only about an inch long.  The sleek hair products help with straightening, and be sure to condition and use some kind of barrier like BioSilk or CHI, or you will fry your hair.  I've been flatironing mine for eons, but will need to get a small one so I don't burn my scalp.  These irons get to like 400, but you can set them lower.

2nd Natural Instincts update - I've washed my hair 4x and most of it washed out.  You can see the greys again.  Not sure if it's the product or chemo hair.  Will try the permanent root touch up stuff this weekend as I still can't justify the salon.

I am not a costume jewelry fan, and will only wear "real," but Lia Sophia really does have some pretty stuff.  It is one of those home party things, and they have great deals for hostesses.  My daughter had a party before her prom, and I think it was something like buy one get 2 free, plus very good discounts based on sales.  I think all their stuff has a lifetime guarantee.  One of her friends is having a party this weekend.  They also have a catalog online.  Brighton also has really pretty things, I love their shoes and handbags.

LOL, also a Biotin update.  I was saying only I could see the facial hair.....wrong.  I went to dinner with my daughter and she said, "wow, does that biotin make the hair grow on your face too?"  Cut it close with scissors today!  :)   Just my experience, but be warned!  Don't worry though, nothing scissors can't fix.

I am considering going topless . . .  My avatar was taken at our local Relay for Life a couple of weeks ago -- I figured if anyone could deal with a bald woman, it would be folks at the Relay.  But that was the only time, really, I've been in public without a hat (and even that night I wore a hat most of the time I was there).  However, with summer setting in down here in SC and increasing hot flash symptoms, I'm thinking not having a head covering sounds really good.  Maybe I can take the plunge at the school I work at once the kids have finished for the year in about 4 1/2 weeks.

    JulieH,

As I said before on the Jan site, you look great without hair.  I am in NC and know what you are saying about the heat.  Today I had my last chemo, they had a royal party, and we all wore tiaras, what a hoot.  Also tea, scones, clotted cream, etc.   Almost made chemo fun.

Hi JulieH I am going to Relay tomorrow and I do have a little hair ...I figured I will go topless as well. If you can't do it there I don't know where you could. Did you have fun? This is my first one.

Very appropriate celebration, given tomorrow's festivities over in England.  Although I'm not sure even clotted cream can make chemo fun.  And congrats on finishing up!  It feels good, doesn't it?Smile  Now we start the hair watch!

Tracie:  Have fun at Relay -- it can be a really good time.  After my husband was diagnosed with lymphoma almost four years ago I got very involved with Relay and have chaired my school's team and served on the organizing committee for the whole event.  I was sorely disappointed when I realized I just wouldn't be able to maintain that level of involvement this year -- it was a treatment week for me and my SEs were such that I really only could stay a couple of hours (usually, I stay all night with my team).  I have always been very moved by the survivor's lap and watching my husband go around the track -- and this year it was doubly moving, walking with him.  I hope you have a good experience.  I'll bet Houston knows how to put on a big to-do!Smile

Does wearing a wig all the time slow the hair growth down?  I usually keep my wig off when I work at home and put it on later in the day to go to Rads (and I usually run errands after Rads).  when it was colder, it I didn't have a wig on, I had a cap on, but now that its warmer and I have some hair, I'll go topless around the house.

    If hat shopping while bald....

I wanted a few funky hats for spring/summer but everything was too big on my bald head - I would turn my head and it would turn without the hat LOL.  I managed to find a couple nice hats in higher end children's stores, saved some money too.  I got a straw relaxed-style cowboy hat and a canvas cap, both for about $20.  The same styles in adult sizes were $40 for the cowboy, and $20 for the cap.

Marjie, You are so funny.... I colored my hair yesterday , I used Lorel Light ash brown. I did not turn very red/orange at all... YEAH !!!! I feel a little better not being so gray I think the ash keeps the red from developing.

Ok, I finished my 6th TAC treatment yesterday. I still have eyebrows and lashes, think I get to keep them?  Still some hair down south too.  Anyone get to keep some brows and lashes?  Is tomorrow to early to check for hair on my head, ok, kidding on this question. But let me know if you all lost brows and lashes?
