Chris, - My hair seems "translucent " as well. "As you mentioned, "clear" is a good description. I thought this was only me! But I too only have very fine "fuzz" and had my last treatment November 10.

Did anybody else's hair start initially coming in colorless??

My hair was colorless for about 1/16 to 1/8" and then some started to darken. Before I colored it, it was all either white or dark brown/black. A very few hairs were my original auburn.

Chris and Springtime, my scalp hair was colorless at first, too.  It was like fishline (invisible), but very soft and fine.  Then suddenly (it seemed like overnight), my scalp had a 5-o'clock shadow.  I actually thought it was my skin that had become darker, but it was the base of the little hairs.  I think it was around 1/8 inch long, like Nancy said.  (Hers and mine followed similar patterns.)

My hair is now around 1-1/2 inches long.  That's an estimate, because the length varies in different places on my head, and it's really too curly to measure accurately.  The color is a blend of medium brown (my normal color), light brown/dark blonde, dark charcoal gray, and light gray, with just a touch of red highlights thrown in (which is also normal for my hair).  It is grayest at my temples, which was true pre-chemo.

I haven't messed with the color, because I'm kind of enjoying the newness of it.  Actually, I've never colored or bleached my hair, and I don't think I'll start now.

I need a pick me up in the hair dept. I'm about 15 weeks past my last chemo... I have hair but the top is still very thin. You can see scalp clearly. I keep hoping that it will thicken up at some point. One of the big things I wanted out of chemo (besides living) was to have a thick head of hair. I'm wondering if the tamoxifin and herceptin is making it hard to come back. *pout*

Sable, I'm 16 weeks post chemo. It has just started to fill in nicely, but I, too, thought it never would. I wouldn't have colored it if I could still see lots of scalp. That's really what I was waiting for. When it does start to fill in, it does so pretty quickly. It's partly the overall length of the hair, but also, the area between the primary growth starts to sprout new hairs.

I don't know that you'll get a thick head of hair, though, if you didn't have it before chemo. Hm-m, makes me wonder if bald men who go through chemo get renewed growth.

    Otter and NancyD,

Thanks for the info about colorless or "transluscent" hair... I wonder if mine will get any color when it hits the 1/8+ inch mark. I think I was all "white" prior and was coloring it. It also was not curly. I can't wait to see if it gets any color or curls. It is very fine/soft and "fuzzy" right now. the fuzz is getting fuzzier every day.

No eyelashes though, and sparse eyebrows. What a transformation. good to know we are not alone in this!

Please help with suggestions I am using Nixion to help the hair come back it is VERY VERY slowly and I showed my ong. today when I went in for Hercepten I get it every 3 weeks I am 15 weeks out of chemo and 4 weeks out of Rad and the hair is so slow not near ready to be out in public with it. His only suggestions were try Rogaine you put it on your head its actully for men and I dont think it would work in a chemo case do you? Does anyone have any suggestions trying not to be inpatient and I wont be if this is the norm for anyone else. Ladies let me know if anyone has little hair after this long without chemo he said it was slower than average and in 3 months I should be getting hair ... I dont want to use the Rogaine and grow a beard or chest hairs ha....

Maura PUPPY Has more hair than I do all over..

    hairless happy but worried .....

    Hey girls,

I've finished my last chemo (4 of TCH) almost two weeks ago and I still have eyebrows and eyelashes!  Woohoo!  Should I be excited and does this mean I won't lose them?  I still have even a little bit of hair on my head, even though my DH says I look like Fire Marshall Bill.  LOL

    Take care all!

Girls, I haven't posted on here for a while, but on the hair/s front: boy! what a difference a few weeks makes. Firstly, I didn't think chemo would ever end. Then suddenly, this Friday I am TEN WEEKS OUT!! One day I was looking like David Bowie c1985 and THEN last week I started PLUCKING MY EYEBROWS! This is significant because I had not plucked my eyebrows for 25 years. I kid you not. I grew twice as many. It is wonderful. No top lashes to speak of..some longish ones but they are so thin and whitish I don't bother. BUT the last two days I have worn mascara on the lower ones because THEY ARE BACK and more numerous than before. The point I am making is..just when it all seems insurmountable..everything starts to grow again. It happens in a flash. The hair on my head is about 2 cms long and that whitish baby fluff that was there for a while is now being outgrown by dark hair. All the bare patches have now grown over and it's starting to look a bit elfin rather than alien!! Don't give up..hang in there! This shite will be over before you know it. XXX

    Kerry - good description, "elfin".

Sunshine, that's kind of how my hair looks, especially since I have a widow's peak in the front and the growth of hair is following the line naturally. No real curl but I do have a few spots that don't want to go in the same direction as the rest of the hair - cowlicks. I took a look at the back of my head this morning and some of the areas look like they might be developing their old wave, but no tight curls.

NEWS FLASH: I went to work today without my wig. I was going to wait until after New Year's, but this morning, I just couldn't put it on. So I am here, wigless, getting some positive reactions, but also feeling a little exposed, KWIM?

Nancy......congrats on the wigless thing.......I went wigless for the first time at my party on Saturday night.....I had bilat mast yesterday and thought I would wait until after the surgery and christmas to do the big reveal.......but the thought of keeping my wig on all night at my party was too much.......added a few highlights to the now pink hair and voila.......everyone said they liked it......but what are they supposed to say!

Nancy, congrats on going natural and wigless! wooo!!

Tbird, my last chemo was Nov 10th, that was about 6 weeks ago. I still have very thin sparse eyebrows (and I have to use a pencil) but I noticed the other day my eyelashes are nearly all gone! I hope you miss this event and come away unscathed. It is just like one more *insult* !!!

Thanks, all, for reminding us that the hair will come back. I have such short, soft, "fuzz" on my head now - it is so fun to feel - much better than a bald head!!!

I just got off the phone with my very good friend -- my hair is "scheduled" to leave me this week -- I said I just hoped I could hold on to brows and lashes and she said she really thinks its all about ATTITUDE whether or not you keep them (not the hair mind you, but the lashes and brows) !!!!!  I am so furious -- I couldn't reply intelligently. So I says if I do lose them, it's my OWN fault because my ATTITUDE wasn't right?????  Aaaaagggggghhhhhhhhh!

Brenny  People do say some stupid things!!!

My chemo was TAC x 6....

I did loose my hair but kept my eyebrows and eyelashes until about

six week after I finished chemo.....I was mad when I lost them but

thankful I got to keep them during chemo....

    Maybe you will keep yours!

    (Hugs)

sunshine - I also had 6xTAC and had the exact same experience of losing my hair, but not losing my lashes/eyebrows till chemo was over.  I never quite lost them all, but my left eyebrow got down to 7, yes I counted them, 7 hairs before starting to grow back.

brenny - yes, people do say some stupid things.  It's incredible, isn't it?  My favorite was the person who, after I described my DIEP flap reconstruction, told me that it'd almost be worth getting cancer to get a free boob job and tummy tuck! As Ricky Ricardo would have said, "Ai-yi-yi-yi-yi!"

    Oh Benny!

Cut me a FREAKIN BREAK!!! I am 6 weeks post ending chemo (AC/T) and my eyebrows are very sparse and my lashes are all but gone! Similar to what Sunshine says above. This is a new development, I wondered because I kept them through chemo if it would not happen to me. I find it  very rude and upsetting!!! Even when you know it is very likely to happen!!!

I guess my attitude needs adjusting too! BOLOGNA!!!!  I am sure I would have been dumbfounded as well. What the heck do you say to THAT?

I suppose if we had better "attitudes" we might not have gotten BC in the first place??? This is most ridiculous... Gosh that makes me MAD!!!

    Hi All,

First Brenny I'm sooooo SORRY a FRIEND could ever say that especially if you are getting Poisons in your body but hey a Positive attitude might change the hair difference. Sorry I don't think so. That hurt me to the core. Sorry I'll get off my high horse!

Oh, by the way Brenny I'm Bald and Beautiful as of today!!!

Just know we are here for you ANYTIME!

I'm going to second Kerry's comments. One day you look in the mirror and -- poof!-- there's hair. I am currently 10 weeks post chemo.

My eyebrows thinned during the end of chemo. They started coming back like crazy about 8 weeks out. I only started to lose my eyelashes about 6 weeks out. Now, a few weeks later they are sparse, but I can see some growing in.

I started going without a wig yesterday. It was really, really hard to do. But, now I am feeling better about it.

I've got photos. It's coming in the same color it was: salt and pepper with white at the hairline.

    Here's 8 1/2 weeks post chemo:

    8 1/2 weeks

And - 10 weeks (note the cowlick action):

    10 weeks

     8 1/2 weeks:

    8 weeks

And 10 weeks (it's white along the hairline and at the temples, so kind of hard to see):

    10 weeks

    Joia,

What a beautiful woman you are. You can certainly pull off the short hair.

I would like to know what everyone does with that scraggly hair on the sides of neck in back? I call it my wearwolf hair. Mine sticks out, so I wear my wig. I am actually thinking of getting another one that is longer to cover it. My last chemo was Oct 17, my hair is about an 1" and I absolutely hate the color. At some point I will be coloring it and I have never colored my hair. I loved my strawberry, goldish blonde hair.

My eyebrows came in gray and thick. Eyelashes long and lush, but I had long lashes before bc. I also have a face full of fuzz!

    Joia, your hair looks FABULOUS!

So I may still lose my lashes and brows, even though I finished chemo on the 4th?  That really sucks.  And my hair might not be the same color?  That sucks too.  And FACIAL HAIR?  What's that all about?  Geez.

Thanks, all, for the compliments. I am going to work tomorrow without a wig. I've only been into my office twice since I lost my hair and both times I wore a wig and scarf -- people were asking me when I was going to lose my hair it was so convincing. I've been working remotely in another city and have barely heard a peep out of my colleagues.I am kind of looking forward  to showing up with my skimpy hair as a way of saying.,"see, I haven't been on vacation; I've been dealing with something really difficult."

Yeah, tbird, my eyelashes started falling out 6 weeks post chemo, and now, 10 weeks later I am still losing a few each day. But, now I see some coming in for the first time.

The beard and mustache are growing like weeds, though.
