AEM47 - yay for the haircut! I am really looking forward to my first one.

My hair is growing fast, but I'm still only 9 weeks PFC.  I'm growing faster on top than sides, which I guess is not the usual growth pattern.  I am continuing the Rogaine and light treatment, Nioxin shampoo/conditioner, massaging my head, and taking biotin.   I have no idea which is really working, but I'm not stopping any of it until i can go with no wig and not look like I was a cancer patient.

I found that my eyelashes were diminished for about 5 weeks, then completely gone except for a couple strays for 2 weeks, then came back very quickly.  They are all back, very thick, (but still a little shorter than normal as they finish growing in).  I did not use any products on them.  Eyebrows are all back too, very thick, and in fact stray ones are now being plucked again.

The dermatologist suggested 2.5 mg biotin for the nails (still have issues there), but I'm taking 5 mg because the NatureMade capsules are that size (and because I know its a safe dose).

Has anyone used rogaine for women? It said on the box chemo patients should not use it. Also for the brows it has been going on 6 months and I have a few scattered brows:(. Pls, pls, pls tell me what I can do to get some growth? Is there a product I can apply to them to thicken them up? I might have been a over plucker before and that doesn't help but I would do ANYTHING to get some eyebrows back?

whatashocker I used Minoxidil (generic Rogaine) before chemo so once chemo ended I started again. Not sure if it made a difference. I do hear latisse is good for eyebrows but $$ and you need a prescription form either your derm or PS.

Is there any way to make everyone's avatars open up BIG?

Joan BC.org actually shrinks the image. I know the one I uploaded was bigger. When I right click and choose "view image" (on a PC) the image is still small.

So that would be a no Tongue out

Thanks MizMarie The old one was me after my 4th chemo in my wig (Dec. 2010). I think it's time to change it up.

AEM:  I had to laught at your Chia hair.  I sent a pic to my brother; he said exactly the same thing about my hair!  It's standing pretty tall on top with my 5 weeks PFC growth.

Hi Everyone – This site is terrific! Thanks to everyone. I have been reviewing this site to learn more about what to except with my hair regrowth and I finally have a couple of items that I can add to help everyone.

    1) I have used Latisse since it was introduced and I have always loved the product. Through a local spa, I joined the “Brilliant Distinction” program and received points on my Latisse purchases. I have been able to purchase it at two local spas in my city (no visit to a doc was necessary). Prices ranged from $90 to $120. Sometimes I was able to buy one get one free depending on the promo. Upon being diagnosed with BC I did some research. Latisse, also known as “bimatoprost is made by Allergen. Allergen also makes “Lumigan” which is also “bimatoprost”. Latisse and Lumigan are the same product (is this what some refer to as “generic” Latisse?). During one of my initial appointments with my oncologist I asked him whether Latisse and Lumigan were indeed the same product and could I just use Lumigan and save money? He went to his computer and did a few minutes of research and found they were indeed the same product. He gave me a prescription for Lumigan 3% which is covered under my prescription insurance so I am able to get a 3 month supply for about $10. At my 3 month PFC treatment appt with him, I had him renew the Lumigan prescription through 2013. I am fine with skipping my “Brilliant Distinction” points to save mega $$$.

    2) Since I had already purchased Latisse and had 2 bottles on hand, I continued to use it during my chemo treatment. I had normal lashes all during my chemo and my brows thinned but looked normal. I don’t know if Lastisse/Lumigan made my lash regrowth faster but here’s my timeframe:
May 1st – final chemo treatment – lashes seemed to thin out.
May 8th – my lashes lost their color.
May 10th – I did some research and found a wonderful person and she did lash extensions for me so I could look normal since my lashes had faded out
May 18th all except 6 lashes have fallen out. Wore sunglasses outside and wore false eyelashes when necessary.
June 21st – After constant looking at my lashes in my 10x mirror, I thought I had enough length on my top ashes to have new eyelash extensions done. But upon my visit to my eyelash professional, I sadly learned NOPE :( not enough length and I needed to wait. I was crushed.
June 26 – Yay – I have enough length on my top lashes to have eyelash extensions done – SO BEAUTIFUL – I was happy to finally look “normal “( normal as long as I wore my wig). My brows were also back and I had enough length on my bottom lashes to use Clinique bottom lash mascara- it has a super tiny mascara brush and works great on the bottom lashes.
    3) I have about the same amount of hair as AEM as I am 2 weeks behind her final chemo treatment date. Unfortunately, the color of my hair resembles that of a calico cat. My natural color is a medium blonde. But my new hair growth is black, brown, red, white, gray and blonde. So in addition to having “man hair”, I have a disjointed hair color. Since I look HORRIBLE with short hair, I will need to continue to wear my wig for the foreseeable future. Ugh.

    My best to everyone!

Milo I was using Bimatoprost or  (this is what I have referred to as the generic form )about 2 yrs before diagnosis and continued through treatment .I buy it on line it cost me about $10 per bottle with $25 dollars shipping so I spend $45 for 2 bottles that I believe is about a 3 month supply each bottle if you use it once a day.i have been using more because I also started doing my brows.I never  lost all lashes or brow, but they did thin some.I order out of the country though, but I think maybe I read somewhere that you can now get in USA.I never looked because I am very happy with where I have been getting it from.

Hi everyone --- I love reading about how everyone's hair is growing back --- in individual ways!  I'm almost 14 weeks PFC (I am definitely changing what the "F" stands for from now on!) --

OK... so I have a ridgeback! Anyone else's hair conspiring to "make like a mohawk"?  My hair is naturally doing this and I kinda like it -- so not fighting it.

I've been taking biotin 5mg a day -- also eating a hard boiled egg for breakfast almost every day -- using Nioxin shampoo occasionally, massaging head, yoga, and spending tons of time outdoors.

I was bad today and got my hair colored.  I had read somewhere to wait a year but I just couldn't do it.  So 3 months after my last tx I got my hair colored.  It was coming in very gray!  I didn't feel good going topless, not because of how short it was but because of the color!  I felt great today.  My beautician even "styled" it a little for me and shaved all the ugly fuzz off the base of my neck.  Why is this hair stuff so important to us?  I can't stop obsessing about it!!!

    Shera:  Your hair looks adorable.

Tina:  Like camillegal, I plan on coloring mine as soon as it's long enough to go topless on a regular basis.  I did go topless to the gym twice this week.  I am getting bolder and bolder.  (5 weeks PFC)

shera, wow, so much hair!  Looks great!  My hair came in much the same as yours, and I recall other women having similar hair growth patterns as their hair came in after chemo......it is called a faux hawk.  The style looks so cute on you young gals but on me (I'm in my 50s) it looked ridiculous.  After it gets so long, tho, it starts looking more like typical hair growth.

Tina I had my hair colored 13 weeks PFC. My onc told me I could color it when ever I wanted. My hair dresser actually did it twice because it was too red the first time. I had no problems. Just and FYI it seemed the texture of my hair didn't get back to normal till after a year. It's still has more body/slight wave than before and very thick, granted it was always pretty thick. That might be because it's so short now.
