C-squared-I think it has been the Nioxin products that have really helped. When it first was coming in I was scared because it was so thin. It is still a weird texture and I have to use a ton of conditioner, oil, and other products. Looks like you have beautiful, soft curls.  I miss my little Lydia. It is so hard when you kids move away. You miss so much of the grandkids growing.

Wow--Dianarose:  I am really impressed! Your hair looks adorable!  I can't believe how quickly your hair has taken off.  I guess if I would stop getting it cut every 4 weeks, it might be down to my shoulders as it grows like a weed (thank God!).

I'm in Ontario and I was able to get Nioxin at Beauty Supply Shop.  While I had growth, it was slowed by having Herceptin until last February.  I must take a recent pic.  The pace has picked up mind you but still short with zero style.  I have had one trim in a year and due for another to tidy it up a bit.  Hoping for some speedier growth during the summer.

What a beautiful grandbaby!  You look pretty great yourself!

My wife will finish her 12th and final Taxol this week (prior to this she did 4 DD AC infusions).

Anyone know what we can expect from a 'hair re-growth timetable' ?

    Thanks. Bless you all.

Colt 45... So glad your wife is almost done! I had the same tx. 4dd AC and 12 weekly taxol. My hair actually started growing back around my 8th taxol. Now I am about 24 weeks or a little over 5 months pfc and I have about 2-3in of hair. Every one is different though. Does she have any regrowth yet?

    Colt,

I finished my 12 taxols on January 9. I did dose dense AC before that.

My hair is about an inch long. It looks pretty good because I had it professionally colored 2 weeks ago. It had come in all gray even though I had almost no gray before chemo. It came in very thin and sparse at first, but then thickened up considerably. It's still not my original texture, but is much better. I don't wear the wig anymore.

Quick, weird question: has anyone had their underarm hair to not grow back? I'm 7.5 months PFC and my hair, leg hair, and other areas are growing as normal. But, I literally have no underarm growth. Not complaining, but just find it odd. I didn't have radiation, only chemo. Anyone else experience this?

SLKsMom I'm 2 years and 4 months PFC. I think I grow about 5 hairs under each underarm Tongue Out I didn't have rads either. It's a gift of chemo-pause. I really do think it's from the lack of estrogen. I'm on Anastrozole as well.

Colt, I finished chemo mid-December (2011) and started going out without a hat around March. Some people wait much longer, but as soon as I had about a half inch of hair, lol, I called it a hair cut and went on my way.

Thank you, Momine, placid and Melissa for responding...

My wife has some grey coming in. I don't know if that stays or falls out, too. She has some darker stubble (odd because she is a strawberry blonde who often colors a lighter blonde) more to the back and sides----less on the top and front so far. I think she'll feel better when it starts coming in more evenly and steadily. She has a scant few lashes and very thin brows. She has her final Taxol tomorrow.

Colt45 my hair came in very black and grey. While I did have some grey I never had black hair. Dark brown but not even as dark as it looks in my avatar. The texture was different too. I didn't go poodle (curls) but it was just different. It takes at least 12-18 months for your normal hair to come back.

SLK'smom, like Iago, my underarm hair is barely there. Also my brows never really came back -- very thin and sparse now. The Anastasia brow powder works wonders; now I don't leave the house without it. I've been using Latisse for almost a year, so my eyelashes are in pretty good shape. And, as Iago said, it's taken a long time for my "normal" head hair to return. I'm  14 months PFC, and the poodle curls are just now starting to loosen, maybe with the added length.

( I had chemo, rads and am on Anastrozole.)

Just wanted to interject that grey curls are not a given. I was dreading the curls, but in vain, because I was lucky enough not to get any. When the hair first started growing, it did look grey, but I buzzed it off, to make it grow in the same length and once it did it was the same as before.

Would like to add as well that I never got the chemo curls.  I always had a wave to my hair, so much so that in the 80's when big hair was in, I was one of the few that never had a perm!  I'm 1 year PFC now and the wave is much the same as it was then, but no the tight curls at all.  All hair has come back, including underarm, nether regions and leg hair!  Was always a bit hairy to begin with so nothing changed on that front with the exception of my eyebrows are sparser than before.  I just use powder and they look fine.

I am 5 mos. PFC and I have to say that I have the dreaded chemo curl.  I always had wavy hair, but nothing this curly.  I'm not even sure what to do with it or how to make it look cute.  Any suggestions would be great!  Also my other hairs all returned back as before.  I've never really been particularly hairy so I can't really tell if it's less than before or just the same.

What Is the difference between biotin and ferritin? My doctor told me that my ferritin level is low and that if I take 5 mg of ferritin that it might help with the hair growth. Has anybody else been told this by the doctors?

Runnergirl - Biotin is a supplement that many of us take to help with hair growth.  Ferritin, on the other hand, is related to iron levels, and if yours is low, it indicates anemia.  Never heard of ferritin to help with hair growth.  Are you sure you heard your doctor correctly?

I think this is mostly a hair regrowth thread, but I'm at the beginning of this and could use some help.  I have long, straight, fine hair, and it has started coming out.  I'm on Day 15 after my first chemo.  Since it's shedding pretty good, is it too late to get the short haircut and put off shaving, or should I just shave?  Whatever I do, I'd like to do it tomorrow morning (Saturday) so that I have the weekend to deal with it.

I have a wig that I'll probably start wearing to work either way.

    Thanks!

Hi Tr4c3y; mine was long also and I originally thought I'd leave it alone for as long as I could.  I had it cut short for about a day and then got so frusterated with the constant cleanup and my scalp remained tender and sore.

I had it buzzed really short and while there were stubblies to deal with occassionally it was a lot less tender and it was easier to wear the wig, scarves and hats without worrying about shedding all day long.

    Take care-

@Nancy44, when you buzzed your hair did you still end up getting bald patches, or did the short hair hang in there?

Tr4c3y i never cut or shaved my hair. When I saw it start to come out I didnt wash it for a few days. Jsut hairsprayed it and I got away with that for a few days, but as soon as I washed it it all came out at once. I wouldn't spend a lot of money on a haircut at this point unless you have an occaision you want to spruce up for in the next day or so. About 98% of my hair was out by day 18. I would spend my energy more on some cute wigs, hats or scarves at this point. Try to have fun with it. If the shedding becomes troublesome you can shave it. Some women find they like to shave it because they feel it gives them control, I couldn't bring myself to do it. It's a personal decision you should think about what works for you.

I had long hair but I got it cut up to shoulder level right before my surgery to make it easier to care for with limited mobility.  I never shaved it for chemo and just let it gradually come out.  I think clean up was a bit easier as the hair was long enough to grab the loose stuff in the shower and off of my pillow (main places where it was shedding).  I also kept brushing it every day to get the loose stuff out.  I think I had lost about 60% after the first chemo and was probably up to 98% or so by the time I finished chemo.  I finally just pulled the remaining straggly stuff (most of which was in the back down by my neck) once I realized my hair was growing back just to make it more even.

It's still super short and growing slowly.  It's very soft and fine and so far, just as straight as ever.  My last chemo was in November and I'm still probably around a half an inch.  I'm still on Herceptin so I'm hoping it speeds up once I'm done with that.  I'm not taking anything extra to promote growth though.

Tracy I had my hair cut short the day it started to come out but never buzzed. I didn't even cut it as short as I wear it now. I do recommend at least cut it short. It's such a mess even short. I was vacuuming my pillow and bathroom every day. You can see in the 2nd picture from the right the short cut I got: link

Ironically now I have the sides  and back buzzed.

Tr4c3y, once I buzzed it there was mostly bald patches, just some stubborn stubblies that hung on here and there.  I didn't have the nerve to "shave" it with a razor.

when I had mine buzzed, the little stubs of hair felt like needles sticking in my head when I layed on my pillow, so I gave in and had it shaved.. that was nearly 3 months back and now I can feel it growing back - you can't see it but I can feel it..

TR4c3Y..I cut mine in stages first a short do, then had my daughter buzz my hair whn I couldnt stand it falling out all over....we made a night of it and took pictures to send to my son.. it was my choice to buzz it, everyone is different. My theory was to make everything a fun or humorous experience. I actual kept "shaving my little stubble's during chemo so my wig was more comfortable. Good luck

I had shoulder length hair before TX. I had it buzzed after the 2nd TCH.  I  was getting the Friar Tuck look and my scalp hurt.  It felt alot better after the buzz and my wig fit better as well. I'm finding that since Herceptin finished in February, that the rate of growth is picking up. It almost looks like an intentional short haircut.  Can wait for shoulder length hair again though, I've never suited short hair ever.

Me too IamNancy, I couldn't sleep without a cap of some kind, I felt velcroed to my pillow!

I don't think my hair has grown at all this past month, darn Herceptin!  It's poodle fur anyway, so I guess it doesn't matter.  All in perspective.
