vl22, I colored mine about 8 months after chemo ended. My hair was brown with a few white strands before chemo, but it came dark steel gray and white. No brown at all! It made me look older so it had to go. I tried dying it myself, but there was so much gray, it didn't take. My stylist uses Kuene dye which has no ammonia and my hair looks healthier after she does it. My hair kind of has split ends so I just use a hair cream to disguise it. Personally, it's still better than being gray.

AgathaNYC, I use Nioxin system 6 and the 2%minoxidil. I started around Thxgiving bit I haven't seen a difference yet. Maybe it's too early? Considering that it's the Arimidex making it fall out, I'm not sure anything can help TOPPIX hair fibers and great at disguising the bald spots.

It sounds dumb, but there have been many times that I've ended up in tears after trying to style it. My hair used to be so thick and pretty but now it's a hot mess. I would think that after being kitchen for almost 3 years, I would have figured out how to style it. I'm almost ready to get a wig.

VL22- I colored my hair as soon as I could. My re growth wasn't even an inch long when I did it. My hair came back grey and prior, I had always dyed it blond so I wanted the blond back. My colorist first time used a gentle non peroxide darker color than what I used to get and it took and was fine. The next time we used a lighter color. I'm ready to get it colored again I'm going to go even lighter. The color has not effected or damaged the hair and I haven't noticed my new hair being any more fragile than my old hair. It's growing in and very thick so no harm done from the color. Do what's going to make you feel good!

    catlady44 ...

I am so very sorry. The Moderators wrote and caught that I forgot the word NOT. I apologize for any misunderstanding.

    Vicky

Corrected: It is fully understandable and NOT dumb to cry about your hair.

I think what happens (at least to me) is I want MY HAIR back. I don't care if this color and style fits me better. I want MY HAIR.

This is eight weeks out from last chemo. I finally feel like I can lose the scarves. My hair was very long and curly prior to treatment. Now it's growing in straight and salt/pepper. Eyebrows and lashes came out 3 weeks after Abraxane, then grew back thick and healthy quickly. I would love to color it, but oncologist said wait.

I only used coconut oil after showering.

You look beautiful!!! You have the perfect features for short hair, the color looks great, and your eyebrows are perfect. You can definitely lose the scarves.

Mama1416. I agree about the brows! They are fantastic!

I was the opposite... Had long straight dark hair prior to chemo. Now 7 months post chemo, I have (short, of course), very curly hair! I dyed it blonde since I had so much grey coming in....

(Sorry about the HUGE photos... not sure how to make them smaller! )

Jenniferx yes, gorgeous! Due to awful side effects I had to stop chemo after A/C and only one Taxol, which was on November 3. My hair now is only a little more than 1/4" long. That's more than three months and I'm freaking out about it... I cannot imagine going through warm weather with a wig but at this rate I'm not sure I'll have much choice.

Bottom line? You're all looking just gorgeous...and I'm so envious!!

Jenniferx, LOVE that haircut and color! Just stunning.

Tewks, Don't worry, every woman I know who's lost their hair to chemo grows it back at different rates. One friend only took six weeks to go hat free, another friend six months. You'll get ther

    You all look gorgeous!!

Meanwhile, I came on to ask about opinions re minoxidil. Although I didnt want to use it, it may be worth a try. Those 10 years on tamoxifen (5), then femara (5) and then chemo and numerous surgical procedures have left me with SUCH thin hair. Help! What are your minoxidil experiences?

    THANKS!

Hi MamaOz- I'm doing ok on it. I started first week of Sept and only noticeable side effect is the achiness and joint pain. The joint painkind of sucks. It seems worst in morning when I wake up. I do find exercise helps. Had my exchange surgery a few weeks ago so it's been a tough few weeks with the joint pain as I haven't been able to exercise as I'd like. Other than that it's been ok. Got prolia shot in Jan and no side effects from that. I see my MO Friday and I'm going to tell him about the joint pain and see what he suggests. I don't want to switch to another AI yet as I'm afraid they might be worse (the devil I know). It's ok. I guess I can live with it but open to what he has to say. I'm on Teva brand. I've read sometimes joint pain gets better as time goes on but for me so far that hasn't been the case. Hope all is well otherwise!!

6 weeks past chemo, and I still look bald. My hair is about 1/16 of an inch long, and all white, almost translucent. I’m getting worried. So many people have much more hair growth at this point. The Taxotere permanent hair loss has me terrified. I hope the fact I kept my brows and lashes is a good sign. image

Orangedaisy: I didn't see any hair growth until I was 2 months PFC. Before then, my hair was also very short and translucent. You'll probably start to see the hair soon. You are so lucky to have kept your brows and lashes! I lost my brows and lashes a couple of times.

Bellasmom thanks for the positive words. I'm impatient and tired of the itchy stubble. If it would grow a bit, I'd stop wearing hats.

Winnie, thanks for the link. Anything you have to join a club to buy makes me wary.

Hi Orangedaisy- I was also on taxotere and I was very worried too. My hair seemed to grow at a slower rate than other people I have seen on here. I didn't even count the first month thinking that the chemo had to get out of my system a little. The first hair that I had growing in was translucent too, but the darker hair grew in and my last chemo was March 23, 2017 so I am almost a year out and my hair looks like a short haircut now instead of chemo growing out hair. I want to say have patience, but I knew I didn't, I was measuring it-when it got long enough to measure.

Love the pics, ladies!! I can’t wait to get as far as some of you but for now I’ve settled into where I’m at.

Orangedaisy, I was anxious at first but once growth started, it picked up speed. I did Taxol.

Here’s 6 weeks versus 16 weeks ( I did a brown root touch up a few weeks ago to get rid of some of my new greys.)

Mistyeyes, LOL I am measuring it too often. I think I found some an 1/8 inch long, but most seem stuck at 1/16. I calculated if my hair is growing at its pre chemo pace, it should grow 1/16 inch every 5 days. I’m pretty sure it’s not yet

Flynn, I would take your 6 week look right now over mine!. I love your 16 week style! I let my color grow out for almost a year before diagnosis/chem, but if it stays white all over, I'm gonna have to color it while it is short.

I'm going to Houston on business in a couple of weeks. I've got to find some lighter weight hats.

I am 9 months PFC. That seems so weird to say. It doesn’t feel like it’s been 9 months, it feels much shorter.

Anyway...hair struggles. My previous hair was dark brown with natural Auburn highlights, very healthy as I never did anything except brush it and let it air dry. Now I have much darker and curly hair that seems so dry no matter what I do. I don’t know what to do with this hair!

It doesn’t looks like it but it’s very dry IMO, it’s frizzy no matter what I do. I have bought close to $300 worth of hair stuff to try and get it to not look dry I’m just not having luck.

Has anybody had any great success with finding something that works?

    I have tried:

Bed head haze glaze smoothing serum

    Bed head control freak serum

    Garnier Fructis curl controlling gel

    Silk 18 conditioner

Royal locks dream cream and curling spray

    OUAI wave spray

    OUAI soft mousse

Plus headbands, buffs, plastic headbands, beaded headbands, special picks, combs, hair brushes blah blah blah. It’s crazy the amount of money I spent on hair plus of course the $1850 to cold cap 9nky to lose 90% of my hair anyway.

Am I missing some amazing product that make hair look shiny, healthy and controls frizz?

Mquara I've dealt with the same problems. It took a while to figure out what works. When my hair was super curly, I used Loreal Cleansing Conditioner for curly hair. I'd then put Frizz Ease serum on it, then aragan oil and then Kevin Murphy's Killer Curls. His products are expensive, but I'm willing to shell out the money if it works. I'd then use Bed Head Manipulator to style and Bed Head After party on the ends, as well as Bed Head Hard Head hair spray. It probably sounds crazy to use that many different products, but whatever. They worked.

My curl has fallen out, but my hair is still dry. I use Biolage Hydrosource Daily Leave in Cream and it really helps make my hair look less fried. I also use their ultra hydrosource shampoo, conditioning balm and hair masque. That stuff is AMAZING! I wish I'd known about it when my hair was curly!

I know you're frustrated with your hair, but it looks really cute in your pic. I think we kind of have to let it do what it wants somewhat. When I tried straightening mine, it looked even worse. I have a ton of headbands and became very skilled at using bobby pins. It took some time before I could figure out how to deal with my hair.

I hope my reply helps. You're definitely not alone with these struggles.

Mquara - I think your hair looks great.  I use Shea Moisture brand Jamaican Black Caster Oil strengthen & Grow Leaave-in Conditioner.  It is in the stores in the ethnic hair section.

You look beautiful Jenniferx. Way to rock the short haircut! I'm at 50 weeks post final chemo and my hair is approximately 4 inches long. My hairdresser trimmed it up the beginning of January because the first growth ends were pretty frizzy looking so she cut off 1/4 to 1/2 inch pretty much all over. I hated to see anything being cut because it takes SO LONG to feel like you have any length. Patience is hard but it's what we all have to have till the hair comes back. Sometimes you just have to get over yourself and go out without a wig or hat even if you feel like it's too short. I too did a lot of headbands when it was super short to add some femininity to the "crewcut" look. I've never been a fan of short hair so this process has definitely been humbling.

Has anyone tried the clip in hair extensions? My hair is about an inch long after six long months. I just ordered some curly clip in extensions from Amazon. They were cheap so I'd figured I'd try them. Just curious if anyone else had tried them.

Does anyone know - if you don't clip your hair how many days does it take to all fall out?

I got febrile neutropenia before I could shave it & now my neutrophils are still really low & I can't afford any scratches, scrapes or nicks so I'm going to just led it shed and I'm curious how long it will take ...

Moth, my understanding is that it falls out between Days 19-21.
