Stop Smoking Support Thread

While we may feel better we do never forget! I can see this from reading some posts, and from what I experience. I still find myself after 21 months to have a smoke when a "crisis" or something I don't like crops up. Annde, unless you are a smoker, most nonsmokers don't get us. We get each other. Probably that's why we like each other - a friend in need, someone to smoke with, whatever! But we are also here for each other whenever you need another person. So don't give up. Relationships always are evolving. I've been with my dh for 14 years - yikes, surprised I haven't done something. I remember when we were first together, he told me that in every relationship there is valley and peaks. I'm still waiting for the "peaks". So you are not alone as I'm sure many individuals in a relationship are experiencing valleys and peaks. So, for all of those in the throes of quitting, take baby steps first before you do the adult steps. We are here for you, remember that!

Thank you Judi baby steps is all i can do right now life is so upside down and feel so alone. On a good note today a friend I haven't seen in awhile stop by was a really nice visit and was nice to know I was still thought of and could count on her for anything. Hugs and goodnight oh ya i smoked today but not as much even in front of my friend but as she said there is a time and a place and it will happen and doesn't think of me any different.

Good luck vicky3, mrskimber47, and annde. I agree with the others who say it is hard but oh so worth it. It does get easier but we do have to keep pushing our way past the urges to smoke. These do get fewer and farther between, thank God, but they can still derail us. Anyway, just believe us that it does get better. It is so nice not to smell like cigarettes. It is so nice to use that money for something else. It is so nice to not be a slave to the addiction. I as at a social event last week and was totally repulsed by the smoke. By the end of the night my throat even felt scratchy like when I smoked. I really hated being around those smokers, but it was a really good reminder of how bad it actually made me feel.

Dunesleeper, thanks for the chuckle. You go girl!
Annde, I don't know in Ontario where you live, but I too live in Ontario. If you need a shoulder, I'm here - live north of Toronto.

Well Annde, hate to say it but I've never been to Timmins. Never past north of Sudbury but I hear it's beautiful country. Too many bears up north for me - was up to Lake Rosseau and the girl in the coffee shop was telling me they see them all the time. Thanks but no thanks. I live in Mansfield - 30 minutes west of Barrie. No bears - only coyotes and I hear wolves. Man, I need to live in a bubble! But any time you need a shoulder, I'm here - PM me. But all the ladies are here as well and we will support you no matter what. Good to hear that you have cut back on the smokes - see that is a big start. When you are ready, you will know it. We all deal with it in our own way and these ladies here can help you with their methods. Keep it up - you are strong! I echo Becker's words!

meimcbee, first I cut way back on the number of cigarettes I smoked, at the last two to three days I was setting out 6 cig a day to be used whenever I wanted during the day, I had already ordered my e cig from the internet, it was on the middle level of mg of nicotine. When the cigs were gone that was it, I just used the e cig when the cravings would hit, I posted often for the support and reread many back pages to see how other people had done it, I also took up gum chewing. Always had many flavors to choode from, used a lot of cinnamon flavor as it was so strong. I cleaned my house from top to bottom, it was the cleanest it had ever been before or since. I went to bed early since you cannot smoke when you are asleep. I cut back on the mg of nicotine in the e cig and gradually got to zero, which I still keep around for the stress full times. I have been a non-smoker for 20 months now and only post now and then, I always read the thread, and will respond at times. It is the greatest support group of strong women you will ever find, always there and always cheering you on, good luck to you, stay strong, it can be done. Karen

I found out I had tumor in Feb, dad died in Mar. Found out approx 2 weeks later it was cancer, had bilat lumpectomies Apr 10. Still smoking as much as ever. Met with RO who was blunt about danger of radiating entire chest as I had bilat BC. Knew I HAD to quit in order for immed reconstruction. I had lost hope I would EVER quit. No confidence. I had patches from previous intention to quit, I had ecigs from previous attempt to quit. I didn't pick a date really, it was more like a last pack. I stayed up til 2:30 to smoke the last one with tears streaming down my face. I asked God for help. I used patch for one week, ecig approx 2 weeks. Then bought non-nicotine ecig for a "binky" and it actually got me through some rough times. I don't really use that any more. I have toughed out some MAJOR triggers with help from this thread and binky. Just knew I could not smoke. Now that I had the surgery 3 weeks ago, I can't because I am healing. Now have infection. Pray it's not cause I was smoker. Then it will be Arimidex or Tamoxifen and can't smoke with those. I really don't want to ever smoke again. I know what you are going through.

I had my last stick on the day before my mx. Never looked back.

Beckers, you know in your heart that the infection isn't from you having been a smoker. Stay strong, all of you.
Just for today we will not smoke!

Welcome newbies! I don't check in as often as I used to, but I'm there in spirit cheering everyone on to becoming non-smokers. I never thought I'd quit, but it's been 2 years. Wow! If I can do it, anybody can!
Karen: FOOTBALL!! Finally!

Bama, made my day, are NFL teams playing tomorrow too I wonder, then it will have been a super weekend!!

Karen and Bama, my dh loves football as much as you. He asked me if you guys can give him some betting tips? Ha, ha. I told him you have your favourite teams already!

JudiH, we are absolutely no good at betting tips, but we are die-hard fans. We waited a long time for football season to come around this year - now all is right with the world, weekend viewing is in full swing!!!

Thanks Karen. I don't know who he is favouring this year but I'm sure to find out soon. I think I saw some football on the t.v. so I'm sure he is watching just like you two!

DH must be watching college football as we are, AHHHH Bama, may it be the only losing game of the season. Karen

Karen: Unfortunately, probably not. Auburn has a very young team. QB's first year and a young defensive line. But they didn't look bad, just raw. I'm sure they'll get better and better. When does your team start playing? I was so desperate/excited yesterday that I was watching teams I'd never head of with final scores like 75-2 !!
Judi: The only sure bet I can give you is to bet against Auburn at the end of the year when they play Alabama. Man, Alabama looked good against Michigan

Bama, I watched that one too, how starved for football were we? The Buffalo Bills play next Sunday at 1:00, we have struggled mightily in the preseason games, no wins there at all. Hopefully the team will coalesce as the season goes on. Anyway, I hope we do. Karen

12 weeks smoke free woohoo!!!! Ok so now i'm switching to months. Does 3 months sound better than 12 weeks?
Don't know anything about football other than it keeps my hubby occupied.0 -
Beckers, months is a grand word, CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been REAL cigarette free since 7/28....today is my first nicotine free day. I confess I have an e-cig with the ZERO mg nicotine cartridges now - I worked my way from the "full strength" down to these......"my binky". I smoked Menthol so it's a double whammy.
BMX is 4 weeks from today. Off to the store later for a variety of sugarless gum!

Karen and LadyinBama, me wee dh thanks you for the laugh. He was riding his stationary bike and almost choked with laughter. He says you are just like him. He also said to tell you to keep him posted on injuries, etc. and he will bet that way. He loved you last comment LadyinBama about betting against Auburn - that's where he almost choked. I'm sure he will be asking me to ask you ladies for tips!

Beckers, is CONGRATULATIONS A BIG WORD! I love months - they do sound like you have been free of the nasties for a longer time. I'm so proud of you. A big congratulations also to SimplyAudre - you must be very proud of yourself.
I'm now coming up to 22 months yet yesterday the urge to sit and have a drink/smoke at an outdoor patio was strong. DH said to keep moving! I hate these passing moments where I could fail!
But to both of you - you must be very proud of yourself!

Day 4 no more nicotine. E-cigarette cartridges now plain menthol. Bought some vanilla ones to break the menthol habit. Finding I am not picking that thing up as much....chewing more sugar free gum (no more nicorette).
40 days no REAL cigs.
4 days nicotine free.
BIG sigh. If I can do this, anyone can. No one has "The disease of more" any worse than I do.
Just for today, I am cigarette and smoke free. Just for this moment. Just for right now.

You go Audrey!!! Great job!
Hi Beckers. Still here. I've just been reading. I'm really wanting one today, but that's just tough toodles. LOL. I think pain meds make me crave them more. I had my exchange surgery Tuesday, and I took pain meds this morning. I guess that's why I'm craving the stupid things. It's not bad though. No WAY will I pickthem back up. Not going to happen. No freaking way!

Audrey, congratulations!!!!!!!!! I'm so happy for you. 40 days!!! I too used my ecig no nicotine, for a few weeks but now I don't even remember where I put it. :-). Keep up the good work. I love this thread too. It's been my accountability partner.
Hi Dunes! How's the pain? I'm still on vicodin at 4 weeks post. Not too many cravings lately...knock on wood! My trigger is stress or anger....that's when I want to smoke so bad. I'm glad your surgery went well. How does it feel to have your implants now. Glad the wait is over.0 -
