Iodine, thyroid, and breast cancer??

Viv - thanks for posting about not taking iodine 2 hours before or after other supplements. I had no idea! I have tried to get some clarity on how to take my supplements (since there are so many!) - with food, without, with others, without. No one seems to know. Are you aware of any other mixtures that should be avoided?

I bought Nature's Way DIM also and now I see that it has only 12.5 mg of diindolynethane, 3mg of Vit E and 50mg of powdered spinach, cabbage and broccoli...is that the same as yours Fairy?

Terri, OMG- You are not taking magnesium??? No wonder you have clogged pipes. Take it before bed. Not only will it help you sleep, you will be regular by the morning! If not, take a combo of mag and vit c. It is the best natural laxative around. My chiro had me do a colon cleanse by using a product that was just mg and C. It really does the trick. Also, unless you are taking lugols iodine formula, you probably will not see any benefits. Most of those iodine drops are just not enough to make any difference. Plus, if they come from kelp, they could be contaminated with heavy metals. Yes, it is all very complicated. There is always more to learn.
L-now that I have detoxed, I do not have anymore body odor. I do not even use deodorant anymore. Honest. sniff sniff

L-make sure the multi you take with the iodine is mineral multi only. It should not have the other antioxidants that many multis have such as c and d. Remember, you need to take the anti ox later.
Hey I just learned all this last week reading the iodine group. You guys have got to check it out.
Oh and do not take iodine on an empty stomach or it may cause upset.

Thanks Vivre! I'll get some magnesium tomorrow! I'd soooo like to be regular, I've always had problems and that's probably the main reason I'm feeling "crappy" - excuse the pun !

Y'all,
A new article came out this week that explains everything we need to know about iodine and breast cancer. All the research. I'm so excited that it's all in one place.

Thanks lucy88, that's a great collection of articles. Now I want to get Dr. Brownstein's book. The part I'm in the dark about is how to know if you are taking too much iodine. What should your MD monitor (some blood test?)?
0 -
Thanks Lucy. I've read Dr Brownstein's book and have been taking iodine. To address Timothy's question, he talks about test for thyroid function but I don't recall him mentioning tests for iodine levels specifically. At my last onco appt., I asked about Iodine levels and she said she never heard about iodine and breast cancer. I was very disappointed. He said Japanese women get 10 times our levels in their diet so I doubt that taking the recommended doses would create a problem. I would like a test to be sure though.

Lucy, thank you for that link!!

Lucy, I have been reading that link all day long. Very interesting. Thanks!
OMG, I had no idea about not taking iodoral with other supplements. OMG, something else to remember .
Do you girls take the co-factor with the iodoral? If so how many of those a day? Should that be taken when the iodoral is taken??? I have been taking two 12.5 iodoral with one co-factor in the am and then the same thing in the afternoon. Is this good or bad?
Thanks, Patty

I am switching my thyroid meds...from pig to bioidentical T3, T4 thyroid meds for two reasons.
1. My stomach feels sick after taking the new "pig" thyroid med's.
2. Is it possible to be allergetic to the new "pig" thyroid?
I ask this question to my naturalpath dr. and she said, possible. She said that my body could see the pig throid as foreign and it could affect my immunity...developing an autoimunity disease...in regard to my immune system attacking my thyroid.
If the new T3 and T4 doesn't help, I will go back to the new Armour. I'm hoping it works. She also said the vitamin D could be upsetting my stomach. What is your experience with the new Armour?
Monday I had a mri and I'm hoping that I'm cancer clear this year. I've been banking on getting the thyroid healthy, iodine, and taking vitamin D will prevent further recurrences. Hope so...

Great, concise article on iodine:

Barry, do you participate in the yahoo iodine group? I think you will find your answers there. They discuss thyroid meds a lot. You can link to it and join from naturalthryroidchoices.org (or com)

barry, what about naturethroid? I've read many comments in the iodine group about people not liking armour since it was reformulated and many are switching to naturethroid.
I take my iodine first thing. I'm so fond of the watermelon juice I've been drinking since June, but the watermelons aren't as good this time of year. I put salt in my juice and iodine is the first supplement I take. I don't ever have any stomach upset from the iodine that I can recall.

Thanks, I did join the yahoo group, but found it a lot of e-mails that were difficult to understand. I felt as if I was reading people's private info. I haven't read it in a week. This is a simpliar place to come with my iodine/thyroid questions. Vivre, I did read the iodine article...good. I've taken a two day rest from my vitamins. I feel so much better. My naturalpathic doctor is asking the compounding pharmacy to mix several vit's into the thyroid med's so I don't take so many pills. I hope it works.

That is a great idea Barry. We are always wondering what to combine with what, and I am sure the compounding pharmacist will put it all together for you the right way. I agree about the yahoo group. It is VERY hard to follow. That is one reason I am so hell bent on starting a site that is easier to understand. The information I have gleaned from others has been invaluable to me. Nothing like the voices of experience. (see my note about FlLady on natural girls)

Barry, I did the iodine loading test and consulted (for free) with Dr. Flechas 2 times now. I take
2 ATP co factors with the Iodoral (50mg) each morning. However, I think it would depend on your test. There was someone here who was very very low and took 2 50mg Iodorals. ALso, there are other supplements to help absorption listed on the breastcancerchoices.org thread. buffered C, magnesium, selenium are the ones I remember off top of head.I agree, what a great idea to get a compounding pharmacist to help.
I switched from Synthroid to Naturthroid recently, given the buzz on the reformulation of Armours and the shortage.

What in a nutshell is the means to determine if 50mg daily is too much? Simply getting adverse side effects? From what I've read, it suggests (and I could be wrong on this) that excess iodine doesn't adversely affect the thyroid or other organs. Is that correct?
0 -
Can you take too much iodine? What would the side affects for too much iodine or too little?
0 -
I hear about side effects like acne, metallic taste in mouth, etc. That sounds easy to spot. I'm more concerned with knowing if there is something more dangerous but less obvious. My wife will be getting her thyroid levels tested periodically, as she has slighty hypothyroid and is on synthroid.

I seem to remember something like 150 mg to be getting in the high range but am not sure. I think I read someone discussing this on the iodine thread. The acne and metallic taste is a sign that the iodine is pushing out all the toxins in every way possible, the pores, saliva, etc. It also means you need to do the salt loading to get the toxins out and make sure you are taking some kind of liver support so the liver is able to filter and not get backed up.
I just decided to up my dose a bit, from 50-65 and see what happens. I also decided to do what Step (on her group) does, and take the weekends off to rest the kidneys. I sure have to go a lot. Also, I ran into an herbalist and she said that when she looked at my eyes she could tell I had kidney fatigue. (I did not tell her anything I was doing so this was interesting to me).
0 -
Oh gosh. Kidney fatigue. I had not heard that iodine may stress kidneys. hmm.

It's my understanding that taking large doses of iodine will cause competition for the same receptors as bromine, flouride, and chlorine. When the toxins are bumped from their camping spot, it can cause what people commonly call detox symptoms, which can be anything from headaches to stinky armpits and/or urine, cloudy urine, and more that I can't think of right now. Too much detoxing at once can be stressful on other organs, so backing off the iodine temporarily can slow the detoxing and alleviate the stress on liver, adrenals, and kidneys.

Althea, do you skip a number of days a week to "back off temporarily"?

spring, I went many months without ever missing a day of supplements. Then I started skipping a day here and there probably around september. From jan-june, I supplemented with 50 mg of iodine. I was loosely following the protocol of companion supplements until I started paying more attention to dose amounts in june.
That's also when I started taking atp cofactors when I learned that I probably have symporters defects affecting my ability to absorb the iodine. So when I got to mid july and my ass is still dragging, I decided to increase the iodine to 100 mg/day. Detox symptoms were more noticeable, so I decided to back off a day here and there in september. I've had several days of feeling pretty darn good this month. I'd like lots more of them, but just having any at all is an improvement.

Thank you Althea. Good to know.
Vivre,
I read this entire article, as did my husband. He is now taking an Iodoral and ATP cofactore per day! (we started our teen-aged daugters as well...)

I am not sure what happened to that link. It worked great before and it was a very indepth article.

Anom, you're right, it's not working. Even my bookmarked version. Maybe a server is down, it is a holiday week. I'd try next week.
I am glad I printed it out. It's worth trying to access again. Thx to vivre for posting...

I have something to report. I started taking Iodoral several months ago. I had some slight SEs but they passed. Recently Viv reported (I'm pretty sure it was you, Viv) that Iodoral should be taken 2 hours apart from other supplements. It was when I took this advice that I started to experience detox symptoms again. There must be something to taking it apart from other supps. Just thought I would share this with everyone. Could it have been doing nothing for me all of these months when I was lumping it in with other supplements. And, if that is the case, am I cancelling out the absorption of other supplements by lumping them together. There is just not enough time in the day to separate all of the supplements I take out this way!
