Oh great... I just found out that all the FREON leaked completely out of our air conditioning system!! Does anyone happen to know anything about freon?? I've been Googling like crazy and of course I'm finding that it's a carcinogen. This is the LAST thing I needed to be exposed to. Any idea on whether you can detox your body specifically from freon contamination??

Sorry this is somewhat off topic, but I just had to ask in case anyone has heard anything about this!

Beth, Thanks for getting back with your similar story. So far I'm not getting too excited about it but I will keep an eye on my #'s for the next few months.

    Hi Terri,

I have been thinking about you. Glad some of the gals have been giving you some of their experience with iodine.

Crunchy...sorry I don't know the answer...but I do know that worrying about a contaminant and what to do about it is definitely not off topic here.  Hopefully someone can direct you to proper information.

crunchy, I don't know about the freon issue either.   My mom's freon was leaking last year, and she has pet turtles that like to hang out in the liriope near her condenser.  She also uses clorox to clean their pools once a week.  Her turtles are many decades old and seem to be fine.  My mom is now a 30 year bc survivor and will turn 83 this year.  The only treatment she had was surgery, but in her day, they were very aggressive in removing things, tissue, muscle, lymph nodes. As I was going through treatments, surgery was what scared me to pieces, and I'm sure it's because I knew how my mom was never the same after hers.

I almost forgot to post what I came here to announce -- today is my 5-year anniversary of completing chemo!  It's one of those mixed bag things -- glad to be done, but the next part was a nightmare from hell.  Thanks to these forums I learned about diep reconstruction and the great doctors in new orleans.  I decided to get my surgery there, and my local doctors scared me nearly to death.  I needed paperwork from my local doctors to be sent to the nola doctors, and I was hitting obstacles with every breath.  It's nothing short of a miracle that I didn't erupt in shingles from head to toe.

With hindsight, I realize that my choice of surgeons was the wisest decision I made that entire year.  I had the best medical experience of my life in new orleans.  And why on earth my local doctors were looking down their nose at my choice, well, there's just no ethical reason for it whatsoever.  They caused me so much stress and it was completely unnecessary.   I ended up changing oncologists midstream.  I'm finally feeling more energy after being tired for YEARS.  I'm so very grateful for this thread and all the lovely ladies that add to the growing pool of useful information here.

    Congratulations Althea!

Those of you gals who are taking Grape Seed Extract: did anyone have joint pains with it??

A few days ago I started with knee pain (very similiar pain to when I took Arimidex). I am just thinking perhaps I am taking too much GSE. I take 200 mgs. I think I will knock it back a bit to 100 mgs. to see what happens.

Just returning from my 9 year check up and every June I reread the book "Your Life in Your Hands (renamed 'The No-Dairy Breast Cancer Prevention Program" by Jane Plant, PhD.).

To those posts that don't support your "alternative" diet... I say they work for industry.  Talk to your oncologist.  Mine now refers individuals to a nutritionist and guess what they're told NOT to eat....dairy!

If your local library doesn't have a copy, let me know. I'd be happy to forward along mine, but I will  need it back before next June.  Seriously, I wish every cancer resource library had this book.

p.s. I only took Tamoxifen for three months.  Hated the side affects and I'd already come off of two other major surgeries and I was only  37!

Congratulations on the 5 years Althea!

And your experience just goes to show that we really do have to make our own decisions, not always follow the doctor's godly advice, which is just their own opinion.

    Hi supermom101

Congrats on 9 year check up. And yes, many of us are turning away from dairy.....I was appalled to see that although I buy organic milk...its the horrid plastic tubes from the cow to the container being so toxic that turned my stomach.....the gals have led me to the road of drinking rice milk.Cool

Thanks everyone for all the well wishes.

supermom101, congrats on your 9 year anniversary!  I had Jane Plant's book on my list for the longest time.  My local library doesn't have, and I couldn't even get it through the interlibrary loan system.  Now I have my own copy that my brother gave me as a gift.  I haven't read it yet, but I was frankly a bit crestfallen when I saw that she recommends soy.  I've gone round and round, back and forth on the soy thing and had concluded once more that it's no soy for me.  I'll be interested to see if I change my mind again on that topic.

Supermom101...CONGRATULATIONS on your 9 year anniversary of wellness. It's great to hear from someone who is living healthy and thriving!

Quick question to all, is it better to take ATP Co-factors or should I take a B -Complex or both? Also, did I read correctly that taking too much Niacin is not good? Is 500mg OK?

Hello - am new to this - had Stage 2a ER+ / PR+ / HER2- BC 5 years ago and now have bone mets.  Treatment has started menopause - night sweats and insomnia. Have a healthy diet with lots of raw fruit and veg as well as exercise and meditation.  Does anyone know of non estrogenic remedies to alleviate these symptoms?   My oncology pharmacist has recommended sage tea, but there must be others out there?

Thanks so much for all the well wishes. It certainly is a small world and I don't know why it has taken 9 years of wellness to have me finally post to this blog.  I've sort of taken the Hippocrates approach to my health:

Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food.

Can't say enough about Jane Plant's book the "No-Dairy Breast Cancer Prevention book" and "Your Life in Your Hands." Here's a few more resources:

http://www.cancerproject.org/ (basically promotes a vegan diet)

http://www.sustainabletable.com/ (terrific facts and figures on the growth hormones in our dairy and meat supply - natural and synthetic)

http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource (Harvard University School of Nutrition and their recommended food pyramid) - not the USDA government/industry sponsored nonsense

Several books you may have heard of: "The China Study", The Omnivore's Dilemia and of course the movie, Food Inc.  (You'll never look a your dinner the same way again.)

Since I have been in menopause (had the ovaries removed 9 years ago) I drink organic, unsweetened soy milk for the hot flashes.

I've been blogging about the "Western diet" and the host of diseases that are directly related to it  for over a year and would love to hear what you think of it http://www.supermom101.com/

So...if we are what we eat...are you cheap, fast and easy? - Bumper Sticker

Penne...Melatonin for insomnia.....Melatonin is also an aromatase inhibitor.  Start out with 1 to 5 mg taken a couple hours before your bedtime.  I take at least 20 mg which means my body manufactures very little.  Many cannot tolerate as much as I take.  You have to work up to it gradually if you want to take more as I do for the aromatase inhibitor effects.

I you take more than your body can handle, you will have vivid strange dreams and be groggy the next day.  So it might be best to try 1 or 5 mg on a Fri or Sat night in case you are groggy the next day.

I am still working on determining my ultimate potion....I am trying mixing 5 mg tablets with 3 mg timed release and sublingual 1 mg tablets and trying out different times of taking them.  I think it actually works better for me to take the timed release and a couple 5 mg tablets at 8 or 9 pm and then 5 sublinguals at bedtime.  I am also finding that different brands are more potent than others.  I've been experimenting with GNC and Life Extension.

Patty, sorry it took so long for me to get back here. One must continue to take calcium, even when taking strontium, BUT be sure to space them 2 to 3 hours apart because they kind of fight for absorption and we want both of them to be absorbed.

I take 680 mg per day--2 tabs right before bed. Doctor's Best Strontium Bone Maker and AOR passed independent tests that said they actually contain what they say.

Here's a Web site that has a lot of info on strontium. Although it is a blog, this woman has documented her research in a source list. Her "Skeleton Pirate" pic is very imaginative.

    http://strontiumforbones.blogspot.com

Good luck with strontium. Here's hoping your next bone density test looks a lot like mine did.
