MattyGroves:  The only time my coconut oil is liquid is when it's hot for many days in a row (80's).  Weird that they would sell it with a pump, since mine is mostly hard year round.  Maybe it was made for use in professional kitchens where it's always too hot.

I see much talk about soy.  What does everyone think of flaxseed?  My onc and naturopath said no flaxseed.  I've just starting seeing a naturopath who specializes in oncology who said I should consume flaxseed moderately - maybe 1 T ground daily.

He also has me eating sea vegetables.  Ugh!  They seem to ruin perfectly wonderful homemade soups!  Does anyone have a good solution for including sea vegetables in your diet?

    Makingway and all--

About chia. Do you have any web sites you recommend? I love flax oil for inflammation tho everybody else says get cod liver oil or fermented cod liver oil $$$. Cod and salmon repeat on me terribly even straight from the fish.

It's interesting that the omega 3 oils have different properties. Apparently even  "snake oil" was a Chinese omega 3 in the 1800s that has since become a slur.

It's great that we have such diverse practitioners and research paths. MBJ, does Dr. G have you on any particular one? Sorry if you already mentioned it.

Flaxseeds (not the oil, but the ground seeds) contain lignans, which flush bad estrogens from the body. It is one of the main things I'm using therapeutically. I've seen people asking about it being bad before on these boards but have no idea why- I have never seen any studies or articles actually suggesting it is estrogenic. Anyone?

I hate seaweeds too- it is possibe to buy kelp pills which I much prefer. Also, I make veggie stem stocks to cook soups, grains, beans, whatever in and put lots of seaweed in there- mixed with all the veggies, I can't taste it by the time I eat it. Also, some kinds are stronger tasting than others- try arame.

    Jessamine,

Somebody posted a scientific article a year ago about the myth of so-called estrogenic foods having any impact on ER+ cancern in actual people.

Also, seaweeds are so contaminated with arsenic and other pollutants now. So are the kelp tablets. Have you looked into taking iodine instead? There is a whole thread on it.

What are these stem stocks?  I luv soups!

The only problem I have seen with flaxseed is that it is very unstable so chia seeds seem to be more stable (don't require refreigeration).  That said, Dr. G recommends doing the Budwig method of mixing fresh ground flax seeds (I keep them refrigerated), with flax oil and organic cottage cheese with my fruit smoothies.

Janeluvsdogs:  Sorry, I am not sure that I understood your question.  Are you asking me what supplements Dr. G has me on?

    MBJ,

I wondered if Dr. G had you on a particular Omega 3 but you answered my question with the flax seed +flax oil Budwig protocol. Happy to hear that.

If you wouldn't mind sharing what other goodies he has you on, we'd love to hear Smile

I didn't know that about the kelp pills- I imagine there are some brands that are clean, just as there are clean sources of fresh seaweed. But I admit, I take iodoral myself. Can you be more specific re: the flaxseed article? I'm not sure I totally understand what it proves/disproves and I would like to see it. For the record I hae tested my 2/16 ratios with and without flax and can assure you (all) that it does have a beneficial effect. Not saying it's the only thing that does- just that it does.

STOCK- (I get excited about cooking stuff)- I save all the stems and extra leaves and whatever parts I don't eat from my veggies in a bag in the freezer- every week or so I put them in a big pot with lots of water, seaweed, onion, garlic, sometimes dried shitakes or reishis and a few peppercorns and simmer it down for some hours. After it cools I remove all the stuff and toss it, and strain the rest into jars for the freezer. I use it in cooking for everything I would use water for. Rebecca Katz ( http://rebeccakatz.com/books/cancer_fighting_kitchen.html ) hasa good stock recipe if anyone wants something more specific. That way I get all the nutrients I possibly can from my expensive organic vegetables! (and add a lot to grains and such). Also It's tasty.

    MBJ,

    ThankyouThankyouThankyou!

How nice of you to share your regimen with us. I'm making a copy. It is great stuff and a good reminder to me personally of things I've let lag that I used to be religious about like Turmeric and Resveratrol. I was working up the melatonin dosage (doc wants me up to 20 mg) but I was getting a little drowsy in the morning.

Thank you again. It's so nice Smile

jessamine, I started making my own stock too last year.  What kind of jars are suitable for the freezer?  I've been reusing yogurt containers.  Not only is that plastic not intended for reuse, I know it's even more problematic in the freezer.  I have some enamel nesting bowls, but not enough, and I don't know where to find more.  I'd prefer glass anyway, as long as it doesn't crack!

Great idea about the stock for sea veggies!  I really like freezing unused organic veggies stems, etc. for stocks too.  Thanks so much. I save the water from steamed veggies for my soup (though sometimes the dogs get it).  I buy organic sea veggies, which I thought prevented any issues of toxic elements.  I'll have to look into that more.

I feel better now about adding the flaxseed back into my diet.

Althea, I freeze things in pyrex or anchor glass containers (anchor has some containers with BPA free lids).

Do we ever get off all the supplements?  It's so expensive!

jessamine, I love making stock too -- so nutritious! I love the Pyrex containers for stock too, and also you can freeze liquids in the straight-sided mason jars (they will say "freezer-safe"), so I use those sometimes when my Pyrex is all in use.

yes, I use mason jars- the trick is to leave an inch or two empty at the top for the liquid to expand in to. But I think (weirdly) it only works with vegetarian stock- during chemo I was eating a tiny bit of meat broth sometimes and it would break the jars every time. It just expands differently or something.

Estepp Good luck keep us posted on how you feel

about the soy.  My onco told me that the soy I consume in my diet was not enough to hurt me but he did not want me taking soy supplements.   I also saw the same thing about it only helps if you were raised with it eating it everyday.

Green Librarian- I feel the same way about all the supplements. When I typed up my list earlier this week, all I could think was "When do I get to the point where I am just taking a multi-vitamin?" I am certain I will need to be on Magnesium for the rest of my life, considering that my Gluten free diet and magnesium have together combatted my IBS.

I've been taking Curcumin supplements, but started noticing they are giving me stomach pains, so wondering if perhaps I have gallstones that I never knew about. I might stop with the supplementation on that one this week.

Thank you, Jessamine and Crunch Poodle for your recommends for soup stock and storage! I am going to try that this weekend-- and what a great way to use up those expensive organic veggies! Yipppeee!

I go for my hair analysis and my Estronex test this week with my nutritionist-- can't wait to see how I am balancing out on minerals and estrogen.

Estepp:  Congratulations!!!  I hope it helps you too.  I go see my Dr. on Thursday and we will see where I am at with mine.

You are all very welcome--I am more then happy to share!  It wasn't any trouble at all.

Rebecca Katz's Magic Mineral Broth is the best.  I store my vegi stems in the freezer, too!  I bought some great glass containers that work in the freezer and the fridge and found them on Amazon.com after a search.  I think it came 12 or 15 pieces in all different sizes.  They are great!  Not sure if they are Pyrex or not.

Great advice about making broth! But instead of freezing, which will cause some loss in nutrients, why don't you gals learn to can your own broths. This is what I do with my leftover soups, and I can dozens of jars of tomatoes from my garden.

There are directions on canning everywhere, but in a nutshell, this is what I do:

I wash canning jars on the highest temp in the dishwasher. Use them while they are still hot.

Buy new canning jar lids each time, and put keep them in a boiling water bat until you use them.

While soup is hot, using a sterilized ladel (right from the hot dishwasher, and dipped in the boiling water) and a sterilized jar funnel for no mess, fill the jars to about half an inch from the top.

Immediately put the sterilized lid on them.

Lower the jars into a boiling water bath with special jar tongs you can find whereever you see lids and jars.

Boil the jars for at least 20 minutes, you should see the contents bubbling.

Carefully take the jars out of the water, and sit on counter to cool.

Jars are safe to use a couple of years later.

vivre-do you have to pour wax on top of contents in the jar? I've wanted to do this for years, but was afraid I'd do it wrong and make myself sick.

Well, my doctor chose to compound all mine into one pill. Since I take so many Vits. a day.. she thought this is the best for me. So I would not have any cream to put on my face.

I'm posting here, because you are my bc sisters, who appreciate alternative medicine. And I don't think, I'll get attack by the naysayers here...hopefully. Right now...I'm confused and a little overwhelmed. I saw my bs today. They want to do a double mx because they feel rad's is out of the question for me due to a pain syndrome and Hashi's. I never thought having RSD would work in my favor against rads, and some med's. They realized that most drugs are out of the question for me due to bone density risk from RSD. That's the good news.

But...even a mx puts me at high risk for PMPS...and the surgeon said I can't keep my nipple. I think a mx maybe a little drastic for such a small tumor and losing my nipples isn't a pretty picture for me right now.

I'm considering doing nothing but alternative medicine. This is a huge jump for me, and means I've got to go alternative all the way...no white sugar, and regular exercise. The tumor although invaisive is small and slow growing.

I haven't decided yet....just considering with the options I'm given.
