Designermom:  My MIL hasn't started doing it yet, but she has been talking about doing it.  I have to say, I am pretty curious as to how it works, too!

Luan- FYI, in the Nutrisearch Guide ( a Canadian publication), the Swiss brand is rated .5 on a 5.0 scale. Probably not much quality in that product. You get what you pay for in supplements. The cheaper brands use cheaper ingredients.

Have you guys seen the hydroponics at Disney world? It is amazing. I will try to see if I can figure out how to post pictures. I am not very techy. The problem is that they use a lot of nutrients so it is not cheap to grow this way. They must be fed constantly since they do not grow in soil. I hope the price of these systems goes down someday. This would be the best way to grow year round fresh food in all climates. Imagine if we had greenhouses like this everywhere. Isn't there a giant one in England too?

vivre--  Living in NYC, I am fantasizing using a couple of these pods in my apartment.  I have great light, but no yard.  The video that I listed above uses a system that recirculates water (with nutrients) once every hour by computer.  Therefore it uses very little water or electricity. This chef says he will be able to grow on his NYC rooftop 9 months of the year without covering because the water is warmed and as long as the roots are warm, the plants will survive.  I find this hard to fathom, living in this freezing climate, but in more moderate places it might work.  If it is true that you can get bunches of full grown vegetables from seed to table ready in 4 weeks, it could certainly offset the cost of the unit.  I think they cost about $500.

Designer Mom-I put the video on my website so everyone can find it for the future (in the organic gardening group). I still can't figure out how to post the DW pics. Oh well. But I sure would love to be able to grow year round like that. I still can't fathom how those plants live in the the cold! I just got the soil prepped for my veggie garden yesterday before the storms. So as as soon as I get my plants hardened off, I can put them in. I start most of my plants from seed under a grow light because I can then get varieties I like. I try to stick to heirloom seeds. Can't wait to get a real tomato again.

vivre-  The chef featured in the video is so wonderful.  His hope/vision is that everyone can grow their own organic produce.  He points out that it is unaffordable for many people to buy at farmers markets and Whole Foods (I have noticed!).  His mission (in addition to being a chef of an organic restaurant) is to help people grow their own affordable organic veggies at home.  I bet you could get an interview with him for your website.  Maybe you would have to come to NYC for the interview and we could go to his restaurant for lunch!  Do it after the summer...I'm out of here soon.

I have been getting wonderful yellow squash from my garden and this weekend harvested my first tomatoes.  They were so good eating them sliced.  Looks like I will have a huge crop this year.  That is great because I will can the ones I can eat.

Designermom, Apple:  I found this site, which is perfect for my little balcony!  Not sure about pricing (I will have to compare) but this is great and similar to the type of system shown in the video above!:  http://mytowergarden.com/info.html

Adey I have one by Omni I got it at my local building supply center and I can get my filters there as well.  It is amazing the crud that is in the filter when I change them.  There are several different types of filters that go with my system just depending on what you are wanting to filter out.  I have extremly hard water and when I was doing some major work on my house the contractor suggested it because it will also help my appliances last longer.

Does anyone take Biotin for their hair and nails.  Since tamoxifen my hair and nails are awefull as well as my hair is thinning.  I started taking Biotin 2000 what evers' (don't have the bottel with me at the moment) but wonder if that is enough. I started about a month ago.

SherryC:  I take 10,000-15,000 mcg's of Biotin and I see the difference.  Because you are on drugs that mess with your hair growth, there are some other things you can do to help keep the hair on your head.  I use a natural spray called 183 Topical Solution by Xenna. You can only buy it on line.  The lack of Estrogens in your body allow Testosterone type hormones to kill the hair at the roots so this product helps you keep the hair you have.  There are also many hair products with Biotin that work , some natural, some not.  I also have succumed to using a generic Rogaine, otherwise I would be bald on top and I am not ER/PR positive-it's just the side effects of chemopause.

      Hello,

New to the site.  I live in Las Vegas, NV. and tired of my oncologist.  Always wants to put me on medicine...  I've been off medicine since October.  I need a good oncologist that does alternative and holistic treatment.  Any names and phone #'s will be appreciated.   Thanks!

    Hello everyone,

MBJ, thanks for the Biotin dosage. I have not been taking nearly enough to help my hair and nails. Just bought a new bottle today, so will concentrate on taking more. I have such a hard time getting in all my supplements, as I am trying to take some of my supps seperately for better absorption.... makes it difficult to remember to get them all in my body in a 24 hour period!!

A few questions for the group. Still suffering Plantar F, pain in the heel. I just bought Castor Oil to make Castor Oil packs for my heel. Has anyone had experience with this? If so, did it work for whatever you were using it for? I have a hard time believing it's going to help, but I am desperate for relief.

My next question: I took MSM supplement a few weeks ago to help with joint pain. I still have occasional joint pain from being chronically malnourished, and now from the Plantar F., so I decided to give it a try.  I got sick that evening with bad headache, stomachache, nausea, diahrrea. Since there was a stomach virus going around my daughter's school, I am not sure if I got a virus or if it was MSM. Either way, I've been terrified to try them again. Looking for any anecdotal experience with MSM.

Summer's almost here, and that means more natural Vitamin D!!! Happy for a change in season, even if I'll be sweating it out here in TX in just a month's time.

Marianna I live in south central TX and I am already sweating.  I take liquid glucsoime/chondrointin with MSM and have not had any problems with it.

Adey also on the water filter.  I have some friends who just bought a water distiller and purify all their drinking water.  It tast so good.  I will try to get the info on where they ordered it from.

Marianna ~ Not annectodal because I don't take MSM, but this is the first hit I got Goggling SEs of MSM:

    4. What are the possible side effects of MSM?

The most common side effect is gastrointestinal problems (diarrhea), rash, and headache. Taking MSM with food tends to decrease the GI upset. If you take too much, expect to spend some extra time in the bathroom. Minor cramping is also possible.

It sounds so like your issues, I didn't go any further.    Deanna

Has anyone taken Myomin for an estrogen blocker?

    Hello my graceful naturals,

I come and go...I try to stay in pre cancer mode as often as l can.

I won't bore you again with my love for microalgae's...but...

    cucumber anyone?

I grow a hell of a lot of fruit and vegies. It's almost winter here and I still have some tomatoes and heaps of cucumbers - which is a little unusual for this time of the year. Lots of vegetables growing but too many cucumbers...and I can't even give them away because everyone I know has enough. Anyway I love taking silica for great hair skin and nails, and cucumbers are high in silica...as well as a plethora of other nutrients.

    http://hubpages.com/hub/Health_Benefits_of_Cucumber

Don't pay attention to all the silly ads. Cucumbers are relatively cheap to buy and really easy to grow.

I also rub cucumber on my face...it's a great astringent and really soothing and refreshing.

    Peppercorns anyone?

I take my turmeric with a little olive oil and peppercorn which has the active chemical piperine. I use peppercorns in many of my dishes. Most times I down my turmeric with my salad which has oil and pepper in it.

Here's some info on the health benefits of peppercorns.

    http://hubpages.com/hub/Health-Benefits-of-Peppercorn

    Hope that wasn't too boring?

Corian68 : No I haven't taken Myomin for an estrogen blocker. But I do take grape seed extract, and when I doubled my dosage I got cramping down below like period pain. I used to get some period pain but when I changed my diet...the cramping was reduced to zero. I've halved my dosage of grape seed extract. The only other supplement that gave me pain and cramping was I3C. But I've stopped taking that.

"Withaferin A comes from Withania somnifera, also known as Ashwagandha, whose roots are used in Ayurvedic medicine, which is one of the world's oldest medical systems. It originated in India and has evolved there over thousands of years."

That sounds like it's available as an Ayurvedic med, doesn't it?  Our largest natural foods market has a whole Ayurvedic section.  I'll check with them.  Not that I'd start taking it based on this one study, but it sounds worth looking into.   D.
