Vivre,
Did you talk to Dr. Flechas today?

vivre, I get my iodoral from breastcancerchoices.org. I'm also in the process of getting the loading test to take soon. I inquired about it last year but didn't realize I could get a telephone consult with Dr Fletchas re my results until some threads here recently.
I take 50 mg/day of iodoral. I also take VS Basics daily multivitamin, fish oil for omega 3s, coQ10 200 mg/day, 2000 iu D3 softgels, sublingual B complex, the thyroid supplement I mentioned previously and 5HTP. I use my juicer every day. I walk nearly every day. I do all my own yardwork. Most of the time I feel like a balloon that's lost all its helium.
My daily has 136mg of magnesium. I'm drawing a blank on what food sources would provide the rest. I went through a container of magnesium last year. I know that while taking iodoral it's especially important to have adequate selenium, C and magnesium.

Althea: I love your signature line. It put a smile on my face.
Does anyone have any suggestions for taking tumeric? When I take the capsules, I have unbearable heartburn. I may just have to try adding it to my diet in a more natural way--by cooking with it.
Have a nice day all. I am off to my last chemo! Hopefully not too many side effects this time.

I add grated fresh ginger and tumeric to my breakfast smoothie every morning.I also have acid reflux but this is what I drink everymorning. (Plain yoghurt,Banana, blueberries.strawberries, skimmilk, basil.ginger, tumeric)

I would be interested to find out about turmeric as well. Is there a brand better than other ones? There's so many out there. How many mg per day? I've been dealing with lymphedema for a few years now, so I thought about giving this a shot since it can reduce inflammation.

Hi Everyone,
Sprintime: Make sure to sign up for Ebates so you can receive 5% cash back from Vitacost. You can use it for a bunch of different companies. I received $144.00 cash back in 1 year.
Also, I am off to my MRI which I had to schedule myself since for some reason it had not been done. Many thanks to all for the encourageent and informaiton. I am reading everything......I wish I had time to work on shrinking it but my surgery is scheduled for Monday. They are leaving the slot open for "whatever" based on the MRI findings.
Will keep you updated.
As always,
Grace

Hi ladies-
I met with the nutritionist yesterday and while it was good to discuss with someone face-to-face, it didn't give me that much more info than I already have. Interestingly she isn't much for supplements other than a multi and calcium b/c there haven't been that many studies that prove effectiveness however she did say that taking a CoQ10 or I3C wouldn't hurt me. One thing she did say was to be careful not to heat olive oil above 350 degrees or it becomes very harmful. Yikes--that is the only oil I use and saute everyday! She thinks sauteeing would be ok but I am thinking I should use another oil to cook with--what do you all use?
She did suggest a vitamin D test and since I have been so tired lately, an iron, folate and B-12 test too.
Also some potentially crappy news--when doing my baseline mammo and ultrasound yesterday they decided they want to get some more info on a cyst I have in the affected breast so they are going to do an aspiration.(Mammo showed nothing but I don't really trust them much after it missed both my initial tumor and the smaller one the surgeon found.) If the liquid looks suspicious they will have it tested--if it is not liquid but solid, they will biopsy. Ugh. I was pretty depressed yesterday--was really hoping this was all over...

Grace, signing up for ebates right now! Thanks for the tip... I see the link too! Thanks! This is great. CAn you explain how this works? Does ebates send you a check at the end of the year? I note the discount is not shown on the Vitacost check out ....
Althea, yes, I used to drink organic fat free cows milk and have been trying to find a substite. Rice dream has ingredients in it I do not want to consume, so axed that one. Almond dream in a box, not great. This week, I am trying Organic Hazelnut milk from Pacific. I give it an "eh". The search goes on.. I am still eating low fat feta cheese, I have had a yogurt once in a while. Just cutting back. But I had milk on cereal nearly every morning, so ...
I ordered Turmeric supplements from Vitacost, (click to see the one I ordered). Not sure if it will upset stomach or not, will report back...
Vivre, I also get my Iordoral from breastcancerchoices.org and I take 50mg a day, plust 2 ATP cofactors (Vit B2, B3, per Dr. Flechas' recommendation).

Spring: my local whole Foods has justed started to have coconut milk in their refrigerator case (right next to the milk). I have not tried it because I am merely reducing my dairy not eliminating it, but it might be worth a try if you want to eliminate dairy.

Number one think I've learn about diet and supplements...don't waste your time talking with a nutritionist...it's like talking to a kindergarter about cancer. I've yet to have spoken to one that has researched past what they learned learned in school. I also feel they do not speak freely about supplements in fear of giving out "medical" advise. Don't waste your time.
As for high cholesterol for the first time...if you have chemo and the last two years this still could be a side effect of chemo or rads. Hang in there ladies and give your life style changes time to catch up with treatment damage.
There is a great turmeric thread some where here...I'll try and bump it up.

In the book "Anti Cancer" the doctor says: Take 1/4 teaspoon tumeric with a little black pepper and a little olive oil and drink a cup of green tea. Days when I don´t cook with tumeric I try to do that.

This is a great thread. Took several hours to read though.
Someone asked about green tea, and how to mask the taste. I percolate it, and add a bit of ginger root, when steeping it. Then add a little lemon, and a small amount of stevia, and it tastes pretty tolerable.

I read that your taking turmeric, but the research at Johns Hopkins was done on curcumin..a derivative of turmeric. Here's some pages of research on curcumin at Johns Hopkins and maybe you'd want to be taking curcumin instead, if it applies.
The screen gets too wide, so go to Johns Hopkins and put in a search for curcumin and pages of info will show up.

Here's another site to read on the subject:

Allie--I'm sorry you're having this issue. I had a cyst a couple of years ago which was an issue for me, too. Even though the doctors suspected that it was a cyst, I was given a Birads rating of 4 on my sonogram report! Needless to say, I was pretty distraught. I immediately went for an MRI, which showed nothing (so much for false positives with MRIs!). My surgeon was hopeful that it might have dissolved on its own, but another sonogram revealed that it hadn't. It was aspirated, and as suspected, it was totally benign. I hope your situation turns out to be a similar one.
Rosemary--You're right about the juicing--I'd get a lot more nutrients that way! If I get a juicer, I don't want to spend too much money on it. Anyone have a great juicer that they feel was reasonably priced?
Mandy and others--I fill my own veggie capsules with organic turmeric (which I mix with a little black pepper--based upon the info. in the Anti-Cancer book). Each capsule (size 00, I think) probably holds about 1/4 tsp. I take a capsule with breakfast and then usually another at night (if I remember!). Are you taking your turmeric with food? Maybe if you had a little bit of a meal, then took a capsule, then finished your meal, that might help? Also, not sure if this will help in this situation, but might help someone who experiences heartburn on a regular basis (not specifically from taking a supplement). Although it sounds contradictory, taking in an acid, like apple cider vinegar or lemon juice, can actually help prevent/get rid of heartburn. Often, heartburn results from a lack of stomach acid (i.e., for whatever reason, your body is not producing the amount of stomach acid it needs). Because of this lack of acid, your body starts to produce acid and then basically produces too much, and then you get heartburn. Obviously, this is an oversimplified explanation. When my friend told me about this a few years back, I was quite the skeptic. I told my husband, who was taking Prilosec on a regular basis (every day). With great trepidation, he tried drinking a small amount of undiluted lemon juice (we buy bottles of real, organic lemon juice from our local health food store). Amazingly, his heartburn went away, almost immediately. He never took Prilosec again. Interestingly, after taking the lemon juice for a number of months, he decided to see what would happen if he stopped taking it. He now rarely even has heartburn! Still, we keep lemon juice in our house at all times, so if he has heartburn he can clear it up right away. Again, I have no idea if this will help with heartburn that is a direct result of taking a supplement--probably not, but I thought it might be a helpful tip, anyway.
Luckofthedraw--thanks for the tips on making green tea taste better. I'm one of the people who hates the taste of the stuff!

Hi ladies! anyone here slightly anemic? if so any suggestions? I don't eat red meat, juice all the time, lots of green veggies, so I am a little stumped!
Thanks!

Lorraine,
It can happen because the iron in vegetables we eat are poorly absorbed. If your iron poor then the first foods to eat is shell fish, steamed mussels, cod, snapper, tuna, sardines and probably herring too. Cooking in an iron skillet helps. Lesser absorbed and good to eat is iron enriched cereals, beans, tomato, spinach. Taking vitamin C helps with iron absorption. Having a taste of white wine with the fish also helps with absorption, red wine does the opposite and most people will have a glass of red with meat, so there goes the iron absorption. Then no drinking any type of tea with a meal.
Have you had your B-12 level checked?
As I recall, hummus is high in iron, chick peas or is it the tahini? One or the other, but it's a tasty way to get iron in.

I had read this information before...thought I would share

Former FDA commissioner David Kessler warns that sugar, fat and salt can hijack our brains and cause us to overeat. In his new book, The End of Overeating, he describes the way the food industry works with the advertising industry to create the food cravings that are so hard to resist.

Lorraine-it is funny you should ask about iron. I was just reading a book yesterday that mentioned that it is very hard to get enough iron and b vitamins. This book recommends that 3 oz(about the size of a pack of cards) of meat daily is actually better than eating a totally veggie diet. Anyway, the book is called "The Doctors Book of Food Remedies". I got it for under $10 at the clearance bookstore. It lists all kinds of foods, with their nutrient value as well as common ailments and foods that are recommended.
Great info Rosemary. Thanks!
Luck of the draw-perhaps the reason you do not like green tea is because you perk it. According to the owner of my local tea shop, green tea should not be steeped on boiling water or it will be bitter. The water should be very hot and the tea should be steeped for only one to 2 minutes. My tea shop has lots of wonderful flavors of green tea(loose leaf). The white teas are actually higher in antioxidants than the greens. You can order online:
sereneteaz.com
As for the tumeric-I hate the taste and I am not as industrious as Audrey is about making my own. I use curcumin from the vitamin shoppe. I do not have the bottle anymore, so I cannot give you the stats, but I know that curcumin is the active ingredient in tumeric. Like all my supplements I keep changing brands.Variety is the spice of life!
Stop eating those acai berries! Not because they are not good for us, but because our consumption is depleting the rainforest. Eat more Michigan blueberries instead. The Michigan economy needs our business! Read this:

soapsnug--thank you! so good to hear. I will hope for the best...
I was wondering too if I am getting anemic--am getting tested next week so we will see. Maybe this weekend I'll slip in some red meat--good to know what to have it with. I really only like eating grass-fed beef though because of the omega 3 to omega six ratio, lack of added hormones. etc.

That reminds me, goji berries grown high in the Tibetan mountains, and a good source of iron. And I also forgot to add dried fruit to the list. That's why they call goji berries a pick-me-up fruit because of the iron content.

Thanks for the info ladies I knew I could count on you! I get the blood test results from the naturopath today, so we shall see what the B-12 levels are, I will keep you posted, thanks again!

Mandy, I have to get to whole foods. The boxed (shelved) milk substitues are just not doing it for me! I had toast today vs. cearal!
Ivory Mom, haven't tried Goat's milk yet. I wonder, does anybody know, would Goat's Milk be preferable health-wise to Cow's milk? I saw on some thing on TV about these folks with less cancer and living longer, (some island off Greece) and they had fresh goat's milk!

Grace,
Since your taking E, make sure its the mixed kind. A little bit of all of them. Taking one kind of E isn't good.

Hi Rosemary,
It says "Mixed Form" L-Tocopherol and L-Tocotrienols.
Thanks Rosemanry...

Spring, Jane Plant says no dairy of whatever kind. I have also read somwhere that goats' milk is better for humans than cows' but Dr Plant's argument is that all milk have growth hormones. She says 'cows milk is only good for calves'.

Grace you have covered everything with your supplements.
I wanted to share with you what I took following my excisional biopsy which showed cancer growing on the edges of the area removed,
I took 400mg of CoQ10 (daily) the one with KYOLIC...I had 3 weeks to take it before my second surgery to get clear margins....and would have a sentinel node biopsy at the second surgery as well.
when the surgeon gave me the report a week after the second surgery,,,,he said everything was all clear....I asked him how much cancer was in the re-excision, he told me there was 0.5mm clear margins....and gave me the path report....later I read the path report in amazement....there was only a low-grade cribiform 2.5mm area of cancer in the resected tissue....which amazed me because in the first path report he had told me that the cancer went to the edges of the tissue....so I wondered about that CoQ10....
One thing you should know is that the garlic you are taking puts you at a higher risk of post surgical bleeding....
I wasn't taking to much garlic before the first surgery, but the kyolic/CoQ10 I started taking those 3 weeks prior to the second surgery was loaded with garlic, needless to say I had a large amount of bleeding the night I went home, even had to call the on call surgeon....had to go the surgeons office the next morning....
no one ever checked my hemoglobin before or after surgery.....even through radiation....but when I went to the oncologist after radiation, he told me I was anemic....I wondered if the anemia started from that surgery, I remember being short of breath during rads....which is a sign of anemia and also my hair falling out. ( rads can affect your blood counts too.)
Spring and others thanks for the goats milk info.....does it taste the same? I was wondering about it too.

Grace ~ One thought on the Vitamin E. I had read somewhere that selenium is also very good for us, and I already knew that it has a synergistic effect when combined with Vitamin E. So I recently switched to a Bio-E with Selenium.
In addition to some of what you're taking -- and we're each so individual, so I'm not recommending this to anyone else -- I also take Tumeric (New Chapter's tumericforce), I3C (Solaray brand), and Green Tea Concentrated Extract (Paradise Herbs). I take all of those because I am not doing an A/I or Tamox. I am also thinking of adding Grape Seed Extract and/or Resveratol, but I am waiting until my PCP gets a more indepth analysis of my estrogen levels, as I want to be able to track the benefit if I add one or both.
