I should have said WE smoke our own salmon. I do not eat processed meat..

My Oncologist is actually the one telling me that smoked food is bd for Her2 gals like me. The smoking processes is what is bad. Also, If I grill any food.. it must not be well done anymore.. burned if you will. this is a carcinogen too...

I was told that is the key to grilling... do not burn or cook well done.

HERE THE BEST...THEY GOT A LAWSUIT FOR SAYING THIS!! and retracted the research. Such a important part of research...who did the study and who are they connected too?

I read on grilling (which we don't do nearly as much of now, as have cut out a lot of the sausage--the good ones--and the red meat that we used to grill) that if you marninate it or nuke it in the microwave briefly beforehand it kills off much of the bad stuff that happens on the grill. I can dig up the more technical explanation--the Anti-Cancer book also talks about it.

I need some advice on how to improve my sport life. I am more of an outdoor person, biking, roller-skating, swimming (indoor, too) but not be able to do these on a regular basis.  I was thinking of starting either yoga, Pilates or both. Anybody doing these? How many times a week? What other exercises/sports are you doing?

FloridaLady--thanks. The first link came up with nothing from the search criteria" but the second article was really interesting. Crazy! I can't believe they allowed a national campaign on such limited results.

Simvog, I am also trying to get into a better routine of exercise. I usually walk a 2.4 mile loop about 4 times a week as well as walking about a mile to and from the dog park with my dog twice a day. I just started back to yoga last week and I plan to take it at least once a week--goal would be twice. I think it is fantastic for both strengthening, stretching and meditation. I also have a routine that a trainer designed for me after radiation that includes arm exercises (with and without weights), ab work, and lunges. The goal with this is 3 times a week. I would like to add the elliptical machine back in as I really like that for quick cardio but I think I am going to cancel my gym membership as I no longer work downtown so the gym is not convenient anymore.

    AllieM22,

Thank you. You are doing so much! I wish I could do half of what you're doing. I am still struggling with Taxol's tiredness( two more tx to go). Can't wait for the summer to come.

I read that gas grilling is a lot safer than charcoal, which seems logical. Also, marinades and rubs are protective so do that. Also, it is important to not burn the food, the charcoal is the bad part remember. I think that a good quality steak (grass fed, hormone free) once in a while is certainly not going to hurt us.

Sim and Allie, go over to the motivation thread for some thoughts on exercise. I do rebounding almost daily, which is fun and easy and great for they lymphatic system. I also do free weights almost every day. Building muscle is great for the metabolism and is what finally helped me to start taking off inches. I have always biked and walked a lot, but the weights really added to my fitness level.  I do yoga dvd's to destress, and sometimes pilates dvd's. Instead of watching a TV show, I will exercise through it. No guilt about watching American Idol or Survivor that way!

Rebounding is a small trampoline with something to hold on to and you jump on it.  Don't wear anything tight because you want all your juices to move around.  They sell them on ebay, and I did see it at a sports store too.  A holding bar is recommended.

Rosemary-Are you rebounding too? It's a great way to relieve all that political tension too! LOL  I sure miss venting with you! As for the bar- I found that after   a little practice, I did not need to hold on to anything. It is actually better not to because it works more muscles to balance on your own. If you find one that does not have a bar and you think you need one, just set up the ironing board to hold on to. That's what I did at first. Also, you can bounce without your feet leaving the mini tramp until you get use to it. I could really feel it in my legs at first, but now it is easy. I can run in place, do jumping jacks, knee lifts, twists, etc. I bet you can even Zumba on it! I love my rebounder! I do it almost every night for at least 20 minutes, with what is left of the girls, bouncing away!

About the rebounding, I just heard it helps with lymphedema. Can I purchase any mini-trampoline or are they special ones? The ones on rebounding websties are quite pricey. Any instructions on how to jump properly to help the lymphatic system?

    Vivre,

I use to rebound, and its quite a workout.  But I gave it away because of a problem that I had before buying the rebounder.  What was I thinking?  Anyway, I thought it was great.

The bar is removeable, so once your an accomplished rebounder, off it goes.

About the venting, I barely take my head out of sand nowadays.  The last political thing I read is that some in congress would like to end the funding for CAM research.  But the NIH has money to send researchers to Argentina to cruise certain types of bars.  $400,000 for that project.

That's my political commentary for the rest of this year.  Don't let them close down CAM research.

Cebula. I got mine at a local sporting goods store for around $50. You can usually try it out too. Mine is by Nordic Track. Make sure they are well made. You do not want one of those made for kids. Mine came folded in half. I just had to screw on the legs, pop it open and it was ready to go. It is GREAT for the lymphatic system, and many alternative therapies encourage doing it daily. Plus, it is easy on the knees, especially if you keep your feet on the surface and bounce instead of jump. Work you way up to jumping as your balance gets better. As for the exercises, I just do what ever you can do on the floor. Dance, jump, lift your arms up, twist, etc. etc. I really find it to be fun. Plus, I annoy my DH because I make noise!

    Found these youtube videos!

    Cebula,

Check for them on ebay.  Mine cost $100 with a bar.  I think its sports academy that carries them also.  I didn't notice the price there.

Nevermind, Vivre found a better price.  One more thing, they come in different sizes.  I went for the wider one.

    Vivre and Rosemary,

I heard that jumping the mini-tramp is good for cleaning out toxins. It apparently massages all the lymphatic system? Good for detoxing? I heard 20 min a day. I have not incorporated this though. Maybe I should? We have one of those little tramps here.... do you work up a sweat? I would think so ....

Non-dairy update: 2nd day on "Pacific Organic Low Fat" Oat Milk and I don't mind it at all. It is creamy vs. watery, not sure if that's why, also has a pleasant taste.

    Spring,

It doesn't take much effort on one of them to get tired.  I was surprised at how fast I could feel like I got a good workout.  I applaud anyone who can get past 5 mins.  Yes, everything you heard about it is true.  It's a good lymphatic mover.

Here's the one I liked, I held on to the bar and did high kicks.  You feel you muscles getting a good workout.  Then you can do crazy leg movements like when we played hopscotch as kids and had to do that crazy turnaround.  It's all possible again.  Have fun.

FYI, lots of rebounders on Craigslist, seems like people buy them then don't use them, I found so many in like new condition that you can get for a fraction of the price :)

Spring thanks for the "milk" update. I need to avoid carageenan and it's in the almond milk. Sigh.

I have a rebounder that I don't use.  I'm very stubborn about not wearing proper shoes. The instructions say to wear sturdy shoes while rebounding.  I didn't, and somehow I injure a toe on my left foot and get ligament damage.  sigh

A little bit of rebounding goes a long way when you first start.  My feet were always in contact with the rebounder and I just did a minute or two.  This might be tmi, but I got really stinky armpits for the first couple of weeks.  Someone else had made a similar report when I first started and it was definitely true for me also.

    Hey, cebula, hello!

For lymph system stimulation the gals bounce very lightly without letting their feet leave the mat. In other words it's gentle and rhythmic, not jarring. It helps to move your arms around while bouncing. You can raise them over your head and slowly open and close your fists, then lower, or stretch them in front of you and to the sides. Since you don't want to fall and land on your arm (Surprised), the handy-dandy safety bar is a nice addition. The gals who do this find that even 5 or 10 minutes a couple of times a day helps a lot. I don't do it at all, because I have some arthritis in my ankle and rebounding makes it worse, but I can bounce lightly on one of those big exercise balls and get the same effect.

    Be well!

Cebula-I am not into the shoes, but boy is it great to be wearing size 6 jeans after having to sqeeze into those size 12's. I saw a friend yesterday I had not seen in 3 years, and he told me I looked like I was 20 years younger. Keep bouncing! I bounced my way through AI last night. It is fun to do it to music. I can do 20 minutes without any effort now. In fact, I have a hard time working up a sweat, even though I am working hard. I know it is because I am so much fitter now. Of course, now that the temp is finally warming up here, it will be easier to sweat. I will probably be hating the heat by Sunday!LOL

By the way, I now do the rebounder barefoot. It is a harder workout, but wear shoes until you get stronger.

Hello Natural Girls - I've been away & just catching up about rebounding - I have a book called the complete Natural Medicine guide to Breast Cancer, which actually was on loan at my Breast Cancer centre, which has a 2-page article on rebounding. among other things, it says 10 min rebounding (hah!) is equivalent to 30 minutes jogging. I can't get past 5.......

Off topic for the moment, can anyone here tell me what they know about a new product ( might be old in the US) - grapeseed oil, inexpensive & on the grocery shelf.. Would it be similar to, say, sunflower or other seed oils in that is highly polyunsaturated? therefore I would stay away from it.....or, closer to monosaturated like olive oil? thanks for any info

    happy rebounding,

Binney, so I don't bounce like a wild woman then, just lightly bouncey up and down, it sounds like? I think I could do that. I am going to try it! I will report back!

I was at a work conference today and did good with the lunch food presented, veggie wrap (vs. processed meat), water (vs. soda), apple, and I did take one bite of the cookie before throwing it out. It was not worth the sugar! I did give it a try! ha!

I jumped on my couch today does that count? It felt good  to be silly and I ended up laughing so hard I had to stop. I have a small trampoline in storage. I think I will go get it.

Wow.  I need to check in here more often.  Things move fast and then I have to spend hours catching up!  I had so many responses and comments as I read, but now can hardly remember any of them!

About the milk... I actually think it unnatural to drink the milk of another animal.  All other animals (except us) never drink milk after being weaned from their own mother's milk.  It's only logical that we should be the same.  That said, it's a hard habit to break, since I love cereal, ice cream and especially, cheese.  I now try to buy only raw cheese, and have cut way back.

    Good health to you all!
