Happy New Year everyone and congratulations Althea on your 7 year anniversary! I was diagnosed Jan 15th, 2009 (5 days after my 50th birthday) so I'll be celebrating an anniversary soon as well. Who would have thought I would be so excited to celebrate an anniversary like that but every year under my belt is a wonderful feeling. All the best to you and all the ladies on this site!
Vivre...Looking forward to yourmonthly program!

Natural girls-
Missing all of you lost natural girls. I used to come this thread for great information, support, and friendship. Where have all of you gone? Really hoping some of you all return to the boards, as I miss your informative posts. This thread was a highlight for me, felt like we were like-minded and liked to share good research.
If you ever read this, PM me and let me know that you are still out there!!!

MariannaHB: I'm still here...we were away for a week on a cruise and now back to reality. Still doing my anti cancer diet and supplement program, and hoping for a positive outcome. I have some heart issues that came up during my pre op screening as well as elevated liver enzymes that must be addressed, so I'm going through that process now, and hoping for the best.
I start my vitamin therapy infusions in a couple of weeks and will update on how that progresses.

Marianna, I am here, too. I have been very busy. I am about to have my estogen tested in the next couple weeks so it will be interesting to see how my DIM, grape seed extract, myomin, calcium d-glucarate et al are doing. Also doing a regular blood panel and will see how red yeast rice did with my borderline cholesterol issue. Also will see how my Vitamin D is going. I have been trying for at least an hour a week in sunshine in shorts and a T shirt along w/1000 iu D.

BarbaraA: I have borderline cholesterol as well. What's red yeast rice? If it works for you then I'd like to try it as well. I'd sure like to see the look of surprise on my GP's face when I tell him how I lowered my cholesterol without his drugs!

Terri, it is a natural statin. Lipitor is a statin drug so many people use red yeast rice (with coQ10 which helps make it more effective). I am feeling pretty good about it working. But I will know for sure after my blood work,

Marianna I'm here as well. Reading a book "The China Study" by T Colin Campbell. Very good book on nurtition.
Kaara-hate to hear of the heart issues hope you can get it resolved. Keep us posted on the infusion.
Barbara I'll be interested in the red yeast rice as well. Heart problems run in my family and so far I have been OK but I do get my cholesteral checked every year. so if it creeps up it will be good to know if this is working for you
Sherry--lump left breast 9/30/10. No chemo, oncotype score 23 with 14% recurrence rate. 34 rads. No family history, BRCA neg

Sherryc: I'm reading The China Study as well....very interesting. I know that my friend put her Mysthenia Gravis completely in remission by going vegan, no meat or dairy, so there is definitely a positive result from eating a plant based diet. I've tried to do it, but something is missing because I always end up getting shaky and weak without enough animal protein.

Happy Birthday Terri! You look beautiful!
Sherryc What distiller did you get? I have been interested in distilling my own water. We now have it delivered in 5 gallons dispenser bottles, but it is expensive, heavy and the bottles are PLASTIC!

Here is the water distillers info.

I checked out several on the internet and they all look the same so are probably all made by the same manufacturer. I chose the stainless but the enamal one is cheaper. I also chose the one with the glass carafe. The enamal ones are stainless on the inside. I did find some cheaper ones on the internet but they came with the plastic carafes and by the time you bought the glass carafe you would spend more. Hope this information helps. I really love mine. I keep plenty of water made up. Just trying to get DH used to using the water for our morning oatmeal.

Terri-we almost have the same canserversary. I finished my treatments on MLK birthday, which is Monday.Four years! I remember finishing my victory walk after my last treatment and proclaiming "Free at Last, Free at Last! ( oops forgot you are Canadian, MLK is Martin Luther King lol)
Here is some good info about distilled water I found:

I also ran across this blog. We often see people quote quackbusters around here, trying to discredit some of our info. I have long suspected quackbusters was a quack site. This seems to connect the dots:

As for China Study-I do not see that it is all kosher. Campbell has some pretty shady research when he goes on his rampage against eating proteins. While this may be a diet that is condusive for some, it is not healthy for others. Some people will thrive as a vegan, some will not. I have been workng with a wonderful nutritionist who has spent years working from the eating for your metabolism mindset. He insists that the healthiest people are those who eat in harmony with their own biological chemistry based on our ancestry. It makes a lot of sense to me. I have adopted a mediterrean diet and that is what makes me feel the best. I think going vegan is great to get the body cleansed and healthy, but I need protein from non gluten sources. We are all different. The goal is to find what is best for our own metabolism. My friend is writing a book with my wonderful dentist. I hope they get it out soon. He has been very successful helping people with cancer by counseling them through the Kelly Gonzalez program that SS talks about in Knock Out. It involves specific enzymes, metabolic typing and colonics.

Wow, Vivre, that blog was very interesting! Thanks.

vive thanks for the links. The China Study is an interesting book however I am like you in that I need protein. Since having BC and changing my eating habits. I have cut way down in the amount of animal protein that I eat as I was eating way too much beforehand. I still need my beef fix every now and then and when I do I try to get grass fed organic. I have a local source of organic chickens and organic eggs so I stick with those. But I now eat alot more veges and find myself craving them now that I have gotten sugar out of my diet. I think as with most things we have to read and then decide what is best for us to do for our own bodies. No one knows our body better than ourself if we will just listen to it.

Hi Marianna, I'm still around, but not as much lately. I've been a slacker on juicing lately and I think it's a big part of my energy slump.
I read the china study years ago. Definitely not one of my faves, but it's a landmark study and definitely worth knowing about. I recently watched Forks over Knives. Dr Campbell was interviewed extensively through the documentary, and I was disheartened to learn that he was marginalized by Cornell after publishing his study. Dr Esselstyn is the other doc interviewed and I give the film a big thumbs up.
Regarding cholesterol and heart disease, I hope y'all know that 50% of all heart attack patients have normal cholesterol levels. Yes, excessively high cholesterol levels can be a precursor to heart disease, blah blah blah. There's just not as strong a connection as those ads have you believe. Be sure to have your CRP (c reactive protein) and homocysteine levels monitored. These are better indicators of impending heart disease than cholesterol. Learned that one from Dr Ray Strand's book.... blanking on the name of it right now. I started a thread on it a long time ago with the notes from his book before I took it back to the library, in case anyone wants to look it up. Free radicals and antioxidants were in the title.

Althea-Strands book was probably "Death By Presciption". Another book is "The Chloresterol Conspiracy". There are many more docs who now consider the homosysteine levels more important than chlolesterol. And it is common for cancer patients to have low chlor. Mine was always low and my docs were applauding it. Since I started eating healthy fats, taking vit d (which raises it), and omegas, mine has gone up 50 pts. That is just fine with me.

Thanks so much for the info on distillers!

Barbara - Many thanks, will look into it for myself and hubby
Suzanne - thank you for the birthday wishes! So far, 53 is great! Would not have been happy about turning 53 before BC, but now I cherish every birthday!
Vivre - A wealth of knowledge as usual. Thanks so much for your posts. I look forward to them and the very informative links you always provide!

I read on another thread that aged garlic is also very effective for cholesterol. I may try switching to that as statins can hurt your liver function.

I just heard someone say (on TV) that our bodies make cholesterol to bind the toxins in our systems. It is actually a lifeline, our body's way of protecting us. So again, when treating the symptoms of high cholesterol, we are not addressing the "cause" which are the toxins. What's more, if we are taking statins, etc to lower the cholesterol, we are basically taking away that lifeline. Made sense to me.

Re : "I just heard someone say (on TV) ... Made sense to me."
Wow.

impositive, that does not change the fact that lowering cholesterol levels reduces the risk of heart attack. BTW I am not taking statins. My cholesterol level was high(220) but my "good cholesterol" has always been between 70 and 80 and so I have an excellent cholesterol ratio, which I am sure is a result of heredity and diet.

I'm fairly sure that they use to claim on the Lipitor commerical that: Lipitor ALONE does NOT reduce your chance of heart attack. I guess that was too honest and understandable...Now the wording is:
LIPITOR, along with diet, is clinically proven to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, certain kinds of heart surgeries, and chest pain in patients with heart disease or several common risk factors for heart disease.
The along with diet phrase is an important componet of Lipitors effectiveness and most probably overlooked. People would much rather keep to their crappy food consumption and pop a pill than change their food habits.

I've changed a lot since being dignosed with BC. I never could have imagined before BC that I'd be the person which I am today. I believe it takes something devastating for one to make such drastic changes in their lives. I'm glad for the changes. One of the changes I've made is NOT to eat animals. I don't even want to refer to this as meat any longer because it disassociates people from what it is. I stopped eating animals to improve my health and I'm glad I did. I can eat with a clear conscious knowing that I did NOT contribute to an animals suffering. I'm not vegan, but I ethically I belive we all should be. One step at a time...
There are many surces of protein other than animal protein. Gluten is derived from wheat. Here is the link to info. about gluten on wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gluten-free_diet

making way I think that qualifies as cya. If they did not say that somebody would sue. Statins are far from perfect drugs but it would be nice to have what was seen on tv backed up by studies. I couldn't find any to prove that the cause of high cholesterol is toxins, unless if by toxins bad diet was meant.
I think we all can agree that a good diet is beneficial.

I suffer from urticaria (hives) and despite antihistamines (which I grow tolerant to, on my 4th one now) I still suffer with huge 4-5 inch giant mosquito-bite-like hives. I started keeping a diary of when they happen and they happen: when I eat pasta, when I drink beer, when I eat more than one slice of bread. So I am going gluten-free starting today. I'll keep you posted.

BarbaraA: I promise you, you won't be sorry! It's the best decision I ever made and I wasn't really having any problems that I knew of. I feel so much better!

Good for you, BarbaraA! I think you are going to feel so much better....I can't wait to hear your results. Follow your health!

Hi guys, I stay quiet on this thread because I feel like you guys are so much more advanced than I am in the natural realm. However, there are not too many chemicals remaining in my life, and my family of five. I am vegan now, kids are vegetarian. But, this is not about us and is terribly off-topic for a bc forum.
HOWEVER, I am appealing to anyone who has ever watched someone suffer...
I just left the home of a dear friend having made the family dinner. Her 5 year old was diagnosed with hsp...an inflammatory immune system response to probably a virus. He is covered in whelts, and has been crying for almost a month. His urine is cloudy, but no protein is involved. His joints are swollen, his testicles and his knees to his ankles look like a tree trunk. He has been in the hospital 7 times in the past few weeks and sent home told he will be fine in a week or so.
I have been googling like mad. What I am0 -
geewhiz: That sounds terrible. My heart just breaks when I hear that a child is so ill. He needs to see a pediatric auto immune specialist. As a parent I would be demanding that he get immediate attention. This is not something that can be diagnosed over the internet. It sounds life threatening.
