    I remember my first trip to Hawaii.  I was 12.  I couldn't believe how warm the water was and the air smelled so rich and flowery.  That was before Waikiki became a huge shopping jungle.  The "sidewalks" were made of boards and every store along the main road sold muu-muus and aloha shirts.  I didn't want to go home.  It is still my favorite vacation of my youth.

    footprintsangel - my dad took my old metal roller skate and made me a skateboard out of a piece of plywood! I thought it was so cool....

    ~~~~~~~~~~
    We had no money for vacations, so the only thing we did was go camping (old army tent, army cots, army blankets)...my favorite place was Yosemite. Families who camped near each other often shared dinners....it was true "Pot luck!"
    After dark, the campgrounds were magic places...lit only by lanterns, and at night we'd go see the Firefall - a group of men would push a huge pile of burning bark off the top of a cliff, and the embers would glow all the way down the granite rocks - I think it was a 3,000 foot drop.
    No RVs, no boom boxes, no satellite dishes......just the quiet of the forest at night, the sound of the rushing Merced river (where we'd swim in the icy water during the day), and the smell of coffee and bacon cooking over the campfire in the morning!
    Ahhhh.....
    That sounds alot like my family and going to the beach or places
    that you didnt have to pay for. We ate spaghetti and macaroni with
    hot dogs and alot of peanut butter sandwichs. But didnt think we were
    poor. We had each other.
    the best camping is the quiet kind.  I used to take my kids camping all the time (I was a single mom).  Hopefully those are fond memories for them.  I remember when I was a kids we used to go camping.  In the morning dew was all over everything - including my shoes that I had carefully left outside the tent so they wouldn't dirty things up.  I quickly learned that they needed to be inside the tent, because I didn't like wet cold shoes in the morning!!!
    year. My cookies sold for 50cents, we sat around the fire
    and sang at night.
    I remember going salmon fishing with my Dad.  I caught a really big salmon (over 30 lbs) and couldn't get it in the boat myself.  He took over the fish and I was supposed to watch the boat.  I got so engrossed in the fish that I wasn't paying enough attention to the boat and we almost got caught in the surf.  My Dad got the fish in the boat, and I got the boat into deeper water, but he was fairly PO'd at me for not paying attention.  I was scared at the time, but in hindsight it sure is a great memory.
    Winter:  Sledding and playing in the snow.  It seemed to snow so much more when I was younger, but it could be a selective childhood memory. Grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup. To this day, I cannot eat that combination unless it's a snowy, wintry day.
    Summmer:  Too poor for vacations, but spent a lot of time with my cousin Peggy (we're one year and one day apart), walking to my Grandma's, the severe thunderstorms, and eating fruit off the many fruit trees in our back yard.
    Fall: The smell of leaves burning, the smell of jumping in the pile of leaves before burning, getting the Sears wi9shbook in the mail.
    Spring: A lot of rain, but everything smelled so clean.
    Each season had so many memories that even today, the weather can bring back a very vivid childhood memory that I swear is my favorite.
    My parents and about 10 couples who were close friends.  They each had a least 4 children per couple.  We had days out at a local park where all 40 or so kids would play together, we would play tennis or do tractor rides.  40 years later we still see each other ocassionally and we are all just like family
