Those exercises look good, Falconer. I think I will make a copy for myself. Many, many years ago I read that a person needs four hours of aerobic exercise and 4 hours of toning a week; so that is what I aim for. I have various toning DVDs and 'count' some of my classes too. For instance, my 45 minute POUND class has 2 abs, 1 buns song and all the other song include many squats, arm work etc. so I count that as half an hour of toning. I give myself 45 minutes for an hour yoga class (I can't quite justify the 15 minutes of lying on the ground part as toningWinking). I've noticed that of my friends in our 60s and 70s, even of the ones who exercise, the only ones of us who still have defined weights are those who do dedicated toning as part of our exercise routines.

We met up with some friends and went to a semi-pro baseball game today. The weather was perfect, the game not so much. I had time for a walk when we got home and will now log off and practice what I preach by doing a Denise Austin toning DVD.

Today was a work day, so reliving the past weekend as I share pictures. Note that this is Eastern Washington which is high desert and a very different climate from west of the Cascades. Pictures of of Naches Heights and the Yakima Canyon. Still feeling the hike, but consoling myself with mussels in a fresh tomato, saffron, cream sauce. - Claire

View from the vineyard towards Cowiche Canyon and Mount Adams.

Another view more towards the north.

Grapes ripening. The exciting part was that I got to taste so many different grape varietals.

View towards the northeast and the Untanum Range.

30 years of Wilridge wines. We tasted everything!!!! Heart

    image

Home sweet home in the apple orchard. They have a fancy still from Portugal for apple and pear brandy. That is for a future tasting, though I just loved the grape brandy I tasted.

    image

Yakima Canyon and where we launched the floats. I didn't feel comfortable taking my smartphone - a good move.

Morning sunrise. I went back to bed.

Winemaker pottery. These are wine vessels, fashioned after the ancient Greek ones.

    image

Cowiche Canyon. I didn't hike all the way down as had to get back. But I have skied the bottom and also done a run there.

Winemaker with his new totem pole. Won't mention the rude comments here, and wondering if the birds will like it.

Falconer, the NYT HIIT page you linked looks good. Hope you have a good start to the school year and inspired by the list of all you have done physically over the summer, despite starting off with surgery in June - good stuff! Claire, nice photos and totem is way cool. Went into London on Sunday for the new BodyBalance/BodyFlow release #82 workshop. The trainer was a the UK LM legend Ann See and true joy for me as I've always have wanted to meet her. The Monkees song, Daydream Believer is what is used for the balance track A and we all sang along to it whilst lifting to the dancers pose. Will the millennials know who the Monkees were..we shall see! Pat, enjoy London & Wales and this changeable, autumn weather!

Falconer, here is an article by Jane Brody in the NY Times. The first of two, the second still to come.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/03/well/live/preventing-muscle-loss-among-the-elderly.html

In our low-estrogen state, strength training should be a priority. I know, easier said than done. I had myself tested 9 months ago with an exercise physiologist and my muscles seem to be intact. I've come a long way from being sarcopenic due to mets. Cancer can block muscle repair after exercise, but even in this case the solution is supposed to be to increase the stimulus. I hired a personal trainer 2-3 times a week to provide the stimulus (with my doctor's OK) and also for lymphedema prevention. I did free weights, TRX (suspension training), resistance bands and bodyweight exercises with the trainer. Ten year laters I still regularly do strength training with the TRX, free weights, kettlebells, sandbags or machines.

My races were canceled Saturday Sunday and Monday morning due to inclement weather. I don't mind running in the rain but unfortunately there was a lot of thunder and lightning over the holiday weekend. I used my treadmill inside the house and the elliptical machine. It's so boring exercising inside the house. I do enjoy using my balance ball and my resistance bands. So I ended up getting my workout in. I continue to clean out my closets. Will it ever end? I have approximately 10 boxes for Goodwill. Once the closets are finished then I can focus on having my main bathroom gutted and renovated. My main bath is very small 5 by 8. I want to put in a frameless shower and rip out the bathtub. By 83 year old mother is very active but it is increasingly more difficult for her to lift her leg over my high bathtub. So I want to make the bathroom up-to-date and safe for my mother. My mother visits every 6 to 8 weeks and usually spends at least a week with me so it's important for her to feel safe when she showers. Of course she told me don't worry about it she will be fine. My other bathroom has a very high clawfoot tub so that won't work either for her. I'm waiting for my appointment now to see my radiation oncologist for my discharge. I completed radiation almost 4 weeks ago. I didn't experience any side effects with radiation.

All of you have a wonderful day. Those of you who are teachers, a special good luck to you.

Yesterday, Rachel posted this on her instagram and twitter: https://www.instagram.com/p/BnRBxhjh6Mg/?taken-by=bigclittleme Today, the below was posted at the tube and gone viral.

Aww- Lilac, I hear you loud and clear.

I think this crazy heat wave may have halted the thread. I know it’s all I can do to make it through the school day. By the time school gets out, I look like I just did a Zumba class. It really saps my energy.

Short walk this morning before work. At this school I don't walk at lunch as I eat with the staff - very small school so it makes sense - pouring after work so no walk....hoping to walk shortly with DH. Be lucky to get 10K today. Been averaging 14-16K on work days so this is really skimpy.

Yesterday was our 41st wedding anniversary. DH and I got the same card for each other! As soon as I saw the gray envelope I knew it was the same card. I guess it says how much we think alike. I think this also happened once before a few years ago. We spent time enjoying each others company this week-end and watched movies at night...Watched a movie again last night.

Finally posted pictures on fb from this summer. I did it from my phone and I think I posted a few pictures 2 or 3 times - but oh well!!

DD#2 is at her grandma's in Columbus (my MIL). She took selfies of them. My MIL looks fantastic..she is 90 turning 91 in December. You'd never guess she is that old from pictures. We are so fortunate that she is doing well. MIL still lives in her own house, a tri-level. She doesn't cook much, but who does for just one person.

Ruth - love seeing your WWW photos. Lilac, I'm sorry for your loss. Hugs to you my friend.

Sorry I don't mention everyone, but it is hard to keep scrolling back to see what was read, and I can't remember it without taking notes. The principal today says she wonders if she's lost her brain, but said it wasn't at home so it must still be there!! I thought it was pretty funny as she is only in her mid 40s!! Makes me feel better about my lack of memory!!

    Sweet dreams.

    Lilac, I am sorry!

karen, that's funny. My DH and I got each other the same camera package for our 24th this year. The kids thought it was so funny they posted it to their twitter accounts.

I was at a class at our Breast Cancer coalition on "surviving and thriving on aromatase inhibitors. They got a 5 year grant to run this class, so they are taking data and putting together a paper when the 5 years is over. The class is free, so any info is just costing my time to sit there. They gave us a exercise/masage ball, and then she said it might be helpful to have a fit bit to track activitiy, so they gave each of us one! It is a less exciting model, but still pretty cool. I also me a person who lives around the corner from me, and saw an old acquaintance who was just recently diagnosed. Too bad there are so many of us.

It was 95 degrees here and first day with the students. Went to the Y and walked on TM for 30 minutes before class. Gosh am I stinky!

Congratulations on accomplishments and condolences on losses. Stupid effing cancer.

Been slacking a bit with sore feet (from arthritis) and a week of rain blech. Doc says to soak feet in Epsom salt and get some good shoe inserts. If that doesn't help, she'll refer me to a podiatrist.

Must get back in the swing of things - Nashville in a month!

badger, do you know what kind of inserts to get? They can make a big difference. I was slacking b/c of the heat, but it is finally supposed to be less than 90 today!

did over 14000 steps today, yesterday it was just over 11000. I think it could be enough. So now I have to concentrate on some toning exercises, yoga or similar. That's the challenge. Somehow I can't find a way to fit it anywhere in.

2FUN, I found a pair of Dr. Scholl's called "Active Series" that I really like. Of course they've stopped making them. So I got a pair called "Athletic Series" but haven't opened the package yet. Will let you know what I think. Anyone else care to weigh in on over-the-counter shoe inserts?

The Dr. Scholl's brand must have been sold. The parent company on the first pair was Merck but on the second it's Bayer. Maybe I can e-mail Merck and see if they have any in a warehouse somewhere LOL.

It finally stopped raining here, and the sun came out. Gorgeous day. Got out and walked at lunchtime and again after work. Had to hose out the birdfeeder, the seeds at the bottom were so waterlogged they were starting to sprout.

Lilac: I am so sorry to hear about Rachael. (((Hugs)))

Claire: Your pictures are gorgeous! I've had a picnic in an apple orchard but never slept overnight in one. Wonder what kind of noises you heard.

Ruth: Nice picture and I'm SO jealous of all the sweatshirts. I'm ready for sweatshirt weather.

    Karen: Happy Anniversary!

Badger: Sorry about your arthritis. Hope the new inserts help to lessen the pain.

2FUN: Your class sounds exciting. And they gave you a fit bit!

I've been staining our new deck we had built in the spring and I'm not very good at it. The semi-transparent stain I bought shows all my mistakes. Oh well, it will look okay once it's completed plus it's been a good workout.

I am so sorry about Rachel Bland. Cancer doesn’t give a damn. My SIL was dx with ovarian cancer last year. She did weekly chemo for 4 months, and was NED when it was done. Five months later she recurred. Not good. She’s doing weekly chemo again. Then last week a dear friend’s son was dx with appendix cancer. They were planning on a big surgery to remove the appendix and other organs, but when they opened him up, the found that he was full of cancer. They didn’t even bother to do the surgery but simply closed him back up. He’s in his mid-fifties with a wife and kids. Pardon the language but I’m really angry now. Stupid fucking cancer.

I do agree with you that the cancer beast is especially beastly right now. Our neighbor's mom passed on Tuesday after ten years of, I hesitate because I don't know the right word- not a battle or a fight, but ten years of treatment for bc. She was only in her 60s.

So I will continue to exercise, take my hormone therapy, reduce stress, have regular doctor visits, and pray that I can keep on keeping on. I'll pray for all of you beautiful women too.

Hugs to everyone. I'm afraid that we all know too many people who are dealing with SFC. Seize the good days! Heart

I use the Dr. Scholl inserts from Walmart. The ones where you stand on the machine and it tells you what level to get. I buy new athletic shoes about every 6-9 months. I buy inserts whenever I get those new shoes and replace them every 3 months. They have REALLY helped me!

Another day of scanning for me. I then went to Aqua Zumba, changed quick, and went to a yoga class which started 15 minutes after the Zumba was finished. That is a little too hectic of a schedule so I don't know if I will do those classes back-to-back very often.

Falconer, beastly (kind of you to pray) is the right word and Mary, so sorry for SIL and tragic findings of dear friend's son. Rachel spent her last day on earth wrapping 18 birthday presents for her young son up to his 21st birthday. Will we ever find an cure for this awful disease. I read The Emperor Of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer by Siddhartha Mukherjee and he felt we would never really find the cure or that was my take after reading the book. 2FUN, like SFC and I too like a class focused on working to elevate the physical side effects of aromatase inhibitors. Love to hear more about it and how the program was put this together.

I've been lying low since Wednesday. Cancelled one Pilates class again today and bodybalance tomorrow having to ice my lower back due to inflammation in my right sacroiliac joint. Was up at 4am icing on the sofa in the tv room went back to bed and woke feeling a little better. Had an appointment with my chiropractor early yesterday morning and early this morning; slowly coming along to being better. Going to teach seated tai chi for severe Parkinson's at 2pm because I'm seated, the class is 35 minutes and they enjoy tea and biscuits afterwards and for some, it's their only weekly social. Anyway, enjoy reading all of you lovely ladies and how we deal with this SFC disease.

Interesting link below about Rachel Bland; the reportage of her death and lazy metaphors that are often used to cover up other words considered too harsh or too blunt about metastatic cancer: https://amp.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/sep/06/rachael-bland-battle-cancer-bbc-presenter
