I climb 28th flights of stairs today after my ophthalmologist appointment. He cleared me for night driving. Within 30 minutes upon completing the stair climb my right leg started shaking uncontrollably. I had to pull off the expressway and let my muscles relax. I was expecting the muscle reaction. I decided not to run tonight and to take it easy. It's time to listen to my body.

Sounds like you did the right thing, Jo!

Walked yesterday with DD who will soon be moving to Baltimore - boy will I miss her! Very glad she has gotten a job as she just finished up her MPH in December. She'll be working on a team which develops international maternal and infant health programs at a John Hopkins affiliate. Very proud of her - happy/sad she'll be moving away.

Today went to a muscle mix class - will be sore tomorrow, I'm sure.

mickey- congratulations on your DD's new job. Yeah it's sad she's moving away but at least it's for a good job opportunity. How far away will she be from where you live?

The weather was pretty good today. Cold, but sunny and no wind. I had a long, eat-too-much lunch with a friend this noon so went over and took the puppies for a brisk 25 minute walk (after which we all had a little snooze!).

I took a 5 mile, 1.75 hour walk/hike in hilly mixed redwoods/oaks/meadows park, 60 degree sunny day with beautiful greenery from recent rains. I am now in much better shape than before my diagnosis.

I walked/hiked and occasionally swam in the recent months before I found out I had cancer, but a few times a week at most and now it's almost every day. I am taking a leave from work and it makes all the difference, having that time. I even dragged my 16 yo son w/ me on a similar hike a few days earlier. I'm 3 1/2 weeks post Bilateral Mastectomy, so no swimming yet plus it's cold. I'm starting Chemo next week or the week after, so I'm anticipating a decline in my stamina but I feel like being as fit as I can before starting will help with tolerating it. I hope it helps, feeling nervous and scared about it. I've been liking listening to audiobooks while I exercise, today was listening to Valter Longo's Longevity book. I'm wondering about how much activity is doable while doing his fasting mimicking diet, which I'm thinking of trying.

I've been reading this forum, but haven't posted before, it's a wonderful resource.

caiti-keep up the good work. I was in excellent shape prior to having my BMX and chemo / radiation. I believe being physically fit helped me in dealing with the side effects from chemo. I pushed myself almost every single day to run or power walk. It can be done. Chemo is doable. And you're off to a great start

Thank you Jo, there is a big incentive (from reading about recurrence statistics and exercise) but also I feel much better. Im glad to know it has helped you through the experience and am hopefull hearing that you could keep it up during chemotreatment.

Karen, have you tried melatonin? Even 1 mg helps me. I take it once in a while in the summer. Six drops of Benadryl (or it's equivalent here) puts me out. That's about a quarter of the adult dose. But since I started on tamix I don't take it much (contraindicated).

Ruth, the walking women have turned into treadmill rats! Lol.

I start today with craniosacral therapy for my ailments in the butt and the neck. The term is right on the money.

I joined the university gym with DD. I saw Body Balance on their schedule plus lots of yoga.

Heidi - I take Ambien and it works for 4 hours!! I've had horrid insomnia since Dx and Tx but it improved for a few years, but its rearing its ugly head again. Ironic thing is DH and I almost wake up at the same time. This morning I woke up at 3 and finally at 3:15 took a Xana and was able to fall back to sleep till 6. I can't take antihistamines - last time I did (Zyrtec) I had heart palpitations. Melatonin made me too groggy in the morning.

Snowing here in Denver. Right now its pretty light, but I'm sure its enough to mess with the roads. Grocery store an TJs to get flowers, then cleaning and cooking for Shabbat. Its almost 9am and I haven't done anything productive yet, (except the computer0, so I best get busy.

    Stay warm.

2Fun-12F and beautiful? You are dedicated to your exercise program. If I was in 12 degree weather I probably would hibernate for the winter.

Welcome Caiti! Exercise definitely helps one get through treatment better (both mentally and physically), and having that base of fitness, for sure, helps you bounce back more quickly when you're done. As far as chemo goes, my advice is to plan to keep to as normal schedule as possible and then adjust as needed. Some people sail through, and some are really knocked out by it (in a way it's like pregnancy; you might have two people of equal fitness who are pregnant at the same time; one might be running a half marathon two weeks before giving birth, and the next might be on bed rest the whole time). Whatever happens, it's for a limited period of time, which is very helpful to remember. I kept a pretty normal schedule; but hired a cleaning lady, bought a bunch of frozen pizza etc. for the family, said 'no' to anything I didn't really want to do, and accepted all offers of help!

I had an odd kind of day. I went to a memorial service in the morning, then straight from the church to the school where I subbed the rest of the day, then home, where I had time to do 40 minutes on the treadmill before we were off to watch two high school basketball games. I would reflect on it all but I'm too tired right now!!

Karen, I just had a thought: make sure you are getting the time release Ambien (I took prescription sleep aides for a long time after diagnosis), otherwise it does wear off. Also, if Ambien doesn't work that great anymore: you could try a whole different aide, like Lunesta,

I'm going to Step It Up & Dance at 9:00 and then am off for a busy day.

    Happy Weekend!

Caiti, I actually full-on fasted during chemo after I studied up on Longo’s research. I had to work my way up because it was quite difficult the first time but got easier. I havent tried the fast mimicking diet. I believe that came about a little after I did chemo. Exercising and fasting and chemo seems impossible to me, at least. Chemo completely wiped me out. If I were to try it, I would start with exercise after the fasting period.

We used to build igloos in the pile of snow at the end of the drive after a big snow. It could hold my young son and the dog! I would love to build a real igloo.

I have been doing smaller amounts of exercise this week- concentrating on short walks and more weights and did a little youtube Pilates. I am working on losing my holiday weight gain. Lost 2.6 lbs in the last couple weeks. One more to go. It is easier for me to control my eating when my exercise is less aerobic. Plus it has turned back to winter temps and boy I was spoiled because I dont want to go out in it now.

I am also in the camp of wanting to exercise my way into my senior years. It makes me feel younger, and of course, BC is a great motivator. I have an image of a woman I saw in a restaurant with her twenty something grandkids- fit, wearing a down vest and hiking boots, silver hair in a ballet bun. She was talking about yoga and her walks. That is what I want to be.

I know exactly what you mean Jaboo! Don't have a Fitbit, but my smartphone tracker tells me that I did 5 and not 8 miles today.

Feel amazing. The last time I went was Christmas Day where conditions were "Cascade Cement" and I was coming down with a cold and fever. Talk about a confidence drain!!! I was wondering if I would ever ski the intermediate trails again. I needn't have worried.

I did have to relearn the best way to snowplow on these skis....new as of late last winter. By the third downhill, I totally had my groove back.

Tomorrow, it's back on my bicycle (it's warm in the Lowlands) as I just realized this morning that the Tunnel Ride is in 3 weeks. Something tells me that a spot of training might be in order.

Now, to sign up for the Seattle-to-Portland. Hoping I get a deal through my health system. Now THAT will make sure I get my sorry hide out there and exercised! This will make my 13th in a row. - Claire

I thought we were climbing 38 flights of stairs today but they limited us to 32 flights. No issues. I guess climbing 28 flights earlier in the week helped me. Tomorrow I'm running a 5k. I worked 8 hours today after my stair climbing. Tonight I'm cooking for a friend who's been ill. I'm really struggling because I'm cooking foods I'm not familiar; chicken souse, mac and cheese and collard greens with smoked turkey wings. I can rock the homemade mac and cheese . Even though I'm a vegetarian I can cook meat. My problem is I'm not familiar with the other dishes. I'm checking out Food Network and calling my friends. Hopefully everything will turn out okay. I'm going over tomorrow to visit with her and take her little dog Bella to visit with her. She isn't strong enough to take care of her dog yet.

We had some snow today so I decided to shovel the old fashioned way for my exercise rather than start up the snowblower. 40 minutes of shovel and sculpt and then cleaned house. Tomorrow I am going to start to Kon-Mari again. It is time to tackle clothes and paperwork again. I have bunches of clothes that do not spark joy anymore.

Jo - if DD gets job (which is almost certain) she will move to Baltimore and we live 30 miles west of Boston, so it will be a hike. She spent a year in Australia and we Skyped every week which worked pretty well but that was while she was in college and we knew she'd be coming back. This time I doubt she'll return to MA again - she's in global health so off she goes.

Ran 3.5 miles yesterday and started out at 17 degrees, however, there was no wind and there was bright sun, so it was not as cold as you think.

Today - football - Rivers and Brady and 1st woman ref, should be a good game.

A week of snow shoveling, igloo building followed by skiing during the weekend... Walking of course, every day. Winter is fantastic, so much exercise and so wonderfull. It's a pity my BMX is next week. DH will get all the shoveling for himself
